August made a dissatisfied face at the unlit lanterns as she slowly made her way down the street. Her footsteps were different this time, consisting of mostly shuffling and lacking the natural bounce she usually carried. She knew was in town and the mechanics didn’t allow combat in here, but sometimes fear wasn’t always so easy to quell. It sounded silly for a grown women to admit she was scared of the dark, but she simply wasn’t used to it. It was rarely ever dark in her city; everyone lived so close to one another that there were hardly ever spaces where street lights or lights from people’s houses weren’t visible.
It was an unsettling feeling, looking out into the distance and not seeing anything besides black. Gulping, she skittered off to the side of the street and decided to walk there instead of in the middle. It was so odd not seeing other people around; usually there was another player or two wandering around as well. It wasn’t even that late at night yet as the sun had only set a half hour ago.
She hadn’t ever been here this late in the evening. August tried her best to return to the Town of Beginnings before it got too late as she was the most comfortable there. There was probably an inn somewhere in this town too, but she had no idea where it was or how to find it in the dark.
Her fingers touched the unlit lanterns lightly as she made her way down the street. If she had a match or something similar she could light them herself, but sadly her pockets were empty. “Just a bit further?” she mumbled to herself as she looked head. There had to be houses or something eventually, right? All of these closed shops she was walking by weren’t really providing her any source of light either.
There weren’t any NPC shops down this way that she could see. They mostly appeared to be player run shops, which would explain why they closed at this point. People probably had other things they wanted to do with their evenings other than sit around in a store all night.

It took him a while, but Domino had finally managed to accept the circumstance of what he had been given, and completed with his own personal preparations to deal with the challenges he would inevitably face ahead. He had been one of the many that had joined the game on opening day, being quite a fan of competitive MMOs like these, especially when the experience of game play emulated reality through the Nervegear. He had so much expectations for his experience here to be unforgettable, and in ways that Domino never expected to, it was just that. The announcement of the game's nature was an image that would forever be etched in Domino's mind. Unlike a large number of the players, Domino had opted to remain in the Town of Beginnings, not because he was scared of the circumstances, but because he was cautious of it. He familiarized himself with the game mechanics as much as he could, and how certain aspects of his livelihood would change in regards to the game. And now, he had finally set out. He was late behind others, of course, but he was focused more on surviving, than making it to the top.
Getting to the top still had its appeals, though.
Whatever the case, Domino embarked in his first quest, knowing that this was the backbone of the game, and the main method of progressing through the levels of the game's system. Higher levels meant better stats, and better stats meant higher chances of survival. Besides, Domino himself could not deny still that Aincrad was still an interesting place. It was a whole new world, offering entirely new and different experiences. No harm in trying to gain as much of them as he could while he was here, right? Starting small, of course, would be a given, and that was why he was here in this town, at that very evening, wandering down the eerily empty street, staring up at the unlit lamp posts.
His task was simple, and that was simply to activate the lamp posts to provide illumination on the path before him. And it seemed that he wasn't alone in the task. As soon as he had activated one, he caught hint of another doing just the same thing, to the lamppost adjacent to his own. He blinked, golden eyes staring at the smaller female. Was she doing the exact same quest?

August’s attention was quickly turned to her left when she saw a mark indicating an NPC was around pop up suddenly. They weren’t actual players, but any company was good enough at this point. Trotting over, August didn’t manage to get a single word in before the quest menu popped up. Oh, so this was why the lanterns were all dead. She gladly clicked accept and was handed a packet of matches. She had originally hoped for these, but now August was thinking that one of those plastic fire starters she could easily click would have been more ideal.
She made her way back to the same lantern she had been standing under earlier and lifted herself up on her tip toes. August wasn’t short, if anything she was taller than most other females her age. Even so, she was having trouble reaching the center where the light was.
If these lanterns had been on the ground this would have been a different story, but they were perched up higher than she remembered. “Maybe they had a festival and had to move them up higher so they wouldn’t get damaged or som-” she had turned to look back down the way she came and noticed someone else standing there.
She stood absolutely still for a moment with wide eyes, trying her best not to utter a sound. August was slowly learning that she needed to be a lot more perceptive about her surroundings. This other player was not the first to suddenly appear out of nowhere. She hadn’t really minded it in other situations since they usually made themselves known and it was daytime outside, but he was simply standing there in the dark without uttering a word.
“Ummm,” August trailed off as she recollected her thoughts, “do you need matches?” She held out her box and arm’s length away towards Domino. “I can’t reach these. They moved them up way higher than usual tonight.” Maybe August should have asked if they were working on the same quest, but since there was no one else around and the quest only just triggered for her, she figured it was safe to assume that he was working on the same one as well.

