The weather was unnaturally humid, as if it was about to rain. It was disappointing to say the least to August; she had wanted some snow now that the seasons were changing, but it was pretty clear that a rain storm was due sometime later tonight. Next week she hoped, maybe next week there would be some snow somewhere.
She was careful not to make too much noise. Wandering around in an area like this by herself probably wasn’t the smartest idea. She was semi-confident in her ability to defend herself, but August was more inclined to turn and run if anything drastic happened. August wasn’t really in the mood to test out her sword, even though she really ought to have done that by now given that she had yet to poke a single creature with it.
The log had made an extremely unexpected noise when August accidentally kicked it with her foot. “Hello?” She asked quizzically as she bent over to peer inside. Huddled inside was an extremely flustered looking NPC. Listening to her request, August just chuckled nervously. “I honestly think they’re pretty scary too, but I don’t mind helping you get back home,” she replied, “we can avoid them together!”
Taking a few steps back, August gave the girl enough room to get herself out of the log. It was true that August had a sword now, but she still wasn’t very strong. If they ran into any of those pesky plant-like creatures, she wasn’t going to be able to offer much protection besides finding the closest exit path and dragging the NPC that way.
“Do you need help getting up?” she asked once the NPC had crawled out of the log. She offered out her hand, but an error message popped up in front of her. Oh, this was a quest trigger? August looked around hesitantly; there wasn’t anyone else around to accept it with her, was there?

Eris scowled at the cloudy, dark sky. She usually loved rain, but she had a suspicious feeling this was not going to be as pleasing as rain in the real world. Something about the little details that had programmed into the game irritated her. It was so achingly close to being realistic, but just this side of fake. It felt like a nightmare that you couldn't quite put your finger on. She closed her eyes and sighed. Everything about this game was making her irate. She stuck her hands in the small pockets of her basic clothes and looked around. She had been walking in the woods for a while now. She wasn't lost, of course. She was only getting a lay of the land in her mind for later use.
She yawned and started walking again. If the game followed regular weather patterns like the real world, she estimated that she had about 30 minutes before it started pouring rain. She shrugged, keeping her hand sin her pockets. It would take her about 10 minutes to get back to the town from her in she walked briskly. Plenty of time for a little more exploration. She went casually tromping through the fallen leaves, each footstep crunching softly as she moved forward smoothly. She hadn't ventured enough out of the towns up until this point. She hadn't even gotten any quests done yet.
She heard some voices, and slowed her pace, feet making almost no noise against the ground now. She chastised herself for not being able to get that hiding ability yet. It would come in handy at times like these. Being able to spy on people was a prospect she desired for the future. She peeked around a tree at the scene and scrunched her mouth to the side. The player was too cheerful. And far too chummy with the NPC. Wait, did that girl . . .
Eris sighed and started walking over to the pair, making no attempt at being quiet. She crossed her arms and leaned a bit tot he side, applying much more snark to her voice than was needed, "Don't tell me you think that NPC is an actual person. Like anyone would hide in a log like that, come on."
She suddenly realised that this was one of those quests she needed to do, and she let a small smile replace her scowl, "It's giving you a quest, right? You'll need someone else to take it on, I'm pretty sure. Quest out here in these deep dark spooky woods."
"Well," Eris craned her neck and made a show of looking around. It was getting darker now, "I don't see anyone else out here. I guess you'll have to take it with me, huh?" august

“What? Oh!” August yelped when she saw Eris approach. She hadn’t even notice the other player in the area; the NPC had taken up all of her focus. August shook her head violently, “No no, I know she’s an NPC. They have markers on their heads, see?” August said as she pointed above the NPC’s head, “but yes, this is a quest and you can’t take them by yourself. I’d love your help!”
She offered up a cheerful smile as the NPC began to whine about them not making it home before it rained. August turned her head over at the NPC with the same smile and stared at her until she quieted down before turning her attention back to Eris.
“We’re not too deep in the woods I don’t think, so this shouldn’t take long.” She didn’t want to get caught up in the rain either. It smelled weird here. She wasn’t sure how to pinpoint it exactly but it didn’t smell the same as the rain in her city. “I’m August, by the way,” she introduced herself.
Looking around, August bit her lip. She wasn’t exactly sure which way she had walked in to reach the log. “Do you have any idea where the exit is?” she asked Eris, “I was wandering around more than tracking my path.” The NPC didn’t seem to take this news well. She probably thought that these two players were going to get her even more lost. August was banking her luck on Eris remembering which way she had approached them. If she didn’t, they could always just try to find a path and follow it. eris

