granxgran , HOG WASH
He pressed a finger to his temple and tried to summon sort of zen, fleetingly wishing he’d taken up meditation at some point in the past.
Then again, he’d never anticipated he’d be suffering the indignity of being taught how to kill boars by a woman old enough to be his grandmother. Embarrassing enough to be outclassed by other players, but to be beaten by this old woman too? Hell, he really did need to start catching up fast.
Five boars. That was all he needed to complete the quest – easy enough, he hoped. He still wasn’t entirely sure why the lady had agreed to help him out, but he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. She’d muttered something about him paying her back later, but that was something he could worry about in the future, if they ever even bumped into each other again.
“So, you said this should be an easy quest?”
What had life come to, when he actually felt safer with an old woman by his side? He glanced sideways at her, gaze lingering on the mace in slight envy before he flashed her a smile. Best to keep her sweet, just in case he found himself in over his head.

Gran laughed at the kid and spun her mace in her hand, "What's the matter, bucko? Got a headache?"
She set the end of the cane against the ground and held the tip of it in her palm. For all purposes, it almost looked like a walking stick, only bigger. And more terrifying. She leaned against it and bent her back comically, imitating how most people would view an old lady like herself. She raised her free hand to point shakily at the kid, a dry cackle rising from her vocal chords.
"I said it would be an easy quest for me," Gran gave him a crooked smile and shrugged, "I never said some noob like you could do it proper."
She licked her lips and stared at the kid for a moment. She wasn't entirely certain as to why she had approached him, but she knew that she was thoroughly going to enjoy watching him flail about without a chance. She remained in her mock old lady stance and chortled a bit. Looking out over the farmer's field, she wondered exactly what the girl she had fought these hogs with the first time would think of this loser. And then, she saw one of the boars taking a bit of interest in them. They weren't quite in the aggro range just yet, but they were close enough that the mobs would look their way and snort. icarus

DANCING THROUGH LIFE He shifted his gaze to the boar slowly encroaching on them, eyeing it warily as he considered whether he really wanted to do this. Practicality, he assured himself, not cowardice. They looked a lot more unfriendly than the mobs he’d encountered so far. “Just trying to get into the zone,” he countered instead, trying not to let any of the reluctance show. If he was on his own, he’d probably have spent countless minutes more trying to prepare himself, or just wandered off entirely, but he didn’t want to open himself up to any more abuse. Pride already hurting, he squared his shoulders and drew his sword. “Watch me, sweetheart.” Flirting helped settle his nerves, even if he didn’t actually mean anything by it. He pushed himself to take a few more steps towards the boar, trying not to think too hard about why he was stupidly putting himself in harms way, and aggroed the damn monster. It didn’t waste any time; snorting and squealing, it pounded the ground and charged straight for him. He barely had time to drop into a defensive position before it was close enough to attack. Clumsily executing a horizontal slice before leaping out the way, he managed to just get out of the way. A hit, but not enough to kill it. He had a handful of heartbeats to appreciate his success before it wheeled back around and charged again. Another hit. And another. The fight dragged on for seemingly ever, each of his successful hits not powerful enough to do much damage to the beast. Overconfident, he lunged out as it came back around, only to be clipped by the charge and knocked unceremoniously onto his ass. Panicking, he thrust his sword upwards as it came back around, not managing to find his feet in time, only for it to explode in kaleidoscopic fragments around him. Well. It was dead. Perhaps not in the manner he’d hoped, but he’d managed to kill it without taking too much damage. Maybe he’d try and get Gran involved in the fight with the next one. Picking himself – and his dignity – up off the floor, he sauntered back to join her. No way of playing it to make it seem like he’d down well, so self-effacing humour seemed the way to go. “On second thoughts, perhaps you should show me how it’s done.”

Gran stood there, leaning against her cane-shaped weapon, an evil grin plastered to her face. This kid had guts, sure, but he was going to get himself killed at this rate. She clicked her tongue as he initiated combat with the boar. He dodged the first attack. Well, he wasn't a complete moron, at least. The boar's charge ended right in front of Gran, and she looked the mob straight in the eyes as her cloak billowed behind her from the wind that came off the halted attack. She almost wanted to hit the thing. However, she let it turn back around and focus its attack on the kid.
Watching the kid fumble about really made her want to fight. Every misstep made her fingers itch. She shook her head as the kid got smacked on to his ass. She nodded as he finally managed to kill the boar. He walked back over to her and she had the sudden urge to pat him on the head like a wounded puppy. She smiled instead, "You want me to show you how it's done?"
Standing up straight, Gran pulled her cane off the ground and twirled it before holding it in both hands, walking casually towards two boars in the distance, "First, you need a proper weapon, you little fruitcake."
She readied herself as both boars took their attention off the grass and focused on her. Her face grew serious as one of them charged at her, followed soon after by the other. With a huff, she swung her mace at the first one, laughing as it squealed and immediately vaporised into pixelated defeat. Bring the weapon behind her, she let it charge with a menacing green light, waiting until the last second for the second boar to be right in front of her. She launched the sword art, horizontal line of light cracking against the boar's head and shattering its body into particles of light. Flipping her cane back in her hand to use it as a pseudo-walking stick, she turned to face Icarus with an impish grin.
"Second," she continued from her earlier statement, "You need to know what you're capable of." icarus

