It never was much fun navigating the wildlands by oneself. He may have gotten lost easily, but the deeper he got the more it felt like a monster would strike and he would be forced to fend for himself. While realistically most of the creatures in this forest wouldn't be too much of a danger, it was still an unsettling feeling. Somehow he felt safer wandering through the real woods as a child than he did here armed with a spear and covered in iron plates.
His trek through the forest was hardly stealthy, the clinking of iron, rustling of bushes and crunching of fallen branches making a clear path behind him. He knew that there was a quest giver somewhere in this forest, one that he hadn't found before. If he was going to make any progress in this game he was going to have to seek out every quest he could, even ones in more dangerous areas like this. Hopefully he would come across an actual player in need of assistance along the way, which would add a bit more reason to this little journey.
Eventually he found the NPC, their cries and sniffles leading him to their location. He spoke to the young girl, her canned dialogue still managing to tug at his heart strings a bit. Why did they have to make these things so lifelike? After accepting the quest he threw up a beacon, resting himself on a log near the girl. There was always a chance that there was a player nearby that he could party with, which would make for a much more enjoyable and productive quest. All he would have to do is wait a while.

Gran was sitting under a tree near the NPC, legs crossed, back leaned against the trunk. She had her eyes closed and was lightly snoozing away, dreaming of perfect souffles and perfect men. She had propped herself up against the tree to wait for someone to answer her quest beacon. She hadn't realised that the beacon had timed out a while ago. She'd been sitting there for roughly five hours.
She sucked air through her nose sharply, eyes opening quickly. She'd heard a sound. She sat up straight and then peeked around the tree. Gran knew the NPC was talking to someone, but she was very curious as to whom. Silently praying for a large, hunky, bravado-type man, she finally managed to see the stranger. She sighed and shook her head solemnly. It was definitely a male, anyway.
With a shrug, she stood up and brushed the dirt off of her trousers, and checked to make sure her big mace was still strapped to her back. She gripped the handle for a moment, but didn't draw the weapon. Putting on her warmest smile, she walked around from the tree into plain sight and waved at the man in a friendly manner, "Good afternoon, quest spotting in the woods, are we?" Farmsalot

The older woman's sudden appearance came as a surprise to Farms, causing him to instinctively raise his weapon. He was expecting for a player to approach for a distance away, so for there to suddenly be someone, or something, this close immediately raise an alarm. As soon as he saw what approached him he felt overwhelmed with guilt. He immediately stood at attention, a hand moving to flip his visor up and reveal his poor distraught face.
"My goodness! I'm sorry, I'm so sorry ma'am. I didn't expect there to be another player so close by so I..." Initially he thought this was some sort of NPC. It simply didn't make sense of a woman of her age to be another player trapped in the game. But much to his surprise his cursor told him that it was indeed a fellow player. "I didn't startle you did I?" He didn't even notice she as armed as he approached her, the NPC mindlessly following behind him as he stepped forward. "We should really get you out of here." She didn't appear to be too well equipped, and the plants in this forest could be dangerous now that the quest was activated.
Farms opened up the menu and sent the woman an invite as he spoke. "This is a dangerous area, you know. But don't worry, I should be able to get us out of here safely."

Gran was going to say something snarky about being able to sneak up on younger people, but something about his face made her stop. She could feel something deep down as he continued on. She was caught between admiration and anger, and couldn't decide which one she would like to portray first. She could see it in his face that he was a kind young man, and she did adore the altruistic type. On the other hand, she had been carrying noobs in this game since almost the day she'd joined and she was wont to hit him with her mace. A menacing smile creeped onto her face, a shadow of doom beginning to loom behind her.
"Oh?" Gran's head tilted a bit to the side, her eye twitching ever so slightly. Her smile grew, as did the ominous sense of impending doom that was surrounding her. She continued on in her tight, almost angry sing-songy voice, "Oh, the man's going to help an old lady through the woods~"
She began to cackle lightly, almost like a witch might in popular American culture. She calmed down a bit then, and took a deep breath. So many people in this game had jumped between her not knowing anything about gaming and her being great at the game that being implied as completely helpless almost made her lose her cool. That was fine, she told herself mentally, she would just save his ass later. She begrudgingly accepted the party invite and looked up at the man.
"Well, dearie," Gran chuckled a bit, "Maybe when we get this quest done, I can go make some tea." Farmsalot

