[attr="class","cmon"] [attr="class","cmonbox"] [attr="class","cmonlyrics"] Depart this world on a silver bullet I never believed I would ever pull it Now's the time, here's my show Ready to go I'm ready to blow [attr="class","cmonbody"]Alkaid was frankly of the opinion that the sooner one got into crafting, the better their opportunity to make a name for themselves. Once the dedicated crafters got big and famous, finding work would be difficult. But if you didn't know what you were doing either, failure was bound to follow. She was never too big on crafting, herself. If anything, gathering swayed her more, as she could make a profit by selling stacks of mats at cheap prices. If she had to craft, it was either because her guild mates would not suffice, or the prices in the market too damn high.
The story behind the username was one she could almost do without, though it was her idea to inquire. It was a little to personal for her tastes, like the types of files she found at work on a daily basis. That, and she had not expected such a dramatic story. Being shot at it by a mugger or the like wasn't as traumatic, but this...
Inside her lap, Alkaid's fingers locked and released each other. What should she say? What should she do? This woman just emptied her entire purse onto the table, and Alkaid wasn't prepared in the slightest. "That's deep," she finally said after a brief, awkward silence. "Meanwhile, I'm only here because I'm a gamer and most of my other hobbies are solitary. An old therapist once told me that multiplayer games would help me socialize."
She never really bought that. In all her years of playing MMO's, the only friends she gained were superficial ones. It used to pain her to see and hear about others grouping up with their besties or close knit friend groups. The sharpest pain came from being on the fringe of groups like these. She was ever the outlier, never the close confidant. Eventually she grew accustomed to the loneliness; it was all she'd ever known, truthfully.
"I named myself Alkaid, after one of my favorite stars. And because my given name means "lucky," that makes me a "lucky star"." Her voice trailed off, a hint of pink rising into her cheeks. It was an old handle, one she pieced together after becoming entranced by a Madonna video. "Like the song, you know?" That was a song she used to sing to herself or play when she needed some reassurance. It was a childish notion, but helped to build confidence within.

bullet felt a pang of guilt in her stomach. should she have really said all of that just now? even though she asked her about it, it wasn't like she was talking to a trained psychologist, the brunette could have been a lot more vague and implicative to avoid putting the woman into such a strange position. usually, she was a lot more guarded, but in her current state of mind she just felt vulnerable more than anything. maybe it was feeling so vulnerable that made her want to put on so much armour and barricade herself behind a tough shield. "your therapist sounds like someone i'd look up to. it's not an orthodox or by the book solution, and sometimes that's precisely why something ends up being lucrative down the road." she smiled slightly through the evident inner anguish she was feeling. "i'll have to keep it in mind, in the scenario of us getting out of here."
having studied psychology in the past, she wondered if the therapist she was talking about was a senior of hers at some point in her life, but the thought was fleeting. she was brought out of her thoughts by the woman's voice, whose in-game name was revealed to be alkaid. named after a star, and with the subsequent homage to her given name, she couldn't help but remark, "and that's downright beautiful," speaking in retrospect to alkaid declaring her own name deep. it may not have boasted an appallingly tragic story behind it, but she couldn't help but be endeared by something so poetic.
"i know the song. good taste, too. wouldn't it be nice to have some kind of mp3 player in this game to listen to music?" she doubted the plausibility of listening to madonna anytime soon, and maybe that was one of the factors that made her hopeful to get out there. her life wasn't too great right now, but she was already missing some aspects of it. she thought she may have seen a touch of pink in alkaid's cheeks, something she hadn't necessarily expected to see. it did have the added benefit of taking her mind off of her current atrocious situation.
"i've been pondering on what to do from here on out, whether or not i'm supposed to go and start swinging at monsters, if i should find some place to sleep if this game mandates it, if i should be attempting to find some kind of armour and weapons, it's all a lot to take in," especially for somebody who hadn't done it before. she brushed her hair through her auburn bangs and bore her gaze downward broodingly. "it's a whole new feeling of powerlessness."

