The execution was still a little slow, but it was more decisive than before. How’d Sonic figure that? Because as soon as Ruler’s sword dug deep into the nepent, it exploded into crystalline shards. They were all getting better at this three-man (two-man and a woman, but same thing) teamwork thing.[break][break]
”Okay team, that was better. Two down, five to go.” Sonic said in a much quieter voice, ignoring the faint stinging in his chest to start sneaking on the next nearby nepent. [break][break]
This one seemed to be so preoccupied with whatever it was doing to the corn that it didn’t notice the other nepent dying or them approaching despite the fact that his plate boots were not the quietest thing in the world, neither was the armor that the other two were wearing. It was just that focused on its task with the corn.[break][break]
Sonic paused for a moment, looking at both the corn and the creature intently for a moment before nodding to himself. After that moment, he took a few steps and swung his spear in a revolution for a Horizontal, cutting off the corn stalk and inflicting a very deep gash on the nepent that took down over a third of its HP with ease.[break][break]
The creature made a strange shrieking noise as it lashed out in pain, but this time Sonic managed to jump back and dodge in time to avoid the swinging vines.[break][break]

rince didn't think Kayaba had anything to do with the odd corn quest. Games were made by companies, not one man. While he may have spear headed the game and development of it, he still worked with a large group of people. People funded his game, people helped him write everything for it. Sure, at the end of the day, Kayaba put something evil into the game, but this game had been the work of a lot of people's hard work. [break][break] It made Prince sad to think that the game so many people bled and sweat to make had been turned evil behind their backs. Even the stupid corn mating quest was probably the work of some poor intern who thought it'd be a silly joke quest- not a quest that someone could die in real life while doing. PRINCE - sonic - Slight pace increase; figured at least one'd be aggro'd by the nearby fight... They had killed a plant, and were already moving on to the next one. Ruler realised he hadn't first figured out how many Nepents they were supposed to slay.
He figured it wouldn't matter. They'd keep at it until they were done. That was all there was to it. All there needed to be to it.
Ruler trained his eye on the next Nepent, the one Sonic was edging closer to.
His focus was broken by a voice.
"Huh? Um... oh! M, maybe...?" he stammered uncertainly. He hadn't expected Prince to talk. They weren't exactly best buddies who shared vast stories.
In fact, she seemed more like someone who didn't talk much anyway. How had she ever gathered─?
A shriek shook him out of his thoughts. Sonic had started the fight!
Prince dashed in for a quick attack, then hopped to the side.
Ruler followed suit. His Horizontal struck deep.
Another shriek, and the Nepent exploded into tiny particles.
The rustle of leaves and grass beside him. Ruler glanced to the side.
He felt the vines before he saw them. The blow knocked him back, and he touched the hard ground with his face.
The taste of mud came into his mouth, and he spat it out.

Probably wasn’t Kayaba? Sonic glanced over at Prince as she assaulted the angry nepent and shrugged. ”Maybe. Maybe not.” He didn’t really know and he doubted he’d ever be in a position to find out so it didn’t matter in the end anyway.[break][break]
He took a few more steps back as he watched Ruler follow up with a more decisive cut, this time shattering the nepent into shards with a single well-placed blow. They were definitely learning. Good.[break][break]
That celebratory thought was cut short when Ruler was suddenly assaulted by another nepent from out of the corner of his eye, causing him to frown even as he dashed forward and swept his spear in a half-circle for another Horizontal, cutting the vines and the creature’s… whatever it was that passed for flesh in plants.[break][break]
Thanks to his wider vision, he managed to see yet another one crawling its way there and he quickly disengaged from the first one, leaving it up to the two before swinging his spear up into another Uppercut to cut a deep hole in the nepent. For his troubles, he was batted away once more, causing him to grunt as it started to actually sting a lot this time as he staggered backwards.[break][break]
Hopefully the two get their shit together and kill that one quickly then help him with this one. One can hope.[break][break]

rince blinked as she sound of something else mixed the all too familiar shattered sound effect that came when monsters were killed. It was the sound of rustling... and then the sight of Ruler being knocked back and into the ground. Prince blinked before looking over her shoulder to the Nepent. That wasn't good. [break][break] Their fighting had caught the attention of two Nepents... One attacked Ruler... Sonic seemed to be trying to solve everything by himself. Prince gulped as she glanced back to Ruler, who still seemed to be recovering. The Nepent that Sonic had struck before moving to the next let out an angered screach before aiming for Ruler while he was vulnerable. Tears built up in the corner of her eyes as she took in a deep breath and shook her head, as if trying to clear her mind. [break][break] Prince released her deep breath before stepping between Ruler and the Nepent. As the vines lashed out, she spun her spear upward, batting away the monster's vines before slamming it down on the Nepent. Ruler's health had dropped. Not enough for worry. His worry was a follow-up attack. He looked up.
Gleaming armour blocked view of the plant. Prince? It had to be. Conquered fear to protect him.
Ruler scrambled to his feet. Couldn't sleep on the floor. Not while Prince was fighting. He glanced beside him. Sonic was fighting another Nepent. They wouldn't get help from him just yet.
A crack. He looked back. Prince smashed the Nepent with her spear. It made a strange noise. Ruler whirled past her. Curtana flashed, slicing through flesh.
Another screech. The Nepent staggered and stumbled, sidled back. It had a few pixels of health left.
"Th, thanks, Prince." His eyes still on the creature, sword held diagonal. "I'll take its hit, so─" tendrils slammed into his sword, and he slid back, "─finish him!"

