Pax hefted his shield up and wondered just how many people were starting to leave the towns. His friend had something about players just now realising the importance of powering up and getting gear. No way could someone be stupid enough to stay in town that long and not at least do one of the simple quests. It boggled his mind.
The boar that he'd been fending off with just his shield charged him again. He practically smacked it with the smooth edges of the shield. It looked like an attack, but registered as a blocking maneuver. He found that kind of amusing. He pulled his sword out of its sheath as the boar was staggered. It shook its ugly little head and focused back on Pax. He didn't let it attack, though. A couple swipes from his sword, and the boar shattered into bits. This was definitely a lot easier than the last time he fought these boars. He smiled to himself and sheathed his sword. He leaned against a nearby tree and started typing out a party request to the general public, asking if anyone would like assistance climbing the mountain. He might as well do a quest or two while he wasn't doing anything.
"Maybe I'll meet someone interesting," he mused to himself as he sent out the beacon. @open Quest

| | She’d been watching Pax for longer than she would admit. She’d been intrigued at the way he’d casually played with the boar, toying with it like a kitten, and had watched with admiration as he’d lazily shattered into fragments when he’d grown tired with it. When he’d then gone on to throw up a quest beacon, she’d jumped at the chance to do one with someone who wouldn’t be as useless at dealing with the monsters as her.
Leaving it a few moments, so it didn’t look like she’d been stalking him, she eventually wandered over to join him, accepting the party invite. “Hey,” she greeted, words soft and shy, still not entirely confident of her place here. “Were you doing the, uh, heights of glory quest? It would be nice to have some company.” Despite the suspiciously easy quest description, she didn’t really want to be stuck outside the safe zone with just herself to rely on. |

As the beacon went out, he stretched a bit. He was prepared to wait for hours on end before anyone even-
Pax almost jumped at the voice. He turned to look at the newcomer. A girl. He sighed and flipped the visor on his helmet up, showing off a beaming smile, "Uh, hi! Yes, I was planning on doing the mountain hike quest. I didn't expect someone to respond to my beacon so soon . . ."
He frowned and squinted his eyes at her, eyebrows furling slightly. He'd only just sent out the beacon, hadn't he? Had she just been standing around watching him? He swept the thought from his mind and just smiled again, flipping his visor back down and opening up his menu. He sent her a party invite with a firm nod, "My name's Paxilon. Most people have taken to calling me Pax, though. I don't mind being your escort up the mountain. It's a good simple quest most of the time, and it's a good time waster."
With that, he started up the trail. He hadn't talked to anyone in a while, and he was quite looking forward to a good conversation. Then again, he didn't mind the quiet beauty of the mountain, either. zero

| | “Sorry, I was watching you fight the boar and…” Zero looked down, embarrassed, as he made it clear that he found her rapid appearance odd. Staying hidden for a while just to make it look like stumbling across him was a coincidence seemed even stranger though, especially if he’d ended up spotting her anyway.
At least he seemed willing to let her join anyway, despite the circumstances. She tentatively accepted the party invite, “Thanks.” She smiled at him, appreciating the kindness he was doing by trying to help out new players. The ease with which he’d dispatched the boar made it clear he probably didn’t need to do the quest himself. “I mean, the quest sounds easy, the NPC didn’t mention any monsters, but I’m still a bit nervous about being out here on my own. I’m not very good at killing the monsters yet.” A mixture of nerves and embarrassment was making her ramble, and she inwardly sighed. His opinion of her probably wasn’t getting any better. |

Pax stopped for a moment and sighed. So, she had been watching him. He wondered to himself just how he was supposed to go about this. He rubbed his hand against the top of his chest plate instinctively, thinking it over as he began walking again. As he heard her thank him he turned around and tilted his head a bit at her, "You're welcome, I guess?"
As he listened to her talk, her started to smile. She was pretty new, but she'd probably get better at this. The fact that she'd paid attention to the lack of mention of monsters in the NPC dialogue attested to that. He laughed a bit and gave her a firm nod, "That's right. I've found that some of the quests do actually passively increase the spawn rate of some zones. Like that forest over there."
He pointed off to the distant forest, his confident smile hidden under his visor, "There's an escort quest in those woods that makes Nepents spawn that don't usually spawn like that when you're in there."
He gave an exaggerated sagely nod and then laughed at himself, "From an info broker, that information would cost like, twenty col! Here I am just handing it out."
He stopped and a serious air came about him as he realised something was wrong. He looked sideways at Zero and raised his eyebrow. She was uncomfortable? Curious. What could he have possibly done to make her so? Or maybe she was thinking he didn't need her and would throw her off the cliff at some point if he got bored of her. He frowned. With a sigh, he reached out to put his hand on her shoulder, flipping up his visor to give her a soft, reassuring smile, "Hey. Don't worry about anything right now. Just relax, pretend like we're taking a hike together. Like a date or something. You're with one of the strongest players in the game right now; we have nothing to worry about! Now come on! If we make it to the top soon, we'll get to see the sunset!"
He flipped his visor back down with an amused chuckle and started walking up the path again. He wasn't lying about being able to see the sunset. That was probably the only reason he ever did this quest with other people anymore. zero

