A soft tune escaped Diz's lips as he walked through the streets watching the sky change from blue to orange. Streaks of gold dancing amongst the clouds reminding him of distant memories that seemed so close that he could touch them. The game continued on and he couldn't help but find himself swept into it. Spending mornings running quests, afternoons looking for simple ones that he could do before turning in for the night. He'd have to meet up with Souta at some point but couldn't bring himself to see the other without a better face. Diz's thoughts had been slipping away from him into dangerous territory and he knew that it wasn't good for him. He practiced breathing techniques. Meditation. Forgiving and forgetting but it seemed so much harder when justice was right in front of him. But is that really justice? There were moments that he cursed his good nature and wholesome thoughts. Of course it was justice. But the seed of doubt proved him wrong. Nonetheless, he came to the location as it was written in the manual supplied by beta testers. A NPC should be around here somewhere. " Um.." He looked up and then turned around to notice a young girl with tears in her eyes. This must be the NPC, he thought to himself. Kneeling down and talking to her eye to eye, the quest was launched and a beacon shot into the sky alerting other players nearby. This may be good for me, I can't even seem to trust my own thoughts.

"Should we wait for more, or should we go?"The voice was abrupt, plain, and direct. It spoke frankly and without excess baggage. Emotions were baggage. It was offensive to clutter up the air with more emotion than necessary; to press upon others some feeling or mood they did not innately have was to commit an err. Like staging a NPC to cry. To use a child with big round eyes and quaint features to tickle feelings of remorse or pity or sympathy - something about it bothered her. It reminded her of Artemis, of how Artemis had been so... empathetic towards fake people. It was bothersome that someone of good heart could be fooled into kindness that would never be returned in kind. Or perhaps the bothersome part was the fact those of good heart never needed their kindness returned to begin with. Eh. It was best not to think about it. It was best to get a move on. She didn't want to fall behind… Looking at the other player expectantly, Cross tilted her head just the slightest amount and rose her brows. 'Well?' Her expression asked.

Diz was lost in thought as he mulled over the potential dangers that could come with his actions. Only then did a voice call out to him causing him to look up in mild surprise. It wasn't everyday that someone snuck up on him even in a crowded place like this. Standing to his feet, he looked the young woman over and found that she was rather rigid in appearance and void. He wasn't sure whether or not to say the last part but by the way that she seemed to be standing and behaving. He would say that it wasn't the best idea that he had all day. The samurai looked around to see if any other players were coming forward to join before opening his menu and sending an invite her way. «DIZ» would like to invite you to a party.
ACCEPT or DECLINE
" Did you have anyone that you wanted to bring along with you?" He was hit with the slight idea that she possibly didn't. And even if she did, she would have gone with them instead of standing here with him. Waiting for an answer, he nodded his head and waved to the NPC before walking in the general direction of the river. He heard stories about it and scoped out the city during his free time or when his mind was so restless that he couldn't sleep. His movements were slower. His head feeling lighter than usual though possibly because he hadn't eaten. cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Accepting the invitation in one gesture, Cross would pull up her friends list with another. Prompted by his offer her fingertips would hover over an impulsive selection. They were still online, and she didn't think they would be opposed, but... She had told them next time she would help them, not rope them into helping her again. Not that this was a 'helping her' situation anyway. Eyeballing this 'Diz' she had to admit that quests seemed to reward the collective over the independent. If she could go alone, she would have, but the reliable benefit of working in a team made that an ineffective method. However, with that said, inviting other players to a quest would require that the current party wait for them... It would be rather presumptuous to make him wait for someone he didn't even know... Wouldn't it? "Hmm. No. It will be quicker with just us. Wouldn't it?" She answered as she followed behind. Reading up on the cliff notes of the quest, Cross couldn't help but eventually ask, "What do you think the picture inside of the locket is of?"