Well, this was a rather awkward scene, wasn't it? For a good few seconds, the two simply eyed each other. Domino pondered whether he should say something, or simply move on and continue with what he was doing, but she spoke up then, completely throwing that plan out the window. "Do you need matches?" Domino blinked, golden eyes rolling down to gaze at the small box for a moment, before shaking his head. Reaching into his pocket then, he pulled out his own set of matches, holding it up lightly to show it to her. "Uhm, I already have them," he replied. Of course he would. He had already activated the quest marker earlier, and was already in the process of completing it. Or at least, he had just started to. Well, it did seem that they were doing the same quest together, hm? She would continue then, talking about the elevated height of the lanterns they were supposed to light. He blinked, before raising his own chin to look up at the lantern. Could he even reach it on his own? He frowned, gritting his teeth behind closed lips as he contemplated reaching up to test. It would certainly be embarrassing for him if he couldn't. It looked as if he could reach it, but barely. Even then, that was just the bottom of the lantern. How was he supposed to reach the lantern itself to light it? He tilted his head lightly "What the hel--" he paused mid-curse as he realized something, before turning back to the girl beside him. He frowned slightly, and averted his gaze as he cleared his throat. "Do you wanna work together?" he inquired, before bringing his hand up, pointing at the lanterns in indication to what he was referring to. And right after, he would pat his shoulder, a gesture that he believed sufficient in explaining his proposed method in getting the lanterns lit. august

The NPC providing them with two different sets of matches would have certainly made the quest go faster if either of them could actually reach the lanterns. Unable to do so, it didn’t seem as if it had mattered if they were given fully lit torches instead. She eyed the surrounding area for something she could use. Maybe one of the store fronts had a ladder or something that August could borrow momentarily. It was difficult enough to see anything without light, so August decided against wandering around further to look for something one of them could stand on.
“We might be able to make a ladder of sorts with the nearby trees, but that’s probably too time consuming.” The clock would probably tick away until dawn by the time the two of them were done constructing their own ladder. August had no idea how to make one and she wasn’t counting on random strangers she encountered to know how to build sturdy ones either.
“I have no idea why they’re so high tonight. Usually these lanterns aren’t this much of a fuss,” she confessed. Lighting lanterns at eye level would have been such a simpler task. She should have picked a different day to come wandering through here at night.
Craning her neck upwards to look at the lantern, August threw the box of matches up in the air slightly and caught them again. “Well,” she sighed as she looked back over at Domino and grinned, “we’ll figure something out. I’m not really inclined to give up.”
She was about to ask if he had any ideas because she was fresh out of them until Domino asked if they wanted to work together and made the gesture towards his shoulder. She squinted at him in silence for a few moments as she tried to determine what he was talking about. “I’m not sure what that means, but you have an idea, right?” she asked quizzically.

