He loved to see his weapons in action. It was one of the few truths Ruler was certain of, and it filled him with delight to see people succeed. The boy was sure of it: crafting had been arduous, and taken a lot of time (and col), but the results were well worth it. "So, d'you already know how Hog Wash goes?" he queried, glancing at his partymember. Only the latest in customers, with a well-crafted sword that would look great with a kite shield. Ruler hadn't crafted a kite shield before, but he was keen to try it some day. This customer was as good as any to actually request it of him. "In case ya don't... the point is to kill the boars, take their tusks, and give 'em to Abel." 100% map data completion, 150% quest completion. Ruler wanted to complete every quest, and mutliple times if necessary. It was the most reliable way to make some col. "How do you want to do it? I'll take first strike, then switch? Or do you want to go first and I'll switch in?" Ruler's eyes were set on the boars grazing in the field nearby. Two... three... tch. They'd need to go elsewhere to find the remaining two, he figured.

Pax had been fiddling with his new weapon the entire trip out to where the boars were. In comparison to that useless metal stick he'd bought from a starter shop, this weapon was beautiful. He flipped the weapon in his hand, facing the blade straight down. He got a look at the pommel of it and grinned. If nothing else, the leaf matched that little charm he got from climbing that boring mountain. He put his off hand out and equipped his small shield. He felt kind of bad for the sword, to be paired with such a basic shield. The disappointment in how they didn't mesh very well was plainly obvious on his face. Then, he heard Ruler say something. It took a minute to click what had been said.
"Well, if I'm actually washing hogs," Pax grinned and chuckled a bit, "I'm going to apologise for disappointing you. But yes, I understand it. It's basically like that quest for the pigs, except bigger. Maybe that's a bit simplistic in putting it, but it works."
He smiled and nodded as Ruler explained the idea behind a quest to him. With Pax's armor and new weapon, this quest would be a piece of cake. From what he remembered, the boars were basically just two pigs slapped into one. Bigger for sure, but that just meant easier to hit. He admired the blade one last time, giving it a twirl and hefting it in his hand. The weight was pretty good, too. He wondered just how much damage he was going to do to this boars. He grinned wickedly at the thought.
Raising an eyebrow at the crafter, he shot a teasing smile, "What weapons do crafters use, pray tell? I think I'd prefer to hit first either way, though. It's easier for me to be in front." @ruler

Ruler tried not to show his exasperation at having a joker along. It would've been nicer if this customer wasn't one of those... weirdos... who kept cracking jokes at the drop of a hat. Bit of a wisearse. The sort who're told to shut up and take notes by their teachers. His annoyance was curbed mostly by the obvious admiration Paxilon had for the blade. Ruler wasn't a braggart, but he sure felt proud for his weapons. That elegant shine... the solid handle... the deep fuller...! The boy shook his head and dispelled those thoughts. "I dunno what other crafters use, but," he drew the Curtana from its sheath, blade glimmering in the sunlight. Even if the Knight's Sword was as strong as Curtana, it did not look half as ornate, or as impressive. Knight's Sword followed the bauhaus code where form follows function, Curtana was an expression of skill. "I use this one." He grinned, He used the sword to point to the nearest boar. "But gotcha. Just make sure to drag 'em towards us, so we don't wind up fighting all three at once." Because that would be bad.

Pax could see it. That little bit of distaste for his joke. He was a little disappointed, to be honest. He enjoyed having party members to banter with while he fought. It helped ease the tension, usually. Too much tension in battle was liable to make someone lock up, or even snap entirely. He mentally sweeped the thoughts of it from his mind, though, and he tightened his grip on the leather wraps of his new sword. It fit perfectly.
"What's that?" Pax watched as Ruler pulled out a rather impressive looking sword. It was difficult to get a good look at it, but Pax raised an eyebrow anyway, "Looks a bit gaudy to me, if I'm being honest. But, I suppose if you want to show off your own work, it does the job."
Pax let a wry smile creep on to his face, "Here I am assuming it's your work. I have to remember to stop doing that. Assuming things always gets me in trouble."
He nodded and gave the blade a couple of little swings. Poke fun as he might, Pax was more than admiring ruler's work so far. A sinister shadow fell over Pax's and he looked at Ruler sternly, "If something goes wrong, as often it does in this game, do not hesitate to run. I won't be having my list of dead people piling up for some weapon's test. As nice as the weapon might be."
He barely muttered that last part out as he slowly walked towards the nearest boar, raising his shield arm instinctively when it turned around with a growl. It hadn't quite aggro'd on to him yet, but it definitely saw him. He was impressed by the amount of distance that had been added on to the boar's aggro radius. @ruler

"Ga- ga- gaudy?!" It took everything Ruler had not to shriek it out. That'd attract the boars for sure. It spoke volumes to his self-control that he merely stammered, even if inwardly he screamed. This guy just insulted his Curtana! The pride of Ruler's work! If this Paxilon figure thought he'd ever get to buy another of Ruler's weapons, he had a thing coming. Ruler resolved he wouldn't sell another weapon to this rude man. A resolution he knew he wouldn't stick to. "The weapon won't fail," Ruler grumbled. "So just do your job, get a hog. We'll shishkebab it and have hot pot on the way out." He wished Aincard had hot pot. Ruler watched Paxilon inch closer to the boars. At the very least, the man knew what he was doing. He wasn't like... some people Ruler might know... the one he met whenever he looked in a mirror... who would've just lunged right at 'em and prepared for combat. But the new and improved Ruler would make no such mistakes. He lowered his knees and slid into a combat stance, sword held low like a bokken.