The silence that stretched on didn't bother him but it was the exact opposite of what he wanted. Diz was privvy to his own thoughts and knew that they were more violent than he intended. Many of the ideas that resonated in his mind were centered around negativity. He remembered the moments after his unconsciousness where all that he could think of was what had happened. The accident. The people he was leaving behind. Whether or not he'd survive. Sword Art Online felt like a paradise. A way for him to wake up from the never-ending nightmare that was his own mind. How could his thoughts be so violent and the nightmares so vivid. His partner's voice woke him from his stupor and he glanced back at her. She was asking about the locket. Hm. " A picture of her family," he said definitively. " Often lockets are shaped like hearts and one of the closest things to the heart is family." Well, that proved true for some people. He slowed his pace so that he could walk beside her and offered a little smile. " I don't mind if you don't want to talk to me but I'd rather not avoid you the entire mission." With an incline of his head, he smiled a bit broader. " If you had a locket, what would you put inside?" cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Avoid me?She blinked, one part surprised and the other part... She didn't mean… Ah. It was neither here nor there. Excuses weren't helpful, or useful, or worthwhile. What mattered was... change, right? And learning. And doing better. His grinning sought reciprocity and in return she attempted to offer a little warmth of her own. She smiled slightly back, and while it didn't crinkle her eyes or seem terribly natural, it was the effort that mattered, right? He wasn't like Goryo, who she could walk with in content silence, or Artemis, whose awkward way of chatting along didn't bother Cross at all. He was... Diz. And there was something strangely profane about asking a stranger about a locket that piqued her interest. What sort of person asked something like that? Better yet, what sort of person answered her own inquiry with so much conviction? Someone like herself would have said the NPC's locket probably contained nothing. It was, after all, an NPC. It didn't have a family or memories... It couldn't. He answered differently and she couldn't help but wonder if it wasn't a reflection of who he was consequently. Maybe in his locket he would have his family. A happy family no doubt, loving and nurturing and kindly. They would have large smiles and plump faces and warm eyes... Taking a moment to ponder it thoughtfully, she felt guilty when all she came up with was, "But lockets are so small..."She couldn't say she would stow portraits of her family in a locket, or friends, or that she had something or someone she felt worthy of entering a little medallion about her neck. Those she cared for - those she deemed her friends - she remembered without a locket. "Maybe…" Maybe she could put her worries and mistakes in a locket. Maybe it could be a metaphorical Pandora's Box where someone stowed all the unhappiness in their heart. And maybe, if that was true, losing a locket really wouldn't be that bad... Maybe. "Mmm. I don't know." she admitted while realizing that he (likely) would be unhappy if she left the conversation there. "Do you play with your family?"

Diz silently hoped that he wasn't being intrusive. It wasn't that he was overtly curious about her family or why she seemed so quiet. He was just wanting to talk to someone. Chase away the figments of his imagination and replace it with something that was wholesome and warm. It was a pipe dream but a nice one at that. Something that he could look forward to if not enjoy. Perhaps that is how a locket felt for another person. The pictures inside being moments captured that would never return but were remembered with such fondness that it never mattered in the beginning after all. Her answer was met with a soft smile of understanding. Diz didn't mind. The question was a little odd after all but her next statement caught his attention and brought him back to reality. " I used to," he said. " When I was younger, my family tended to give me attention rather than material gifts." It was one of the few things that he was thankful for in life. Being raised to love rather than want. Need rather than desire. " What would make you want to ask about my family?" The talk of the locket. " Was it about what I said before?" cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

"Rather…" She began as her voice trailed off. 'So they give you material gifts instead of attention now?' She would have said and she was thankful that she didn't. It was too personal and would come off too... nosy. It implied too much and she was certain his family remained as happy and as pleasant as Zoya had initially imagined. She was just being a wordage pest, someone who took phrases and sentences and comments and picked at them. It was a bad habit that stemmed from being trilingual. People very rarely were a grammatically correct on conversation as the textbooks made one believe. Instead of continuing down that rabbit hole, Cross turned over to a new line of thought. "Yes," she admitted with a nod. A pause followed before she remembered that more was better for Diz, "Only someone with a nice family would say what you did, and someone with a nice family would do things with them..." It made sense. Who didn't like nice people, especially if they were ones family, and who didn't do stuff with people they liked? Hell, her family wasn't particularly nice but she still liked them and… "Oh. Are you able to logout, Diz?" chatting and walking had seemingly put them outside of the town. Finding the creek shouldn't be difficult, but glancing at the time she remembered... Her brother and niece would be back soon. Or maybe 'back' was the wrong word... "It's weird that sort of bug is still around at launch… Do you think the beta testers missed it?"