There was something menacing about the initially harmless older woman before him. Her smile, her laugh and her tone all gave him the impression that she wasn't to be trusted. This strongly conflicted with his initial desire to escort her through the woods, making him feel like he was the one who was going to need protection. In the end, his conscience won out. "Well...Yes. Or, no! I would never call you old ma'am. As they say, age is just a number, right? I just thought that..." He stopped mid sentence, realizing that the more he talked the deeper he dug himself.
After her unnerving cackle her manner seemed to change in intensity, calming down considerably. As she did so Farms would follow in suit, his muscles visibly relaxing as she spoke in manner much closer to what he expected from her. He smiled as she accepted the invitation and extended the offer, bowing his head in appreciation. "Thank you, but that isn't necessary. Though I may change my mind by the time we're through here." He had yet to fight these nepants, but he had heard tell that they were considerably more difficult than the pigs and boars he had delt with thus far.
Standing up straight he rested his spear on his shoulder, gesturing toward the path he cleared on his way to the quest giver. "It seems I left a pretty clear path. If we follow that we should be out of here before too long." With that he took point, hopefully with both Granxgran and the NPC following behind. "Keep your guard up, though. I suspect that starting the quest may have triggered some of the creatures in the area." She specifically mentioned nepants in the quest dialogue, something he didn't encounter any of on the way to her. Surely some would show themselves before too long.

Gran sat still and marveled at how she had almost hit this kid. He had been surprised by her, she realised, and that's why he'd acted like she was a useless old lady. She giggled as he flustered around with his words and she waved her hand in front of her face, as if shooing a fly. He might have upset her a bit, but she wasn't one to hold grudges for too long unless they were severe. And she knew she looked old and feeble.
She watched his shoulders relax as she calmed down and she smiled warmly. At least he was the kind of young man that knew when an old lady was upset. Or maybe she was terrifying, she wasn't sure. She nodded as he continued speaking. She'd remembered the little eggplant monsters from the information her little acquaintance had given her. Really, most of the information Gran received about combat nowadays came from her little info mole.
"Well," Gran chortled at the man, "I hope you're as ready for combat as I am."
With that, she pulled her large two handed mace from her back and laughed. She was more than ready for whatever this forest threw at them. Farmsalot

As they made their way through the forest Farms found himself feeling more and more guilty over how uncomfortable this woman made him feel. She was just an innocent older woman trapped in the game just like anyone else. If anything he should be worried for her safety, not her presence. While he tried his best to hide his discomfort he suspected she had very little trouble sniffing it out. Grandmas were just too astute sometimes. He kept his weapon ready, taking point to ensure he would be the first target of whatever they crossed paths with. His steps halted suddenly, a hand raising to signal for the others to stop as well. "Hold on..." Eyes scanned the area suspiciously as he spoke in a hushed voice. "Did you hear that? I think there was a-" He was stopped mid sentence as a long vine lashed out from among the trees and slapped him across his chestplate, catching him off guard and causing him to stumble slightly. It was a little embarrassing that he didn't notice the plant, as it clearly stood out from the surrounding flora. But now that he knew what they looked like first hand, he wasn't about to make the same mistake again. "Get back!" With it's attack revealing it's position, Farms charged toward the Little Nepent. As he drew near he took up a Sword Art stance, swinging his spear in a Horizontal Slash dealing 37 damage to the plant. It reeled back in reaction the blow, letting out a twisted screech. At least he could feel better about fighting this than he did with the pigs. Farmers killed plants all the time. Lv 2. Little Nepent 113/150 HP|30 STR|5 DEX