Pax snickered a bit louder than he meant to, and decided to roll with it, "Yes, gaudy. I don't say that with utter distaste for the weapon. It just makes me curious about its design. See, I don't know too much about things that aren't straight swords or katana."
Pax smiled to himself as he inched ever closer to the boar's aggro radius. He could feel the displeasure from Ruler at his calling the sword gaudy. He hadn't meant to insult, he was only speaking his mind. But, that was fine for him; he wasn't here to make friends. He was here to get better and beat this game. He grumbled a bit to himself as Ruler talked about hotpot, "Don't make me hungry at a time like this. It's distracting."
He stopped as the boar grunted and lowered its head at him. He did a bit of calculation in his head that he should have earlier. Boars had almost twice the strength of pigs. He compared what he knew to be the boar's STR to his own, as well as his shield. He would be able to stagger the boar. But barely. He grinned at the thought of being forced to play this carefully.
"Alright, here we go," he muttered to himself as the boar started its signature charge move. He looked at the tusks on the boar, projecting where they would land. He stepped a bit to the side and brought his shield up to bare. Air flowed in through his nose calmly, steadying every fiber of his being.
Collision. The boar had tilted it head and made a diagonal sweeping motion with its tusks, but Pax already knew about that mechanic. He stepped back just a bit as the tusk would have flown under his shield, bring the sharp object just in front of the shield. And then, he brought his sword behind him, light beginning to shine as he shoved his shield forward into the tusk, using the momentum of the boar's rising head to send it further upward, lifting the boar's front feet off the ground. And then, he sword was sailing, slashing through the boar's underside with ease. He grinned with wicked delight. He almost lost himself in the feel of the blade. Almost.

Ruler supposed Paxilon was one of those people. The sort who only had interest in Japanese weaponry and gear. If a tailor were up to it, Ruler expected Paxilon to walk around in a yukata and all. Probably try to live the samurai dream. Dreams that could be made reality in Aincrad, their new real life. The moment Paxilon engaged the boar, every fibre of Ruler's being concentrated on battle. The concurrent thoughts in his mind were all swatted aside for the battle, that all-important event that could spell his life's end if he made a mistake. A charge. A shield collided expertly with the boar's tusks. A deft strike to the underbelly. Ruler licked his lips. Then─ "Switch!" Ruler dashed forward at once. Sword brought to his side. The boar was distracted still by Paxilon. One. Two. Ruler reached the creature. His sword swung, whistling in the wind. Horizontal struck cleanly through the creature. It didn't even have time to cry in agony. The beast exploded in tiny fragments. "Next one's coming!" As if attracted by the din of battle, one of the two boars had wandered perilously close... and was already readying for a charge against Paxilon.

Overwhelming glee was swelling in his head. He had been fighting so many mobs with such a basic, weak sword for so long. His teeth started to show in his smile as the boar shattered. He raised an eyebrow at the one that was charging them now. He laughed softly, and wickedly, "What's wrong, piggy? You want a good weapon, too? Well, I'll let you touch mine for a moment."
He put his left foot forward and spun. He stretched his arm out and practically smacked the boar in the face with his shield as he spun. He had discovered the other day that positioning didn't matter as much as just making contact with the shield. It was a little unorthodox, but he enjoyed it. He pulled his sword out behind him as he staggered the boar. The sword gleamed as he unleashed its skill, a horizontal line of broken code appearing on the mob's face. With a quick laugh, he put his right foot forward and put his blade at his side, charging another skill quickly. Could he kill a boar in two hits?
He wouldn't have aimed for a second sword art the first time, being unaware of how much the sword would stagger the boars, but now he knew. And it delighted him to no end. He unleashed the second art the moment it was ready, grinning almost evilly as the boar was forced to take another step back. He glanced at the mob's HP and smiled. Almost enough to kill a boar in two hits.
"Switch!" He was enjoying himself far too much. @ruler

Their teamwork was excellent. Paxilon met the second boar head-to-head as well. Shield collided with tusk once more, sparks flashing. Sword struck flesh again, chipping off around 40 percent of the boar's HP. Ruler knew Paxilon was laughing and chattering away, but had no mind for it himself. He was waiting for the signal. "Wait, what is... idiot!" Paxilon'd drawn his sword back, and it looked like he was going to use a sword art again... but nothing happened. The cooldown! Is he a newbie?! Ruler didn't even wait for the switch call. He lunged forward, One! Blade flashed, striking across the boar. Its tusk exploded in blue particles just an inch from Paxilon's precious place. "You can't just─" Ruler started, but he substituted a cry instead. The boy staggered back, sword held in front of his chest. But he wasn't the target. The third boar had come charging, slamming into Paxilon's side with fury.