Diz could distantly remember the faces of his family members. Their faces were blurry, hands holding his own, watching as he slipped into unconsciousness. How long had it been since he held their hands or talked to them without there being a barrier between them. A mistiness felll over Diz's eyes and he tried to push the thoughts away somewhere that they couldn't bother him at least not that much. The samurai turned his attention to the young woman next to him and he mustered a bit of laughter. " If I was able to log out, I'd be the envy of the entire world," he said. " But no I can't." He wondered if he'd even like to log out. It was an interesting thought at one point but he was in the game for a reason. Souta. Souta was his reason and the young boy would continue to be until another was found. Although Diz wasn't happy to share a sky with him, it was inevitable. He knew that the lowest of the low had to survive somewhere. " I think that I hear water over here." He pointed to the right and motioned for Cross to follow, rolling up the sleeves of his armor. It wouldn't do if he got wet. " I don't think that this is a bug and the beta testers seemed just as surprised as us." cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

If she looked baffled at his laughing it was only because she was. Was he laughing at her...? No, it didn't seem to be the case. He was laughing at something else and as much as she would wrack her brain to figure out why, she couldn't. Had she said a word wrong? Had the subject been funny to begin with? No, no... she was very certain neither was the case. Then, why? It was a strange instict that bid her not to ask. She didn't know why, but she felt... apphrension in the pit of her belly at the prospect of knowing. It was the sort of uneasiness that always festered when someone stood at a cliff, desperately wanting to see over the edge but still petrified by their own mortality. Doing what she did for a living, she loved that feeling. It felt... real, tangible, honest, in a world that she had found to be everything but. Besides, she was certain it was nothing. It was just mental. It wasn't like Diz was a digimon or a ghost or something like that. He was a person. "Why would you say that?" She asked, her eyes coasting over to the creek. While she registered the motion to follow she was hesitant. Instead of trudging into the creek, she bent her knees and crouched on the bank, peering into the water and seeking a 'shiny something' amongst the glint of the shallow-enough water. "And why would the administrators do it on purpose?" She added, glancing up from her dry search to look at him. She had never thought it could be anything but a glitch... but if it wasn't, then it was done on purpose, and if it was done on purpose... Well. That just seemed ridiculous. Why would any company remove the logout option? It seemed easier to believe it was a bug, so how did he come up with a different theory? Cross squinted her eyes. Did he know something she didn't?

Diz waded in the creek and began sifting through the soil for anything that was shiny. He wasn't sure if he'd find it quickly but it would be nice to cover just a bit of ground before searching elsewhere. While Cross searched at the bank, he busied himself with pushing things aside. Small fish brushed against his heels and he barely registered the feeling until looking down. It seemed as though the feeling of legs didn't transfer over into the game at all. It didn't bother him but it was a shame. At least he was able to use the rest of his body. One of his hands seemed to fidget and he held it with the other while standing up. Best to have a slight break. Her question brought his attention back to the conversation. " This game is supposed to be a safe haven," he said. " A new place for people to interact. Another frontier, in a way, not a prison." If it was a prison then he was sentenced to his own penitentiary. " Earlier, when I laughed.." He knelt down to sift through the waters again. " It wasn't at you. I laughed because even if I wanted to log out, I wouldn't." cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

What he said seemed idealistic. A safe haven for interaction... the idea was pretty, but the reality differed for someone who believed that a game was a game. Interaction, safety, camaraderie - the administrators did not feed their families on warm fuzzy feelings. They cared about money, wealth, and profit, and it would always be easier to foster the aforementioned with a self-sustaining population born from a mass of peers. It was a capitalist society that governed the world... even if people had good intentions and good ideals, if they didn't gain benefit from it, then... "It is very strange that we turn to virtual reality to find those things." She commented idly, referencing what he suggested SAO was meant to be. If the world's populace truly wanted a safe haven, a place to interact without barrier or inhibition, then... wouldn't that society make the world into that reality, instead of using a fake world to conjure it up? … But a prison...? Cross had not considered the possibility of the logout function being permanently removed. Surely there was a way to forcefully logout... Right? How pointless. Almost as pointless as wanting to do something, but not doing that 'something' if one could. How was that possible? Didn't wanting to do something imply that one would do that something, should they be able to? "Do you like virtual reality more than real life?" … But he had a good family. Why would he want to stay here? Pursing her lips Cross eyed what seemed to be a fairly shiny golden object in the depths of the creek. Strangely enough she choose to remain quiet about the potential find.

