The girl stared at the console, sighed and closed it. She hopped off the crate she'd been using as a seat, stretching her limbs. There was the pleasant aroma of coffee hanging around the room. The rhythmic sound of a knife on a cutting board sounded from across the counter. "Ya done, girly?" The burly man looked up from his work. He was a player she'd met moments earlier; he claimed his cafe was pretty good. It wasn't much of one, though: mostly a front room he hired from NPCs. The coffee was decent. Her mother's homebrew was better. Not that it'd be fair to compare. "Nishishi~ I failed, I'm sorry to say. Not gonna be today." She smiled. Somehow, failing just made it that much more exciting to try and succeed. Teasing Night was vast becoming one of the funnier things in the game. She'd be lying if she said she earnestly had wanted him to ask her out on a date, but... well, rejection still stung. It was the same as that guy in the real world. Aaah, she shouldn't have told him she wouldn't date someone who couldn't keep up in a race. Track and field members really were faster than the average. DaT waved goodbye, then left the small cafe. She stepped out into one of the many small alleys. The girl navigated the streets expertly until she stepped out onto the main road. To the north was Black Iron Palace, and the town square. To the south, a towering gate, but also some greenery. It was almost mysterious why there'd be a park there, but it wasn't something DaT was interested in finding out. The sky was clear. Not a cloud to see. It was honestly a good day. DaT sighed, then conjured her usual smile. There were rumours to scope out. She hopped onto one of the benches by the wayside, and started observing players.

Unfortunately, sitting on his arse all day and doing nothing was quickly becoming an impossibility.
He’d been so sure that it was a joke, then that there was no way this would be allowed to continue, that he’d not bothered to do…well…anything. He’d laughed to himself at the idiots eager to throw themselves at monsters, certain that they’d be doing nothing more than risking their life for a vague dream of victory that would never come to fruition. Once it was clear that they were stuck, the authorities would shut the whole scheme down and they’d be free to go their own ways. He wasn’t even convinced that players actually died when their avatar did; sure, they disappeared, but who was to say they weren’t simply finding themselves back in the real world, or forced to create some new character?
Only it hadn’t ended. Days had slipped by, each hour dragging through his dull existence, and each morning he woke to find he was still stuck here, still trapped in this stupid game. A few days ago the boredom had driven him to check out the current quests on offer, though he’d quickly declared the majority ridiculous. Finding lost kites, him? He wasn’t quite desperate enough yet to subject himself to that. Similarly, he had little interest in setting up shop and playing the part of some nobody NPC.
Which left adventuring. He’d not quite worked up the nerve to attempt anything combat related – not that he’d ever admit the fear, even to himself – but he was quickly running out of anything to do. Given how little equipment he had, a rusty sword and the clothes on his back, he was even debating picking up one of the inane quests the town’s NPCs were offering. Maybe the threat of death was enough to make him swallow his pride a little.
Steeling himself, desperately hoping that nobody would see him submit to the asinine request, he sauntered through the streets, grateful at least for the sun on his face. It was surprising how busy the town still was; it seemed most people had, like him, opted to stay here, though the reasons behind the decision always differed, and he couldn’t even criticise them for being cowards without being a thorough hypocrite. Annoying. At least he’d made up his mind to rectify that situation. Live or die, anything had to be better than being stuck in this perpetual monotony.
Hands resting casually in his pockets, he glanced across the throng of people milling about. Most were absorbed in their own business, mostly chatting between themselves, though the silent girl on the bench drew his attention. Eager for anything that might put off the inevitability of having to do some work for a change, he winked at her when she looked at him and made for her position.
“See something you like?” While he was passably fluent in Japanese, he still spoke with a noticeable accent, though he’d overexaggerated the words enough to make them easily understandable. Hopefully the overt flirtation would make her blush and provide him with some easy entertainment.

