Light filtered through the trees, casting tiger-stripe shadows on the patch of grass below them. Icarus leant back and tilted his face up towards the dappled sunlight, closing his eyes briefly as he appreciated his surroundings. Why had he waited so long to leave the town?
Opting out of fetching kites or chasing kittens, he’d decided to take up some quest to climb a mountain. Easy, and it least it gave him the chance to stretch his legs and escape the tedium of the town. He’d been assured the mobs commonly found around here were nothing to be worried about, his own combat skills currently nothing to write home about, and other players who’d completed the same quest had assured him it was worth it for a newbie like him.
He’d also been told he’d need to be in a party to do it, but he’d ignored that entirely and set out on his own. Surely if it was so easy, he wouldn’t need to drag some other body along with him. Unwilling to broadcast how inexperienced he was, he was determined to achieve something worth being proud of before he interacted too much with other players.
With any luck, the quest rewards would let him be able to afford some better gear, though it was hard to know where to start. Used to getting whatever he wanted in life, it was embarrassing to be walking around in second hand clothing, and the cheap sword holstered on his hip didn’t fill him with confidence regarding his combat potential.
At least, he supposed, the only way was up. Figuratively and literally.

"It's hot..." Genjo sighed sluggishly. The tree line on either side of the boy was dense enough to provide a shield from the suns touch, but even under this patchily shaded ground the air was uncomfortably warm for him. Was this quest worth the trouble? Originally he'd planned to ascend by himself, but warnings of mob spawns caused him to hesitate; a conflict on the cliffs of the mountain seemed treacherous to say the least. The player decided on waiting for someone to partner up with, just in case. That's what he wanted, but for the past three hours the player had wasted waiting, sitting cross legged on a fallen tree right beside this overgrown path.
This path definitely looked like it was the one described to him, so why was it so empty? The pale-skinned boy began to debate whether to travel the path alone; he gained confidence in his ability after spending most of his play time dueling in The Town of Beginnings, but outside of that he regrettably had very little experience in PvE. Why did he even take directions from a guy he met at a tavern, he grumbled to himself.
"Isn't there supposed to be monsters out here.." He said, yawning placidly. Three hours of doing nothing was surprisingly tiring work, the boy couldn't help the growing heaviness of his eyelids despite knowing what his situation was. He wondered if he would be safe closing his eyes, just for a few minutes. Realizing he no longer had the patience for wondering, he let his body rest on the felled tree, shutting his eyes for the first time in days. This feeling was nice, but he couldn't relish it for too long or sleep would take him; to keep himself awake Genjo focused on the breeze. GENJO "ONI" NISHIYAMA PHARAOH LEAP. A bird trilled in the trees above him, as genuine as anything he’d heard in the real world. He still couldn’t get over how eerily authentic the whole game was, and had to wonder how long it would take before he occasionally forgot that nothing in here was real. Months? Years? He frowned, trying to shrug off unpleasant imaginations, and focused on the path instead.
Someone was sat on the ground ahead. An NPC? Maybe related to the quest he’d taken. Perhaps he should have listened to those advising him to do it in a party. From what he’d been told by others and the brief quest description, he’d expected it to be a simple A to B quest, with little combat or complications.
Hand hovering above the hilt of his sword, he approached, only to discover it was a player instead, eyes closed and back resting against a tree trunk. Something vaguely familiar about him – maybe they’d met in town or something. A quick once over of the prone body revealed it to be about as badly geared as him, so probably not a threat or anyone worth sucking up to. Content to leave the boy to his nap, Icarus continued on.
Only for a branch to snap noisily underneath a badly placed foot. He winced heavily and paused, glancing back over his shoulder to see whether he’d disturbed the other.

