Sonic never thought that the day would come where he would sleep and wake up in the world. It was the stuff of fantasies and games, but here he was waking up after sleeping in a bed at the Inn of Beginnings. An inn modeled after either Medieval or Renaissance or Age of Exploration Europe -he was kind of meh with foreigner history unless it pertained to warfare- within a virtual game playing on in the minds of thousands of players with the help of futuristic headgear rigged to kill them if they died in the game.[break][break]
Yeah, what a bright and cheery existence every player in the game led now. And to think, it was only the day after that startling announcement. A large part of him now regretted trying the game out after letting Kimiko talk him into it, but the past was the past and there was nothing he could do but move on forward now. The road was long with the end far from sight, after all.[break][break]
Still, this bright and wonderful experience made him wonder if they served alcoholic drinks in this game and if it would actually work on him. Frankly, he needed a few stiff drinks in him and while he wasn’t about to indulge in the day, maybe he could indulge in his best friend’s favorite deplorable habit just this once later on tonight to lament. A night of merriment and forgetting before they truly had to face reality.[break][break]
With those thoughts in mind, Sonic woke up and equipped his usual clothes -those were so strange to do- then he made his way down from his room at the inn to the main dining area and bar. Knowing that his best friend was probably not awake yet, he didn’t bother looking for her quite yet and instead made a beeline to the bar, where there was an open seat beside a tall foreign-looking redhead.[break][break]
”Hey miss, is this seat taken?” Sonic asked as soon as he got there, tapping the seat right next to her.

There were no rules against day drinking here; Marisa had planted her ass at this bar the moment her internal clock woke her up. She needed it. She needed this. Yesterday she burnt her body out on questing and killing pigs in order to exhaust herself, collapsed in a room at the inn, and then woke up with a craving for something stiff. Her line of work had spoiled her, and now she needed it here.
It was cheap, at least; almost inconsequential compared to the price of equipment and useful healing items. She had some kind of brew in front of her; it had a colloquial name befitting the game, but it tasted like a cheap beer. She had yet to feel any effects of alcohol, which led her to wonder if the game accounted for that or not. It didn't matter. The taste was enough.
She grunted as someone motioned to the seat next to her; shrugged, and nodded her head to indicate it was alright if he took the seat. She then downed the mug in front of her, let it hit the wood with a thud, and sighed.
"This is fucked up."

At the nod, Sonic took it to mean that yes it wasn’t taken and took a seat. Just as he did though, he heard something slam down beside him and he heard the girl talk. Part of him that had been raised with Japanese social mores and a traditional family almost flinched at the casual use of a curse word, but most of him couldn’t find it in him to care. After all, that statement described the situation that everyone was in now perfectly.[break][break]
”Keh. Tell me about it. Wish I could stab that prick right on through with my spear.” He resisted the temptation to slump down on the table and instead raised his hand to beckon the bartender.[break][break]
”Y’got any sake?” He asked as a menu of drinks popped up in his interface. Huh, that wasn’t there before. Handy, though. [break][break]
Sadly, the bartender shook his head and scrolling the list only confirmed it, so he sighed and clicked something else. Maybe he’ll find some decent sake on another level. ”Just get me some beer then.” He watched as the list of alcoholic beverages winked out.[break][break]
After the bartender left to go get his beer, he propped his face on his chin and started to tap on the table idly while waiting. Man, he wanted to get started drinking before she found him here and turned it into a binge contest or something. Though maybe that’d be fun. Maybe.

Comic's lack of social graces wasn't the only thing that might stick out. In a decidedly Japanese server, she was very European looking, with only the traces of homeland heritage in her features that didn't bother standing out. Instead, she nodded slightly at the spear suggestion; a pretty good one, at that. Ramming him through with any sharp end would be too good of a death for Kayaba. She would need something more than that, something like subjecting him to this hell himself.
She let her drink sit at the bar while her bar mate dealt with the man's order, and after a moment he got his drink; a raised hand, and he took the empty container out; a few moments passed and both of them received their brew. Dark, almost golden, and she took a swallow; it had a honeyed taste to it, that stuck to her tongue long after she finished that mouthful.
She turned her head towards the man, trying to get a read on him. "All we can do is go up, hmm? Kick his ass at his own trap."

