[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]COMBAT SYSTEM [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"]Here at Link Start we use a fairly easy to follow system for measuring the strength of characters and what they can do. Below in this thread you will find a handy dandy guide to how we run our combat system here.
[attr="class","link-title"]STATS [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"]Like in most video games, our characters will have their traits measured by stats. Here at Link Start, we use a three stat system to keep things nice and simple. Our stats are as follow: STRENGTH: This measure how strong your character is! Every point that goes into this is +1 to your damage. Some skills also require a certain base stat of strength to learn them, so make sure you read through the skills! These skills will generally have to do with intimidation or the use of your strength. Furthermore, some weapons require a specific base strength to wield them as well.
CONSTITUTION: Much like strength, constitution adds to your character. For every con point you get, you get +5HP to your health. Like strength, some skills require a base constitution to use them.
DEXTERITY: Dexterity measures how quickly your character can attack and react. Naturally, being faster than other players will lead to more room for dodging and more maneuvering. Furthermore, players with higher Dexterity than the monster or player they are fighting will always have the first move unless a skill is used. Skills that involve quick movement or agility will often require that your character's dexterity stat is at a certain level. Certain weapons are too light to be properly utilized unless you have a certain dexterity stat, and thus they can only be used by those with the proper stats. So, as you can see, stats here play a big part in how your character fights! There are three main ways to get stats on the site. These are: LEVELING: You gain 1 stat point every level that can go to whichever stat you want. Here at Link Start, our leveling is done through post count, so you should keep an eye on your level to see when you level up!
QUESTS: Yes! Quests of certain ranks grant certain amounts of stats!
ITEMS: Items can add to your stats when you wear them. However, these stats aren't your base stats. So if an item or skill requirement ever needs a certain base stat, make sure you don't include item stats! So, you got the stat points- how do you plug them into your character? Well, when you get them, you simply post in this notification thread to let staff know to add them to your mini profile. You should also post here when you're changing out what armor your character is wearing, whether it's store bought or crafted! Easy peasy, right?

[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]WEAPON STATS [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"]Alright, so now your stats are all taken care of! Let's move onto the next building block of combat on our site- weapons! On our site many weapons each have their own special skill that can be used in fights. Weapons come in all shapes and forms, and they can easily be mixed and matched to tailor a player's fighting methods. First, let's go over weapon ranks and levels. Every weapon has a rank and level. Your weapon's rank is a general broad term for what your weapon is made of and what it's capable of. Your weapon's level is generally just the item's level. If your character's level is higher than your weapon's by more than 15 levels, then you might want to consider a new weapon! Remember, weapons can be equipped regardless of your character's level! RANK F [LV. 1-5]: These are generally your beginner weapons that your character starts with. They're great for learning, but you should really try to replace them! RANK E [LV. 6-20]: These are better quality than Rank F weapons, but not by much! These weapons are the first step to properly gearing up for higher level content! RANK D [LV. 21-40]: Weapons will get better and better with each rank up- increasing in quality. RANK C [LV. 41-60] RANK B [LV. 61-80] RANK A [LV. 81-100] Now that we understand Ranks and Levels, let's look at our four basic weapon types. With the exception of special or unique weapons, all weapons fall into one of four categories. These categories are as follows: BALANCED: These weapons provide stable damage and usually require either no special prerequisites to use or both STR and DEX at a lower scale than other weapons. STRENGTH: These weapons generally have higher damage, but they require a certain amount of STR to use. These weapons generally have added effects that do more damage or bypass defenses. DEXTERITY: Like strength, these weapons require a certain amount of DEX to be utilized properly. These weapons also have added effects that will generally have to do with avoiding attacks or using your speed to your advantage. SHIELD: Shields in the game come in various sizes and require a certain amount of CON to use. Larger shields generally require an equal amount of STR and DEX to use in order to properly carry the shield and utilize it. Shields can generally only be used with one handed weapons, and they cannot be used with daggers or curved swords with rapiers being unwieldable with kite shields.

[attr="class","link-back"] [attr="class","link-title"]FIGHTING [attr="class","link-text"] [attr="class","link-text2"]So, now we know what our weapons do! Isn't that cool? Your weapons will play a large part in how your character clashes with both monsters and other players. Now, let's go over some basic combat rules for Link Start for both Player vs Environment and Player vs Player. DODGING: We discourage dodge spamming in quests and PvP matches with the exception of heavily dexterity based characters. Furthermore, you cannot attack or use a weapon skill in a post you dodge an attack in unless you are using a dagger type weapon. Our general rule of thumb is that you wont be able to dodge an opponent's attack constantly unless your Dexterity is at least five times higher than your opponent's. This may change on later floors as stats begin to grow larger.
AUTOHITTING: We understand that in the heat of the moment, you may word your post as if it is automatically hitting another player. We will only count this as an autohit and act accordingly if you: Do more actions after the strike in your post with the assumption it hit or do not properly respond to your opponents reply and act as if the strike hit even if they countered or dodged it.
SWORD ARTS AND WEAPON TRAITS: You may only use one Sword Art per post. You cannot use a weapon trait in the same post you use a Sword Art unless specified by the weapon.
ATTACKING LIMITS: For the most part we run on a common sense type system with a few rules in place to keep stuff from getting ridiculous. We only allow one basic attack, as in an attack not using a Sword Art, and one weapon trait per post or a sword art per post. One or the other unless specifically stated otherwise by the weapon you are using.
SWORD ART COOL DOWNS: You cannot use the same sword art twice in a row.
GODMODDING: Never control your opponent's actions without explicit permission. This will go over badly for you.
CONSEQUENCES: Here at Link Start, we believe actions have consequences. While you normally cannot kill someone's character without permission, this may change if:
-The character is constantly picking fights with others in attempts to goad them into anger and it reaches a point where it is considered harassment and attacking is self defense. -The character attempts to attack another player outside of a mutually agreed on spar. -The character just does something plain stupid, like trying to attack a level 6 monster as a level 1 all alone. Please remember that your actions have consequences!
ORANGE PLAYERS: Speaking of consequences! If your character attacks a green player outside of a mutually agreed on spar, trying to or succeeding in stealing an item, or attacking an NPC the green cursor's above their heads will turn Orange! Furthermore, Orange Players cannot enter villages or travel on roads without being chased and attacked by NPC Guards until they leave the area. Green Players can also freely attack and kill players with Orange Cursors without any consequences in game.
However, fear not, the Orange Cursor will be removed after 5 days. A player has 5 “strikes”. Upon their fifth infraction, they will become permanently orange and unable to return to green.
RED PLAYERS: Players that have killed a Green Player gain permanent Orange Color Cursors. These players hold all the disadvantages of Orange Players, with the added stigma of having murdered someone. Despite having orange cursors, they are called Red Players due to the blood on their hands.
DAMAGE: During any Player vs Player conflict, all damage is lowered by 3/4s. This means strikes that would do 4 damage do 1, ones that would do 20 do 5. Odd numbers will be rounded up.

On this site, we use Sword Arts. These are basically combat abilities that allow for certain effects and multiple strikes. That's pretty cool right? They can take a basic strike and maximize the output. However, you can only have a certain number of these cool abilities! Furthermore, you can only learn Sword Arts that are your level or lower. At certain levels, you gain 'Sword Art Slots' that let you learn more. Every time you gain a new slot, you can pick up a new Sword Art free of charge from the list! Sword Art Slots: Staring: 2 Level 5: 3 Level 10: 4 Level 20: 5 Level 30: 6 Level 40: 7 Level 50: 8 Level 60: 9 Level 70: 10 Level 80: 12 Level 90: 13 Level 100: 15
