August chewed on her jam bread with distaste. If she was back at home, she could easily make this food item and it would taste infinitely better, in her completely bias point of view. She had managed to get the cooking crafting skill now, but her ability to cook was still extremely limited compared to the real world. It was annoying to say the very least.
She was wandering around one of the streets of the NPC marketplace. There were some player stalls too, but they this area was mostly heavily populated with the stores and basic equipment that had been available since the beginning of the game. August had wandered through here millions of times now, mostly to just observe what was offered for sale. Other players told her that item prizes from quests and player made equipment was of better quality than the stuff offered in these stalls, so was there really a point of actually buying anything here?
Regardless of this advice, it was more crowded here than usual. August normally had enough room to weave in and out of the crowd, but today she was bumping into everyone and being pushed along with the general tide of people. She resorted to holding her bread over her head to avoid hitting anyone with it. She didn’t want to eat bread that had touched a bunch of people and she was sure no one wanted jam smeared on their clothes.
Seeing an opening in the crowd, August tried her best to push her way through it. The crowd was moving at an extremely slow pace, something she wouldn’t have minded if there weren’t people pushing her from behind to move faster. Side-stepping around a couple that had stopped to admire a stall, August took a small leap into the opening in the sea of players.
She managed to land there fine, but a moment later someone much larger than her suddenly turned around into her. With a wince, August stepped backwards from the confrontation and promptly bumped into someone else, “oof- sorry,” she breathed out as she regained her balance and turned around to face them.

Horus was staring intently at a new sword until he was bumped in the rear, his head flying forward and colliding with the shoulder of the NPC running the stall. He reacted slightly and offered a generic "Hey, be careful there!" response. Horus apologized without thinking that the guy wasn't even real.
Still, his head was a little sore. Pain in SAO wasn't anything like in real life, but it still smarted headbutting someone right in the shoulder.
Horus turned, still holding the sword he'd considered buying. He made sure not to move too far still holding it; the last thing he wanted was to become a criminal in SAO so early into the game, when Horus had no experience.
Horus turned to face the player who had hit him; she was small, smaller than him, with lightly colored hair. “oof- sorry,” she'd said, but Horus thought little of it. It was a crowded street, and things like this were bound to happen. Plus, she seemed genuinely apologetic, not just for the sake of a formality.
"It's no problem," Horus waved off. "I should be moving along anyway...I don't think I can afford this sword." Horus re-examined the blade in his hands; it was curved and not very intricate in design, but it wasn't a rusted piece of crap like the one strapped to his back. He solemnly set it back down at the stall, nodding at the NPC who stood silently.
"Are you okay?" he asked her.

“I’m good!” she promised with a thumbs up, “it’s rather crowded. I’m sad to say you’re not the first person I’ve run into since I got here.” She eyed the crowd warily before bringing her attention back to Horus with a smile. He didn’t seem too upset, which was good. She wasn’t really in the mood to argue with anyone, not that she was ever in the mood to argue with anyone.
Looking at the sword Horus was also eyeing, August let out a small chuckle, “it looks a lot better than the one I have.” Most swords looked better than the one she had. The beginning equipment wasn’t exactly the best in quality but it was certainly cheap enough to get by.
“It’s alright,” August commented as she took another bite out of her jam and bread. There was an awkward pause as she chewed the food carefully and then swallowed it before continuing her sentence, “I can’t afford it either. Stuff here isn’t cheap and it’s not the best quality. The good gear is in the other towns where players craft them.” She took another bite out of her bread and got onto her toes to look above the crowd.
“I’ve been out that way before, but only a few times. Traveling through the combat-enabled areas make me a bit wary. I’m a tad scared of dying. But, I suppose any sane person would be.” August wouldn’t consider herself cowardly by any means, but there was a difference between having to be courageous in the moment and going headfirst into a situation where all of the factors and probability were unknown. She didn’t mind leading the charge, but in these moments where she was nowhere near equipped enough to defend herself.
If the man wasn’t going to buy that sword, was he looking for a cheaper one? There was a pretty standard sword sold at most stalls that new players had; it was the easiest one to buy to replace the one first given to people in the game. August had it, but she hadn’t used it on anyone or anything yet.

