You'd think for a man with the creative talents to create an entire elaborate world and find a way to trap thousands of people in said world, the first town you started in would be a bit more creative. It certainly didn't help that the location was a mouthful to say or type.
He shook his head immersed in his thoughts, and made the familiar path through the Town Center to the Inn. A lot of weapons were on sale for him to get there, not to mention NPC craftsmen, but he needed quality. He needed to get out there and start living. He was going to be another craftsman, but a dedicated crafter was only ever as good as their tools and their materials. He remembered a skill that he was never able to get to during the beta, and if he was right, then the skill might pop-up soon, and if so, he couldn't just buy materials. He had to find good quality materials.
That meant he needed something that people in his profession hadn't needed in hundreds of years... a weapon. And he had the perfect person in mind. The friend he met in the next town over. He took a seat in the little tavern of the inn, ordering a drink and waiting for Ruler to arrive. |

He was never late, but today was the exception. It wasn't anything unusual for someone to request a weapon from him. Nine times out of ten, people preferred a custom craft over a premade craft.
Today was special. It started when he accidentally double-booked an appointment. Bunyan's message had made him so excited he accepted without a second thought, but he'd agreed to meet someone else at the same time.
Ruler'd only barely been able to reschedule and get everything in order, but he was already ten minutes late. If this had been school, the teacher would've made him write a letter of apology to reflect. Possibly clean the bathroom.
When he finally slammed open the inn door, Ruler was heaving despite being in a game. The strong smell of beer hung in the inn tavern, mixed with the fragrance of bacon and eggs. A surprisingly good smell, considering the last time he was there.
He identified Bunyan almost immediately, and thudded over the wooden floor.
"Sorry! Sorry, I'm late. Late," the boy gasped, dropping down into the seat opposite Bunyan. "I hope... hope you didn't wait long..." |

He smiled with a chuckle and put down his mug.
"My friend, you have nothing to worry about. I only just got here myself." he said, opening his menu to get to the inventory. With a quick scroll, he selected the Iron he had in his inventory, and let the pile clink softly on the table. 10 processed ores of iron. "I'm surprised that they still have these mats so easy... but on the higher floors its supposed to get harder."
With the materials on the table, he opened his menu again, looking through his own menu skills. "Iron is apparently good quality, much better than copper. I'd craft it myself, but I've started late in the game. I'm already too strong for what I currently have." he said, producing an item called <<Broken Rusted Sword>>. The beginner sword he had been using had shattered, and he was able to salvage the hilt mostly. The rest of the broken blade... that shattered into data.
"What do you think?" he asked, ready to get a transaction going. |

bunyan - trying something new writing-wise. Ruler reached out and grabbed one of the chunks of iron ore. The metal felt lukewarm to the touch. A good weight. He could tell Bunyan had picked these chunks with care. Nothing like Ruler's first clumsy attempts at selecting ores.
"Um... it's better than copper." The boy held the chunk to the light. "Not as pretty, but it's good." A copper weapon gave, at best, a plus twenty bonus to damage. Not shabby, but iron could reach twice that.
Everyone understood the value of two times as much.
He eyed the broken sword next.
"Did you want another sword?" He'd had one of those himself. Threw it away, though. "Or do you have something in mind?"
Rapiers needed dexterity. Axes needed strength. But a one-handed sword was universal. Anyone and everyone could use one, regardless of level or stats.
Easily the most requested of his crafts.

Especially his weapon proficiency. This was a chance to get a weapon that his skill set demanded, but at the same time, he remember that there were some skill requirements for some weapons.
"That's... that's a good question. I expected to have more time just developing skills, but without the worry of dying. My character was designed to be a strength tank, and I have two-handed axe proficiency. But I think it requires more strength than I have. not too far off, but at the present... as a weapon-crafter.. what's your opinion?" |

Ruler reclined in his chair, opening his own menu. He went over his notes on weaponry. Two-handed axes: 26 Strength required at D-Rank. Ruler whistled between his teeth.
He'd pumped every stat point into Dexterity, and wasn't anywhere near close to reaching that number.
"Well, if it's a D-Rank weapon, I um..." Ruler set his menu to visible and turned it to Bunyan. He pointed to the requirement. "Unless that's a number you'll meet soon, I'd recommend a one-handed sword. Those don't have any requirements."
If it was an aesthetic thing, Ruler thought he could probably make it look a little like an axe. For familiarity. What made an axe an axe anyway?
"Other options... are a less-than-D weapon, but the difference's pretty large... It's your call, though. What's the advantage of the axe?" |

