[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]SYSTEM AESTHETIC [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] Sword Art Online like many other MMOs has a level and skill mastery system associated with it, which has an artificial intelligence called CARDINAL doing constant self-corrections to its system through the means of patching. While the Sword Art Online mainframe is capable of incredible graphical and rendering capacities, it does not actually render the entire environment in full detail unless a certain region is specifically observed by a player. SAO uses a Digital Focusing System, which brings out the finer details of an object only when a player shows interest and focuses their visual field on it. It also renders physical sensations as well, including pain at a lowered threshold than reality and mundane sensations such as hunger, thirst, exhaustion and touch. Death or deletion in the game is represented by the object or person in question shattering into glowing shards. [attr="class","link-title"]ENVIRONMENT [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] Sword Art Online takes the form of a giant floating castle called Aincrad, with 100 floors in it. Each floor has a medieval-themed setting and a dungeon with a boss, which has to be defeated before players can advance to the next higher floor. At its base, it is approximately 10 kilometers in diameter, and it is completely rendered in all dimensions. Because of the nature of Aincrad as a floating castle, there are no invisible barriers or no-access regions at the edges of the map. Aincrad's perimeter is merely surrounded by guard rails that can be jumped off of (the system will render falling for approximately 2 minutes before suicide is registered as death). Each individual floor has its unique climate, geography, fauna, and environment. Some floors are known for being fairly cold, while others are known for flowers and forests. Most floors on Aincrad have a theme. In Sword Art Online, physical surroundings such as walls, buildings, monuments, and major features are considered "Immortal Objects". An error beep and a notification will sound if immortal physical objects are struck, even if by accident. Oftentimes, players must invest significant resources into buying equipment and consumable resources. Food always declines in durability with respect to time, and freshly prepared foods will disappear if not eaten soon enough. Merely dropping food can cause food to lose its durability and fragment into polygons.

[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]USER INTERFACE [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] When roleplaying, it's important to remember what your character can and cannot see with their user interface. Without using any skills or opening any menus, a player will always see their HP, or hit point, bar in the upper corner. This will also display your username, current and maximum hit points and level. If your character is in a party, it will also display the names and hit points of all other party members in smaller bars below it. When looking at others, a color cursor can be seen hovering over the heads of both players and NPCs. The colors are as follow: GREEN: Other players. ORANGE: Players with criminal infractions. YELLOW: NPCs RED: Monsters will have varying shades of red cursors above them. When engaging in combat with monsters or other players, a health bar can be seen around all fighting parties. This health bar will generally curve around the shoulders of players and display their username and guild tag as well as their HP. However, if a player or monster is 10 or more levels higher than your character, you will not be able to see their health. The health bar will turn purple and read 'unknown. Now that we understand what your character can see, let's go into how they can interact with the world. Players can interact with their surroundings by physically touching objects. They can move small items around as if they were in real life. This will either cause the item to preform the default function or bring up a floating menu for options with the item. Examples of this would be a jar opening and closing as you touch it, a door giving the options to open, close or lock, and a window opening and closing when you touch it. Furthermore, a player can use the Touch Interface to replace and simplify actions. An example of this would be tapping on a jar of cream to “use” said cream and then tapping on bread to automatically spread the cream on the bread rather than manually doing so. Finally, we get to the menu window. The menu window can be accessed by putting one's index finger and thumb together and pulling downwards. Immediately afterwards, a ringing sound is heard and the menu appears. Using the menu, players can access their equipment, inventory, friends, guild, communication options and their quests. INVENTORY: In this menu tab, a player can find their equipment and inventory. SOCIAL: In this tab, a player can find options for parties, friends and guilds. We'll go into further detail below. COMMUNICATIONS: This tab allows for someone to send mail, befriend others, invite to a party, invite to a guild, request a trade or duel or even send a marriage request. QUESTS: A player can find the quests they have completed or are currently on in this tab. SETTINGS: This tab originally held the options of: Options, Help and Logout. Options and Logout have been faded out and disabled. Nobody answers any of the help requests sent to GMs. [attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]SOCIAL [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] Next, we have the SOCIAL Tab. This will get it's own section due to the importance of this tab and how it relates to your roleplay experience. SOCIAL tabs are used to track friends, parties and guilds. We'll go over what each of these mean. FRIENDS: This allows for you to keep track of where your friend is. Once you approve someone's friend request, you can see their level, what floor they're on and whether they're online or not (The game will alert you when they log off). Of course, given the nature of the game, the log off alert indicates only one thing- death. Furthermore, players can only send mail or messages over long distances to people on their friend's lists.