"In that case...think I'll pass for now," he smiled, turning away from it. "I'm still really unfamiliar with how this game works. It's my first RPG, so pardon if I don't understand all the rules."
Horus took a moment to size the stranger up; she was new, too, but maybe not as new as him. The sword strapped flush to her body was not rusted; not particularly fancy, but certainly better than his own blade. He could easily have mistaken it for one of the blades sold on this street. Horus had a strange feeling on the back of his neck that this girl could kick his ass.
He liked her already.
Horus extended a handshake towards the stranger. "I'm Horus. Nice to meet you."
The street continued to bustle around them; Horus suspected he wasn't the only player coming out of the woodworks a little late. The shock had finally settled, the reality of their situation creeping into their collective consciousness. People were starting to not only wonder how to survive, but how to arm themselves. He was sure this level of vigor would not last forever; hell, maybe even Horus might give up at some point and resign himself to survive until someone else cleared this game. But for now, Horus planned to fight.

“Same!” August chirped in excitement, “I don’t play video games in general. A good friend gave me the game for us to play together and that’s how I got stuck here. There was a pretty high learning curve for me.” It was nice to hear that someone else was in her situation. Most people hadn’t admitted they had no idea how things worked either. She was learning, but not quickly enough to really be able to help anyone else out.
August put the bread into her mouth and placed her own hand in Horus’s handshake. She then placed her other hand on the other side to sandwich Horus’s hand before shaking it. Letting go, August picked the bread out of her mouth so that she could speak. “I’m August. It’s nice to meet you as well.”
She took another bite out of the bread and smiled. “I apologize beforehand if I get any jam on you. People keep running into to me. Is there anything in particular you’re looking for? I’ve wandered around here enough to know the general direction of where things are.” She did a lot of window shopping before getting the courage to go outside and do quests to actually buy things.
If he was looking for weapons or shields, August wasn’t going to be much help. But there was one area where she excelled at pointing people in the right direction. “If there’s any type of food you’re interested in, I know whether or not the the NPCs sell them. They’re not as good as the player made ones, but finding those are a bit harder to do.” She also had the possibility to cook things as well, but August hadn’t tried it out very much.
Maybe she could open up a bakery here too. She would have to do it on her own, without her parent’s help. But, August was confident that she could manage it, especially if it was something low scale and she worked only on commission so she had time to go do other things instead of having to man a stall for several hours a day. "That would be great, actually. Thanks August!" Horus grinned. This girl was offering to show him the good places to eat, at least in the Town of Beginnings. If she'd been to the next town over, maybe he could learn a couple of those in advance. If he loved one thing, it was food.
Horus was honestly surprised to meet someone so outwardly friendly. Most of the people here were either naturally somber or in a bout of depression due to their circumstances. Horus had a knack for seeing things on the bright side, but even then it took longer than he'd ever like to admit to come to grips with it all. But food was a universal constant of glum-be-gone, and he was damned sure he'd take advantage of it.
"Would you want to add me to your friends list? I'd like to have as many friendly faces as possible, you know?" he smiled. He swiped the air with his right hand, opening the menu. He searched her name and sent her the request, waiting for the menu to appear in front of her.

“Awesome!” she cheered, “what kinds of foods do you like? There are some places that sell specific foods like ramen or fried meats. Other places specialize in different types of foods like baked goods.” The last two words of that sentence carried a little hint of saltiness in her tone of voice. “I bet I could make better ones though,” she muttered in addition before turning to point down a street a little further up. “Most of the food stuffs is over there,” August added as she popped the remaining piece of jam bread into her mouth.
She noticed that the he NPCs made it a little easier to shop by placing a cluster of the food over in one section so people wouldn’t have to wander through swords to get to fruits. It made a bit of sense huddling everything there, but there were still a few rouge stands that just popped up wherever they pleased.
Oh, a friend request? She only had two people on her list and they were both her real life friends that got stuck here with her. Adding some new people wouldn’t hurt. August wouldn’t know when it might come in handy to need to a questing partner or if some other situation came up. “Of course!” she excitedly hit the accept button and laughed. “You’re the first person I didn’t know in real life to be added to this.”
Maybe she should follow the same thought process that he had and add the people she came into contact with. Problem was, August was never really good at figuring out whether people actually ever wanted to see her again. Some people loved being around her, others avoided her after meeting for the first time. It was really a coin toss and she could never really call it correctly.

