Height of Glory. That was the name of the quest she had just accepted. Back in beta, when Eve was just learning the ropes, she had wanted to try the quest out if only to get an extra stat point added and a free item. Unfortunately, her level of confidence hadn't been all that great and she had gone off for more of the easy quests that were around the towns.
Now that she was at the bottom of the mountain, Eve craned her head up to try and see if she could see the top of the mountain. Other people were either passing by her person or loitering around; the woman assumed that they were also there for the quest. Bringing her attention down from the skies, Eve wondered if she should try and pick out a partner.
While she doubted in meeting her character's first death of the official launch, Eve really didn't like "dying." The pain was always realistic (even if dulled) and the experience was terrifying. Making up her mind and trying to gather her courage, Eve yelled out, "W-Would anyone like to join me in the 'Height of Glory' quest?"
Some of the players paused in their conversations to look around at the source of the yell, others glanced at her in question, and a few chose to ignore her. There seemed to be a few people that were interested but hadn't made a move to answer the call.
Should she try again? Eve ran a hand over her face. She really hated yelling, and drawing attention to herself. A light red blush spread over her cheeks when she still felt a few people keeping their gaze on her tall frame.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Finally, this PoS game was out of beta. Alkaid was surprised that she'd been able to tolerate it enough to stick around for the official release. Well, truthfully she just wanted to see if any of the player suggestions were applied or not. There was still no magic in this damn game, so the odds of her playing long term were practically nil. She didn't have much to do either way, so screwing around for a while couldn't hurt. She decided to skip most of the mundane hunting and fetch quests, and opted in to try a simple hiking quest. It involved climbing a mountain to retrieve a solitary flower. There were many players who would scoff at the idea of doing so, but she didn't mind the idea of a leisurely stroll up a virtual mountain. Alk loved to explore, especially in games that had jumping puzzles and the like. But she'd need a partner... Luckily for her, one presented themselves with little trouble. The player in question was an awkward male trying to attract others into joining his quest. So far, none of the others seemed to be impressed. That was all fine and well for her. The least people who came, the quicker they could get this done. One arm shot into the air to wave and catch the male's attention. ”I'm doing that quest, too. Don't have a partner yet, so you'll have to do.” As if she even had a choice. ”Name's Alkaid, by the way.”✏: ---@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

The time that passed might have seemed like nothing for the players around her, but the few seconds where not a single person responded to her offer seemed to go by slowly. Embarrassment and disappointment were beginning to settle. Pins and needles were prickling along her arms to the tips of her fingers. Eve tried to keep a friendly smile on, trying to make eye contact with those who had looked her way.
Unfortunately, they all turned their attention elsewhere when they were caught staring. Her heart was about to sink to the floor. That is until an arm shot out into the air. A familiar face came into view and Eve had to clench her jaw from gaping in surprise.
"I remember you," were the words that tumbled from her mouth. She waved her hand in greeting though her smile still seemed to be forced and awkward. "We did that one quest together back in beta."
Eve still remembered how the woman wasn't all that cordial with her. Well, she was but Alkaid had been a tad bit bossy. Without much thinking, she shot Alkaid a party request.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Alkaid was cut off guard by the man's claim of remembrance. Shit. She honestly didn't remember questing together; there were several players, and a lot of them looked so generically anime to her. The player that stuck out most to her was the surly redhead, Comic. The two of them were tasked with rounding up stray kittens for some old crone. And then there was that one guy she tried to leech off of his hard work. He was...tall. Like this guy. They both sort of had...dark hair. And uh... A touch of red entered her cheeks. ”I did a lot of quests back then. I'm a very busy woman, you know.” How dare he question her memory. ”We did that one quest with the, hm.” It wasn't a fetch quest. She was looking to do some combat, and there were -- the man-eating plants. ”Yeah, we fought nepent snatchers. But killing weeds was whatever, so.”Smooth like vodka. ”I hope you don't winded easily. Alkaid's blasé response made her cringe internally. It shouldn't have been surprising considering the amount of time they hadn't seen each other, and the fact that they only did a quest once. Eve supposed that only she had been affected by their short time together.
Though she was pushing back the inkling of negative emotions, the fact that Alkaid did remember what their quest was about curbed the annoyance building in her.
"Yeah, that one..." She trailed off, once again feeling offended by the "meh" attitude she was given. The subtle poke at her fitness too was grating at her. Clearing her throat, she replied, "I'll be sure to make frequent stop so that you can rest."
Eve flashed a challenging smile and gestured to the many trails they could take with a sweep of her hand, "Shall we go?" Then she began walking.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Alkaid gave a soft "hmph" at the implication that she was out of shape. While she was never a jock, she was somewhat athletic. Swimming was her favorite, with tennis and hiking bringing up the rear. Virtual swimming would be a delight to try, but there would be no hope of stumbling upon tennis courts. ”I have outstanding stamina reserves. A little hike isn't going to tucker me out.”Never one to back down from a challenge (especially in something she enjoyed or excelled at), Alkaid moved to remain abreast of Castiel. She had the whole walking thing down pat so far, and it was only virtual reality, at that. She should not be able to suffer from fatigue or other worldly downfalls. Walking quests, though...these had the potential to get boring fast, if taken with the wrong people. Not that she minded too much, honestly. She liked being able to fall into a comfortable silence, and not having to feel pressured to hold up a conversation. People who felt the need to chatter on incessantly annoyed her to no end. Shame society deemed it necessary for people to be chatter boxes, and not shut up when they had nothing of merit to say. ✏: ---@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