As Sonic waited for the beer, he glanced over at the person next to him. She seemed tall, female, and most definitely not Japanese -or at least not pure Japanese- with her red hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. Most likely a foreigner. Maybe one of the lucky ones -he nearly snorted at that- who got to play outside of Japan or somehow within Japanese servers during the day of release.[break][break]
However, he couldn’t really judge because his own fair complexion, red eyes and blue hair also made him stand out from the usual Japanese crowd. However, he can and does find it hilarious that they already looked to be the near-complete opposite of each other in coloration as well as in gender. Was this a sign of things to come?[break][break]
Sonic decided to contemplate it over the mug of beer that was just placed in front of him. He brought it to his lips and took a long sip, and he did not grimace at the all-too familiar taste of cheap beer. This they got too correctly. At least he had ordered the darker one, thank the gods.[break][break]
He then paused when the redhead commented and his lips twitched for a moment. ”For now, that looks to be the best thing we can do. Afterwards, who knows? Maybe a lynch mob can hunt the God-wannabe down and make him answer for his crimes.” He suggested, sounding like he was joking but he was perfectly serious about this.[break][break]
Because fuck this shit, he wanted some revenge already and it was only level one. He couldn’t forgive anyone who put that look on Kimiko’s face.

As she made her way through the next drink, she hoped in her heart of hearts that future floors would have much stronger drinks - or at least up the flavor. As it was, she was certain she could piss in the mug and let it sit for a month and still have it taste better than this. A faint twinge in her heart went off as she thought of the barkeep at her job - former job? still her job? hard to tell in these times - and missed the way they knew how to mix a drink. Something sour, to go down easy and remind her she was kicking.
This just reminded her of how the morning tasted like ash and fallout.
A moment of drinking between them and she stared down into the empty mug. "Seems like you've got something at stake, huh?" She held the cup and swirled the drink about in small circles, rocking her wrist about. "Honestly, don't know what to do with myself outside of throw myself at the wolves and bite back."

Normally, Sonic was a man who preferred to savor the taste of the liquor instead of wolfing it down like a man who had been dying of thirst. But these were far from normal circumstances and frankly the last thing he wanted was to savor the disgusting piss-like taste of this cheap dark beer. Still, he didn’t want to get drunk too fast or choke on this shitty beer so he just took a few generous gulps every time he pulled up the cold drink to his lips.[break][break]
Sadly, the shitty cheap beer didn’t have the hit of the nicer ones either, so he was only feeling slightly warm and entirely sober when the woman spoke up again with her observations as well as her own situation.[break][break]
Sonic couldn’t help the dry smile that crossed his lips. ”You mean aside from the life I left behind and the life I have that’s technically in a life-or-death struggle here? You could say that.” He deadpanned. ”I’m not really up to dying or seeing any of my friends die so it’s bite back and hope I tear off that fucking hand it is.” [break][break]
He then glanced over her, eyes thoughtful and filled with concern. ”You don’t have anything to fight for? Not family? Friends? A job? Your life? Or even just pride and honor that you didn’t surrender like a meek, hopeless pup?” He couldn’t help but ask.

He spoke, she drank. The entire time that the blue-haired individual went on, she made her way through another mug, with a steady and practiced hand at such things. This was only the beginning of her morning, of things to come, of things that would be. She watched from the corner of her eye his expression - his dry smile, the way those sharp eyes pierced into the heart of the conversation, the way he spoke of friends and more that he had to fight for. He even had a life to get back, beyond the game.
It was only when he brought it back up to her that she realized she had spilled more than she wanted. Her chest froze up and filled with solid air before venting, and she felt the stiffness in her body, her face, as it all locked up for the briefest of seconds. Then she finished off the drink, eyes closing and opening and back to nothing, back to zero.
"I won't die. Simple as that." She stared down into the cup. Eye contact was off the table, now. "I'm not locked in her with the wolves. The wolves are locked in here with me." For the first time in the conversation, she didn't sound like a girl at the bar trying to drink away the day to forget it. She sounded like something with blades for teeth and death for a tongue, and the way she looked at her cup was like trying to drill right into it.
She meant it.

When that expression froze on the redhead’s face, Sonic knew that he had said something wrong or he had pressed a button that he didn’t mean to push. He stopped himself from asking more concerned questions by bringing the disgusting brew back up to his lips and swallowed the words that threatened to form away along with the beer he was borderline chugging down.[break][break]
As he was drinking, his focus was inevitably pulled back to the redhead when she told him that she wouldn’t die, that the wolves were locked in here with her and not the other way around. The change in tone was evident, as was the new hardness in her tone and her refusal to look at him anyway.[break][break]
Sonic finally lowered the mug from his lips a few moments after she finished, having drank it all. He was quiet for a few moments more, mostly to help the brew settle in his stomach, but also to take a little time to ponder over her words and realize that she never really answered his question.[break][break]
”If your sword is as strong and as solid as your words, you may very well be right.” Sonic raised his mug to signal the barkeep to give him more of the beer. He needed to have more alcohol in his system before dealing with more of this hard facts bull, anyways.[break][break]
The barkeep took his mug before eyeing the redhead, silently asking her if she wanted more as well.