That "old" therapist was a lot tamer than her current...er, former? Obviously, she wasn't going to be seeing her current for a good while. She remembered very little of the other, however. Their last session was back in Germany, when Alkaid was around twelve years old. They'd made significant process, turning the reclusive wallflower into a child who could adequately make eye contact with her peers. Before, she was too intimidated by humanity to look above their chins or shoulders.
"Yeah, I guess she's pretty cool," a comment actually meant for her latest. Tamboli could almost be considered a friend, were it not for their respective roles as client and doctor. They were both outsiders, in a way; the Chinese German-American and the dark skinned Indian. Alkaid used to call or text her whenever she felt the weight of the world bearing down on her shoulders. The older woman often joked about charging extra for these brief moments of communication, though never followed through. "I'm going to miss her."
Talk about a mood killer, but she certainly wasn't the first offender. Bullet remedied that with a compliment, which despite not being a complete mood fixer, bolstered some good feeling within her. Alkaid smiled shyly, shoulders pulled back some in pride. There were several articles she was fond of, including cardigans, sailor fuku, and knee high boots, but compliments were among her top favorite to wear.
"I know what you mean, though. I'd kill for a music player, but we're even blocked off from exploring the 'net." Of course they were; Kayaba couldn't have them keeping tabs on the outside world. That was a privilege most prisoners were given.
Alkaid took a cautious sip of her drink, found it tolerable, and took a larger drought. "In your usual MMO," she licked at the corners of her lips. "You'd follow the quest line until you're able to roam freely. Here, I would recommend growing accustomed to the quest system and world by indulging the fetch quests and the like." Fetch quests left a bad taste in her mouth, but they were a necessary evil. "Then once you're comfortable, you can go out and do some grinding or exploring." There was really no rush, either. Let the try hards do most of the heavy lifting.
"Hell, there's even a simple walking quest we can try out when you feel confident to leave town." The catch was that a monster might ambush you, but it was only a boar last time.

"you'll see her again." after having dropped the mood, she felt like it was her responsibility to have it rebound back to normal. for that reason she kept in her subsequent thought, which pertained to the fact that she wished she still had something to hope for, or return to, in the case of her surviving the ordeal. she wondered what she would do if she did get out. would she focus on her schooling and internship, if it was even possible for her to hop back into it? how long would it take to truly clear this game? the fact she wasn't completely off her rockers as a result of all of the trauma was a testament to her mental fortitude.
bullet may not have played too many games, but she did have a computer that she tended to frequent. for studying, for listening to music, for staying connected to some people, it was overall a useful tool to have. even for her, she could only imagine what it was going to be like to have it completely ripped from her. no matter how reliant someone was or wasn't on it, she believed that the internet had a considerable effect on everybody's lives. music was the biggest thing she was going to miss; music was by far one of humanity's greatest creations.
as she watched alkaid, she wondered just how that food tasted. it seemed tolerable enough to continue drinking it, and if anything, it made bullet wonder if it was going to be necessary to eat and drink in the game. naturally, her thoughts were interrupted by the accompanying explanation. doing quests seemed to be the most lucrative way to get started, especially for a beginner such as herself. if she had to guess what a fetch quest was, she assumed it was a quest that mandated the player into fetching something. "so that definitely means we will be interacting with those apparent NPCs, or do other things provide quests? as the antithesis of my profession, i find a person, if you can call it that, completely devoid of a mind to be a bit of an aberration." it clearly creeped her out, but she would get used to it. after all, she couldn't read something if they didn't have a mind—and deciphering a story from digital things was alkaid's forte.
"a walking quest?" bullet was surprised at the simplicity, and felt a faint touch of pink on her own cheeks. additionally, she thought that it sounded like a nice endeavour to take on alongside another person. "i—yes, i certainly think i can at least do that much. it'd be nice to get used to the game itself before i take a shot at something like combat. plus, if you're there, if some monster were to attack me outside of town, i'd feel a lot more confident than if it were only me."

The food was no better than what she perceived prison food to be. Oh, how it would be nice to have actual food again! Would that she could stimulate flavor. Something nice and robust to dazzle her taste buds -- "As far as I know, only NPCs have the power to grant quests. That's the case in most games, though there are times when simply being in an area can prompt you to take one. That includes monsters, too." Sometimes it involved killing other monsters that threatened the quest giver, or helping them in ways that may involve escorting or fetching.
"Mm, a walking quest is pretty much what you'd expect." Relaxing, was what it was. Could also be fun, if done with the right people. "The one I mentioned before has you hiking up a mountain to pluck a flower. It's deceptively easy because you might get attacked by a monster." It was hard not to swell up with pride over her knowledge of the game. "But don't worry -- I've got you covered. It'll be like taking candy from a baby." "Oh Alkaid, it's so scary but I'm glad to have you here," was what Bullet was bound to say once they were out in the field.
Yup.
"But we really should start small. The fetch quests in town are a good way to get your feet wet, so to speak." She said that, but it was more due to her lack of trust in the brunette. The more time they spent together, the more she could see Bullet as a reliable ally. Maybe.