DANCING THROUGH LIFE Shit. He didn’t even hold a candle to her. Impressed despite himself, he watched her effortlessly cleave down the two boars in far less time than it had taken to tangle with his one. She moved with a confidence that suggested practice with her “walking stick”, and encounters with monsters far above this one. In comparison, he’d be risking his life if he accidentally aggroed two of them while on his own. Irritated, again, by how useless he currently was, he determined to make the most of her pity teaching and take whatever he could get. He whistled through his teeth, long and low. “You’ve definitely got some moves, grandma.” He slipped up behind her, pleased to notice the quest tick upwards; three out of five tusks. All he needed was for Gran to repeat her little trick and he’d be able to get out of her and back to the far more pleasant task of collecting his rewards. “My mother always told me I was capable of anything,” he quipped, grinning. “I suspect she wasn’t thinking about boars at the time, though.”

Gran squinted her eyes at the kid. If she had done something amazing, she would've accepted the compliment, but as it was? She knew when someone was trying to get something out of her. She wasn't against sharing her knowledge, but a little respect would carry a long way with her. She laughed a bit and shook her head at Icarus, clicking her tongue in disapproval. She whipped her mace up from the ground towards Icarus' face. With a warm smile, she felt glee as the tip of her mace hovered inches away from the kid. She tilted her head to the side and closed her eyes.
"Well then, mister 'capable of anything'," Gran flourished her mace and practically fell into a sitting position, legs crossed, "Old grandma's legs are tired now. Perhaps you can take out a couple more boars for me? Don't worry, if you get in trouble, I'll be right here."
She waved her hand to shoo the child. she wasn't just going to kill the other two boars for him, no. That would be far too easy. She would let him get himself almost killed before she would do all of the work for him. Laying her mace across her crossed legs, she placed her hands on her knees, almost as if she was meditating. And then, she started to hum an old military tune she had been remembering. icarus

DANCING
THROUGH LIFE “Anything for you,” he promised, even if he wasn’t quite so keen on this turn of events. What had promised to be an easy victory, carried entirely by his new favourite old woman, now looked to require a lot more of his own effort. Still, he’d managed to kill that first one without his HP dropping too low. He just had to hope his luck held for the next two. Three more hits like that and he was in trouble. Cautiously creeping over to the next boar, he glanced around nervously. The first had been isolated, making him confident that he wouldn’t aggro a second, but these were clustered much closer together. Picking the one furthest from the main pack, he edged towards it. Only for two sets of beady little eyes to focus on him. Instantly aware that he’d made a terrible mistake, he almost tripped over his own feet in his abrupt turn around and headlong sprint back towards Gran. Not even checking to see how close they were behind him – not far, and quickly closing – he bolted straight at her, hoping she would step in and intercept. At least he’d managed not to scream.

Gran closed her eyes and sighed. The kid was hopeless. She weighed her options in her mind as she watched him creep ever closer to the boars. She could just end this now and reap the rewards. Or, she could enjoy herself as he faltered and flopped around like a fish out of water. She smiled as he aggro'd both boars he was approaching. She laughed as he ran away from them. She stood up as he ran towards her. With a sigh, Gran supposed it only made sense. She'd established herself as a good player now, and she was basically the safe zone. She stretched her arms in the air with a yawn as the boy neared her, boars following close behind. She cracked her knuckles before readying her mace.
"Fast way it is, then," she mumbled to herself, stepping to the side to allow Icarus to run past her. Her mace found itself connecting with one of the boars' jawbones. The swine shattered into shards of light as she pivoted on her heel, dragging the mace into the other mob with ease. It shattered as well, and she turned to give Icarus a pointed look, "You really shouldn't be fighting these things yet, you know. I only came out here to make sure you didn't die."
She wasn't lying, of course. She rarely lied. With a sigh, she eyed the counter on the amount of tusks they had gotten. One of those boars hadn't dropped a tusk. They were currently at four out of five. She sighed, realising the luck was pretty bad if not every boar dropped a tusk. She looked back at Icarus and laughed. There was another boar that had just spawned that was approaching them now. She put her weapon back into walking stick mode and gave Icarus a nasty smile, "Watch out behind you, dear." icarus

