Fujiashi felt the wind blow through his hair as he walked through town towards the front gate, looking around at the other people that were doomed to the same fate that he was. This death game had clearly taken a toll on many of the players here, including himself. If only I had waited another few hours to get on, I would be able to see my family again... The first few nights he was unable to sleep well, refusing to come to terms with the situation. Once he did, however, he realized he was not going to accomplish anything sitting around feeling sorry for himself, hence why he was on his way to take on his first quest, sword by his side.
Fujiashi reached the quest giver, a simple guard NPC needing some pigs killed to thin out the herd as they kept attacking travelers. As he went to accept the quest, however, he realized that it was locked out to him. A blinking "2" stared back at him under "Players." He looked around, seeing a few quest-goers around him, busying themselves in the same way he was attempting to. He sighed heavily, realizing he was going to have to meet someone new as he raised his right hand, accessed a menu, and flipped a toggle, setting himself to Looking for Player. Meeting new people wasn't really a problem, and he knew he would need some friends or acquaintances during his journey for the unforeseeable future, but the fact that he had to wait even a moment struck a weird nerve inside him.
Fujiashi sat against a nearby tree, stared up into the fading daylight, and began to wait...

re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAs the days went by, Aiya grew more complacent with her situation inside of the virtual MMO. Surprisingly, her vision adapted to the new resolution rather quickly, and the game became like a second skin. Almost as if it’s, you know, your reality. What Aiya was having trouble adjusting to, though, was the hand combat element of the game. She’d spent her time so far completing delivery quests, menial tasks that didn’t take much out of her. Low risk, but also low reward. She had heard that there were monster quests, and was hoping to find someone to run one with...that, hopefully, wouldn't reap all of the rewards for themselves or leave her to die.
The redhead saw a flashing search beacon a few meters in front of her, operated by a green looking brunette. She wasn’t sure that he hadn’t spent much time acclimating to this new environment, but she was confident that was the case.
“Oi,” she exclaimed, standing in front of the obviously distracted boy. “Are you trying to do this pig quest? Because I’m looking for some experience, and human shields are always helpful.”

Fujiashi snapped out of his daze, locking eyes with the brown orbs in front of him. He frowned at the human shield comment, rising to his feet and brushing off his clothes, the standard starting gear with very minimal stats. He nodded to answer her question. "Yeah, I'm looking for someone to team up with, although 'Human Shield' is not one of my job titles, at least last time I checked." Fujiashi brought up his menu, turning off the beacon and making a small show of looking at something he knew wasn't there. "Nope, fresh out of 'Human Shield.'" Before closing his menu he went to send an invite, remembering that names are not displayed to the public as he closed the menu. He smiled as he held out a hand to the auburn haired female in front of him. "My name is Fujiashi. I look forward to working with you, miss..."

re: take quest, kill pigs, get col"Ha, ha, ha," Aiya said flatly. "What a clever joke, and so fresh! I hope your Sword Arts are on par with your Laugh Arts!" She gave him a forced smile to punctuate how little humor she got from his joke. Aiya looked down at his hand, and then back up at him. "Fu-ji-a-shi, huh?" she sounded out, "That's a mouthful of a name."
"My name is Ay," she paused, taking a second to remember that in Sword Art Online her name was now her character's and not her own. "Aiya." She continued, "Although, you could have learned that from...a party menu.... which you would see if you, you know, made a party... so we could do this quest?"
Aiya swiped her user interface open and selected, "create party." She shot him an invite, putting her hand on her hip as she waited for him to accept. I probably shouldn't rely on him too much. He really must be as green as I thought he was.

