Sonic had gotten a new spear from a new blacksmith friend he had made. The price was surprisingly low all things considered, and the result was far more impressive than his own attempt at the craft during the beta. One of the prices involved was accompanying him on a higher-ranked quest than usual, something that he was more than happy to do with his new spear. A chance to earn back some of the money he burned for all those crafting materials -D-rank materials were not cheap- along with getting stronger?[break][break]
Hell, yes.[break][break]
And as a beta tester -not that he’d admitted that to… well, anyone who wasn’t in the know yet- he knew all the locations of the higher-tier quests on this level. He had just the one in mind to test out this new bad boy in his hands as well as make sure that Ruler didn’t have the chance to, well… die from being butchered at the hands of a dire wolf. Those were nasty.[break][break]
Thus, while donned with his full assortment of new gear, he led Ruler to the innocent-seeming girl who had the details for this particular quest. However, when he got there there was already a short blonde girl by the NPC, who for some strange reason seemed vaguely familiar.[break][break]

rince's face was a bright red as the woman spoke about her troubles. The burnette in front of her may have been an NPC, but she was so life like. All the NPCs were like this. It was beyond creepy. She repeated the scripted text that was probably spoken dozens of times day. When she mentioned the mating part, Prince's face involuntarily blushed. Even if they were just NPCs and plants at that, it was still embarrassing to hear about that kind of stuff. [break][break] Prince gulped as she reached out to accept the quest. As she was doing so, a familiar voice reached her ears. The girl looked over her shoulder slowly, clearly nervous. When she saw the familiar Ruler and then an older familiar face, Prince's eyes darted to the ground before she dipped her head into a small bow. [break][break] "Erm... no... Back on the other side, Ruler didn't have many friends to rely on. Not because they hadn't tried to be. Ruler'd shut them out. Didn't want to rely on others.
In the game, he found he'd abandoned that stance. The greater his network of acquaintances grew, the more he could achieve. The labyrinth had already been opened. Strength needed to be built up.
It was a stroke of pure luck that Sonic wanted a new weapon. Even better luck that he agreed to help with a quest.
As if by another stroke of luck, they also came across Prince. She still looked mousey and scared. Ruler couldn't help but admire that despite her fears, she still wanted to go out and fight.
If only she'd stay her ground!
"Yaharro, Prince. Doing the same quest, huh?" He looked to Sonic and grinned. "Looks like it'll be three of us then."
Oh! He could actually see his weapons in action. Both the Zenith Sonic Spear, as well as the Princely Spear, right alongside his Curtana.
Ruler's grin brightened. With such equipment, this was their battle to lose. It all came down to keeping their calm and ensuring they'd stay calm.
"Well, that being the case, should we have Prince strike first, and then Sonic and I follow-up?"
Boars died to such a strategy. But...
"Er... unless either of you've fought plants before. I haven't. Do they have special tricks?" Compared to boars? |

Well, it was good news that the girl didn’t have a party yet because she looked to have real decent gear, but… how in the world did the girl know his username already? He was pretty sure he hadn’t seen this little blond girl before.[break][break]
The answer came from an unlikely source - Ruler. His eyes snapped towards Ruler, wide and surprised when he called the little girl Prince. First, the little girl didn’t look like a prince. Second… did he just imply that the blond guy that he’d met with the same name was the same guy? Because he knew that the game didn’t allow username repeats and he could practically hear the emphasis on the word like it was a name, not a title.[break][break]
He then turned his wide eyes to Prince and tilted his head. This… this…. ”...It’s nice to see you face-to-face for real this time, Prince. This… explains a lot.” Sonic deadpanned as he looked at the little girl, so many pieces falling into place with his- no HER past behavior. [break][break]
He then glanced over at Ruler at his strategy suggestion and hummed. ”Well, I’ve fought these plants before and the vines as well as its mouth are something to watch out for.” He then paused to bring up his menu to shoot Prince an invite before continuing. ”They have much longer reach than boars, so I’d actually recommend I move in to strike first then you two can surround it and attack while it’s distracted? I believe my weapon has good enough each… unless you’ve gotten a weapon with even better reach Prince?” Because now that he thought about it, he didn’t actually know the type of weapon that Prince used.[break][break]

