As he walked towards the quest destination, Yami mused on how the weather in the game mimicked that of real life nearly perfectly. The forest around him was covered in snow that looked as though it had fallen naturally and not simply programmed into the game by a madman with a god complex. It just went to show, genius didn't always come with sanity to balance it out.
He pulled up the quest description as he walked, running over the details again. A rather pushy NPC had asked him to find some mistletoe and sent him in the general direction of the forest. It seemed like a simple gathering quest that would simply take a bit of time, but he knew better than to just trust the appearance of something by now. With his luck, he would run into some kind of mini-boss and be wiped out. At least then he wouldn't be living a a constant state of fear of death.
He continued walking, hoping that he would get there sooner rather than later, and get it over and done with. Just a few more quests and he would think about entering the labyrinth, ready or not. The waiting was killing him anyway.

It was amazing how a virtual world could be so authentic and artificial at the same time. Surrounded by mounds of snow and marching through an iced over ground on the way to the quest he had just accepted, Jinei's first response was to shiver despite lacking any sensation of actually feeling cold. It was a curious thing. The quest itself seemed rather straight forward, even if the NPC who handed it out had not been. Find some mistletoe and return it. Things were rarely that simple in games though.
As a relatively new player, Jinei had hoped to have some help before this started, at least until he was strong enough to stand on his own, but none had shown. However, a stroke of luck guided him through the forest as he ambled up upon another person. Jinei let his naivete of this world get the best of him as he flung a hand up and yelled out. He was loud enough that the man should hear him, but not so loud the whole forest could.
"Yo. Looking for some Mistletoe?"
Knowing Jin's luck, He was about to be attacked. No visual signs were made, but mentally he prepared himself to draw his sword as fast as he could, should he need to. His naivete had already won once, but he would not let it cost him his life as he remained on guard. The ideal situation here would be to party up and find the mistletoe together. However, things were rarely that simple in games.

Raiken walked through the frozen wasteland that was now Aincrad, most people would stare at the site of the snow covered level with wonder. Raiken was cursing under her frosted breath due to the dulled sensations of cold that was permeating her virtual body. 'Why am I doing this mistletoe quest again,' she asked herself while walking. 'Wait it gave pretty good experience,' she thought glumly while she walked through the frozen death trap of a forest.
Eventually she would notice two other people in the forest in front of her. Walking towards them she saw someone she's met a couple times. She didn't know his name, but she knew his blue hair. She had made a sword for him, it wasn't a good sword but it was better than what they had at the beginning.
Raiken then saw the other person with him, she never met the person before. 'If they're taking the Mistletoe quest they'll die,' she thought while examining their gear. Yami had different clothing, but still had some of the basic gear and her sword. The other person had nothing that could help him in the quest, even his blade was the basic piece o' **** that they got at character creation. Going through her inventory, she saw she still had that beginner's xiphos she had made but no one had bothered to buy.
Approaching them with her entire body covered in the white cloak and with her hood up she appeared like a winter wraith. She approached them silently, almost gliding over the snow. Stopping several feet away from the, she spoke in a monotone. "You will both die," she said without bothering to undo her hood so they could see her face. If anything Yami would be able to tell who Raiken was through her voice, but not the other person.

Yami was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't even notice the other boy until he spoke. He quickly turned around, identifying the source of the noise as his hand flew towards the hilt of his blade. When he saw that it was a player he remained suspicious, but noted that his gear was worse than what he had on. If he tried anything funny, he would get a surprise.
"And what if I am? You looking to..." Before he could finish, the girl that had snuck up on them made her presence known, and as soon as Yami saw her he freaked out. She looked just like a ghost, one of the few things that completely freaked him out, and he drew his sword with a shaking hand. "W-what do you mean we will die?" Deep in the back of his mind the voice was familiar, but that fact was largely drowned out by the terror she had induced. The one way to make a death game even scarier is to make a ghost show up. Jinei, being a fairly good judge of character, derived a lot of information from the brief exchange that he had just witnessed. It seemed the fellow with the blue hair was on edge about something. Most likely it was just the circumstances of the game itself. He seemed a bit more at ease now, but was likely still on guard. You don't get that worked up about something just to have all that unease go away instantly. Smoothing this over would be the easiest course of action.
Then there was the female. The first thing Jinei noticed about her is that she is rude. Had she wanted to join in the conversation she simply had to wait her turn. Jinei could tell she was not an enemy though. She was quite calm, which means she had a fair bit of experience and with that she could have simply killed them both most likely had she wished to. There was no need to make her presence known before hand. The cogs of Jinei's mind began to turn as he though of how best to approach this.
"Well, Miss, you are working under the assumption that my new friend here and I only have what you can see. The fact of the matter is, you don't know what we are capable of, nor do you know what equipment we may be getting ready to change into. It is quite commonplace in games like this where you cant see your opponents level to hide in lower ranked gear to lure out prey. However, if you are that worried about us, you are more than welcome to join us and save us from harm. What do you say?"
With that, Jinei took his sword hand and extended it out for a handshake with a smile. It was more symbolic than for an actual handshake. With his sword arm out, he would be hard pressed to get it back to his sword in time to draw it. It essentially meant that Jinei meant no harm to either of them. Not that he could hurt either of them as it were, he was hilariously outclassed. Hopefully a good bluff would carry him through this encounter.

Raiken simply stared at Yami's reaction to her appearance with a blank look. Reaching her hands to her hood, she let it fall after moving it off her head. Listening to the man's words she smirked slightly, "I know exactly what the both of you are capable of. I have done a quest with Yami before, and I forged your swords," she said calmly with the same monotone as before. "As for the dying part, well…. The Large Nepents in this area are much more dangerous than those pigs we killed on that quest," she said.
"I've taken this quest before trust me," she continued on as the young teen's facial features did not alter from what they were. "Working together we will be able to kill them in a single combination attack," she said before growing silent. She knew she had forged their swords because on the slip that she made everyone fill out when they want custom swords, they had to fill out their name. That and the hilt of Jinei's sword was exactly the same as Yami's sword. But they didn't need to know that she could easily recognize her own workmanship.
"I will go in first, then you two go in from the sides," she said before inviting them to her party and pulling her hood back over her head so her dexterity boost would kick in. She was slightly faster than Nepents, but still wasn't fast enough to dodge all of their attacks. "Nice bluff by the way," she said to the dark haired young man. "No one would go into the wilderness without their armor already equipped. The Dire wolves are too dangerous without it and there is no telling when one may appear," she said telling him exactly how she knew he was bluffing.

As the girl lowered her hood, Yami recognized the person who had made his sword. He hadn't really expect to run into her anytime soon, but it was almost like she was hanging around him, the way they kept meeting. He tried to recover from his embarrassing bout of fear, but probably just looked stupid. The other guy was busy trying to play off his terrible equipment with some kind of excuse, but both Yami and Raiken saw through it. His reasoning just wasn't logical.
Yami saw the girl prepare herself, and realized that she must have been serious about the nepants. He hadn't realized that the quest would have scripted enemies, but it made sense the more he thought about it. Why would there be a simple gathering quest that required sending them out this far into the wilderness. He grabbed the hilt of his blade and pulled it out just far enough that the blade showed about an inch, and accepted the in it with his other. "If we are expecting combat then it makes sense to team up. How many were there when you did this before?" The more they knew the higher their chances of survival after all. Template by Ocean on THQ