"Good to know," Eve commented just as Alkaid situated herself next to her, enjoying the fact that she didn't have to expend a lot of energy with her long legs. Ah, the perks of being a tall guy. "We should be done in no time then."
Despite what she said the young detective was a bit unnerved that an easy quest would be giving out an extra stat and an item after its completion. There was definitely something attached to the quest. That was just her hunch though.
The path they took was well-worn and winding. At first, it seemed as though they weren't moving "up" the mountain, but rather in a straightforward line. It didn't long, however, for Eve to feel the elevation slowly tilt at a higher angle.
Eve was content in letting silence reign between them. From past experience, however little it may be, Alkaid didn't seem to be the type of girl to talk a lot. Still... "You haven't taken this quest back in beta did you, Alkaid?"
It wasn't necessarily empty conversation, but she had to know what the other girl knew.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Cast was lucky to have an avatar with long legs. Alkaid's was her exact height, for the sake of convenience. Learning how to walk in a virtual reality game was a hassle itself. She didn't want to fumble about like a baby giraffe. Though in hindsight, that may have been the purpose of this quest -- teaching folks to walk. What other reason could there be? It felt strange hiking here and not in the real world. Alkaid could sense the difference and it unnerved her, though not enough to make her lose her cool in front of this dude. Coming across as weak was never her thing. ”I haven't, no,” she said when prompted. ”I didn't really care to, either. My main goal in the beta was to poke around for bugs and get a feel of the combat mechanics.” Hiking up a mountain for flowers was not something she'd do in a game at all, unless she just wanted to relax while listening to music or audio books. ”Would be nice if there was a jumping puzzle, too.” A lot of people found them annoying for some reason, but she loved figuring them out -- the harder the better, in fact. ✏: ---@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

Eve glanced at Alkaid from the corner of her eye, and raised a brow when she also expanded on her reason for playing beta. The other woman was certainly different from herself. For Eve, playing beta was just for fun and to see why this particular game was getting so much hype.
"Fair enough," she said. Nothing but trees and bushes filled her field of vision. Wasn't it too peaceful? They were in the wilderness. Well, then again, they were currently working on a quest so maybe the area or the mountain itself didn't spawn monsters.
It wasn't long for Eve to hear a distinctive crunch of branches and dead leaves. That made the woman pause, trying to figure out where the sound came from. "You heard that right?" She asked, voice quieter than when they were conversing just a second ago.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Most people would have eagerly jumped on the opportunity to talk next; "Yeah, I joined the beta just so I could brag about it, lol." People who did not actually listen, only waited for their turn to speak...a nuisance. She was thankful for Cast choosing to be silent, rather than prattle on about nonsense. Maybe they wouldn't be such a pain in the ass, after all. If he annoyed her in their last quest, she sincerely could not remember, or could not be bothered to care. Hell, it would have made it easier for her recognize him. In either case, it was a very good thing. The odds of her partying up with someone she loathed were slim. The further they moved, the more she felt a dull sense of trepidation. The woman couldn't put her finger on it, but something about this area was...off. There were no monsters at all her -- or none she could see, rather. It seemed unlikely that it would be a safe space of sorts, so why...? ”Ah,” she said, almost in relief. There was something moving clumsily through the foliage, crunching leaves and branches beneath its feet. Cast evidently heard it as well. ”Yeah. It's either a monster or some asshole playing a prank on us.” She placed a hand on her sword, just in case. A girl had to always be prepared in situations like these. ✏: ---@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