“I have no idea why they’re so high tonight. Usually these lanterns aren’t this much of a fuss,” Domino blinked, before simply reacting with a light shrug. "I wouldn't know," he replied, suggesting that this was his first night in this town. That was the truth of it, the man only having recently left the safety of the Town of Beginnings after familiarizing himself fully with the game's systems -- as long as that took. He looked up at the lanterns again, before down at the girl before him. Whatever the case, it seemed that their little ordeal had done nothing to faze her confidence, as she gave him a grin and a declaration of war against their challenge. That challenge being, of course, their lack of height. Following his suggestion, then, she would simply stare at him, and squint her eyes. He blinked, before cocking an eyebrow as he stared back. What was with that expression? Did she really not understand what he was trying to suggest? Her words that followed after confirmed his fear, and he released a light sigh, pulling his lips to the corner for a bit, before straightening himself. "If you climb or sit upon my shoulder, it shouldn't be a problem for you reaching the lanterns," he explained once more, verbally this time, as he raised his right hand once again to point at the lanterns. "We'd be able to clear the 10 lanterns quickly then." In his mind, it seemed to be the perfect plan. It was easy, did not require much skills in play, quick and convenient. She looked light enough for him to carry easily, and their combined height would definitely be more than good enough to reach the lanterns. august

“Oh!” What a genius idea. August would have never suggested it; people did not like being randomly touched and she learned that the hard way back in grade school when she jumped on a friend’s back and promptly got crushed when they fell over. It was a traumatizing enough situation that she learned never to do that again. Having broken bones made being a kid very difficult.
“Yes! That would definitely work. I can think I can steady myself well enough,” she agreed as she took around for something that would give her enough of a ledge that she could climb onto his shoulders easier. “I’m going to step on this and hope it doesn’t break,” August chuckled as she placed one of her feet onto a decorative trim near the middle of the post.
It would help if Domino had gotten down a little lower. He was free to do so if he wanted to, but until then she was just going to try to swing her other leg over his shoulder. Once she got it over, it pulling herself up with her arms was easy. Working in a bakery was a surprisingly good workout for the arms on busy days.
Her balance was a bit wonky on the way up to situate herself in a comfortable position. She felt a bit off-kiltered, but that couldn’t be helped. She was borrowing someone else’s balance on top of her own now as well. She managed to feel comfortable enough to extend herself fully while sitting on his shoulders and was rewarded with a perfect view of the inside of the lantern. Smiling widely, August reached into her pocket and pulled out the matchbox.
With one over exaggerated strike, she lit the match and laughed. “I won’t accidentally burn your hair,” she promised as she reached into the lantern and lit it. Blowing out the match, August flicked it onto the ground below her, making sure that Domino was not in the used match’s flight path.

She agreed with the idea, and Domino would give an acknowledging nod of his head. Well, at least there would be no need to convince her as to how sound his suggestion was. That certainly saved him a lot of time and trouble, a consequence that Domino rathered not be dealt to him. She began to glance around, then, before approaching the lamppost. Was she going to use it as a step to elevate herself onto her shoulders? If that was her plan, then Domino would have to adjust to just that, wouldn't he? Walking over as well, he would turn himself so that his back faced the lamp post.
Then, sliding his left leg in front, Domino would bend both of his knees to lower himself. His hands would slowly come up, waiting at his sides for her to mount his shoulders so that he could grab onto her legs, for better security of position. It did not take her long to do as such, as Domino felt the pressure of her weight on his shoulder. The respective hand snapped up, placing itself upon her shin and pulling it back, half-tucking it under his arm. The other leg came, and he repeated the process, and as soon as it felt as if the girl had managed to secure a position on his shoulder, he would straighten himself up.
He allowed himself then to get used to her weight, remaining still for a brief moment and making minor adjustments to his arms so that his shoulders were at a comfortable posture, before walking closer to the nearest lantern. Raising his chin slightly, he looked up and was relieved to see that they had indeed managed to reach the lantern, with excess height too. And finally, she lit the lantern, clearing that off of their required numbers for the quest. And then, she quipped a bout accidentally burning his hair, to which he could only scoff and frown at.
"I'd burn you if you did," he quipped back, before releasing a sigh. Once she was done, Domino would proceed to carefully trudge over towards the next lantern, believing himself capable enough to carry her throughout the mission instead of having to mount and dismount at every single one of the ten lanterns.

