"Mm, the sooner we can be rid of these things, the better." The last batch of rats she had enjoyed playing and resting on her shoulders, but they were never as rowdy as the kittens. And her snake, Samson... His idea of a good time was hanging around her wrist, or drifting lazily in his pool. That was what she loved about reptiles; they may not be as easy to care for like a rat, but unlike those social critters, they preferred solitude and did not require much handling. Or daily feeding.
The aching in her scalp eased when the kittens realized they were being returned to their owner. One gave a final tug on Alkaid's hair in excitement, the other wiggling like a trapped snake. The feline slipped through her arm, almost evaded her grasp, and whined when she caught it around the waist. It was lucky to not be dangled by the tail. Less than ten minutes, and she was exhausted already. Not something she'd like to mention or have taken out of context. Or embellish it and say she got tons of tail, including the redhead. But who the hell was she trying to impress, anyway?
"Hmm..."

Comic decided that taking the lead on this part of the journey would be best, and began the trek back to the old cat lady. The thought of the quest repeating - these cats being released for another questing hopeful to take on - was unpleasant. This should have been an average joe fetch quest in any other situation - instead, this was a painful reminder that animals come equipped with claws, and that her arm could soon be as red as the hair upon her head.
"Next time, killing quests. Only killing quests." Sticking her pig sticker in a pig would be the way to go - not this catnapping. Comic turned to say something to Alkaid, shook her head, and decided against it. No need to ask to add someone she didn't know to a friends list or the like. It wasn't like Comic had done anything, either - she was basically a useless plus one, acting as a cat scratching post. Alkaid technically caught this one, not her... nothing like a false victory.

This was the part where they turned in the cats and went their separate ways, though Alkaid was hesitant. Truth be told, she was sorely lacking in friends, and usually went out of her way to avoid other players, unless she was forced to by the game. This wasn't the sort of game one could lazily play with a mouse in one hand, a snack in the other, either. If she couldn't kill even a pig on her own, how was she expected to advance? She'd need help until she got the hang of things, and her temporary partnership with Comic undeniably convenient.
So, with kittens spilling out of her arms, Alkaid raised her fists into a mock fighting pose. "Comic, you look strong." And like a decent meat shield. She hadn't decided if she wanted to tank in this game or not; the lack of magic or heavy artillery was disappointing. "We should go beat up some monsters after this. It'll be a good way to figure out the combat system." She was too prideful to be honest and just say she needed Comic's help. Being a solo could be suffering at times.

The sudden engaging of conversation before finishing up with the quest took her off guard a bit; Comic wasn't the conversationalist, and so this was an awkward situation to be in. So rather than reply immediately, Comic walked in silence for the entire time back to the old lady. Her usual air of indifference and knives-out felt like it had wavered, and she had to figure out how to answer Alkaid. It wasn't like solo questing in this world would be any easier; this was just the beta, too. It wouldn't harm anything to try and make something stick, something work.
So it was only after Comic herself tossed a kitten at the old lady NPC that she shrugged and grunted. "Field's supposed to have mobs and quests." That was about as close to a yes as she was going to get without having to be obvious or overt about it. She would rather avoid having to say that, since it was of her opinion that this chick was just going to show her up again, and this time at fighting - her actual job. A bouncer being shown up wouldn't work out so well.

It was a good thing that cats (especially those of the virtual variety) were sturdy enough to survive light falls. The two mewling critters darted towards the old woman, soon to fall victim to their programming once more. Of course the NPC thought nothing of the revolving door of fetch quest hell. It was...pretty damn depressing, actually; like watching a senile old woman struggle to care for her pets. How long until she needed players to help feed them?
Alkaid lightly shook her head, eyebrows furrowed and a hint of concern in her blue eyes. She'd sooner die than lose her mind. "...mm?" Whatever pity she felt for the NPC and cats vanished at Comic's words. Fields? Oh, right. Where the stupid pigs and other dumb beasties roamed. "Oh, right." It wasn't quite a yes, but more importantly it wasn't a no.
She lightly clapped her hands together. "Excellent! I'm going to need a few minutes to prepare first--" To mentally psych herself up for a huge headache. Maybe even find better gear than her current rags...not that the old broad gave them enough to buy so much as a less shitty shirt.

Some of these NPCs had relatively human behaviors, even as they were trapped in a robotics cycle of following programming and acting only as their goals, acting only to further the players. She had a few words to say - a scripted thank you, from the sounds of it - and then she seemed to just... forget they were there. Quest prompt shoved up into her HUD, to accept the end of it. Rewards time. This was the moment of payout and sweet release.
However, it seemed that they were going to be engaged in more quests later that day. Comic thumbed at her chin, scratching and shifting her weight from one leg to another. It meant having to meet somewhere at an expected time and place, and then not decide to skip or log out. The beta wasn't big enough for her to expect to avoid Alkaid forever, and outside of the need to just be free of duty she had no reason to avoid her. Ugh.
"South gate? I'll be around there today." That was enough to give her something, if she did decided to join up for wholesale bacon slaughter. That aside, she took a step or two out of the way, turning her head back. "See you." She made her way south - at least heading in the proper direction - and made her way to lose some time.

In contrast to Comic's lukewarm reaction, Alkaid was lightly bouncing on her toes in excitement. She was less excited about the thrill of murder hoboing, and more pepped over the preparations. If she could find equally easy quests, it would not be too much of a bother to raise up some funds. It meant suffering through endless fetch quests and listening to the asinine ramblings of computer programs, but she could not afford to make a fool of herself. Not with pigs. Again.
She made a mental note of South gate, and had to assume Comic's "today" translated into noon or a little after. Wait a second... "You better not stand me up, Red," she called to the other's back. She should have sent her a friend request, for the sake of keeping tabs on the ginger. Feeling flustered but hopeful, Alkaid turned on her heel and continued on in the opposite direction.
