Now that Sonic was going into the game again with the knowledge he had gained over beta, he knew that player-crafted weapons can be much better than the ones bought in the official game shops. He might even find a bargain if he looked around well enough within the player-made stores.[break][break]
However, he wasn’t sure which one of these ‘stores’ -and he used that term very loosely given the fact that players who wanted to sell items or their services didn’t have areas for it and so were just waving around signs or had signs floating over their heads above the cursor indicators- would offer him the bargain he was looking for and which stores were filled with posturing newbies thinking that they could make good shit with the base rank crafting skill. F ranks were only really for those who wanted to do it for fun or needed it because the shop didn’t sell any of those. It was really a Russian roulette sort of thing that kind of made him wish Areto’s shop was still here or that he kept his weapon crafting proficiency from the beta. But alas, they were starting anew and he was back to zero looking for a weapon.[break][break]
He then blinked and looked up when he saw one particularly promising-looking one that looked to be advertising being able to make E rank weapons. He made a beeline for that person and cleared his throat while making sure most of the crowd doesn’t get too good of a look at him because a fan might recognize him, which incidentally also reminded him to buy a cloak sometime. Coming to the plaza daily had become a habit for Ruler since the announcement. It wasn't because he wanted to be among people. In fact, he pointedly avoided Diz and Farmsalot sometimes, since there were times when he wanted to be alone.
Luckily, Diz and Farmsalot had their own things to do as well. Ruler supposed Diz was trying to get stronger (his cousin struck him as the type), and Farmsalot seemed pretty serious about crafting.
He had come to the plaza to advertise his skills. It'd taken a while, but he finally managed to hit the next level on his weapon crafting. The weapons he could forge now could turn out even better than the NPC. His one-handed sword was evidence of that.
Most people had passed him by, either uninterested in a new weapon, too poor, or they simply didn't notice him.
Ruler's confidence was starting to falter when finally, someone approached him. A bit of a tall guy with a purposeful stride, who'd already drawn Ruler's attention.
The boy licked his lips in anticipation, and when the man stood before him and requested a craft, he grinned widely.
"Yes! I'm definitely, totally open for requests!" He put the makeshift sign back into his inventory. "Well, it's for a weapon, right? Only my blacksmithing is high enough for E-Rank."
Ruler frowned and sized the man up. He'd been observing people who just bought weapons from the NPC. The boy'd formed some biases about people, and he wanted to see if he was right.
This guy... he'd buy a light weapon, Ruler figured.

Well, someone was certainly enthusiastic to get patronage. And proud too, considering that he was boasting about being the only one able to craft E-level weapons. Sonic wasn’t sure if that was true right now but he knew that certainly won’t be the case in the future given the pace of the game and the scope of it, but he’ll let the kid have his boasts.[break][break]
He smirked and chuckled. ”I’ll take your word for it for now.” He then nodded. ”I’ll be asking for an E-rank one-handed spear. A combat one though, not one of those flimsy ones made after throwing spears like javelins.” [break][break]
He then paused and realized that the kid might not know the distinctions between types of spears like he did. ”Not to insult you or anything, but do you know the difference between a combat spear used for melee and throwing spears like javelins? If not, I’ll be happy to describe them and even give you an idea on schematics and dimensions and whatnot.” He added, fully aware that he might sound like a weapon nut or a nerd right now. [break][break]
He couldn’t help it though since he loved spears so much. He actually did make a living with them when he wasn’t making internet videos after all.[break][break]

As far as Ruler knew, crafting involved hitting the base mats with a hammer often enough. That was mostly it. He did notice a difference in hammer strikes per weapon, Ruler needed extra research to determine if it meant anything.
When the man asked for a spear, Ruler thought about shafts and pikes. Certainly, he'd seen some in films when he was younger, and last year he'd seen one that featured a legendary spear, but... when it came to their exacts, he wasn't an expert.
This guy's pretty crazy about shafts, Ruler thought. He did not want to disappoint.
"E-Ranked spears, I can do," he said slowly, "but um. I think a javelin'd be lighter than a combat spear, right?" Because if you threw it, you didn't want it to be too heavy.
"If there's any advice you'd like to give, please do," the boy said, bowing his head slightly. "As thanks, I'll craft it free of charge." A pause. "I mean. For just the mats. No crafting fee."
He was grateful for a potential lesson in weaponry (and it could only help him), but not at the cost of an entire weapon. That'd be too pricey, and getting all the crafting equipment was already costly enough.
Ruler had his sights set high: he wanted to become the best blacksmith this side of Aincrad. Of course, he'd do some combat on the side, as per Diz's persuasion, but crafting was important, too. |