Eris felt her eye twitch a bit. She thought the woods were annoying. This girl was just so . . . happy. She watched the girl fluster about both in body and in speech. Her eye was threatening to spasm out it was trying to twitch so badly. she could feel her heart burning with indignation at this display of a porous skulled fool. She pushed down the feeling and shook her head a bit, letting out a calming breath. She would get no where if she acted on these emotions.
Eris began to respond, hoping her eye wouldn't twitch noticeably, she pointed casually to herself, "Eris. And I guess if there's no one else out here to help you, I'll have to."
She flicked through her menu with choppy, angry motions, reaching the social menu and sending out a party invite to the boisterously cheerful girl. She cocked her head to the side and ran through the mental map she'd made of the woods so far. She pivoted on her foot and pointed towards where the closest path was located, "That way is the nearest trail. Monsters spawn a lot less on well traveled paths, I've found. Probably our safest bet to get this NPC back to Horunka. Let's get started then."
She clicked on the accept button for the quest notification and began walking towards the tree line. The same path also lead to the mountain top. She'd have to remind herself not to go the wrong way when they reached the path. Eris had a lot of faith in her sense of direction, though. The only worry she had was this girl. She mentally shrugged. If anything, Eris would enjoy watching the girl flail about later. august

August accepted the party invite and the quest invite with a smile and linked arms with the NPC. “Just to make sure we don’t lose you,” she assured both Eris and the girl. It was be troublesome if they got separated; the two of them would have to search the woods for the NPC if she got lost, meaning they definitely weren’t going to get home before it rained.
“Not running into monsters would be great,” August commented, “I can sort of defend myself, but not really that well.” She had a sword and some stats, but August was really lacking in equipment. She would have to look into finding some crafters soon, but she never really had the time.
The NPC started whining again, but August quickly shushed her up by promising they were going to get her home. While she understood the NPC’s feelings, it was a bit sad to realize that once the quest was completed she was probably just going to get warped back into the woods for other players to stumble across her.
“Are you just wandering in the woods today?” August asked Eris in an attempt to start conversation, “or did you have other business we’re distracting you from?” August wasn’t sure yet what topics were allowed to be discussed or whether Eris even wanted to talk to her.
She was used to be surrounded by acquaintances or at least familiar faces, but now all she seemed to be meeting where strangers after strangers. It was a bit unsettling not running into the same person that often; there were only 10,000 of them here but they were all still on the first floor.

Eris scoffed a bit as August locked arms with the NPC, "You know it'll follow us pretty closely, right? It's a program that won't lose us randomly in the woods."
She shook her head disdainfully as she continued walking through the trees. The path wasn't far, if she was remembering correctly, and the math behind the lower spawn rate was pretty complicated, but effective. She found herself admiring how heavily the developers had worked on this. then, she found herself wondering if all of the developers knew what Kayaba had been planning. No, there was no way it wouldn't have leaked out if all of them knew.
"Yeah, lower spawn rates means safer travel for little players like us," Eris found herself responding a little too quickly to the girl. god, the friendliness everyone was having was starting to rub on her, "The path should be relatively close . . . oh, here it is."
The trees parted into a little opening for the road. It wasn't fancy or very wide, but it was large enough to allow trader wagons to travel along. Or at least, that was Eris' assumption. She had never actually seen a caravan of NPCs in this game yet. She'd have to keep an eye out for that. If she could find travelling NPCs that might sell some better equipment, that would be helpful. She got her bearings and pointed down on side of the dirt path, beginning to walk back towards Horunka.
"Huh?" Eris had been quiet for a while, and only just now realised August had asked her a question, "Oh. I uh. I was just kind of walking around, I guess? I kind of mentally map everything I can for later. Let's me plan escape routes or whatever." august

“You can never to be too careful,” August replied as she raised her arm and dragged the NPC’s arm up alongside hers. Maybe Eris was right, but August would rather be safe than sorry. She didn’t understand how quest mechanics completely worked with NPCs yet. The entire concept of these extremely life-like NPCs was something she was probably not going to get over anytime soon.
August followed behind Eris closely, maybe a little too closely. It was easy to consider August’s position as being inside the women’s personal space bubble, but August paid no mind to it. The NPC might not get lost, but that didn’t mean she might not. “That’s good!” The NPC made an ‘oof’ sound as her arm got suddenly yanked inwards so that August could clap her own two hands together. She was smiling again; good news always made her mood better.
Her eyes lit up with admiration when she heard Eris’s original reason for walking around the forest. Mentality mapping the area out sounded like a smart idea. “I hadn’t even thought of that,” August admitted, “that’s a good precaution to take. I could learn a thing or two from you.” She said that, but August doubted she would remember to do so for the other areas she visited. Making a mental map meant walking through all, if not most, of the area to get a good gauge of everything out there. It seemed like a lot of work that would easily bore her.
“Funny how I’ve never come across this road before,” she laughed as she kicked a small stone with her foot. She had been in here how many times now and never bothered to walk down this path? “I usually just go into the trees from some random point in town and hope I walk in a straight line. It’s been going pretty well so far.”