| | “Oh really?” It was a useful bit of information. It meant she couldn’t just accept quests she thought were in safe-ish areas; if the quests themselves caused more monsters to spawn, she might end up in over her head if she decided to chance it and try the quest without really meeting the requirements.
She’d been lost in her own world thinking about it, so she didn’t register him approaching and half jumped as a hand landed on her shoulder, though it was quickly apparent he was just trying to be nice. She had to admit, just seeing his face made her feel more comfortable. Forcing herself not to blush at the idea that this could easily be a date, she seized on the second half of his comment instead. “The strongest? Really?” It was a bold claim to make when they’d started with ten thousand players. Was there some way of checking? “Are you one of the players going into the labyrinth?
She’d heard nothing more than rumours that players were searching for the first boss, but if he claimed he was one of the best, he must be one of them, right? How exciting! “It’ll be nice to see the sunset,” she admitted, glancing around her. “Everything in this game is so pretty.”

Pax nodded with a laugh. Of course, there was a kind of cap on how strong a player could be on the first level, and he wasn't the only one who had reached it. Technically, he told himself, he was not lying about being one of the strongest. When she asked about the labyrinth he didn't laugh, he only nodded. They were about to reach an area that flattened out a little bit before continuing on upwards into the mountain via a rabbit trail surrounded by little bushes. It was a kind of lower lookout spot that some players would go to for picnics and the like. When they reached the little clearing he stopped and sighed.
"One of the main reasons I'm helping people do these quests is to try to get more players ready for the labyrinth," he recalled running through those elaborate mazes in the beta. Dying was quite common for anyone who didn't take it seriously. He turned his head towards Zero, "So far, most people are either too scared or too weak to enter the damn thing. Don't get me wrong, the labyrinth is scary and difficult, but . . ."
As he continued to speak he started moving through the tiny little trail covered in briar bush-type plants, his armor swathing a large path through the prickly flora, "We can't stay on this floor forever. If we don't start moving, everyone's going to get complacent and then nothing will get done."
His smile was warm as he pushed another thorny plant out of the way. He remembered coming up here the first time with that crazy woman. It was definitely the best view for this entire floor, and he was excited to have someone with him who would appreciate that. zero

| | “Oh!” The view surprised her, so even when Pax stopped she continued, glancing around her. “It really is pretty.”
She was glad when he elaborated on the labyrinth, hungry for any news of it. While some people had already dedicated themselves to being the support crew to help the top players get through, Zero wasn’t quite ready to give up on trying to join those elite few. The cap certainly helped; those that had rushed off to begin with were simply unable of getting too far ahead, forcibly kept back by the system. A sadistic way to make sure there was always a decent chance of dying? If not, she supposed overly grinding the first level would be the way to go, unless the experience from the mobs dropped off to zero.
“I agree,” she murmered, following the trail he made through the underbrush. “I know it’s dangerous and people are scared, but I can’t imagine being trapped here forever. What if they never find out how to free us? I can’t spend my whole life stuck on the first floor of a videogame.”

"Pretty indeed," Pax muttered almost to himself as he pushed aside another bush. Only looking forward, it looked like nothing but dirt and thorns. Looking around, however, showed that their vantage point already showed a decent portion of the floor around the mountain. Tolbana and Horunka were visible from where they were. If they continued on the path Pax was taking, it would wrap around the side of the giant rocky landmass and reveal the Town of Beginnings off in the distance. The top of the mountain was the best part, though. It was a perfect spot to sit and eat some food. A nice picnic area. Pax started humming a bit at the thought of being able to relax finally. He had so much momentum with questing and fighting that he'd not rested in about a week. He tried humming out the tune to one of his favourite RPG games. He was terribly off key, however.
As if in response to his annoying humming, a boar came rampaging out of some nearby overgrowth, squealing and careening towards Zero. Pax frowned and decided to try out one of the new abilities he had picked up. He mustered up all of the power he could into his voice and directed it all towards the swine in a bellowing, "HEY!"
The boar immediately switched course, tusks suddenly pointed towards Pax. He laughed as it squealed towards him in anger. Was it really that easy to use the Lure ability? He smiled and shook his head, casually batting the boar aside with his round shield. He brought his sword to bear and playfully swatted the boar a couple of times with his sword. He sighed as it exploded into shattered pixels and looked at Zero, "Really. You can't go squealing at a lady like that. Bad manners."
"Don't worry," Pax laughed again, "We won't be stuck on this first floor for long. We'll probably beat this game before people on the outside can figure out how to work the Nervegear tech. I mean, we are a lot of gamers stuck in a game, after all." zero