Gran was impressed. The kid was able to keep his cool pretty well for someone she had just given her death glare to. She watched as he lead the way like some hero, and she debated on pinching him in the rear to see his startled reaction. And then, she heard it. She calmly looked over at the enemy mob as it rustled towards them, almost completely ignoring the hand raised in the air that signaled for her to stop. She eyed the monster up and down to get a read for it, and she brought her mace to bear. She watched with a smile as Farmsalot got slapped by a vine and then retaliate in kind by basically pricking the thing with a stick.
As his attack ended, Gran bolted past, her mace drawn behind her in preparation of swinging. She passed Farms with a cackle, bringing her mace down upon the plant's top with a swift motion. The plant screeched in horror as its HP bar got chunked down to almost nothing. And then she slammed her mace into it again, not even bothering to launch a sword art with either of her attacks.

She put the bottom of her mace on the ground and smiled warmly as the Little Nepent screamed and shattered before her. She turned and raised a mocking eyebrow at Farms, "I believe the phrase you're looking for is 'Switch', am I wrong?"
She chortled a bit and spun her mace in a flourish. It felt pretty good to show someone up. Farmsalot

The next thing he knew, the monster had burst into shards of crystal. He stared at where the creature once was, brows furrowing in confusion as he looked over to Gran. One look at her weapon and armor told him everything he needed to know. Finally abandoning his previous stance Farms stood up straight, resting the shaft of his spear on his shoulder. "Maybe that's what I should have said. I'm sorry, I just didn't expect that out of you."
It was funny, really. The image of a grandmother bashing something with their walking stick, especially with so much damage. "I see you've equipped yourself for strength. An interesting choice." He gestured back to the path, giving her the chance to go first before making his way back to the cowering NPC. As soon as they drew near she began to show relief, smiling at the two and saying her NPC dialogue to express her thanks.
Her choice of equipment was interesting, though concerning at the same time. As they started back down the road, he decided to make that the topic of their discussion. "You deal a lot of damage, I'll give you that. But your armor doesn't look like it provides much...protection." Whenever he saw someone without a single piece of metal armor he had to feel some concern for them. With so little protection they would need to focus on evasion to survive, meaning that one missed step could be especially dangerous. "If you like, I could make you a couple pieces of iron armor. There's a chance their strength won't be as high, but it'll provide you with some constitution." | I DON'T need THE WHOLE PIE, I JUST WANT MY LITTLE SLICE

She smiled as the kid seemed to start to understand. She was no ordinary grandma who was stuck in this game. She was a woman with decades of real life experience. Gran was special. Maybe she'd grown a little reckless because of her body working like it use to when she had been in the military, but she was enjoying herself. She stuck the handle of her cane-mace into the ground and placed her hand on the tip of it. She liked to think of this as "cane form" for her weapon. She internally laughed at her own joke. She shot Farms a smile and shrugged lightly.
"I like the strength stat. I find it influences my actual capabilities, as well. Like, if I get it high enough, I could probably start lifting boulders. That'd be fun," Gran chortled along and walked past Farms.
She nodded kindly along with the NPC's generic dialogue. She almost wished Kayaba would've hired real actors to play out these NPC roles, but that would've been more disgusting than not. She sighed and twirled her cane before sticking back in to the ground a bit disdainfully. As they began to walk again, Gran pondered on the words Farms was speaking. Should she opt in for a bit of defense? She remained quiet for a good long while, scratching at her chin a bit. Long lists of possible outcomes were playing out in her mind.
Suddenly, she exhaled sharply and snapped her fingers. She pointed her cane at Farms and shook her head, "I appreciate your offer to help me out with defense, but I must decline."
"You see, this is like rock, paper, scissors, isn't it?" She chuckled a bit and bobbed her head a bit, as if shaking the idea around in her skull, "If everyone were to worry about defense, offense would be sorely lacking, wouldn't it? You might argue that a little defense is better than none, but I'd have to disagree. Take that last fight for example. If I were to do as much damage as you did, one of us would have less HP than otherwise, wouldn't we? If you can't burst down your opponent quickly, they'll knick a piece of you off. That will continue bit by bit until eventually one mob will be the death of you. Whereas, with my damage, I can kill enemies before they have a chance to even whiddle away at us. Maybe your defense will come in handy for things like single combat, but against drawn out, multiple enemy battles? You'd die eventually."
She had monologued for a good while, but she was sure that Farms understood her point. With a satisfied smile, she flipped her cane back around to be a mace again. She blew out a bit of air from her nose and eyed another mob that had risen up directly in their path this time. Another Little Nepent. It screeched as she darted towards it, mace drawn back and ready to destroy. She felt a vine whip next to her face, missing it by inches. She was exhilarated. A green light streaked as she launched a sword art. She smiled warmly as the plant shrieked in terror and she slapped it with her mace again. It shattered into shards of light and she turned to shrug at Farms, coy grin creeping on to her expression.
"I forgot to say switch. Sorry." Farmsalot