rince hated running into players she met during beta and before the announcement. It always felt... horrible. They had known her as a tall princely figure- someone worthy of her name. Yet, now all they saw her sniveling true form. It was humiliating. This is why Prince kept her eyes to the ground, avoiding making eye contact with them. When she looked at them, it was like confronting the Prince she wanted to be when the game started and the Prince she was now. [break][break] ”Yeah... I'm here to do the nepent quest...” she spoke, confirming Ruler's words. When Sonic spoke, her ears turned red. Her turquoise eyes stayed locked on the ground in awkward silence. As they went on to speak about the monsters, Prince stayed quiet. She had avoided the nepents during the beta. They had been rather creepy looking. Honestly, she wasn't excited to fight them. Huh? Ruler stared quizzically between Sonic and Prince. The two knew each other from before? It hadn't seemed that way... ah. They had to have met in the Town of Beginnings, before... everything.
He didn't interject. Didn't have to, as Sonic easily launched into an explanation of the nepents they were going to fight.
Gosh, this guy loves lectures.
It wouldn't surprise Ruler if Sonic turned out to be a teacher.
What surprised him more was how bashful Prince was being. Wouldn't meeting an old friend be good? If they were already acquainted, then it didn't make sense to─oh.
That was what was going on. She had surprisingly mature tastes.
"Uuh, I only have a one-handed sword," Ruler said. "So... if you two are both spear-users, I can hang back and just last hit them? If you want? Would each of us attacking once vanquish 'em, though?"
Boars. Boars were easy. But Ruler was incredibly worried that the plants would prove stronger monsters.
They still needed to be careful. In a game where every life mattered, they couldn't afford to lose even a single one.

The blushing and and general lack of enthusiasm from this girl Prince was weird. He -she- was normally all rainbows and sunshine to the point where he sometimes wondered if they sold toothpaste and toothbrushes in here. Was it something he said? Or was it because she wasn’t hiding behind her shiny blond guy form anymore? He wasn’t sure why that was but he didn’t want to pry.[break][break]
So he pushed all thoughts of her strange behavior away for later and instead focused on strategizing. Two spears and a sword, huh? That would make do for now, especially if that spear of hers was anything near as good as what Ruler usually crafted.[break][break]
”That works. We’re going to be as terribly distracting as possible then you can stab it in the back.” Sonic remarked cheerfully. ”Don’t worry, nepents don’t seem that sturdy compared to the dreaded wolf that lurks around the floor, so three good hits should do it as long as we keep using Sword Arts.” [break][break]
He then turned to Prince and gave her a lopsided smile, having pretty much gotten over the appearance change because it was the internet and virtual reality, nothing new about that kind of lie. ”You mind waiting a bit for us to trigger dialogue and get the quest as well?” [break][break]

rince kept quiet as the boys spoke about strategy. Her eyes stayed down, focusing on the space in front of her as she opened the menu. She shifted to her inventory space and began shifting to find the needed spot. Prince hadn't actually equipped the spear that Ruler made for her. Once at the spear's location in her inventory, she pressed on the equip button. The item burst to life in her hands. The spear was just a bit taller than her. Prince gulped quietly as she held it. [break][break] ”I'm fine with that...” she spoke softly, still glancing down as she held her spear tightly. Prince wasn't sure if that was a good plan or not, but it was better than any plan she had... And she had no plans. When Sonic spoke again, Prince bit down on her lower lip. Ruler smiled brightly at the sight of his crafted weapon. There was something about creating things that filled him with an disproportionally large sense of pride.
Stabbing the nepents in the back hardly felt like glamorous combat, but efficiency trumped elegance. Especially in this case. Ruler still felt a little awkward about the frills he'd added to his weapons, a departure from the ideal that form followed function.
It was fun, though.
"Sounds like a plan." He nodded to Sonic, then cast a curious glance at Prince. Really mouse-like. He wondered what she'd do if someone crept up on her for a scare. Probably... "scream at the top of her lungs..." he mumbled.
He wanted so badly to ask her if she was maybe going to the same school as him! But there was simply no opportunity, and keeping Sonic waiting by talking to a girl he hardly even knew anyway would've been rude.
Ruler just tagged along Sonic to go through the dialogue and pick up the quest. |

At the agreements, Sonic closed the distance with the NPC and triggered its dialogue. After a short talk involving plant mating -and wondering why the nepents didn’t just use pollen or spores like other plants or fungi to mate and skip this problem entirely- he nodded and pressed the accept button.[break][break]
”Okay, come on kids let’s go.” He quipped as he stepped back and began to head towards their fields, fully expecting them to follow him and not quite noticing that he had gone into teacher mode again for the moment.[break][break]
As soon as they got close to the entrance of the field though, there was already a ‘little’ nepent -this thing was easily bigger than Prince- waving its vines aggressively as it leered at the adventurers. Beyond it, there were definitely other nepents doing… something with the corn. He wasn’t sure what and he wasn’t sure he wanted to know.[break][break]
So instead, he met the Nepents’ challenge and stabbed at it with his spear. Again, he managed to dodge away due to his new gear, but only barely, with one of its thorny vines nearly grazing his cheek. ”Uh, just charge on in for this one since I don’t think Ruler can maneuver around it to hit it from the back with it blocking the entrance like that.” He advised as he moved out of striking range.[break][break]