| SO BABY, POUR SOME FAME IN MY GLASS "I see. So, the general consensus is: finish the quests that typically are provided by NPCs." Sobered by the continued discussion, Bullet's deadpan expression was renewed. The concept wasn't hard to grasp. One simply completed tasks for the game's virtual denizens in order to progress further in it. However, when even the smallest folly could lead to permanent death, embarking on a quest wasn't as lighthearted as people expected it to be coming into the game. Even a simple walking quest could be fatal, as there wasn't a guarantee the player wouldn't be attacked by some kind of predator, be it a monster or a human. Sometimes, she couldn't tell the difference. Alkaid was confident that it would be easier than committing larceny against a toddler, and as the green gamer with no clue what she was doing, she had to take her word for it. The brunette nodded cautiously, intertwining her fingers on the table. "If we do get attacked by a monster, at the very least it would help me learn the basics of combat. I'll end up as easy pickings down the road if I don't get my feet wet in terms of combat as well." Doing easy quests at first was fine, but she would hate to end up fighting something down the road with little to offer in terms of combat experience aside her proficiency in flower picking. "I wanted to ask—do you think you could do it?"There was a slight mood shift with her query. Her gaze became increasingly scrutinizing, but she remained as still as ever. She was every bit as prodding as any other psychologist. "If a player did try to murder you, and it came down to either you or them, would you kill them?" She didn't have the intention of tossing around her trust liberally either. It wasn't that crazy to want to know how homicidal your potential mentor is in an alleged death game, and vice versa. The conversation was flowing smoothly, up to that point. Alkaid's display of bravo died down some as she was forced to walk along a serious train of thought. It was a good question though, one she did not hesitate to answer. "Yes. Yes, I would." There was no trace of indecisiveness in her voice. She sat in silence for the next few moments, eyes locked with Bullet's.
"This isn't the real world or even a game anymore. If you asked me if I would do the same to someone who broke into my house, the answer would be different." She was well within her rights to defend herself, but there was such a thing as excessive force. If she could disable her attacker and call the police, she'd do just that. But if there was no other way… "They'd get taken away, and the odds of me seeing them again, or them hurting anyone else, would be lesser. There's no jail or law enforcement here, however."
Simply put, all they had was themselves.
"Murderers here are more problematic. I don't like the idea of executing every PK I see, but if one makes the mistake of fucking with me, it will be the last action they ever take." It wasn't a threat; it was a promise. How could she trust a killer to not turn on her again if she gave them the chance? "Rules of nature," she said with a shrug.

| SO BABY, POUR SOME FAME IN MY GLASS Bullet listened, and she listened some more. For the entire time, she kept her own eyes locked on Alkaid's. To look into someone's eyes as they spoke, it always helped her determine whether or not they were lying. It was hard to lie while simultaneously displaying seriousness and resolution. Then again, she wouldn't be able to fathom why somebody would lie about something like that; there was a better chance of them lying about the opposite if they truly had any kind of ulterior motive. She couldn't help but be fond of her tone and the look in her eye. "You're very honest, I like that. I know first hand that there are times where talking doesn't help. You have to be quick and decisive, kill them before they kill you." Back in the day, she would have advised against such rash decisions. She used to believe that all life was precious, and should be preserved at all costs. However, since the incident prior to entering the game, her opinion on the matter changed. "Or even worse, something important to you." Maybe if she had followed her gut instinct and returned home with the intent to defend what meant the most to her, she wouldn't be in the state she was in. "I'll be honest, too," Bullet said, eyes still fixed on Alkaid's. "Perhaps down the road, if I do get a grasp on this game, and I do become capable of deciding an aggressor's fate," She paused, not out of hesitation, but to further emphasize her words, "I would cut them down, too. Better to end them than to allow them to lick their wounds and come at you again. I think I would feel an urge to kill every PK I see. They're just pests that bring sadness, nothing more. Culling them does everyone a favour."Although she hid it well, she was upset, and it wasn't because of Alkaid. Hence the shift in mood for the conversation in general. The hatred for murderers was apparent in her eyes, just as much as how much she looked like she wanted to just break down and cry. Yet, her eyes were dry, she kept it tightly sealed within. Bullet tried to change the subject to something a bit more lighthearted. "A-anyway, do you know if we're supposed to sleep in this game, or will we be awake 24/7?" Alkaid coded by electric of gs |

Alkaid had to stop and think about that one. Aside from her small python and possessions, what was worth killing someone over? Probably her desktop; it was an expensive rig she built herself. It also contained an assortment of files (like her thesis), that she would sorely miss. But aside from that, she had...no one. No one to protect, but herself and her snake. "Yeah. I guess?"
She raised an eyebrow at Bullet's plan to weeding out PK's...if you could call it that. "You can do that, if you'd like. I'm personally not keen on the idea. Seems too...chaotic good for me." Or was it lawful good? Whatever. "I'm no warden. I'm only out to protect my own." It made her selfish, yes, but that's always been the case. With few "friends" to call her own, she only had herself and her family to look out for.
The topic change brought some relief before things could get heated. "I don't think we actually need to sleep, since everything is more simulated than reality. It's nice, though, keeping a routine like normal. I'd wager that one wouldn't need to eat, either." She forced herself to do so to maintain some form of normality. "I can't speak for other bodily, nor do I have the opportunity to even try." All in good time, right?