Eris nodded idly as August spoke to her. 'Never too careful' was a phrase her old friend would use literally every time Eris did something stupid. Which was more often than she would like to admit to. She sighed and continued down the road. She was pretty sure the Nepents the NPC had mentioned would only spawn off of the road, but she didn't like the chances of it happening anyway.
"Learn a thing or two?" A bit of venomous intent filled Eris' face for a moment, and she turned to give August a small, evil grin, "The things you would learn from me would require you to not be so nice, girl."
Eris let out a low pitched, hearty cackle, much like one would expect from a witch form an anime or something. She lifted her arms a bit and flaunted her poise by spinning around entirely, "Terrible things, dear! Things that make the bravest of men wet themselves in terror!"
She calmed down almost instantly and shook her head. It would seem like she was overacting for the role of a villain in a B rank american film about magic. She raised her hand to be in front of her nose and she waved it as if shooing a fly, "Sorry. I get a little overdramatic, sometimes. I don't know if anything I'm capable of would even scare a mouse, if I'm being honest." august

“Not sure if I can do that,” August admitted with a laugh. She had been told by many people before that maybe she ought to rein in how friendly she was, but it wasn’t possible. It was just how she was and there was too much in her for August to possibly try to bottle. Besides, it wasn’t as if she was leaking negativity everywhere; there were less favorable ways for her to act constantly.
Eris’s spin made the NPC tense; August could feel it against her own arm, but she didn’t really share the same fear. “Ah, well maybe I will just stick to learning about foresight.” She wasn’t all too keen about terrorizing people. August lived by the mindset that people were more willing to do things out of kindness than fear; the results were usually of higher quality too.
Chuckling, August used her free hand to pat Eris on the shoulder once. “I’m not that high of a level myself. It takes a bit of time but there’s still plenty we can do to catch up to the others.” Just as August removed her hand from Eris’s shoulder, she heard a squealing noise coming from behind them.
Both August and the NPC turned their heads at the same time to see a small pink pig running towards them. It looked furious, but not as intimidating as August assumed based on the noise it made. “Huh?” August remarked quizzically, “there are pigs running around here too?” It looked as if it was looking for a fight? Or maybe it was simply running away from something else much more terrifying then the three of them.
“Should we run? Or kill it?” those were really their only two options at this point. They were already on the road so it shouldn’t be too far of a walk now. Running to the side might just backtrack them. August wasn’t sure how strong the pig was, but she could try to take it on with if needed. It didn’t look particularly tough, but she didn’t want to make assumptions.

Eris smiled at August, a shadow still plaguing her expression, "Sure you can~ It just takes some decent emotional trauma and awful experiences. You got to get ready for that later, though. This game is going to warp a lot of people who are like you, you know. Great minds and kind hearts are going to warp by the end of this game. If we don't beat it, it will be because the players are too busy ripping each others' throats out."
With a nonchalant shrug, Eris kept walking down the path. She wondered just how well this kid would fare later on when things actually hit the fan. Sure, they were stuck in a game where death was permanent, but they hadn't all completely lost their minds yet. It was bound to happen eventually, it was only human nature. She found a piece of herself hoping that August never had to face such things that would harden her, but she ignored that little piece of herself.
She stiffened a bit as the girl patted her on the shoulder. Being touched was certainly a strange thing in this game. She shook her head in response with a frown, "Even if we do catch up, some players like myself won't be very connected to others. I don't know if you've realised or not, but I'm not the kind to make friends with people."
Eris' ears twitched. Was that something squealing towards them? She furled her eyebrows and whipped around, instantly pulling her sword out. Her lips flattened out seriously, and she raised an eyebrow at August, "Let's kill it." august