Ruler had a point... a bit point. Leather wasn't exactly known for its tankiness, and in fact the armor always gave Dex instead of Str, which is what he really needed to wield the axe. He was supposed to be building himself to be a tank, and instead crafted some leatherworking armor.
"You're probably right. I'm not yet good enough to put myself on the front lines... but I really can't avoid it if I'm going to support my fellow players. I'll have to work on my strength while I work on crafting. Alright then, let's do a standard sword. Something that would fit me, obviously, and I can use to practice for when its time to pick up an axe. In the meantime, I need to work on my crafting too... I hear the higher crafts are more diverse."
He switched menus as he looked for the trade menu to give him the Iron. "So... how much are you charging for this?" |

Ruler waved his hand. "There's um... there's no fee attached to my craft. At least, I'm not going to charge you, I mean." He wasn't running a charity, but altogether Ruler always wanted to give a little discount here and there.
As far as swords went... Bunyan looked like a big guy. A small sword would probably not fit him, but the boy also didn't want to push the limits of a sword and accidentally wind up making a two-handed sword.
Well... he'd some ideas. There were a bunch of sword concepts he had been readying for a sort of mass-produced model. A custom for-you-only model could cost additional col. It was a scheme both to lighten his workload and earn some col.
"And yeah, higher crafts are pretty diverse." He smiled sheepishly. "My first sword was... well, it was pretty awful. Looks-wise and stat-wise. Once you rank up, you can do more amazing stuff."

"You really didn't need to do that, but thank you. I promise I'll offer you the same courtesy. As one crafter to another." he said, opening his menu again to bring up his currently single digit skill levels for all his current crafting skills. His highest was light armor at the moment, but that was because he had a lot of time and materials then.
"My plan is to see the other different branches of crafting... its going to be harder to gain enough col on the higher floors, there are rumors that some crafting skills are non-combat. Just a good way to make some money. Certainly will help with staying close behind the front lines. Of course, these are only rumors. I remember seeing carpentry, but we never found out where to unlock it." he said, tapping the table.
He looked over the sword that was one the table, nodding as if he was appraising it. "Wow, I can see why my sword cracked. I think the lower grade weapons are designed to degrade and shatter... maybe thats why there was an upgrade skill in the beta. No one used it, of course, we just made our own at that point." he said, shaking his head.
"I would probably be best just selling my first couple of crafts to NPC to get some of the cost back. I would never give a low grade weapon to a player, let alone a front-liner." he stated, going back through the menu and opening the trade window for the materials he had on the table.

Ruler let the other guy talk on about the various things he knew. The boy'd opened his menu and was tapping away in the notes section.
Carpentry, weapon upgrade, degradation. These were terms he needed to remember. He didn't know much of games, but he knew that it was inconceivable to finish a hundred floor game with everything you know from the first floor.
Otherwise, it wouldn't be challenging. Kayaba no doubt had made a challenging game.
"Well, you look like you know... well, a lot." He took back the Curtana. "If possible, I'd like to talk again at some point? I'm not really the gaming type. This's actually my first game, so well... it'd be nice to learn as much as I can, be as prepared as possible."
He grinned sheepishly. "Sorta like cramming for a test, huh? Except failing marks are... a lot harsher, here."
Ruler accepted the trade, and frowned thoughtfully. "So I'll get started on a good sword, and I'll bring it by later, all right? It shouldn't... shouldn't take too long to craft one. In fact, I'll get started right away."

"I'll take my leave for the night. If you need anything, send me a message. I'll probably stay here... see if my old room is still available." he said, nodding to Ruler. With that, pending any last questions, he turned and went to the front desk for a place to sleep tonight. |

He nodded, said his goodbyes to Bunyan. Rather than go after the craft immediately, Ruler loitered around, going over his notes. He expanded where necessary, and added some smaller, personal notes about things.
Knowledge was power, both on the other side and here, and Ruler wanted to have enough of it.
It'd be a right thing if he happened to ever stumble into problems just because he didn't cram as much as he ought to have.
When he was satisfied by the notes, he'd already ordered two drinks and downed both. Ruler stretched, and with a lazy look outside realised it was already dark out.
Again.
Well, that was fine. He'd just get started early in the morning, deliver some swords around, and then make his move and set out elsewhere.
He stretched. This was going to be a looooong week. He needed a holiday.