Help wasn’t coming for him. Not fast enough, so Sonic decided to deal with this one first because it was probably at better health than the one the two kids were dealing with. So with gritted teeth, he swept back in and hit the thing with with another vertical slice, causing the thing to shriek out in pain. Just as he was going to turn around though, the last two had dislodged from the corn and was already lurching for them, vines waving angrily or creeping on the ground like roots as one followed the other and its mouth grinding its teeth -god the plants have TEETH- while growling. Someone didn’t like their, ahem, sexytimes disturbed. But they were doing this out in the open with poor innocent corn so they get no sympathy points from him.[break][break]
He chanced a glance over Prince and Ruler and saw that the plant they were dealing with was almost dead. They didn’t need his help at that point, which was good. He needed theirs for this next one though. [break][break]

here was no conquering fear. At least, not for Prince. Her fear was a constant demon dredging down on her mind. However, different people handled fear differently. Prince could still move despite the fear. Even though she was terrified and her hands wouldn't stop shaking, she moved. As Ruler got up, Prince glanced to him quickly. As he rushed forward to slash into the Nepent, the girl bit down on her lower lip. She took in a deep before following his act. Prince lunged forward to follow up, slicing through the monster. Ruler wanted to yell back that they were a little busy. That they weren't simply taking their time. He decided against. After all, there was plenty else to do.
Prince proved her experience by following up great. He wanted to flash her a thumbs up, but it wasn't the time. Instead, he set off after her.
Sonic, a true man of action, had already engaged one of the Nepents. The other Nepent lashed out towards Sonic as well. Ten feet reach was almost cheating.
Ruler interrupted the attack, batting away the vines with the blunt end of his sword. He closed the distance, and sliced the Nepent with Horizontal.
"I'll keep this one occupied!" The monster revealed a row of sharp teeth. Ruler regretted his decision almost immediately.

This wider and longer vision range can get really handy sometimes, what with it letting him see that Ruler was already moving in to engage the other monster plant before it could hit him. It almost made him wish that the manga and foreign comics he occasionally read did more with super vision-related powers so that he had actual stuff to compare it to.[break][break]
”That’s good! It’s all yours!” He shouted back as he ducked away from the little nepent’s flailing vines and then spun his spear vertically for another uppercut slash to cut a huge gash in the thing.[break][break]
The nepent shrieked in pain as its health dropped to low levels and tried to at least get a hit in by trying to smack Sonic’s face before it died, but he was much faster than it was. His weapon flashed out quickly in a horizontal revolution this time to cut the nepent in half. The halves of the nepent stayed stationary for a moment before losing color and shattering to pieces.[break][break]
He let out a relieved breath for a moment before turning to the last nepent, readying his spear as he moved closer to it. ”You guys need help or do you two want to kill it yourselves?” He asked them almost casually while the nepent was probably still attacking them. This may be a life-or-death game, but he didn’t want to potentially kill-steal without consent.[break][break]

rince glanced between the two nepents as the boys went to do their things. She gulped before moving to follow Ruler, deciding her probably needed the most help. After he blocked the attack on Sonic and took the aggro from the nepent, Prince made an effort to attack the Nepent from the side. She raised her spear to swipe down in a horizontal swipe. The tip of her spear slashed against the Nepent, leaving a trail of red glowing pixels that floated up. [break][break] ”I... I'll help!” she managed to squeak out as the Nepent turned it's tendrils towards her. Before she could do much else, the Nepent's vines whipped out, grabbing at her leg. Prince let out a yelp as she found herself falling back as the monster pulled on her leg. Her spear dropped from her hand in the chaos. The Nepent's vines began to pull her towards it. Sonic drew his attention with a statement more incredible than any he'd heard in the game so far. 'Do you need help?' This... this was a matter of life and death. Literal life and death. Dying didn't mean... whatever it meant in normal games.
It meant you had run out of 1-ups and would not go back to start to try over. No second chances!
So the question, 'Do you need help?' almost immediately demanded a 'Yeah duh!'
But Ruler did not say so. His momentary look of incredulity was rewarded by a vine swatting him down to the floor and taking a chunk from his health bar.
The grass was unfortunately very real, as was the mouthful of dirt he'd gotten. Ruler scrambled up. Someone yelped. Off to his side, Prince was meeting nearly the same fate.
Well, she was falling backwards. Had fallen backwards. A vine was still attached to her leg, inching her closer to the long row of teeth in the bulb.
Why did Nepents have teeth anyway?!
"H, hang on, I have this!" He grip tightened. Blade swung horizontally, aided by the system. The cleaving strike sent another streak of pixelated chunks from the monster's body, and it exploded in tiny specks of light.
That... that was all of them, right?