He shrugged off her cynicism at his attempt at a joke, trying to lighten the mood as making small talk wasn't his greatest asset.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Aiya!" He looked at her curiously at her next statement. "Although...How could I create a party with you if I did not know your name? It picks up everyone in the area, so I would have had to make a guess."
Fujiashi shut his mouth as the party invite appeared in front of him, seeing that she was not amused. He hit 'Accept' before a feeling of dread overtook him. I just realized...I've never lifted this sword of mine since I started this game. I know that the system will correct your form as long as you are close. It can't be that much different than other video games, right? I only have a Horizontal slash and a diagonal one, so how hard can this really be?
Fujiashi interacted with the guard again, this time accepting the quest as he turned to face Aiya. "Well, shall we get to it?" he asked, not expecting a response as he turned on his heel and started down the path to a pack of Angry Pigs. Level 1 shouldn't be too bad. "Welp...ladies first!" He motioned towards them as he backed off a step or two to give her room.

re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAiya watched his movements curiously as he tried to force her to lead the way. She felt less and less comfortable with her ally as the seconds went by, but she needed the experience. And, really, who gets killed by pigs?
"Have you ever killed a monster in this game before?" The redhead asked him, expecting the 'no' answer. "I imagine it's self explanatory, but I've yet to venture out of the towns by myself, so I wouldn't have any first hand experience. I usually leave that to, eh, other party members." Her human shield comment rose to the back of her throat, but this time she bit her tongue.
Aiya glanced at her quest sheet, to see how many pigs they needed to slay. Five. Simple enough. She scanned the open field, looking for one by itself.
As she cornered a pig, she realized that she really had no clue what to do. Thankfully, the innocent-looking creature didn't realize she was there, yet. Aiya took a deep breath before activating her Slant Sword Art. Immediately after connecting with the pig's back, the creature went from a docile piglet to an angry hog.
Aiya began to back a way from it slowly, "Uh... a little help, here??" she called out, as the creature geared up to charge.

Fujiashi shook his head at Aiya's question, realizing that they were in the same boat as neither of them had left the town. He watched her square up in front of the pig, holding his breath. He watched her sword glow as she activated her Sword Art, watching her body glide as the system guided her movement. He heard the loud THUD as sword met flesh, before a loud SQUEAL rang into the air around them. He saw the Pig paw at the ground, beginning his charge.
"AIYA!" He leaped forward towards her and the pig, drawing his sword and beginning a Horizontal Sword Art slash as he went. The system's momentum carried him forward, but in his reckless charge he forgot that he was right handed, so striking the pig across from left to right left him vulnerable, and the pig's charge connected square into his chest before the slashes momentum threw it to the side. He groaned and stumbled as he tried to recover his footing.

re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAiya closed her eyes as Fujiashi jumped in front of her, bracing for the worst. She cracked her eyes open just in time to see him stumble. Aiya watched him tumble to the ground, and the pig's aggressive stance become fully focused on her partner.
She knew her basic attack would be nearly useless at such a low level, so Aiya resolved that Sword Arts, while slightly impractical, would be the best course of action for these fights. She jogged around to the pig's backside and activated her Horizontal, wincing as the pig's loud squeal pierced her ears. As the pink creature's attention became squarely focused on Aiya again, she began to think of a battle plan.
"If you can distract them, I'll deliver the damage," she called out to Fujiashi. "I'm quicker than you are, anyway." She stared the creature down, hoping Fujiashi was quick enough on the skill-draw that it wouldn't knock her flat on her back. But, even if it does... I think this plan will put us on top.

As Aiya stepped up to attack, Fujiashi stood shakily to his feet. As the pig squealed audibly he snapped his focus from her to it, readying up his SLANT Sword Art as he brought it square down on it's back, causing another ear piercing squeal as it stumbled, trying to turn towards him as it did. I never thought that an AI would get fatigued. This is hyper realistic. I almost feel bad for killing this poor little animal, but we have to make a living somehow in this world I guess. He was snapped out of his thoughts as he heard the familiar scraping of hooves on dirt. Fujiashi squared up, holding his sword to block any incoming attack as Aiya's plan made sense to him. The pig let out a frustrated grunt as it charged... Angry Pig LV. 1 10HP | 15 STR | 0 DEX Fujiashi LV. 1 85HP | 0 DEX | SLANT cooldown

re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAiya focused her eyes on the pig's back, inhaling sharply before laying the smack-down on it with one final Slant skill. As the pig shattered into scraps of data under her rusty one handed sword, she exhaled. "Well. That was, uh, surely interesting." Only four more to go.
Aiya held the sword she'd gotten through the fight with at arm's length from her. "Boy, they spare every expense with starting gear, don't they?" She thought aloud.
She looked around and didn't see any other singular pigs, instead; groups of two or three. Aiya frowned. "Are you ready to uh... what was that word, 'mob' pigs?" She asked him. "Or can you manage to be stealthy enough bait them individually?" Her tone reflected how much faith she had in Fujiashi's ability to successfully kite her pigs.

