Gran hummed to herself as she marched towards the farm where the first little pig quest had been. She had been having a relatively good day so far, even with this little brat she was toting around. She glanced over her shoulder at Icarus, wondering what he was thinking about all of this. She had insisted that he follow her. She had something along the lines of better loot and more enticing combat. She chuckled to herself. She knew he was probably going to get in a lot of trouble with this quest. She wouldn't have done this to him, but she felt like he still needed to understand just how dangerous this game actually was.
"Now listen," she stopped and turned to look at Icarus, eyebrow cocked, "if trouble arises, you just run your little ass off back to town, alright? I don't want to deal with you getting . . . tangled up."
She chortled and turned back around, nearing the NPC that would give them the quest to kill those little eggplants. Gran had specifically not told Icarus what kind of enemies they were facing, only because she wanted to see his face when the plants rose up around the corn stalks and started screeching. She kind of liked these things. As she got close to the quest giver, the notification popped up and the little girl started going along about how the Little Nepents just loved their corn. She accepted the quest after listening to the girl speak. She turned to Icarus and spun her mace around in her hand, grinning maliciously.
"They'll start spawning as soon as we get near that corn over there," Gran pointed to the plot of land the farm was set on and shrugged, "We won't get overwhelmed easily, because this quest was set up to teach about these new enemies before you face them in the wilderness, but be on guard. Weird things happen." icarus Quest

| | Well, this wasn’t exactly how he’d planned on spending his day, but the promise of loot and experience had convinced him to say yes anyway. After all, Gran had already pulled him through one quest successfully. Why not continue using her goodwill to level up faster?
He trotted along at her heels obediently, glancing around and trying to decipher where they were going. Any attempt to get information out of her before they left the safe zone had been a failure – he’d at least mostly been certain she wasn’t taking him out to PK him in the woods – and he’d simply had to assume she wouldn’t want to see him dead after spending so much time helping him before.
“I’ve fought one of these before,” he informed her, amused that she thought he was incapable of doing anything on his it. True, it had only been one, and even with Oni the fight had been a challenge, but he’d still managed to get the better of it. Houseplant, 0, Icarus, 1. And he was well aware of the range on those vines. “It took a while to kill it. Killing seven might take all afternoon.”

Gran was a little disappointed that she wouldn't be able to surprise him with the walking eggplants. She rather enjoyed watching people flutter about in a surprised panic. She wasn't sure why she was so sadistic, but it didn't matter that much to her. She smiled and shook her head sadly, "So you've seen 'em before? That kind of ruins my surprise."
Gran started walking towards the corn, spinning her mace joyfully, "But don't worry, kid. This won't take all afternoon, I promise."
She stopped spinning her mace, so that it was right side up. She placed both hands on the handle and laughed as one of the Little Nepents started rising from the ground. It rose from the tilled soil as if the farmers had planted it there. Vines came out of the dirt and flopped around as it made its entrance. With a shrill shriek, it faced towards Gran, sharp plant-like teeth gleaming in the sun. Like a venus fly trap mixed with an eggplant. She snickered.
Darting forward, she held her mace firmly. The smooth metal tip of it arced through the air and slammed against the side of the Nepent. It squealed. Gran almost regretted hitting the thing before it had made its entrance, but this was fine. She smacked it again with her mace and the HP bar drained drastically, until it didn't exist at all. The plant shattered into its beautiful shards and Gran turned to face Icarus with a smile on her face.
"See? We'll be done in time for afternoon tea." icarus

| | “Hopefully you’ll be able to forgive me.” Extremely pleased he wouldn’t just be dumped into the middle of the quest with no idea about the mob’s abilities or the realisation that the house plants could be a formidable foe, he hoped her disappointment over the spoiled surprise wouldn’t spread to her willingness to help him out. He just needed her to deal with the plants like she’d destroyed the hogs. Wham, bam, thank-you ma’am.
He magnanimously allowed her to go ahead of him, watching the plant appear from the ground as she approached the beloved corn. She killed it fluidly in two blows, with an ease that almost had him drooling with jealously, and he tried not to think too hard on how long the other one had taken for them to kill.
“My treat,” he promised her, more than willing to cover the expense of getting cake and a drink afterwards if it made his life easier now. “Do you prefer sweets, or savoury?”