| SO BABY, POUR SOME FAME IN MY GLASS Bullet wanted to say something along the lines of as long as you don't mind, but she caught herself before she could. It wasn't like it was one hundred percent confirmed that they were going to have a student-mentor relationship yet. "So, there's gonna be a lot of slow singing and flower bringing, if your burglar alarm starts ringing." Straight out of Warning by The Notorious B.I.G, a small attempt at a joke to alleviate the tense atmosphere. In spite of the jest, she remained entirely deadpan, albeit her gaze did soften slightly. "I suppose it'd be psychologically taxing to not sleep at all, regardless of if it is mandatory in a physical sense. If this can even be called physical anymore." Raising her hand next to her face, she twirled a lock of brown hair with her forefinger absentmindedly, glancing vacantly off to the side. Her attention shifted back to Alkaid once she gathered her thoughts. "I guess I don't really know what to do right now. I don't have much to do aside from attempt one of these so-called quests. Can't imagine there's much else to do within town." Perhaps she could be corrected if she was wrong, but as she didn't yet boast a craft, there really wasn't much to do. There was a very faint, very slight amount of insecurity in her voice as she articulated her next string of words. "Unless you have something else to do right now, I mean." Her brow crinkled in confusion. "Um..." She didn't like the idea of someone "romantically" breaking into her home, either. "Yeah. It would." She was getting distracted now, rolling her empty bottle between her palms. The conversation was beginning to wind down, leading to the dreaded small talk. "It's pretty boring in town, unless you like taking in the sights and chatting up NPCs. The action's all outside, unfortunately."She stopped fiddling with the bottle long enough to refocus on Bullet. "Normally I'd say I have a busy schedule, but all I have here is time. What are you up for?" Her plans so far for today: deal with the Kayaba shit, force some food into her belly, and find a place to hunker down for the night. Everything else could be dealt with later, such as her goals for this world. "Or we could follow the mass hysteria going on. I heard something about people trying to find a way to log out." Baseless rumors, really, but how else was she going to entertain herself? | SO BABY, POUR SOME FAME IN MY GLASS "A funeral." Mild disappointment was present in the brunette's voice as the verse allegedly went over the woman's head. Beyond that, she didn't care to elaborate further; flowers and slow singing were characteristics of funerals -- implied mourning for any intruder who would dare threaten the sanctity of Alkaid's home. Chatting to something that lacked a true mind of its own sounded like an absolutely dreadful way of passing the time, and not very pragmatic in the course of things, either. Bullet was never one to take in sights or care about scenic views. That could have been because she never had the time to indulge in sight-seeing, it always seemed pointless to her. She would much rather spend her time learning more about the complexities of the human mind. "And outside, therein lies the danger, as well. Eh, no avoiding it."If this were back in reality, she doubted she would have been able to make any time, either. Between studying and getting on hands experience with her field, there wasn't a lot of time to establish relationships with other people. It wasn't likely that, after everything that happened, she would have stepped foot outside of the house anyway. At least now she had an excuse to avoid everything. "Their efforts may end up being fruitless. I can't see why the creator would go through the effort of putting us in here, if it is easy to get out of the bind," she shrugged, and continued. "But it's something to do, and maybe we'll hear some things. I'm down for it." Alkaid coded by electric of gs |

Though for someone who had attended only one funeral in her life, her experience was minimal. Her memory of it was hazy as well, but it was a solemn affair without any singing. Plenty of flowers, though. She wanted to keep one for herself, but mother said they belonged to the dead; to her great grandfather.
But back to the present.
"I don't see the harm in it, really," she said with a shrug. "It gives them false hope for sure, but it's also something to pass the time." Who knows? Maybe there was some merit to these rumors. Maybe it was all a ruse for a massive PK raid on the unsuspecting. Who knows? "Good. I am reluctant to go out on my own, for obvious reasons." Yet here she was, entrusting a stranger so early on in the game.
"If possible, I'd recommend buying a few pieces of gear to buff yourself up, just in case." Her own gear was hardly up to standards, but she had very little col to spend. "There are NPC shops that sell cheap gear, if you need any." Nothing very fashionable, sadly. She wanted a buckler as well, but worried about price ranges for customs...