PARTY: Partying up allows for people to keep track of each others HP in combat situations no matter the distance. Furthermore, parties are given boosts when completing dungeons, quests or events together. Party members are also able to easily communicate over long distances with each other. When a player holds their hand or fingers to either ear, as if using a bluetooth, anything they say will also be hear by players in their party no matter how far apart they are. Parties can be up to five players of any makeup of tanks, DPS or support specializations. Raids are required for bosses, but the amount of parties that can participate to the raid are dictated by the players. Raids are less 'raids' and more 'a group of parties working together'.
GUILD: Guilds are large groups of players that have banded together for a common goal. Guild members can use their communication tab to see what floor number other members are at and also to see if they are online or offline. Furthermore, guild members can send messages to each other without being on each others' friends list. They also have access to a group messaging system where all members can be messaged at once. Guilds offer the bonus of allowing groups to secure territory and always having others to back you up. Guilds can be set up by following the template found in the Guild Forum.

[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]LEVELING [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] Now, like most modern day MMORPGs, Sword Art Online is governed by levels for both players, their items and the skills they use! Item levels and their significance can be read about in the Combat Thread and the Equipment and Crafting Thread. A player's level is determined by the amount of EXP they gather and the quests they do. Certain quests will grant EXP as a normal or bonus reward along with regular rewards. This can be read about in our Quest Thread. Players gather EXP by posting. When you post a certain amount, you will automatically level up. This amount will grow as you grow in levels. For every level you gain, you will get +1 Stat Point. You can read more about stats and what to do with them in the Combat Thread. At certain levels, you can gain Sword Art and Skill slots. You can read about both of these further below. [attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]SKILLS [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"] Sword Art Online is unique among MMOs for more than just being the first Virtual Reality MMO. It also has little to no magic! That's right, most abilities are based in sword skills known as Sword Arts. While some Sword Arts provide special effects, outright magic is a no go in this world. You can read more about Sword Arts in our Combat Thread. Aside from Sword Arts, your character will also be using Skills. These skills are important for your character to progress in the game! They can range from crafting to advanced movement to even influence over monsters around you. They're incredibly useful, and we recommend players check them out in our site shop. You will need to purchase a “Badge” from the shop per skill level to advance your skill. Be careful with what skill you purchase though! You can't edit your skills later on. In Sword Art Online, skills range from levels 1 to 1000. However, to simplify it, we have broken down the skills to 6 Levels: F 0 E 1-200 D 201-400 C 401-600 B 601-800 A 801-1000 However, we'd like to note that there are limits to the amounts of skills you can possess. These limits are related to your level. Down below you can see the maximum amount of skills you can possess at certain levels. Of course, skill rank ups don't count towards your total skill count and weapon proficiencies don't either. Starting: 2 Level 5: 3 Level 10: 4 Level 20: 5 Level 30: 6 Level 40: 7 Level 50: 8 Level 60: 9 Level 70: 10 Level 80: 12 Level 90: 13 Level 100: 15 If you are caught with more skills than your level allows, your highest skills will be removed without refund until you are at the proper number for your level. If you notice you have accidentally purchased a skill it is your duty to approach a staff member about it immediately. The shop not only makes you add an item to the cart but also approve your purchases, there is no excuse for making a mistake and not alerting staff. Finally, skills that require certain stats require the base stats, as in the stat without any armor equipped.