“Burn me?” August asked hesitantly, “I’m pretty sure that’d change your status color to orange and the NPCs will run you out of town. I don’t suggest doing that.” She wasn’t sure if the system could tell whether something was an accident or if it was done on purpose. At least with the hair it would have been easy to smother out quickly without inflicting any actual pain. Plus, there was no way she’d be able to finish this quest without his help.
The sudden movement of Domino walking caused August to yelp and flail her arms around for a little bit before she regained her balance. “Not too quickly,” she managed to pipe out as she shifted her center of gravity to give herself better balance. She held onto the box of matches tightly in her hand; if they dropped then the two of them would be in quite a predicament when attempting to retrieve them.
Flipping open the container, August pulled out the second match. There weren’t too many of them left inside the matchbox she was given, but it wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Domino had previously told her he was given one too; maybe there would be more than enough if they pooled the two matchboxes together. She pulled another match out and struck it across the surface of the box in the same exaggerated fashion as before.
Dipping her hand into the lantern, August no trouble lighting this one either. “Slowly this time,” she said as she blew out the match with a huff and tossed it onto the ground. This was going to be easy. If they kept this up, it wasn’t going to take them more than a few minutes to light them all. The lanterns on the street were laid out nicely in a uniform fashion. There was no need for them to run around finding any that were hiding or anything complicated like that. As long as Domino didn’t drop her or cause her to lose her balance, they’d be fine.

"Wouldn't the same be applicable for you if you burn me?" he quipped back almost immediately, as he cocked his eyebrows. He leaned his head back to look up at her, this conversation going in a direction that was far from comfortable for the young man who valued his hair quite considerably. Who in their right mind, in fact, would like to have their hair being burned? The girl would then call out after the initial movement, asking for him to be more careful. He flinched for a moment, before releasing a sigh. Well, it wasn't like he could help it. He just wanted to get this over and done with, so of course he would act a little bit impatient. But he would concede, knowing as well that he wouldn't be able to finish this as easily as they were doing at that moment, if she hadn't co-operated. He simply nodded his head. "Fine, fine."
Reaching the next lantern, Domino would take his time to glance around. It was getting darker now, and Domino was depending more now on the light of the already lit-lanterns to find the next target, instead of the light of the almost-invisible Sun. Once it was completely down, he wondered just how dark it would become. Would they be able to make it to the next lantern easily? He tried to make out a few more, memorizing their locations then to aid him further on. With the 2nd lantern lit, Domino would nod his head. And this time, with a more careful step, he made his way towards the third.
As he did, he realized something rather odd about their relationship here, and he scoffed, tilting his head lightly in disbelief. Was she really so gullible that she'd trust someone she had never met before, much less knew the name of, to not drop her? She looked the part, for sure. "I never got your name." august

“Maybe,” she agreed, “but mine would be an accident.” The server probably didn’t care whether it was an accident or not, but August would feel better knowing it was an accident. “Plus, burning your hair isn’t really as painful as burning an actual part of your body. That part of you actually has nerve endings,” she added as she lit another match.
“Name?” August repeated as she found herself more settled and comfortable with Domino’s movements this time around than previously. If he continued to move with this much care, August would have no trouble balancing. It was much smoother than before. “I’m August. And you are?” she asked as they approached the third lantern. It had never occurred to her to make introductions. They had both dove straight into the task at hand; she had completely forgotten about inquiring him for his name. Flicking the third match against the box, it light with a light pop that startled her.
She jumped momentarily with a yelp before calming herself down. It was just the noise that matches made when they got lit, not big deal. It was the intensity of this particular match that had startled her. “Oops,” she chuckled as she reached over the top of the lantern to light it. “It’s getting rather dark,” she remarked with a sigh, “we better keep moving.”
Blowing out the match and tossing it to the ground, August placed her hands lightly onto the top of Domino’s head to steady herself in preparation of his movement towards the next lantern. She didn’t want to fall off. Falling wasn’t really a concern for her until she had read there was a skill to reduce falling damage. That meant that it was a type of damage one could normally sustain in-game. Whether it would happen at this low of a height, she didn’t now. August did know that she had intentions of finding out.