Diz almost smiled. She really was perceptive. It almost reminded him of Souta though he'd probably be chided again for calling him by his actual name. Virtual Reality was a danger in itself. Especially Sword Art Online where the lines between reality and virtual were only blurred by the feeling of data. He stood up to full height and looked at her with a little smile. " In the real world, I'm in a medically-induced coma," he said. " I've been asleep for who knows how long." He shrugged as if asked a question that he didn't know the answer to. " It doesn't bother me, but this is the first time in a while that I've talked to an actual person." His nightmares didn't count. The person that he saw there, the dreams that he had, it didn't move him at all. The things that he did to him in those dreams, if it matched his true feelings, perhaps it was better that Arata was out of his reach. He knew with time he'd forgive him but it wasn't now. A glinting object caught his eye but he passed it off as another rock and went to search elsewhere. cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Her eyes flickered downward, her quiet features shifting into a look of subtle discomfort. Instinctively she thought to apologize. She hadn't meant to be discourteous, and suddenly, abruptly, she felt that she had been exactly that. She hadn't meant to be insensitive... But apologizing seemed wrong, too. ... Maybe he was lying, anyway. A person couldn't believe everything they were told online. Words ought to be taken with pinches of salt, and little stock ought to be put into other players. Lying was easy. There were very few consequences for lying in a game. The anonymity was a safety net for the truth and for the fabrications people spewed... But what sort of person would lie about what he suggested? Why would they? Did he expect pity? ... No, it didn't look like he expected pity... Ah, that would make apologizing seem even worse, wouldn't it? Cross lapsed into thoughtful silence that, much to her chagrin, often was what led others into thinking she was cold, or aloof, or difficult to know. She seemed so disjointed and abrasive when bouts of introspection made her stew and muse. "How can it not bother you?" she asked at last. She didn't believe him. After moments of awkward silence, she could not help but declare that... he wasn't being honest. How could he not be bothered by how long he had been asleep? How could he not be bothered about the separation of his mind and body and all those he had been forced to leave behind? How could he say such fond things about family and be so hopeful about what SAO could be... if he did not care, or miss the real world? And if he cared, or missed them and it, then how could he not be bothered? Why on earth was he smiling, anyway? … Was he just... use to it? 'The first time in a while that I've talked to an actual person...''That must be so lonely,' she thought, frowning deeply. She couldn't fathom it. If it was true... then... How did he enter SAO? Was it an experiment? And if it was, and if they saw results... then... why didn't his family join him here, in SAO, to see him?

Diz halted in his movements. He wasn't sure what to say or if he should say anything at all. There were a million words or phrases that were bounding about in his mind but they all came back to the same thing. He could tell her the truth but whether or not she would believe him was up to her. He could lie and just shrug it off. Play the victim. Anything. But it wasn't him. He couldn't change the situation and even if he was out of the game, whether or not he would wake up in the real world was up to his body. His mind was in the NerveGear, so his body was on its own as it always had been. " I'm used to it." He stared down at his hands, opening and closing them methodically. " To me, this game isn't a prison, it is just another stage. A way for me to feel as if I'm awake again. I was trapped in my mind for who knows how long, living nightmares over and over again, hallucinating that I was awake but I wasn't." He shut his fists and looked at her over his shoulder, turning to face her. " You don't have to believe me. I wouldn't hold it against you but," he smiled. " I don't have a reason to lie." His body and mind had been separated for awhile now. He saw and felt things that he never knew that he was capable of. Diz was his reality and Oda Toshirō was sleeping until the two could come back together. The shiny object caught his eye again and he waded over, kneeling into the water to excavate it from where it was. " Do you know the old saying?" He looked up. " The people who smile the most are crying the hardest?" cross[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]