Lips pressed into a flat line as Gran spoke, her words being difficult for him to come to grips with. Yes, it was important that they be able to deal enough damage to kill monsters before they dealt too much damage, but still. Maybe she was just braver than he was, willing to sacrifice her own durability to protect others in her own way. Or maybe she was just reckless, who knew?
In the end he nodded, accepting the rejection of his offer. But there was still something that worried him. "It makes sense, in a way. Best defense is a good offense sort of thing. But that's still very dangerous. Without any constitution, you can't make any mistakes. Every time you slip up you lose a bigger piece of your life bar. It's easy to say you won't make mistakes, but this game is tricky." He idly tapped his spear against his pauldron, still processing the topic as he spoke. "I suppose so long as you're in a party who can lure enemies so you don't get overwhelmed it's fine. But with how much damage you deal I can't imagine you have much dexterity. It doesn't matter how much you hurt if you can't hit anything. Even worse, you won't be able to dodge attacks either. And if-"
He stopped mid thought, the screeching of a nepant causing him to hold his spear at the ready and turn toward the source. But of course, Gran had already dispatched the creature. Lips went from flat to a frown as he took a deep breath, eventually forcing a smile as Gran quipped at him. "Right. Well. I think I would just get in the way at this point." It was all well and fine that she could handle these creatures on her own. What he worried about was if she entered the labyrinth with an attitude like that. Hopefully she would have a good party with her. | I DON'T need THE WHOLE PIE, I JUST WANT MY LITTLE SLICE

Gran twirled her weapon back to being a cane and walked calmly over to Farmsalot. She stuck the cane in the ground next to his feet and looked up at him, her eyes squinting and eyebrows furling, "I know what I'm getting into, kid. One wrong move. One moment of hesitation. One poor decision. Even on party member failing to do their job."
Gran brought her finger up and ran it across her throat, "The slightest error will kill me. You might think I'm being rash or stupid or maybe cocky, and that's fine. You won't be the first. Then again, maybe I am being reckless. I mean, look at me. I've got something like ten years to live in the real world. Maybe twenty if I quit smoking."
She chortled and turned on her foot, leading the way to the edge of the forest. Talking about all of this was making her think about what it meant to do nothing but damage. What it meant to just hurt. She sighed and shook her head. This was no time to get nostalgic and sad. She could at least wait until they were out of the woods and had finished the quest. She tilted her head to the side and popped the ligaments in her neck.
"I know you're right, though," Gran nodded and frowned to herself, not bothering to look back at the kid, "That's why I never do anything alone usually. Back there with the NPC, I was waiting for a few hours for someone to respond to my quest beacon. I guess it must've timed out or something."
They were getting closer to their target now. Farmsalot

