| [attr="class","whistle"]The game had been the talk of everyone for quite some time. It seemed as though age wasn't a factor either. No matter who or how old you were, in some shape or fashion, you had heard of Sword Art Online. And more likely than not, you were one of the many who sent your email and information out to Argus in hopes of being lucky enough to be a beta tester. Months went by and everyone still kept their hues glued to there laptop and computer screens. Waiting, praying, pleading for an email with a verification link. There was no way to know who would be chosen or why. It was simply a luck of the draw deal. And those were always disheartening. Especially for Chihi-- er, Sevyn.
Somehow, his luck had managed to turn around and he had received the glorious email. Needless to say, he cleared his schedule and made his way to his computer with not a second to spare. Creating a username, customizing his avatar, and soon; emerging himself in game. It was excellent timing. He had been looking for something to take his mind off things. And all of his other games had expended their use. And of course, he could have very well been working on his school work and such. But what was the fun in that? His grade were good and he wasn't a delinquent. He earned some free time.
And speaking of which, he would use said free time to actually "beta test". Among most of the players, it seemed socializing was the preferred method of testing the software and functions. Which was perfectly fine. However, Sevyn had no need to make friends just yet. Instead, he wanted to test out the difficulty of the missions and monster's in general. So he made his way through the other players and found a quest that, tickled his fancy. More specifically, it caused a twitch of his brow and tinge of disdain. "Challenge accepted."
Click. Click. Click. The quest in question had been accepted. Surely he would make it to the top of this mountain with no pr—eh? Piercing green hues took notice to the participants. No longer had it stated he was alone. "I guess someone else got bored of chatting aimlessly?" Head craned about, searching for another body. Who could it be? A pro gamer? A sponsor? Just some lucky kid like himself? [attr="class","whistlenotes"] ▇ ARETO

The city was becoming crowded with other players wanting to make their mark on the game or interact with others. After a brief encounter with another player, Areto was prepared to adventure outside of the Town of Beginnings and see what the rest of the world was like. Albeit for the first beta, they were rather limited when it came to where they could go, and the rest of the floors which was advertised by Argus had been cut off for use. Areto didn't really mind, though. This felt good enough in itself. With the wind blowing through his hair and the dirt path leading him to wherever he wanted to go, it was only a matter of time before he found something, or at least he was hoping. But after some time of walking through fields of grass and stopping to smell the flowers or even lay in them — he wanted something else to do.
Areto laid for a moment with his hands behind his head and stared aimlessly at the clouds. He heard the shuffling of boots in the grass and a shadow loomed over him for a moment. Glancing up in surprise, he met the eyes of an older man who almost looked close in age with his father. Sitting up and turning to look back at him, the man seemed to be waiting for something and Areto soon figured that he may have been laying in the place where he was trying to go. Stepping aside, the man stepped forward and took a position with the same kind smile on his face.
Must be another NPC.
They looked so life-like as though they could be real people that it was harder to tell everytime. Nonetheless, Areto struck a conversation with him and listened to the prompt that the man gave. A mountain?
That sounded like fun and climbing it would be even greater but he needed at least one other persona and Reveska wasn't going to help after he teased her. He wondered if that stranger from before would be any good at the moment. Probably so.
He accepted the quest and sat down on a nearby rock, waiting for someone to come by. A few minutes passed by and at some point Areto had fallen asleep only to be awoken by the sound of someone speaking. Wiping the sleep from his eyes, he raised his hand.
"Over here!"

| [attr="class","whistle"]While searching about for any sign of life, er well, virtual life that is; Sevyn's train of thought began to move at a rapid pace. Contemplating on whether or not he should just take on this mission on his lonesome. He had played a plenty of games before, albeit no where near as complex and well made as this. But still, how hard could it be to climb a mountain? It would just be a game of speed and possibly battling like, what, the occasional mountain troll? Couldn't be too hard, right? Although... his hand moved to rest underneath his chin. If he happened to be met with some sort of horde, he would be doomed. Especially at his level.
So maybe it'd be best if he actually waited for the other to show up. He wouldn't have to spend any unnecessary time chatting away with his... temporary partner. So it was settled! For the time being, Sevyn would be cordial and make peace for the sake of the mission. The mature thing to do. But of course, he would have to go and find said p—oh? Head craned towards the source of a voice, green eyes locked in on another player. Positioned happily against a large rock and waving him over. Raising his own hand, Sevyn waved and began making his way over to the other. "Hey there."
Finally having made it to the boulder, Sevyn placed his hands within the safety and mystery of his cloak. Checking the other up and down before deducing that this individual seemed capable enough to be his partner for the time being. And well, who knows, maybe the synergy between the two would be above average? It couldn't hurt to finally use the 'add friend' feature finally. "Here for the quest, I assume?" A small breeze appeared after his rather rhetorical question.
"Shall we get going?" His back turned and small paces were made towards... Well, the mountain in the distance. "I'm Sevyn, by the way." Introductions were in order, right? Teamwork would more likely than not be the missing piece of the puzzle to acquire the goods. [attr="class","whistlenotes"] ▇ ARETO