Gran laughed at the kid and shrugged coyly, "Tea is about the only thing I let anyone treat me to. That and alcohol, but I don't think there's much alcohol here on the first floor."
Gran recalled a few times when people had offered to treat her to something, only to end up poisoning it or trying to kill her. She just loved when she use to be a political assassin. The buggers always underestimated ladies. Trying her best to not get too nostalgic, Gran spun her weapon a bit again and looked around. It seemed like they would need to get closer for more Nepents to spawn. She smiled and shrugged, moving closer to the corn. And then, she got her wish. More Nepents spawned. She silently cursed under her breath, and her face went straight. This was about to get interesting.
Three mounds of dirt were rising up. One was much bigger than the other two. Shrieks rang across the farm, seeming to echo against the tree line in the distance. She realised the game must have realised that she could destroy the plants easily, so it was going to balance things out for her. That was fine, she needed a challenge.
With a laugh, she lunged forward at the largest one, slamming her mace into it with no remorse. It let out a shrill noise, like it was in genuine pain. Gran admired the thought Kayaba had put into the monsters as she launched her second attack, shattering the plant's existence. Two left.

| | She liked tea. He’d have to remember that, when he was trying to butter her up in the future. Although the Japanese idea of tea was weird; he liked his brewed for a good ten minutes, with a good splash of milk and sugar, rather than the delicate barely-flavoured water that was preferred here.
His musings on tea were interrupted when far more plants erupted from the soil, including one that was far bigger than it should be. That hadn’t been in the quest description. He tried not to wince as the shrieks echoed, piercing, and hoped that Gran hadn’t stumbled into something she couldn’t handle. Not like he would be able to do much to help with anything she couldn’t deal with, even if he’d had any inclination to.
Sword remaining firmly in its sheath, he watched with attentive curiosity as he wondered how she would deal with this. Looked like he needn’t have worried. She dealt with the large one easily, shattering it before it even had a chance to go for her properly, though it left both small ones free to attack.
Icarus, bravely, took a step back. Hopefully they wouldn’t aggro onto him from here.

Gran tightened her jaw. She saw from the corner of her eye that Icarus had no intention of even trying to help her. A vine from one of the Nepents found itself slapping her in the face. She could feel the red mark that it left, glowing on her cheek. She was about to respond in kind when the other Nepent wrapped its vine around her ankle and tugged. Gran half scowled, half grinned. Her STR was at least twice the plant's. She reached down and grabbed the vine. She gave it a hard yank, and the plant was sent careening in her direction. While it screeched and flew towards her, Gran put both hands on the mace and swung it full force at the plant. The enemy face-planted into the mace, chunking its hp down. With a grimace, Gran lifted the mace up and struck down at the plant that had been knocked sideways.
She smiled as the enemy shattered into pieces. She turned to face the other plant just in time to see it ready its next attack. The vine cracked across her chest with a deafening sound, and she could feel pain course through her body upon contact. It was dulled, but there. She snarled at the plant and brought her mace to bear, ready to charge at the thing.

| | With only one left, Icarus decided it was time to finally join in and pretend he’d been useful. He freed his sword and angled it defensively towards the leftover plant. It was facing away from him, towards Gran, making him pretty confident that it wouldn’t just turn around and whack him. That previous blow looked like it hurt.
His sword flashed as he attacked, taking a chunk of its health bar in his double attack. Nothing in comparison to Gran’s attacks, but hey, at least he was trying? She was already perfectly aware of how low his stats were, so he didn’t feel particularly embarrassed by letting it show. Not any more than he already did, anyway.
“That was a less inspiring rescue than I’d hoped,” he joked, trying to make light of his lack of input into the rest of the fight. “But Christ, your damage is insane.”

Gran considered for a moment whether or not she should let the nepent attack Icarus. She smiled at the thought and swung her mace a couple of times at the eggplant. It shattered and she raised an eyebrow at Icarus, "Well of course, dear. My damage is super crazy deluxe insane, bro. Or whatever it is young people say these days."
Gran pointed at about where her HP bar should be on Icarus' hud and smiled, "Of course, my HP is on the verge of being in the yellow. From just one encounter. It's a trade off, really."
"Speaking of trade offs," Gran lifted her mace and pointed it at Icarus, "When are you going to get that blasted sword changed to a better one? You did what? Ten damage?"
She swore to herself that if he didn't have a weapon the next time, she was just going to buy one for him. It was stupid to not have a good weapon. She looked around them and wondered if the next encounter would be any more difficult. She did love a good challenge.[/blcokquote]

| | Considering how easily she had killed them, they had managed to take a decent chunk of HP off her in return. She’d decided to prioritise damage over survivability then; was that wise, when that extra sliver of hp could be the difference between life and death? He doubted everything would be as easily dealt with as the mobs for the beginner quests.
“I’m trying,” he muttered, childishly annoyed to be called out on his gear. “Everyone was busy with commissions already, or only able to make low level weapons. Or wanted a ridiculous amount of col. At least I found someone to make me some armour.”
With everyone aiming to explore the labyrinth, it seemed prices had exploded as players desperately grasped at every upgrade they could get. Was Gran planning on being one of the players racing to explore it? He could well believe it.
“Ever tried fighting one of those dire wolves?” He’d never even seen one himself, but tavern gossip suggested they were far worse than anything else found on the floor.