That’s all he knew? Sonic was not surprised that the only thing that the kid knew about spear differences was the one he pretty much spelled out. Spear knowledge was not nearly as common in the gaming community as sword knowledge because it wasn’t nearly as popular and represented in the media. A pitty considering that he thought that spears looked more awesome in a fight than a sword, but part of that was his bias talking.[break][break]
At least the kid was willing to listen and learn though, so that was something. And giving advice plus the crafting materials as a price to get a weapon, with no other charge? Sign him up for that![break][break]

He then cleared his throat and started explaining while he opened his inventory and took out the materials he had bought from the NPC shop. ”Anyways, you see, javelins are lighter because they are shorter and thinner than actual combat spears. This is because they are meant for throwing. Thus, javelins tend to be around shoulder height or even shorter to be able to easily toss them.” [break][break]
He offered the bag filled with the materials to the guy as he continued. ”Combat spears, on the other hand, are much longer, sturdier, and heavier than throwing spears. This is because you need them to be able to withstand multiple blows and use the longer reach to fend off foes. As such, the variation for these combat spears are much bigger around the world and whatnot.” [break][break]
His lecture continued for a little while longer, making interesting points about spear lengths and mentioning the ones he wanted while not making it boring. Eventually, he ended with a nod. ”And that’s all. Sorry for talking your ear off, kid. Sometimes I just fall into lecture mode.”

Out on the other side, knowledge was power. In that sense, Ruler considered that the more he knew about weapons, the stronger his crafts would be. Surely. Definitely.
He stared at Sonic, nodding intently as he explained about javelins. Ruler had seen them before on television, but the difference between a javelin and a regular spear was nearly lost on him. To his amateur appreciation, they were slightly narrower, with a flat head.
This knowledge was good, though. Ruler wasn't sure exactly how much intent played into crafting, but he figured it couldn't hurt to have good intentions.
Generally, the gist of it seemed to be that javelins were shorter and lighter, and combat spears were heavier and 'sturdier', however that was achieved. On first instance, Ruler thought it'd mean 'heavier' or 'thicker'.
Towards the end of the lecture, Ruler was already firing up his portable furnace, and had readied the rest of his equipment. His hammer already struck when Sonic apologised.
"S'okay, I don't mind," Ruler said, two syllables between each hammer strike. "Now just hang on a jiffy..."
At the twentieth hammer strike, which Ruler felt was the longest craft thus far, the mats finally took on the shape of what he'd wanted to achieve.
It was a long spear, about six feet tall and a few inches. For Ruler's own use, it'd be unwieldy. The spear tip itself was crudely crafted, but from Ruler's amateurish point of view, it looked like it'd serve for more than just jabs.
The boy whistled between his teeth. "Well... I don't mean to brag, but that's gotta be my best work yet," he said appraisingly. It looked like the weapon level was 20, a fair bit above his level 13 sword. The attack bonus was pretty decent: from what Ruler knew, spears had lower damage than one-handed swords.
"What's your name?" he asked, still holding the spear. A small menu had popped up, prompting him to name it. There was no doubt in Ruler's mind that he was naming this spear after its owner. |

Phew. The kid was okay with it. Not every kid was okay with an impromptu lecture after all, even if it was on weapons and sometimes even if they literally asked for it like this kid did. It was one of the earliest things he’d learned when he started helping out teaching in the dojo part-time back when he was still going to school and boy it sucked to be on the other side.[break][break]
He didn’t even mind that the kid had already started firing up his forge and hammering away by the end of it either, since he did like promptness. Thankfully this was a game though so he didn’t have to wait a week or maybe a few months to get a good weapon, but then at this level he wasn’t expecting all that much from weapons crafted by… well… anyone on this level, really. He knew just how expensive ranking up skills were after all.[break][break]
Watching the kid beat the metal into shape with consistent hammer strikes was kind of fascinating. He actually didn’t know how hammering metal automatically makes a spear, but that’s game logic for you. At least game logic made for an interesting show as the molten metal took on the shape of the spear with each blow, just like magic.[break][break]
When the spear fully materialized, he perked up at the size of it. It looked about just right for his height -even one-handed combat spears tended to be taller than their wielders- and though it looked a bit crude he was still excited to wield that over the even cruder thing he had been using before all of this.[break][break]
He did perk up when the kid said that it was his best work so far though, because that was a good sign even though he couldn’t see the stats of the item yet. ”That sounds great kid. And the name’s Sonic. What’s yours, by the way?” He asked as he watched the guy do… something with the spear.[break][break]