Areto hadn't expected to fall asleep while waiting for his new partner.
To be honest, he hadn't expected to be able to fall asleep in game at all. The rock wasn't very comfortable but he had the ability to fall asleep anywhere if need be. It wasn't a good ability but it did help out in a pinch especially while he was stuck at work or in class. While wiping the sleep away from his eyes, he blearily looked at the person standing in front of him. Were they a girl or a boy, he wondered.
At a glance, he would've said a girl with the soft facial features and short hair.
The mysterious cloak and way of speech did throw him off a little though in that regard. Nonetheless, boy or girl, this person seemed interesting enough. Once he was fully awaake and perched happily on the rock, he gave the other his full attention, only to find that they were already walking away. Areto hurriedly climbed off the rock and walked after the stranger who called themselves Sevyn. Well, that was a peculiar name. Why after a number unless it was supposed to be like Sven.
Should he call them "Sven" or "Sevyn".
"Well, I'm Areto, it's nice to meet you.. Vyn!"
A nickname would be a good idea for right now. Until he could fully wake up and commit to the idea of asking what the other's name was pronounced like. Crossing his arms behind his head, he stared at the mountain in the distance and let out a low whistle.
"So when did you first log into beta?"

| [attr="class","whistle"]Areto..? "Pleasure to meet you." Interesting. Sevyn couldn't help but wonder the reasons for coining such a moniker. But then again, the same could be said for him and his own name. Although, he had some sort of reasoning for it. As he assumed everyone did, to some degree. He paused his strolling to allow Areto catch up, smirking before turning his head onward an continuing the travel to the mountain in question. Brows perking upward as he was shot an inquiry. "I logged o--" Vyn? He chuckled, nicknames already? What a friendly individual.
"I logged on yesterday, but really didn't do much. Today is my first actual time doing anything." He shrugged, "I figured taking on a mission would be helpful to the beta test. Rather than just lazing about the town and collecting numbers on my friend list." His arms folded against his chest and he marched on, looking back to his companion as he spoke once again. "How about you?"
Maybe this person had already found the inner workings of the game and coined himself some shortcuts? That would surely make this quest much more easier. Seemed as though they were well prepared all the same though. A shield on their person and all, playing it safe by having extra defense. Clever. Duly noted. Clever people were definitely worth keeping around. This was turning out better than he had expected.

Areto wasn't quite sure what to think of the sword that he was using. It was a simple one that he bought from the shop, not too bad, but a lot better than the shoddy one from before. The craftsmanship could use some work but he wasn't quite sure how he knew that besides the armor crafting license that he had gotten. But anyone with an eye could tell that the beginning weapons wouldn't really get you far. For one, they were rather eaten away at the edges as if rusted and the only thing that you could really do was hack away until the blade broke. Wouldn't that be tragic during a fight?
The new sword that he had was pretty simple. No markings or aesthetics to the blade and all. Just right for a novice who was going out on their first hunting mission. Once he caught up to Sevyn, he could've sworn that the other smirked at him. Did he say something funny or maybe he was laughing at him and not with him? Either way, it was good that he wasn't taking this too seriously. It was just a game after all.
Areto crossed his arms behind his head and hummed while the other talked. Wondering when he'd be able to get his shield.
He had the skill for it but not the amount of CON needed to wield one.
It would be much harder to defend without a shield and his dexterity wasn't high enough to warrant rolling out of the way very often. Glancing over at the other, he smiled wryly.
"Well, besides this quest, I haven't been on any others yet. It's mostly been because I've been trying to run around and make friends," he said. "Or y'know, collect numbers on my friends list."
Areto laughed wholeheartedly and shrugged.
"But hey, if this game is realistic as it seems, the monsters must be terrifying."
He touched his chin and stared upwards.
"We're climbing a mountain so there is bound to be something, right?" He asked. "Is there anything in the user manual?"

| [attr="class","whistle"]"Ah, I see." So Areto was more or less in the same situation as Sevyn had found himself in. This was his first quest as well and that meant that whatever monster the pair were greeted by, if they were in the right place at the right time that is, would be a first for the both of them. He couldn't help but wonder how tough the thing would be. Or what it would look like, for that matter. "Hm, you might be on to something." What if the creators went out of their way to make these beasts as fearsome as possible?
"Thankfully, I don't scare too easy." Or so he would like to have believed. God forbid he talked himself up to be scared pants-less by a monster once they grew nearer the mountain. Which, speaking of, seemed to be growing closer in proximity the more they walked. "I uh, I didn't actually." That would have been helpful. "I was more so excited to just explore on my own. Diving in head first may have been a risky move." A hand moved from his cloak to scratch the back of his head. A bashful chuckle ensuing afterwards.
Then it dawned on him. "Oh, well that stuff about collecting numbers earlier. It's fine if that's your prerogative." A light shrug followed. "I personally don't see the need in having too many people around. It sets yourself up for a larger failure." A scar left from his life outside of the game. Circle were meant to be kept small. It protected one from being betrayed. Or so Sevyn rationalized.
"But, you seem quite friendly. I'm sure you won't have that problem." His head raised to look at the mountain. "You don't have that, aura, about you." [attr="class","whistlenotes"] ▇ ARETO