A twinkle played in the girl's eyes. He strode with the confidence of a playboy. Admittedly, he was handsome. Many girls likely fell for his good looks. She'd seen his type before. Once. An American family had stopped by on their tourist trek. The son's exotic looks attracted the girls, and he knew it. Broke two hearts before someone broke his nose. She giggled. His drawn-out vowels and exaggerated pronunciation was more comical than cool. She wasn't sure if he'd intended to be funny. "Nyahaha~ should there be something nice to see~?" Her voice was a sing-song, and she stressed both rhyming words. She hated to admit it, but someone like Night was more her type. There was something about unruly hair, hard expressions and the inelegant ways of a shut-in nerd that appealed to DaT. She couldn't say why precisely. She loved the expressions on their faces when she teased them. The way they were so easily flustered, and the way they could stammer. A pretty boy with the confidence of a king was nothing at all like the sort she liked. "Word of advice, and I don't mean to put you down... but speaking like that makes you sound like a clown." She laughed.

He kept the smile on his face despite his irritation at her words, not allowing her the pleasure of seeing that they’d hit their mark. “I would like to see you attempt to speak English,” he muttered instead, switching languages, confident that she wouldn’t understand him.
And then, because despite everything he didn’t want to abandon the conversation yet, he swapped back. “Apologies. I’ve only been living in Japan for two months, so I’m still practicing.” He’d been lazy in perfecting his Japanese – due to only live there for six months before returning to England, he hadn’t seen any profit in wasting time polishing his language skills when he was understandable enough to be practicable. Most of those he’d spent time with had spoken English anyway.
“Maybe you could teach me, hm?” He flirted on auto pilot, even if she was a little young. Cute, he supposed, though that laugh was already starting to irritate. “I’m Icarus. Nice to meet you.” A smile in place of a handshake, seemingly genuine, as he kept his words full of warmth and fake sincerity.

DaT did not show she understood his English just fine. She had no intention to get into a childish match with him of who spoke the other's language worst. She was confident she spoke English better, anyhow. "Nishishi~" Her cheery grin never left her face. The first to apologise always lost. The first to make excuses lost. He surprised her a little by continuing to flirt, but DaT had perfected the art of keeping up her grin. "Nyahaha~ I'll pass, that sounds like a chore. Your smile's nice, but 500 col'd attract me more." She leaned in a little closer and her grin widened. "You can call me Dee, anything else, you're buying me coffee." Did he realise Icarus was the name of a guy so arrogant, he flew too close to the sun and died for it? Didn't seem like the sort of person you'd want to style yourself after, Dee opined.

Was there something mentally wrong with her? Nobody, he was sure, laughed quite so often, and not like that – maybe that was why she was out here on her own. He was starting to regret approaching her.
Then she upped the weirdness by continuing to speak in rhyme. What could have been dismissed as coincidence the first time now looked, in all likelihoods, intentional, and it grated a little as she continued. Some sort of deliberate ploy to act cute, or special, or was it simply that he’d stumbled over the most cuckoo player in the town? Fantastic.
He deliberately ignored the fact he didn’t have 500 col, or even 50, and tried not to clench his jaw as she giggled again. “Dee, then,” he returned, possessing little desire to take her anywhere. “Not making the most of the good weather to leave town? Hunting boars in the rain is miserable, I’ve heard.”

She even gave him an excuse for coffee. Looked to DaT that this guy wasn't half as much of a player as he'd appeared to be. That, or she must've disappointed him with her personality. Tough luck, blondie. Though it was still possible he was going to invite her to hunt boars. She liked combat, but honestly, the penalty of death hanging over her head tempered any desire to exchange her FPS skills for MMORPG skills. DaT wondered, for the umpteenth time since logging in, why she had even bothered with the 'world's first VRMMORPG'. The last three letters ought've been 'FPS.' "You're talking like hunting them at all isn't miserable." She hopped from the bench. "Honestly, your intentions are undecipherable. What's more, who'd want to hunt a boar? All the good players're hunting wolves by the score." Everyone who was only now just starting to play were... people who had cooped themselves up in time, trembling in fright, or people who─ No, just cowards.