The spear was christened "Sonic Spear." Ruler double-checked the spelling to make sure he had it right. There was always the possibility it was 'Soniku' or something, but Ruler was guessing it was all supposed to be English.
"Ruler," the boy said, thumbing his chest. "I'm Ruler." By this point, he did not mind if people thought of it as a 'ruler of people', and he did not mention it was meant to be the tool used in maths to draw straight lines.
He held out the spear, which felt heavy in his hand. Just its looks alone were heaps and bounds above what he had made before. The rapier he'd made functioned as one, but as far as looks went was incredibly basic, and even a little awkward. The sword at his side was solid, but even there Ruler had hoped to sprinkle it with a little more oomph.
The boy supposed some of the oomph would be unlocked if he raised his crafting level even higher.
"Gotta get the D..." he mumbled without realising, spear held towards Sonic, but eyes cast down to the floor. |

Ruler, huh? Given the advertised name of the shop on the sign he’d had, he probably should have expected that. He did wonder if it was the royal connotation he was after or the measuring stick one. The latter would have been funny, but the former was far more likely.[break][break]
Eh, whatever the case was it was the kid’s business. ”Nice to meet ya, Ruler. And thanks for the craft.” He remarked as he took the spear from the guy and officially placed it in his inventory.[break][break]
To his credit, he paused only for a few moments when he read the name and managed to keep the commentary about it firmly in his mouth. His senseis would be so proud of him for his self-control. He could see it.[break][break]
Instead, he distracted himself by testing the weight and balance of the spear by hefting it and doing a vertical spin with it. Or rather, tried because he stopped after one revolution when he heard that odd statement from the kid. Did he really just mutter that? A kid? By the Kami.[break][break]
”Uh, kid, you said that out loud. Don’t mean to be rude, but I’m sure both you and I don’t want to hear your designs on your lover out in the open, no?” He quipped with a raised eyebrow.[break][break]

Ruler stared at his customer, dumb-founded. Just a moment ago, the man had been happily examining the spear. That was quite fine.
The problematic part came after that.
"Huuuuuh?!" Ruler's surprised cry resounded over town, causing the earth to reverberate and crack.
Well, not really. Just one or two heads turned, but most people were too pre-occupied with what they were doing to even give it more than a passing glance.
"Hold on, hold on, hold on!" Ruler thought about what he had just said. He'd introduced himself, that was all. What did that have to do with designs─
Realisation crept over the boy's face. He knew he had a habit of sometimes thinking out loud. Sometimes, people teased him over it.
He'd expressed his desire to obtain a D-Rank in crafting, but the man had gloriously misunderstood that for a desire for a d─
"A, a, are you nuts?!" Ruler stammered, face turning red. "I meant a D-Rank weapon craft! D-Rank weapon craft!!"
He shook his head wildly. "I don't even have a lover!" |

Wow. That scream was loud. Sonic grimaced and picked his ear with a pinky, feeling it ringing and stinging just a bit for being so close to the source of it. ”Scream a little louder, why don’t ‘cha? I don’t think they heard you over in Tolbana, Ruler.” He snarked as he shook his head to get rid of that ringing sound. A little louder and he might’ve thought that the kid had howl.[break][break]
Well, it was at least amusing to see a kid fluster because he’d slipped up and muttered the wrong thing within earshot of someone who knew better. Or rather, someone who knew the internet. Still, when the kid told him to ‘hold on’ he decided not to tease the kid further like he knew his best friend would have at that kind of slip-up. Besides, it was better if the kid found out for himself what he implied. It was funnier that way.[break][break]
It didn’t take long for the kid to realize it too, and damn was he right. He couldn’t resist smirking when the kid flustered and defended himself, stating that he was talking about D-rank crafting, not the other thing and that he didn’t even have a lover.[break][break]
”You sure? Coulda just been a Freudian slip, if y’know what I mean. It’s okay to want those sorts of things you know. I’m just not an acceptable target since I don’t swing that way.” He grinned like the Cheshire cat before laughing and waving his hand, deciding to have mercy on the kid. For now.[break][break]
”You can chill out though, I’m only teasing ya. You definitely look like the virgin sort.” He quipped. ”So anyways, D-rank crafting, eh? How far along are you in your quest for it?”[break][break]