He wasn't very confident in his abilities to fight against monsters that were on equal footing with him. Though, that would only prove to be a hindrance when faced with monsters that would be at a higher level than him as well. But there wasn't any sense in being afraid of something that he wouldn't be able to control. If his abilities were lacking then he'd just have to get stronger and conquer that fear until they weren't lacking anymore. Improvement, was key when taking your time with something. However, Areto did take pride in being a judge of character and from the way that Sevyn spoke — he was either faking conviction or trying to believe in it.
Either way, it was admirable.
Areto stepped closer to nudge the other against his ribs and give a light-hearted smile.
"Sometimes being risky is the best way to do things," he said. "Making new friends or even experiencing new things requires some type of 'bravery'."
Stuffing one of his hands in the pockets of his pants, he hummed a tune and glanced upwards towards the sky. It wasn't totally true that he logged in by himself. He had a few friends that came along as well but where they were, he wouldn't know. Areto came to the conclusion that not everyone who entered beta would want to make nice with the other testers but it wouldn't be a good idea to be all by yourself. That would just hinder your experience.
"If you want, we can be friends," Areto offered. "Once we get through this mission, and when we succeed, we can add each other to our friends list and if by some tragedy we fail — you can hit me ontop of the head as much as you want."
The mountain was steadily growing closer and it was much taller than it had been when it was only a figure in the distance.
"Deal?"

| [attr="class","whistle"]"I suppose you're right." Sevyn spoke out after having jumped from the nudge at his ribs. Huh, it seemed as though he was just a ticklish in game as he was in real life. That was... strange yet intriguing. The creators must have really but every fiber of their being into the development to allow such sensations. "I don't know about it being risky per-se. I do think putting fear aside would be the best bet. In this case, at least." In regards to making friends... being wary of strangers and their true intentions was a must for Sevyn. In the case of willingly teaming up with Areto however, it was much easier than he initially imagined. Maybe he was getting soft..?
Couldn't be.
Foot steps came to a halt as the pair reached the base of the mountain. Sevyn looked skyward and grimaced at the height of the natural structure. It didn't seem this big from far away. Bu then again, this was a mountain after all. "I'm not the friendly type," he started. "I'm used to doing things on my own, it's easier that way." However, at the prospect of having a personal whack-a-mole machine in the case of failure, Sevyn couldn't help but chuckle. "But the whole point of these games are to interact, right? So, I suppose it's a deal." His turned slightly, just enough to expose a smirk on his countenance. "The treasure's close. Let's get going, shall we?"
And not a second left to spare, the white haired male would began walking up the trail. Eyes peering about for signs of obstacles. Or even mountain creatures. Surely, the pair would eventually have to start literally climbing the mountain. He just hoped they wouldn't be affronted by hazards as they ascended higher. Like, a large bird pecking at them, for example. Something cartoon like.
"Everything looks good so far." What a relief, for it as now time to actually climb the mountain. After letting out a deep breath, Sevyn reached out and took hold of a sturdy rock. His other hand grabbing hold of yet another and soon he would begin climbing skyward. A systematic sequence of right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg. Everything seemed to be going well... until there was an odd crumbling sound. "What..?"
No sooner had Sevyn heard the noise had a rock he held onto broke from the mountain and began to plummet downward. Causing Sevyn to lose his balance and too fall backwards. "Eyaaah!!" [attr="class","whistlenotes"] ▇ ARETO

[attr="class","strawberry"] [attr="class","coconut"]HEIGHT OF GLORY There was no definite way to know whether or not the two of them would be friends after this excursion. However, Areto would put his all into making sure that the outcome would at least be a fun one for the both of them. He wasn't equipped with a shield so that would put a damper on things but if he was lucky enough to maintain a positive attitude then it would be able to make up for something at least. The mountain grew closer and he let out a low whistle upon glancing up at it's massive structure. If they were going to climb something like this then the fall would be even worse, he suspected. Seeing as there was a path leading up to the mountain, there had to be a trail somewhere.
Sevyn found it first which made Areto cheer inside though smiling outwardly. At least one of them was using perception rather than just peetering around in the same spot.
"Alright, lead the way," he called. "fearless leader!"
He followed after him and as the two began to climb the mountain, Areto couldn't help but look back and wonder where all of the monsters were. Surely they would have encountered at least one or two by now just to fill up the empty time. If he was a bit naïve, he would've said that there wasn't going to be any monsters, and this mission was going to be easy peasy. But wherever there was grass, there was surely something grazing and he would assume that the grass growing along the dirt trail wasn't just for show.
Once Sevyn began climbing the mountain, Areto moved to follow him, watching as the other scaled it with such precision. Perhaps he was being aided by the game's interface but at the same time would that make it impossible for someone to fall.
As if his question was being answered, one of the rocks came loose and Sevyn was plummeting from his height.
"Vyn!" He yelled.
Hurrying forward catch him, Areto heard the sound of grunting in the background along with a loud squeal.
That couldn't be good.