Horus' smile faltered slightly. He'd added someone from real life, but he'd never accepted the response. Horus worried about what that meant, but shook the feeling off.
"Let's start with baked goods," he prompted, gesturing down the street. He took his first few steps towards where August had pointed. A stalls had sprung up down there, and Horus could smell the delicious breads and meats cooking down there. His col felt heavy in his inventory...maybe if he just...
No, bad Horus! Equipment first, delicacies later.
That being said, he couldn't stop his feet from pulling him further down the street, through the hustle and bustle of the day's traffic in the market. The closer he got to the food, the less people he seemed to run into, the fewer people mulling about. Everyone was more concerned with the equipment, which was understandable.
Maybe Horus would buy just one thing. "Treat yo self," he thought, though it carried little weight depending on how much these goods might cost.
He arrived at a small stand overflowing with muffins and loaves of crisp, warm bread. Horus wondered if SAO let food get cold, or if it would always be piping hot out of your inventory. That would be fabulous, albeit unlikely. Still, a guy could dream.
"Oh my God. I'm in Heaven."

August’s upper lip twice for a second, but she put on a smile and gladly showed Horus the way towards the NPC baked goods. She had just come from that way, finishing up the piece of jam bread she had purchased a few minutes before. It didn’t hurt to go back for seconds, even if the quality of food reminded her more of her nine year old self’s food’s quality level.
She allowed him to lead and followed closely behind. At first the task had been difficult with the density of people with August making ‘oof’ noises whenever someone bumped into her just a little bit too hard for her liking. Eventually, the crowd did begin to noticeably disband and allow more room for people to actually walk around comfortably.
Her feet came to grinding halt when Horus stopped. She had been looking at something else across the crowd and almost ran into him again. Fortunately, the pink-haired women caught herself this time and simply pivoted so that she ended up right next to him. Peering over at the stall, August couldn’t help but breathe out a huff from her nose.
She wasn’t usually boastful, but hearing someone comment on these subpar baked goods (she would know considering she had tried them all) as being appetizing enough for the kingdom upstairs was amusing. She leaned in close to Horus and cupped a hand over his ear before whispering in it, “they sadly don’t taste as good as they look.”

A loud growl erupted from Horus' stomach. He was hungry, but he already had food in his inventory. He decided not to deal with the vendors at August's recommendation.
"I wish someone could make food like in the real world...I loved food. That's the thing I'm going to miss most in here," he complained. "Maybe investing in that cooking skill might not be such a bad idea...maybe I could figure something out."
Horus stepped away from the stall slowly, regretfully. He wasn't planning to start eating his own food in the middle of the street, but it was getting progressively more tempting. "Oh well, that's for another day. Thanks for showing me where these are, though, August! It's better to know they're here in case I cave."
Horus stretched hands high over his head, his back tensing up a little as he tried ignoring the sounds emitting from his stomach.

“It’s a pretty disappointing skill if you actually know your way around a kitchen,” August sighed as she placed a hand on her cheek. She had tried it out before and the actual cooking portion was so boring. Need to cut something? Just tap it with a knife instead of actually taking the time to slice. She supposed it did save precious time that could be used for other things, but where was the fun? “The system here simplifies everything. You somehow need an entire bag of sugar to bake a singular cake. It’s a tad ridiculous if you know how much sugar actually goes into a cake.”
She nodded with a smile in response. “Absolutely no problem! The food is still bland, but it’s less bland than the cheap stuff you find in the front of the market.” It was a tad bit more expensive too, but that was the price to pay to not eat bread that had the same texture as sawdust.
August couldn’t help but chuckle at the noises Horus’s stomach was making. “You know, if you have enough money there to buy me the ingredients, I could give it a go trying to make something here,” she proposed as she vaguely waved towards the stall full of baked goods.
She hadn’t attempted to make much yet, but it couldn’t have been too difficult to figure out what ingredients she would need to bake whatever it was Horus was interested in eating. She didn’t have a high enough skill level to make anything too complicated yet, but a simple muffin or something along those lines shouldn’t be too difficult for her to figure out.