DANCING THROUGH LIFE He stopped to get his breath back, bending over and bracing his hands on his knees. The unmistakeable sound of the boars being slaughtered by his saviour brought the faintest smile of satisfaction curling around his lips, though he waited until he wasn’t desperately gulping in air to turn back and look at Gran instead. “I was trying for teamwork. Switching, isn’t it?” He tried for a grin, as aware as she was that she’d probably saved his life. “Thanks, though. I really appreciate the help.”
For once in his life, he wasn’t just spilling sweet words with no truth. Against all odds, he found he actually liked the woman in front of him. Perhaps he was still overexaggerating his gratitude, but hey, just because he liked her didn’t mean she wasn’t also useful to him. “I know.” He rubbed a hand against the back of his neck, trying to summon up some boyish charm. “I’m just so frustrated taking it slow. I missed the boat at the beginning, and now I’ve got so far to go to catch up everyone else.” Truth, though he was overplaying the martyr role. Anything else he had to say was interrupted by her acknowledgement of the boar behind him. He whirled, unsheathing his sword again, to face down the sixth boar. Fairly confident that Gran would step in if it looked like he was in serious trouble, his blade blazed into life as he engaged.

"Switch is the word, yes," Gran yawned a bit and shrugged, "I mean, teamwork saves peoples' asses, doesn't it?"
She laughed a bit at pointing out that she'd saved him. She smiled as he went on to explain that he was simply impatient. Silently, she wondered if he would ever be satisfied with not being the best. People like that were dangerous. Ambition was a thing meant for kings and heroes. It was not a tool for impatient brats. She would either have to humble him up now or cut him down later. For now, though, she decided she would gauge his personality and see just how far he was willing to go.
"You gotta be careful about going too fast, though, dear," she smiled and bobbed her head a bit, "If I didn't come with you today you would've died. Not taking it slow does what for you? Like I said, you have to know what you're capable of."
She nodded as he turned to fight the boar that had spawned. Looking to her side, she wondered if she could pass the time by killing a couple of other mobs. She decided against it, though. She would only interfere if another boar joined the fight. If the kid couldn't handle another one on one fight with the boar, he wasn't fit to be in this game. She started whistling her tune again as she watched him fight. icarus

DANCING THROUGH LIFE His sword flashed as he ducked and weaved through the combat, each successful hit whittling down the boar’s hp slowly. Tedious, and dangerous; he’d lost about a quarter of his hit points to one glancing blow last time, and he was starting to see why Gran was trying to lecture him about taking them on at his level. Not that it would stop him chasing the sun; he would just make sure to always ally himself with someone competent and let them pull him to success. Diving out of the way of a particularly close charge, he hit the ground and rolled, streaking lines of green across his beginner gear. It was on him before he was ready and swiped him full across the front, sending him reeling straight back to the floor, wind knocked out of him. “Ouch,” he snarled, stumbling back to his feet before it got back to him again. “Just die already, won’t you?”

Gran wondered what kind of tea she was going to have when she got back to town. Maybe another cup of that Earl Gray that girl had managed to whip up. She really needed to look into the cooking skill at some point. If she could manage to make her own teas and treats, she wouldn't have to rely on someone else to do it. She stretched and let out a yawn, considering all the possible mixtures that she should try out when she got the skill. Maybe she could try out some-...
Her thoughts were cut short as she watched a second boar spawn in behind Icarus. She muttered a curse under her breath and bolted off towards the mob. The boar had just taken notice of Icarus and was about to charge him when her mace connected with its rear end. It let out a squeal and dissipated. With a scowl, she looked at the quest counter. It ticked upwards as the boar's final pieces disappeared. She shot a glance over at Icarus who was struggling with his enemy. She sighed and twirled her cane-mace. She deftly stepped past him and slapped the thing with the end of her weapon, causing it to explode even without a sound.
"We're done here," Gran said concisely, turned to walk back towards the NPC that had given them the quest, "Anymore of watching you fight things is going to drive me nuts."
As she walked towards the NPC, her mind wandered a little bit. It snapped back into focus when she looked back at Icarus and saw his sword, "Kid, you really need to get a better weapon. Honestly, it's the only thing holding you back right now. That, and your overconfidence. You need to get a better sense of that, too." icarus

DANCING THROUGH LIFE The boar behind him shattered into light before he could even recognise its existence. Blinking as the combat abruptly ended, flooded with adrenalin but left with no avenue to expend it, he was left holding his sword and blinking dumbly at the space it used to occupy. Oddly disappointment that he couldn’t finish the fight, he sheathed his sword and hid his discomfort behind a brilliant grin. “Sweet,” he exclaimed, eyeing the ‘Quest Complete’ flag with considerable satisfaction. Just the rewards to go pick up now. “And hey, look, I levelled up.”Satisfaction swept through him. Gear, COL and a level, plus the benefits of having the contact for future challenges. For the first time, he felt like he was beginning to achieve something, and not just living in a state of perpetual embarrassment about his abilities. “New sword, got it. I’ll probably be able to afford a decent one with the quest reward money.” That his sword and his ego were the only things she commented on made him suspect it might even be a compliment. “Can I add you to my friends list? You really helped me out today, and I’d love to return the favour some day.”Or, you know, increase his debt.