Gran shook her head with a sigh, "Well, to be honest, sometimes trying is all you can do. Like say, trying to help me fight these enemies. You need to get a feel for just how weak you are, dear. Otherwise you might get overconfident later and get skewered by a simple pig. Only a few people would want that, I'm sure."
She chortled along and tightened her grip on her mace. They were about in the center of the corn now. This is where things would get fun. How many little nepents had they killed now? She looked up to the counter and sighed. Three out of seven. So the large one didn't count, then? That was fine. She turned to face another rising mound of dirt. As soon as the skin on the top of its head was revealed, Gran smacked it with her mace. Like whack-a-mole. She smiled at the thought and hit it again, watching it shatter before it even came out of the dirt. Four out of seven.
"To answer your question," Gran shot Icarus a glance, "I've seen a couple people fighting the wolves, but I haven't fought one myself yet. I haven't had a strong enough party to back me up for it yet. I'm strong and brave and old, but I'm not stupid. If the game threw wolves at me like it threw these eggplants, I'd die instantly." icarus

| | “I can’t imagine anyone wishing me harm.” Over-dramatically pitched, the layer of sarcasm was audible. For some reason, despite her tendency to take the piss out of him constantly, he felt easy with her, as if it didn’t matter that he wasn’t the best. He’d still like to be, but he didn’t think it would even make that much of a difference to her.
Four little nepents dead. At least he’d hit one, he supposed, though it was ridiculous how easily he could be carried through this quest. When the first floor boss was finally found and defeated, would this be possible on the second floor? Players who hadn’t even stepped foot out of the Town of Beginnings, helped through the harder quests there until they were on par with the others? Irritating if it turned out to be true, but the unknown timeframe made him loathe to wait to find out. He was far enough behind already without risking falling further.
He started to reply to her about the wolves, though was abruptly cut off when a little nepent spawned, unseen, right behind him. A tendril lashed out to tangle around his legs, sending him sprawling – and still entangled – right to the floor, sword not even out.

"What?" Gran layered her voice with snark, making fun of Icarus' sarcastic response, "You mean you're not the main villain of this story? Oh man, and I'd taken you all the way out here to talk you down from your evil ways!"
She put her hand on her chest and tilted her head to the side with a dramatic sigh. She thought about what to say next. Maybe some comment about how he carried himself like a buffoon. And then, he was caught up. It took Gran a moment to realise a nepent had spawned near them and was attacking Icarus. She watched as the vine wrapped around the kid quickly, and yanked him away. She stood there with a raised eyebrow as Icarus' faceplanted into the ground. She considered laughing at him, but shook her head. That would be demeaning. She casually stepped over him and walked closer to the little nepent. Two swings of her mace and it was no more. Five out of seven.
"Come on, kid," she turned and looked at Icarus, crooked smile growing on her face, "Surely you can do better than that?" icarus

| | The vine snaked around his legs splintered into fragments, abruptly releasing them, though he was sure he’d still have red marks under the trousers. With an exhaled huff of irritation, he pressed his palms into the floor and levered himself back to his feet, embarrassed but not dramatically hurt.
His cheeks warmed slightly at her words, though he forced himself to flatten his scowl before it became too apparent. He needed her, so he would just have to tolerate whatever abuse she threw his way. Giving excuses for his inattention would just make him look even more incompetent so he simply took the criticism, eyes not quite meeting hers. “What can I say? You make me feel safe.”
Unwilling to get drawn into more critique of his tumble, he launched himself fluidly at the next nepent to spawn, sword slicing through cleanly and yet still doing irritatingly little damage. He was definitely becoming more accustomed to the foreign movements, attacks less jerky and more economical, though the lack of gear meant he was still next to worthless as a combat ally.

Gran frowned and raised her eyebrow at Icarus. She could've sworn she'd seen a moment of anger flash across his face. She made him feel safe, huh? She smiled again and shook her head, an mockingly evil look showing in her eyes, "You shouldn't feel any level of safe around me. I could sneeze on you and kill you."
She watched as another Nepent spawned and he darted off to fight it. She figured her words were finally starting to get to him. If nothing else, he certainly seemed to be moving better than before. That was good. She wanted to laugh as he cut into the mob to deal next to no damage whatsoever, but decided to help him instead. She cracked her neck slightly and ran after him. The eggplant was no match for her walking stick. She smiled as it shattered from a couple blows and she looked at Icarus, "Six out of seven."
She spun her mace around in her hand and wondered when the game was going to get more difficult. icarus