id Ruler say something? [break][break] Prince blinked as she glanced to Ruler as he mumbled something, but she couldn't really hear it. She shifted her gaze back to the ground in silence. When Sonic approached her along with Ruler after getting the quest, she gulped. Being called a kid... it felt way too normal for their situation. Also... It made her realized that Ruler wasn't any older than her. She glanced at him from the corner of her eyes curiously. Why did he look so familiar? [break][break] She followed Sonic to the entrance of the field, but when they found the Nepent standing guard, Prince gulped. They'd have to fight it to get through... right? When the Nepent and Sonic engaged in combat, her eyes widened. The grip on her spear tightened as she held it out in front of her. Thankfully, she was too short to see over the fence and... whatever the Nepents were doing with corn. [break][break] When Sonic spoke, Prince nodded and rushed in to slice down on the thorny vines that had been outstretched towards their blue haired 'teacher.' As the tip of her spear sliced down, the bar around the Nepent went down rapidly- just over one half of it's health was left. Ruler trotted behind Sonic, casting curious glances at the Nepenthes further ahead. They looked disgusting to him, with their wiry arms, bulbous forms, and who the hell put a mouth on them? Kayaba wanted to create nightmare fuel, he was sure of it.
He noticed Prince glancing at him, but did not comment on it. It wasn't like he hadn't stolen glances at her. Probably, she was looking at his odd-coloured eyes. Ruler shifted so she would only be able to see one of his eyes.
He didn't like to be stared at for them.
The group approached the Nepenthe as one, and after a quick strategy meeting, Sonic charged on in.
Ruler drew his sword. He did not make sure that Prince would be going in. He trusted she would. Past experiences showed that she did not lack for courage to attack. It was almost as if she just hated being hit.
Which would be almost hilarious if she were a tank, and this were any other game.
As it was, she was neither a tank, nor was this any game other than SAO.
Prince's attack power continued to be impressive, and coupled with Sonic's attack it felt like it wouldn't take too long to take down Nepenthes.
Ruler charged forward, sword raised. Two. One. The iron blade sliced deftly into the plant. |

Sonic’s lips pressed into a thin line when he saw that the two follow-up attacks after his didn’t quite slay the nepent like he thought it would. He thought their moves would have a little more kick than that, but he was wrong and so he quietly started to rethink their strategy.[break][break]
At the same time, as soon as Ruler sliced deep into the nepent he saw it raring back its vines for another attack. In response, his spear blurred, glowing green as it completely bisected the nepent before it could complete its swing at Ruler. The two pieces of the nepent fell to the ground and shattered in crystalline shards that obscured their vision for a moment.[break][break]

Prince pursed her lips gently as she noticed Sonic's expression. Was he... disappointed? Prince glanced down quietly. She didn't want to disappoint him... He was someone she had looked up to before joining the game. It had taken the girl a while to place his face, but now that she had seen more than a couple of times, who he was became obvious. He was one of the gamers she watched online. The girl glanced down, taking in a deep breath as her shoulders trembled. She... she had to show him she wasn't useless. She passed through the gate before looking about quietly. When she noticed a nearby nepent that was coiled around a corn stock, the girl pressed her lisp together tightly. It was embarrassing to see. Ruler could describe it no other way: the attack that should have killed the Nepent did not kill it. He recoiled, not at all eager to become the next prey.
Sonic's spear dealt a crushing blow to the creature, and it disappeared before it had a chance to commit a second attack.
"Whew! Thanks, Sonic. So now we can go onto the field and─"
Ruler looked over Sonic's shoulder. He decided Sonic was right: he had no interest whatsoever to find out what these plants were actually doing. Were they seriously... making it with the corn?
"As if Kayaba didn't convince us enough he's crazy," the boy grumbled. He readied himself to follow after Sonic, then reminded himself they had an actual strategy.
What was the strategy again? Prince moved. It had to do with Prince. She was flanking.
Ruler lagged a bit behind, but rushed to flank on the other side. He hoped it wouldn't be too slow, and closed in on the Nepent's side. Horizontal was quickly becoming a move he was so familiar with, it felt natural to perform. The sword raked through the Nepent, a second after Prince's uppercut,
He wasn't quite as strong as Prince, but Ruler hoped he wasn't dragging the group down anyway. |