DANCING THROUGH LIFE He shrugged. Not like he could lie about his prowess; anyone with eyes could see how terrible his gear was, and any claim he made of hunting difficult mobs would be quickly laughed down. Even if he had no intention of talking to her again, he still cared too much what others thought of him. “What would you like to me intend?” She’d shot him down from the get-go, and was now wondering why he hadn’t taken her up on an offer for coffee? Girls were strange. Boys, he’d found, were far more straightforward – and far more likely to blush, as they were more unused to being chased. Strange how they both had that enjoyment in common. “I’d intended to become a crafter, but I’m already bored of being stuck in town. Decided to try adventuring instead, you know, find a little more excitement. I’ll be killing wolves soon enough.”He hadn’t even seen a mob yet.

It was a harder question than it looked like. Part of her wanted to tell him that there really wasn't anything in particular she had hoped his intentions were. A louder part of her was disappointed he, too, did not ask her out. Maybe it was her personality after all; it was a curse to be her. A curse DaT willingly endured. "But you don't look even close to a good player yet." She frowned. "You do know that the first few names we crossed off at the Monument of Life are because of dire wolves, right?" DaT's grin returned brightly. "So if you ask me, and it's advice that's good... Start small, or you'll only turn into dire wolf food." Her sing-song had a melancholic touch to it. DaT remembered the last person she'd advised against taking on the wolves. One of the first names to be crossed off. She earnestly did not want this guy to be equally reckless in a bid to prove himself, or whatever motivated him. made by: n/a from link-start

| | Did that first sentence rhyme? He spent long moments deliberating it, only to wonder at himself when he caught himself. Why did he even care? Hopeful for a moment that perhaps she was becoming more normal, his hopes were dashed when she launched back into that strange sing-song attempt at verse.
“Don’t worry so much, sweetheart,” her murmered, taking a half step towards her. “I know what I’m doing. You’ll see me up there with the best before long.” Or maybe half a step behind; the front line would be dangerous, and he’d rather take advantage of their hard work to boost himself through with ease. He’d need to find the right line between inspiring jealously and not putting himself in unnecessary danger.
“Don’t fancy taking them on yourself?” He cast an assessing gaze over her, not seeing anything that would suggest she was better than him: they were both still wearing the near-identical armour that all players had begun the game with. Grinning, he tilted his head to the side. “Scared?”

She stepped back reflexively when he stepped forward. A hint of surprise left her face as quick as it had come. I'm not your sweetheart, chump. The retort stayed on her mind. "Nishishi~ I have good cause to stay right where I am." She poked him right on the nose. "If that makes you think I'm scared, well, I don't give a damn." She considered asking 500 col so she'd cough up the reason, but he wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. Aaaah, but she very much wanted to know what his plans were! If there was some secret way that'd let someone slum around town for weeks on end and still catch up with the frontline, she wanted to know. It could be info that'd be of help to all Aincrad. Hoarding that sort of intel was almost criminal. A better part of her told her he was bluffing. If there was such a way, he'd have employed it immediately and secured a foothold by now. | | A predatory smile tugged at his lips as she stepped back automatically. Maybe she didn’t think much of his skills, but she must still see him as something of a threat. He would just have to work until he inspired that sort of wariness in everyone, not just small girls who were still hiding in town. “I believe you,” he murmured, consolingly, though it was obvious he didn’t actually. “You can only do what you think is best.” If that was hiding in town, well, he didn’t really give a damn. He’d decided he’d had enough of it; if everyone did, there would just be more competition to reach the top ranks, and that would just mean more work for him. “Ah, yeah, you’re right.” No point struggling to continue this conversation when there was no profit for him and clearly no interest for her. “Maybe I’ll bring you back a pretty wolf pelt. Ciao, sweetheart.”[ thread end ] |