\ Farms braced himself as she approached him, fully expecting to be berated for questioning her. In all honesty he probably deserved it. He had gotten too comfortable and forgot how important it was to respect his elders. Brows rose in surprise as she seemed to agree with his points, admitting that the path she chose was a dangerous one.
She was still intense with her words and gestures, but the point came across clearly. She took the dangerous path, but it was necessary. "I respect that, Gran. Though if you don't mind me saying, you shouldn't place such little value on your own life. Even if you think you don't have a lot of time left. If we all do our part, we can all make it out of here in one piece." He smiled to himself, as he turned his spear to his shoulder. It wasn't until then that he realized that at some point Gran had taken the lead, something that only made sense from what he had seen of her. She was a leader, not a follower. All the more reason to respect her. "Besides, I bet there are people who would do anything to have just ten more years."
It was a relief to hear that she didn't run around trying to do quests on her own. Maybe that was what he initially assumed, leading him to worry as he did. So long as she had someone sturdy and smart with her she should be fine. Hopefully, at least. "That's good to hear. No matter who you are questing alone is not a good idea." He opened his menu as he spoke, navigating his way to the social menu and sending Gran a friend request. "If you ever want help with anything, let me know. I think we could work well together." Between her offense and his defense, it would make sense for the two of them to work together. No matter how capable she was, he was going to worry about the older woman. He simply couldn't help it. | I DON'T need THE WHOLE PIE, I JUST WANT MY LITTLE SLICE

Gran looked up at the sunlight that was slipping through the leaves high above them. She smiled and stretched her arms up, straightening out her back. She had to remind herself that this was all a simulation. She was still an old coot. She looked down to her legs and frowned. With a shrug, she looked over her shoulder at Farms and smiled.
"I'll be honest with you, kid," Her smile faded a bit, "I don't know if I want to leave this game."
It was a simple, but powerful statement. Anyone who knew her in the real world would understand completely. She was dying, really. She couldn't do anything at all outside of playing those video games with her grandson. But he'd grown up and stopped playing them, because his mother had forced him into some law school overseas and he'd had no time anymore. Of course, he'd gotten enough money from his father to buy Gran one of the new virtual reality devices. She wanted to laugh at the irony behind it. She shook her mind of the thoughts and continued walking.
"To clarify," she tried her best to push down the feeling of nostalgia, "In the real world, I'm in a wheelchair. I've got one eye left, and that one's getting worse by the day. Constant pain and the inability to do anything other than sometimes play a video game. So, being here and being able to move around like this . . . I don't know if I could willingly go back. Even if we do beat the game."
As she talked, she was moving her limbs around as if to punctuate the idea that she was whole again. She spun her cane in one hand and stuck the handle back in to the dirt, looking at the friend request that the kid had just sent her. She looked up at him as she accepted it and smiled warmly, "Careful there, bucko. I might end up asking for more help than you can give."
She gave him a wink and kept on the path. She could see Horunka's small buildings in the distance, just past the edge of the forest. Soon, the NPC would probably prattle on about how grateful she was to them, going on about how she wished she could thank them more than she was able to. All babble and no substance. Gran smiled as she was reminded of her own daughter. Farmsalot

Her words caused his heart to sink, his expression immediately overtaken by sadness. It wasn't just that she preferred this fictional world over the real one, although that was always a depressing thought. It just served as a reminder for what this world meant to so many people before they're lives were put at risk. This was an escape for people, he understood that now. People like Prince and Gran needed this so they could feel free. His stomach twisted in disgust, unable to fathom what could make someone do something so cruel. How could you take away someone's hope like this?
He took a deep breath, nodding along as she spoke of her real world ailments. It all came as a surprise to him. Before he thought Gran was one of those older women you would see jogging through the park early in the morning, still just as fit as she was sharp. Yet again, another aspect of the game he never considered. People needed this world more than he could have ever imagined. "Well..." How was he supposed to respond to such a depressing thought? There had to be some way to encourage her. After a brief pause a smile made it's way across his face, the previous calmness returning to his eyes. "This technology's really impressive, isn't it? So impressive that I bet there are plenty of other companies who will do all sorts of things with it. Even after we get out of here, I'm sure there will be another game for you before too much longer. After they add some safety measures, of course." No one would want a repeat of this incident.
His smile grew as the friend request was accepted, half expecting her to say she didn't need his help and brush it aside. Instead he got the exact opposite response, which only made him happier. "You could never ask too much from me. We're all in this together, so if there's anything I can do let me know. I'll always be willing to take a few hits for you." He bowed his head slightly as he spoke, far too involved in their conversation to notice that they were quickly approaching the edge of the forest.