Fujiashi breathed a sigh of relief as the pig dispersed in front of him. He looked over at Aiya, glad that she was skilled enough to team up with to defeat a foe. When she advised that there would be no more single battles, he looked around, finding a set of two that were far enough away to not aggro the set next to them. He looked around and found a small rock near his feet. Hmm...this could be a good way to aggro them without having to get close to the rest of the packs without knowing threat ranges, or even if that mechanic is in this game. He picked up the rock, timing it to where the set of two were at their farthest in their pattern. He wound up, launching the rock hard towards the frontmost pig. A loud squeal erupted, letting him know that the the rock had hit its target. He held his breath as the pig turned towards him and began its charge. He let the breath out as it charged towards them alone, before noticing the one behind it began over as well. He groaned as he dodged the charge of the nearest one, hearing it skid to a halt as it begins to turn around. re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAiya watched her partner arc a pebble into the pigs' damage circle and draw their attention. As the two creatures charged at him, she focused all of her energy into a Slant sword art, catching one pig's underside and giving it some air as it flew feet away. She hoped that the physical distance would give them enough breathing room to dispose of the other pig as well.
"Go ahead and focus on that one, the weak one," Aiya instructed, pointing at it with her sword. She heard the hoofbeats of a charging hog behind her and followed Fujiashi's lead this time, jogging in a circle around the other pair. Unfortunately, the pig was faster than Aiya imagined it to be and knocked her flat on her face in the dirt. For the first time in the weeks that Sword Art Online had been active, Aiya saw her hit point bar begin to drop and with it her adrenaline levels began to rise. She pushed herself up off of the ground and turned to face the pig, glaring at it; challenging it.
"Is that the best you've got?" Aiya goaded the creature, as it geared up to attack.

Fujiashi took advantage of the injuries sustained on the weakened hog to bring his rusted sword across its body utilizing the HORIZONTAL Sword Art, causing it to falter as it attempted to brace for a charge. As the system released its hold on his body, Fujiashi turned to see Aiya get slammed by the healthy pig. As she turned and began taunting the small hog he couldn’t help but smile slightly.
This really isn’t just a game anymore. These bits of data are reacting to us, and seem to show many of the traits that the animals in the outside world did. Then there’s us, these Players that are doing nothing more than surviving and interacting with the world around us. We chastise and taunt these beings as if they had knocked us over in reality. Fujiashi turned his attention back to the pig he was tasked with defeating, and readied himself for the next exchange as it regained its composure and charged.

re: take quest, kill pigs, get colAiya cut the pig horizontally, watching its hit bar fall as the guided lines from her Sword Art's strike faded from her interface. She narrowed her eyes at the pig as it struggled to recover, but came at her again. With both of her Sword Arts on cool down, the redhead looked down at the rusted sword in her hand and tightened her grip on it. You've been in tougher spots than this in sparring matches, Ayame, she coached herself. Don't lose focus.
Aiya charged past the squealing monster, holding her weapon out to her right to clothesline the creature as they crossed. She exhaled as it landed to the side of their original trajectory and resumed her stance from before. Patterns. It's all patterns. This isn't difficult at all.
As the timer ran out on her exhausted abilities, Aiya braced for the sequence again, mentally counting how many it would take to extinguish her foe. Only four more. We have this in the bag.

Fujiashi watched the pig attempt to charge him, but after the most recent attack it seemed to be disoriented as it ran past him by about a foot. He readied his sword, bringing it down across its back as it passed with a SLANT Sword Art, causing it to squeal out in pain. He watched Aiya use her blade against her target, and realized that he would need to get a new sword immediately if that was the only damage it could do. As she stanced up, he realized that she must have prior experience with a sword. He smiled, wondering if they would be friends after this. She seemed...interesting to say the least.
The cooldown timer reset on his HORIZONTAL Art, and he brought his sword up, watching it take on a yellowish glowing property as his senses seemed to melt away as the system took over for him. He exhaled softly as he relaxed, blade carrying him to his target.