August frowned at the scenario Eris was laying out in front of her. That didn’t sound like much fun at all. People fighting one another instead of working together was inevitable, but August had hope that the majority of the 10,000 players were willing to cooperate so they could all make it out alive.
“I’d like to think I can stay the same.” She wouldn’t mind growth in the other direction from what Eris was mentioning, however. Someone was being a tad too cynical, or maybe August was the one being a tad too optimistic. “Aww, that’s okay,” she reassured Eris with a light pat on the shoulder, “you don’t really need friends to go out on quests and adventures.” She had a lot of friends (or people she considered to be her friend) but most of her quests were completed with strangers she had never met before. “Besides, if you get stronger and become more and more useful, then people would want to go do things with you because you’d be able to help them more than players that didn’t have as many skills and equipment.”
The pink-haired women’s face lit up at the suggestion. “Okay!” she agreed as she pulled out her own sword and charged at the pig. It didn’t even make an attempt to move out of the way as August hit it with a basic sword swing. “How do I-“ she began asking before she finally got her Horizontal Sword Art to activate. With a glowing light, she struck the pig again set it flying off its feet into a tree trunk. “Your turn!” she remarked enthusiastically as she started trotting out of the way.
The pig hadn’t been as tough as she had originally thought it would be. Truthfully, the closer it got to the two of them, the less worried August grew. The pig was much smaller and slower than she first anticipated when she saw it come barreling towards them.

Eris was ignoring everything August had to say to her. There wasn't enough money in the world to make her appreciate the conversation she was having with an upbeat naive little brat. She mentally scolded herself for being so mean in her thought process, but decided against changing her mind on the matter. The pig was bearing down on them, and Eris smiled wickedly at it. She hadn't been able to test out this sword for herself yet, and she was rather excited about being able to fight. She gripped her sword and pointed it at the swine. And then it barreled right into her. She felt a pain in her stomach and saw her health bar deplete a little more than she thought it was going to. This was bad.
"Changed my mind!" she panted out in a panic as the pig moved back a bit and started preparing for another attack, she turned completely around and aimed for the direction the nearest town would be, "RUN!"
With that, she bolted with no regard for either August or the NPC. The encounter suddenly made her realise that she was definitely not fit for combat in this game. Not in the slightest. She'd have to practice later when she was in the town, but that thought wasn't very important to her. Trees whipped past as she sprinted, a grimace forming on her face. august

“Oh? Uh...okay!” August quickly piped out in response to Eris telling her to run. She had only gotten hit once and the two of them could have easily taken it down in a turn or two. Look back at the pig, August shook her head and grabbed onto the NPC’s wrist tightly. She dragged the girl along as she ran after Eris. She was sprinting as quickly as she could without tripping up the NPC and causing her to fall. They still had a quest to complete after all.
August really hoped that Eris knew where she was going. The two of them were following her after all. Looking back, August saw the pig chasing after them, but the pink spec was quickly fading away behind all the brush and trees. Pigs were capable of moving faster than she had originally thought, but they were still faster. It didn’t take long for them to completely lose sight of the monster. “IT’S GONE NOW!” August shouted up ahead at Eris.
It was an attempt to get her to stop running, or at the very least slow down enough that August wouldn’t have to go so fast while also juggling the well-being of the NPC as well. If Eris didn’t choose to slow down, August supposed they could just keep running into town. Although, stamina was probably still a mechanic built in somewhere, unless the developers had modified it to be make it more video game-esque.

Eris was panting after that long sprint, slowing down to a slow walk. Thinking back, she realised it was a rather cowardly thing to do, but she hadn't come out here to fight. She hadn't been mentally prepared to take damage. She couldn't tell August that, of course. Still panting, Eris stopped and turned to watch August catch up. Eris bent over and put her hands on her knees, breathing heavily.
"Sorry about that, I just saw a couple more coming out from the woods, and I don't think we could've handle them," she lied through her teeth. She sighed and stood back up straight, nodding at August, who still had the NPC, "Well, with that out of the way, we should get going, right? Or-..."
Eris' eyes widened as a shadow loomed behind August suddenly. There was a sickening, acidic smell upon the air around them. Certainly it was coming from this shadow. It almost looked like an eggplant. It was turning slowly towards them, and she saw something akin to tentacles whipping around it frantically. They had stopped right in front of another, more powerful mob. She gulped and then motioned for August to run, flicking her hands frantically towards the direction they needed to go. And then she bolted.
This pattern of running into mobs and running from them continued until they reached Horunka by some miracle. The lower spawn rates of the path combined with their low level not alerting the game to spawn more enemies probably had something to do with their luck. Perhaps one day Eris would do this quest with equipment and manage to actually do it properly. Maybe. august ((There we go, I went ahead and basically ended it for you. Eris would like DEX, please.))