Copying Alkaid's movement, Eve's hand slipped to the handle of her sword and her posture slid into a stance in which she could easily react. "Well," she started, eventually drawing out her weapon and holding it out in front of her when the noise started to sound closer and closer. "At least this wouldn't be a boring trip up the mountain."
And how mundane it would have been. Not that Alkaid was necessarily bad company, but Eve was one of those people that felt the need to fill the silence when she was uncomfortable. She could remember having annoyed the dark haired warrior during the first bit of the plant quest. Eve had been somewhat nervous and taken aback by the woman's attitude that she filled the silence with nonsense until it occurred to her that Alkaid did not appreciate the conversation.
It was a few tense seconds before a hulking shape made its way towards them.
"A boar?"
Red eyes bulged out against its black coloring and the monster certainly didn't seem happy about seeing the pair. Hooves pawed at the dirt before it suddenly charged at the duo. Eve easily dodged to the side though found herself losing her footing when she had failed to keep in mind that they were currently at an incline instead of a flat surface path.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Boring? Alkaid did not think so at all of their quest. It was nice and peaceful for her; a time for quiet reflection and appreciation of their surroundings. Cast did not strike her as the sort of guy to prefer a loud, raucous group. Now that she was spending more time with him, she could remember bits and pieces of their first quest together...and it annoyed her. He was the kind of insecure dude who had to fill the "oppressive" silence. She recalled saying something to the effect of "Less is more," which was nicer than just telling him to stick a sock in it. ”Oh!” The soft cry escaped without her intention. Lunging out at them was not another player or a man-eating plant, but a simple boar. Alkaid hated the dumb, smelly things. She'd poked at a few in beta, and was not so eager to face them again. Being chased in a world that mimicked the real, even if only artificially, creeped her the fuck out. So when the boar made a move for her taller party member, Alkaid was glad. She unsheathed her sword and held it out in front of her, ready to stick the pig if it decided to attack her instead. Oh, maybe she should hit it while it was distracted! Brilliant idea. She waved at Cast, then the boar, and finally herself. Oh boy, sword arts. How did those work again...? You let your body...ease into it...or however that went. Like, pow. Her sword almost flew out of her hand, but she managed to execute the Slant sword art. It was a very weird feeling, allowing your body to almost go into auto-pilot with SAs. But yeah-- she showed that little oinker! A whopping 15 dmg. She was the best. She would become the boar queen, she would-- This time her sword really did slip from her fingers, but Alkaid caught it just in the time. The boar. The boar looked...w-was that steam coming out of its flared nostrils? And why was it glaring at her? She so wanted to run and leave Cas behind to finish the quest, but if boars were anything like dogs, then the last thing she wanted to do was cause it to chase her. Should she give it a horizontal whap on the nose? Would she even be able to? ✏: Boar: 85/100@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

Thank goodness that her legs were long and that her reflexes compensated enough to not twist on her ankle and subsequently go tumbling down the trail. Instead, Eve's back leg was stretched out - not painfully - while she managed to shift her weight forward onto her front leg.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Eve almost missed the signs that Alkaid was waving to her. She didn't exactly get what what her partner wanted to do, but the woman figured that she'll try and back up the girl whenever possible. Pushing off her leg muscles Eve climbed up the incline in two strides while Alkaid executed a Sword Art.
"Switch!" Eve cried out, seeing that the boar had changed its target. Her rusty sword began to glow just as her tall frame positioned itself behind the boar. Hoping to get the monster's attention again, Eve charged and released her empowered attack - a slant against the rump of the boar.
It squealed in pain. The boar's HP dropped down by 11 points while she jumped back a safe distance away. She could have stayed a while longer and done a bit more damage, but Eve wanted to make sure which person the boar was targeting next.

[attr="class","Mute"] Die reinste Freude ist die Schadenfreude [attr="class","capsule"] Luckily for Alkaid, she wasn't going to be run down by the boar immediately. Cas had recovered his footing, and was now calling for her to switch -- ugh, she hated that move. Switching was designed to "teleport" one player away from a monster, and swap in an ally. It was supposed to allow them to take turns in recovering, or something. She liked to think that tanks could use it to take the blow meant for their squishier team mate. Alkaid winced at the man's somewhat lower damage output. Something told her he either didn't put much in strength or seriously need to upgrade his gear...though to be fair, they were still level one. Alkaid was the sort to cover all her bases, however. When Cas jumped back, Alk moved in. The boar, still squealing at pain in indignation because of its hurt bottom, was turning towards the source. The monster AI was so simple to figure out, but if she kept poking at it, it would eventually learn she was the bigger threat. Her Horizontal skill caught it across the snout and along a portion of its body. The boar grumbled in anger, shuffling away from the man to aim for her. Kind of a stupid move, really; leaving itself exposed for Cas like that. Alkaid slashed at it with her blade two more times, basic attacks to further goad it along. ✏: Boar: 49/100@: Castiel 瑤光 [newclass=.capsule]padding-top:10px;padding-left:10px;padding-right:10px;font-size:11px;color:#2b2b2b;font-family:calibri;text-align:justify;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute]font-family:'Iceland';font-style:normal;font-size:20px;font-weight:400;color:#1da074;text-align:center;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass] [newclass=.Mute:hover]color: #ff5502;-webkit-transition: all .5s linear;-moz-transition: all .5s linear;-ms-transition: all .5s linear;-o-transition: all .5s linear;transition: all .5s linear;[/newclass]

The moment Alkaid had finished dealing damage to the boar, Eve was fast to move back in. She slashed a couple of times at the pig, though it didn't seem to pay her any mind. It appeared to have directed its aggro solely on the smaller player. Charging up her sword art once more, Eve made for an uppercut type of attack.
"Over here, Pig!" Even though the woman knew that the monster didn't understand her taunting and had a very simple AI, Eve couldn't help but say such things. Perhaps it was one of those spur of the moment deals?
Either way she was definitely getting back into the swing of things. Her virtual body was exhibiting signs of an adrenaline rush, especially when the HP gauge for the boar dropped considerably. About the same as Alkaid's damage output. Eve grinned, feeling proud of herself.