.:Mitsuhide:. |

A Mountain Out of a Molehill [Quest/Open] | | All Mitsuhide wanted to do was to find a nice, big log and smack himself with it. He’d spent too much time on his own, bemoaning the death of his brother. Now he was stuck, doing everything he could just to find players willing to complete lower-tier quests with him. So far, he’d been shot down by nearly every player he’d solicited - dozens by his reckoning. Either they were too busy doing real quests, or they were terrified to even step foot outside of the Town of Beginnings.
He couldn’t complain, though. It was his fault for taking so long to come back to his senses. And now, here he was, trudging onward, hoping against hope that there might be another player to come along so he might party up to complete a quest.
That was when he spotted them – the two other players. He paused, darting behind a tree to watch them interact. Even though the two had green cursors, you could never be too careful. There was a pause before the first one continued onward, but there didn’t seem to be an exchange. Mitsu guessed that the two weren’t affiliated. Maybe this would be a good chance to move in. If he was lucky, one of the two might be working on the same quest.
The man stepped out from behind the tree, and took a tentative step toward the two. He glanced down at the player laying down, apparently napping, and moved a bit closer.
“So, uh, you wouldn’t happen to be working on any quests, would you?”
He paused for a moment, before considering his manners. He bowed slightly.”
“My apologies. I am Mitsuhide. A pleasure.”

He hadn't noticed earlier, but with his guard lowered appreciating the serene wilderness was finally possible; he relished the earthy, piney smell of of the forest and the faint chirping of distant birds. Everything from the coarse texture of the tree's husk pressing against his skin to the gentle flow of the wind, every sense was being stimulated. In contrast to the crushingly grim atmosphere of the starting town, this place almost seemed like heaven if the risks could be overlooked. Still, no matter how convincing his surroundings were he knew he couldn't be lulled into any form of security; the only real element in this game was death, everything else was only a distraction! That was the mantra he would always use to control his drifting mind, but after hours of waiting not even that could keep him alert; that is, until..
*Snap*
The loud and abrupt noise immediately brought out an instinctive reaction from the resting boy; his eyes flinged open almost as fast as his body sprung up to meet the situation. His hand grasped at the hilt of his rather unimpressive sword, but before he could draw it his body paused. It was another player, a fact that brought both relief and self-doubt; he cursed himself for being so careless as to let someone move in so close unnoticed. As if the ignorance of his own safety wasn't enough, he also nearly missed his chance at a partner. The sapphire-eyed player tightened his brows in disbelief, exuding out a heavy breath in frustration. Then from behind a voice spoke out, which was even more startling than the branch cracking; Genjo pivoted on his right foot, whipping around to meet the source of the voice. However, surprise was soon replaced with confusion. This 'Mitsuhide' man seemed friendly enough, even politely bowing, but the impeccable timing didn't sit well him.
Still, he knew this could be the windfall he was looking for. Releasing the hilt of his sword, he studied Mitsuhide's form for a few moments; unable to detect any hostility he finally relaxed, deciding to speak up, "Mitsuhide, then...Well, I've actually been waiting for someone to join me for a trip towards the top of this mountain," he said, "But I'm not sure about this other guy.." he continued, turning to the player on the ruined road and pointing at him with a limp wrist nonchalantly. Setting his sights on the unknown player, he ambled over to him lazily, stopping just a couple feet away. Leaning forward a bit he dared to try to poke the brown-haired man in the shoulder, "You should come with me too, okay?" he insisted, all the while wearing a rare impish smirk. DANCING THROUGH LIFE Just his luck; his noisy misstep had managed to attract another player to the rapidly growing gathering. He watched the intruder carefully, suspicious of people hiding in shrubbery, but he seemed friendly enough. Annoying, but friendly. In response to the bow, Icarus just crossed his arms. “Yeah, mountain quest here too,” he drawled, seeing little way out of it. Given they were all going the same way, he would be lumped together with them on the walk even if he didn’t party. Better to make it official and decrease the chance of any nasty surprises later. He leant away from the touch, trying not to scowl, but opened his menu and invited them both to a party. He had no intention of dragging out this quest any longer than necessary, and they could just as well do any talking while walking at the same time. “Come on, then. I don’t want to get stuck out here once the sun starts to set.”How long would it even take to get to the top? He’d already covered a decent amount of ground, though it was impossible to tell how much further the peak was. It had definitely looked much easier from the ground.