Ruler huffed, and with a beet-red face glared at his customer. Even though it was bad manners, he felt like the guy had taken his joke a tad bit too far.
The admission he hadn't a lover struck a pang of regret with Ruler. It wasn't as though he'd never had the opportunity, but... it was impossibly hard to tell when a girl was in love with you, and to his once-in-a-lifetime 'senpai, I've always liked you', he'd only been able to stammer and flee the scene.
He wasn't sure what a 'Furyudian surippu' was, but it definitely sounded like a bad thing. Maybe... maybe Sonic was gay. Maybe Sonic was lusting after him.
Ruler shook his head furiously to dispel that thought. There was no way this guy was in love. It was all just a tease.
Still scowling, Ruler replied, "I'm... very close to D-Rank. I need a little more col to afford equipment, but..." his scowl made place for a thoughtful frown, "I should probably start charging a little extra for my crafts to speed it along a bit."
He pointed at the spear. "So! If you're ever looking to replace that spear, I can craft you a new one in two... no, one day... but it'll cost you more than a simple lecture and some mats." |

The beet red face and the glare only made Sonic more amused. Ah, to be young and easily flustered. Not that he could talk since Kiki made it a habit to fluster him as much as possible on a daily basis, but hey it was fun being on the other end of this for once. And with a person that didn’t make his heart feel like it was going crazy sometimes too, which made it even simultaneously both more and less satisfying, which he didn’t quite understand but that was how it was.[break][break]
His rather smug smirk became a thoughtful look when the kid explained that he was close to getting the type of crafting that he wanted but needed some more cash for the equipment for it. Then at the last part, he perked up and chuckled at the offer.[break][break]
”Probably for the best if you want to get the better and better skills. I’d tell you to remember to pace with your competition at least with terms of prices, but you probably already knew that.” He remarked with a nod. ”And I’ll most likely take you up on that if you keep doing good work like this. It’d probably be best to negotiate the price when the time comes for that though, eh?”[break][break]
He then placed his spear in inventory and nodded at the kid. ”Thanks for the spear~! By the way, do you recommend any armorers- sorry, armor blacksmithing players in the area? I’m also looking for some good armor to replace some of the basic gear I have on. Can’t be too ready after all.” Might as well get that one out of the way as well, right?[break][break]

Ruler wasn't sure if he liked this customer. He supposed he did, since his customerbase was still small, and this one at least stayed for a chat. Not that he was too sure he liked the chat itself.
"Mm, yeah, I'll keep an eye on competition..." Ruler said carefully. He hadn't seen anyone advertise crafts at his level, and he was so close to D-Rank he could taste it. If he didn't have any competition, couldn't he set prices however he liked?
The boy figured if he made it too outrageous, there'd spring up new crafters to take his place. And the point of the game wasn't to make money, but to clear it.
He didn't even have to think about armoursmiths, and grinned.
"Sure. I know one. Name's... Farmsalot. The name sounds a bit goofy, but he's as far as me with crafting. Might even be at D-Rank already, since I ran some quests as well." He wasn't sure if Farmsalot had run any quests. None with him since the locket, at least. Maybe a situation that warranted change.
Ruler neglected to mention Farms didn't charge a crafting fee. It made him a bit embarrassed, but he needed the col to afford all the equipment, and it felt unfair that everyone could spend their col on gear when he needed it to craft, and then couldn't even benefit from it. |

A guy named Farmsalot who might already have D-rank skills? Somehow… he was less surprised than he should have been considering how early it was in the game. However, the guy’s name was FARMSALOT and that screamed… well, basically what was on the tin. So the tip was promising, to say the least.[break][break]
”Sounds pretty good. I’m betting from the name that he’s some real proactive guy or something.” Sonic said with a nod. He then stepped back from Ruler and grinned.[break][break]
”Guess I know who to look for then. Do you know where he usually hangs out or will I search for myself?” Sonic asked as he was mentally starting to make plans to go look for more materials and then either this Farmsalot guy or another crafter with good crafting skills. [break][break]
He was pretty sure he still had money leftover from his initial purchasing to buy materials to craft some good pieces of armor as well as maybe the guy’s fee if he was the type to charge alright. He didn’t actually know how this new economy worked with the changes he’d seen with the prices and with the monsters, so that still left him with quite a few things to deal with just in case.[break][break]