One day. One day he'd gone without combat and he was already rusty. This was ridiculous. He heard Ruler yelling at him, but the boy's voice was completely drowned out in his head. He'd seen the third boar coming, but couldn't move. He muttered a curse under his breath as the boar smacked into him. The air in his lungs was knocked clean out and a sharp pain was driving into his side from where the boar had pierced him. He was suddenly cursing the idea of feeling things in a game. He glanced at the chunk that was taken out of his HP bar and grimaced. This was embarrassing.
"Alright, then," he seemed to mutter at the boar, which had slowed down to end its attack. He pushed himself off quickly and hopped right back into action, making a mental note to not forget about the core mechanics of combat. He stood his ground and properly blocked the attack that the boar carried into after its charge. As the boar stepped back from being blocked, he quickly charged a skill and lashed out at it.
"Switch!"
He circled around the boar, shield up and ready. Ruler's next attack should kill the boar, but he was taking no chances. With a frown, he scolded himself mentally and called out to Ruler, "Sorry! Got a little excited." @ruler

"Switch!" Ruler leapt. His sword sang. The blade hit the boar before Ruler's feet touched the ground again. The beast cried out as it disappeared in a flash of blue particles. The boy wiped some non-existent sweat from his forehead, slid his sword back into its sheath and turned. "You can't just try to attack twice in a row!" the boy launched off. He rapidly closed the distance between Paxilon and him. "See, no matter how good the sword is, if its wielder is so sloppy it'll cry!" If looks could kill, Ruler was sure he'd be guilty of murder there. "Don't get carried away! They may just be boars, but they're still deadly enemies. Dumb mistakes like that could cost your life, or worse, your entire party's." At the start of the game, Ruler had been a hapless newbie, unaware of even how to handle his menu. That day, Ruler was scolding someone who had an entire month of experience in Aincrad up on him.

Pax raised an eyebrow at Ruler. Of course, he understood completely, but he couldn't just accept it like some noob that had been playing the game for only three days. He was getting scolded pretty fervently, and he was caught between admiring the kid and utterly disrespecting him. With a sigh, Pax chose to attempt a mixture of the two. He raised his hand at Ruler and put an apologetic look on his face, "I said I was sorry. I got a little excited, because this blade is the best weapon I've had yet. I got a little careless in the moment, and I understand if you want to get rid of me now. I wouldn't risk my skin for someone stupid enough to try that."
He gave a helpess shrug, "But, we are three pigs down. And it would be a shame to finish this quest without you." @ruler

Ruler stared for a moment, but then nodded. His expression softened and he averted his gaze. "Good, because I don't feel like doing it alone," the boy commented. He walked off already, opening his menu to ensure they actually did have the three tusks. That meant they had two more boars to find. Paxilon's HP had dropped a bit, but they weren't in a pressing need to recover up just yet. Proper execution of the boars meant neither should be taking too much damage. "I think I'll take aggro on the final one," Ruler said. "Your HP's dropping, and I don't have pots." Very few people had pots. Which Ruler found understandable: they were pretty expensive for what they did. The swordsman proceeded on, exploring the farm to see where the remaining boars were hiding.

Pax could barely contain his amusement. He decided that he liked this kid. He followed after Ruler with a bit of rhythm in his step. He was having a lot more fun than he had been the past few days. After a bit of rest, he'd started feeling like himself again. He twirled the sword around in his hand again, chuckling, "It shouldn't matter too much if I aggro it, really. I'll be careful from now on. Besides, I have pots. Why would you not?"
Pax mused on the idea of not getting health potions. They could literally save your life. The fact that Ruler didn't have any struck him as either incredibly stupid or stupidly cocky. Either way, he shook his head in disapproval. Maybe he didn't like this kid as much, after all. As the neared another boar, he smiled, though. Nothing like some old fashioned combat to set his mood right. He snickered.
Old fashioned. Medieval RPG.
"Alright," he took a breath and nodded, "I'll do like I did with the first one. I'll try to keep aggro to myself, and probably not just stand there like a moron." @ruler

Ruler decided he wouldn't answer that last question. He didn't have pots because he invested every spare bit of col into his skills and equipment. Shelling out 10 col for 5 HP... per use... for a total of friggin' 100 col just to lose the battle for health against any monster... seemed like a total waste of money. If anything, he'd wanted the first aid skill, but Search took precedence. If he could spot his enemies, he could avoid them and so explore areas more easily. "What... what are you snickering about?" On second thought, nevermind. Bound to be a stupid joke. "You gotcha. I'll follow-up when you give the go." Ruler took out the Curtana again and readied himself. Two more boars. They were almost done.