Horus frantically waved his hands in front of him. "No no no, I couldn't ask that of you! You've already been so kind, thank you." Horus bowed to her in the middle of the street; he was fairly new to Japan, but this is something they still did, right? He'd seen it on TV, so he certainly hoped he didn't look like a total ass.
"Plus, I don't really have much money. I'm saving up for gear so I can get ready for the Boss Raid whenever it's discovered," he said, scratching his cheek absent-mindedly. "I'm only Level 2, but I'm planning on joining the front lines as soon as possible."
Horus looked August up and down; at a first glance, she didn't seem like much of a fighter, but looks could be deceiving. Especially in SAO, where combat ability was determined by stats more than physical ability. It was a fair system, allowing players of all sizes and ages to be able to play on even footing so to speak. He wondered if she planned on fighting.
"Maybe that sounds crazy, but..." he paused. He was doing that thing where he shared too much again. "Nah, ignore me. I do that sometimes."

“What?” August asked as she titled her head to the side to follow suit of Horus’s bow, “I haven’t been that nice, have I?” She was just acting like how she usually does. It wasn’t anything too special and certainly not something that she needed to be thanked for. She nodded in understanding at his reason for not spending money. August had similar goals as well. “I’m doing the same actually, but I’ve been going on tons of quests in an effort to save up.” There wasn’t any dipping of toes into the pool when it came to quests. She decided to just start doing them one day and had been on a continuous roll ever since.
The frontlines sounded dangerous, but at the same time it was the best place for August to go to protect people. That’s what she wanted to do and those who followed suit were in less of a danger than those who first walked in blind. She was still beating around the idea of whether she was going to head up there herself, so she decided against commenting on that particular aspect. “I heard it’s dangerous,” she chose to say instead, “and it’s all unknown territory, so bringing good gear would definitely be more ideal than splurging a little on food.”
Her eyes followed Horus’s has he gave her the look down. “Do I have something on me?” she asked as she lifted up one of her sleeves to better inspect it. August thought she had been exceptionally careful about getting jam on her, but maybe she failed at her goal. She didn’t see anything, so August chose to ignore it.
“Nah, I don’t think they’re crazy. It’s a commendable goal. We can go questing sometime if you need to level up,” she offered with a smile. Having too many dependable people to call upon to help clear out quests was never a bad thing in her eyes.

"I would love that!" Horus grinned. Most of the people he'd encountered since being trapped in SAO were too...brooding. Icarus was great, and Raiken was certainly helpful. But dealing with someone like August was...lighter? He wasn't sure if that was the right adjective to describe her, but it seemed to fit. Her personality wasn't pulling him down, it was pushing him up. SAO could certainly use more of that.
"I was wanting to do Mistletoe, one of the holiday quests. Apparently, there's a special Large Nepent that's growing mistletoe instead of normal fruits, and we need to go take it out and bring back the mistletoe. Want to come?" It was sure to be a tricky quest; there were bound to be more than just the one creature mulling about, but with August here, he was sure they could handle it themselves. And if not, they would run! Easy as that.

Mistletoe? August hadn’t gotten a good look at the newly released quests yet. She wasn’t even sure where to look for those kinds of things. Her method of obtaining quests was to just stumble across them and it had been working well for her so far. It never hurt to try something new and track one down though, did it? “Sure! Lead the way if you know where to go.”
August had also never run into a Nepent before and certainly not a large one. She thought about what kind of creature they must have been if they grew fruits. Something plant-like was the idea she decided to keep in her head. Although, if it was growing mistletoes that would make it easier to spot. No need to chase down a bunch of different Nepents if they could easily spot it from a distance.
She allowed Horus to start walking first as August had no idea where they were going. The walk hopefully wasn’t going to be too far. It wasn’t like she had other plans, but she also did not want to inconvenience Horus by having him lead her around all day. If it was too far of a travel they could have always regroup a different day when there were more daylight hours in the sky.
