August stared at the ingredients laid out in front of her. She had bought them earlier in the market, but August was still a bit unsure of how cooking worked in this world. She knew that her previous skills in the real world meant nothing; she had tried and sadly failed a few times before realizing there was a reason she had the option to improve her cooking skill.
It was a sad fact that she had accepted long ago and was working to improve. Now, August was ready to try again. The inn had allowed her to rent out the kitchen for a little bit in between meal times. What she really needed was an oven, most of her cooking was done inside that and the mixing in a bowl. She had to promise to finish before the dinner rush started, but in reality August had no idea how long this was going to take.
She could see people hanging around the common area from a small window on the side of the kitchen. Some were conversing with one another and others were simply sitting alone not looking particularly busy with anything. Sighing, August figured it was time to start up on the cake. She reached over to grab the pile of sugar and promptly knocked the entire thing over the edge and through the window.
August’s body cringed as the sugar hit the floor with a ‘plop’. Had anyone in the common room heard? She debated about quickly scurrying outside to see if she could retrieve it without being seen, but decided to peer through the window first to see where it had landed.

august; Ruler has no idea what markers mean. | | HP: 375/375 | STR: 0 (+39) | DEX: 5 (+12) | DMG: +33 |
Ruler had to wonder about the extra-ordinary amount of time he still spent in the Town of Beginnings, even after resolving to move his operations to Tolbana. But duty called, and he'd come running all the way from the other side of the first floor to fill a weaponcraft order. Maybe it was a good time to call quits on the business and craft for his own benefit: other crafters were springing up anyway, and he didn't really need the profits all that badly anymore. "And it's really good?" His customer was long-haired, with a fair face and long fingers. Ruler wasn't sure if it was a girl or a guy. It took him no less than ten minutes to assure his Viking Sword was good deal before the customer finally accepted to pay. Just as he was making ready to depart, some NPC unceremoniously tossed a load of sugar out through the small portview into the kitchen. He hesitated. Walked over anyway to see a girl poking her face out behind the glass. "Do you um... need help?" He pointed to the sugar. Not... not that he was sure it was a good idea to pick up foodwares from the floor, but NPCs probably didn't know. She didn't have a quest marker. What a shame. made by: n/a from link-start

Oh no, someone had heard her. August was resolved to not leaving the kitchen out of fear of causing more of a disturbance until the other player asked if she needed help. “Oh, yes! If you could pass that up back through that would be great.” She eyed the sugar with relief that it hadn’t spilled all over the floor.
“I wonder if I ruined the quality of this,” August laughed, “I have no idea if food items in this game even become lower quality from being dropped.” She hadn’t lost grip of an egg yet, thank goodness. August also wasn’t willing to sacrifice one to find out if it would spoil or disappear if she abused it.
It had been nice of him to offer to get the sugar for her. The walk out of the kitchen wasn’t a long one, but she was already in the zone and didn’t want to leave to quietly collect her mistake and sweep up whatever particles had spilled out. It didn’t look like much; hopefully the innkeeper would just fail to notice later on when he walked by the area.
She offered the other player a grin and pointed at the door a little further to his left where he could enter the kitchen. “My name’s August. I’m baking a cake, actually. If you wanna help I’d love the extra set of hands. Or the company. I’m not entirely sure what you’re cooking skill is but I can guarantee that the smell of the finished product is just as realistic as the real thing.” She had watched another player bake in here before; the aroma lit up the room with such a familiar tone that it brought back nostalgia.

august ; Let's go do. do the thing. the thing. | | HP: 375/375 | STR: 0 (+39) | DEX: 5 (+12) | DMG: +33 |
Ruler scooped up the sugar, staring at it like it was mush, and unceremoniously dropped it by the window sill. It was always girls asking for help. Since she'd introduced herself and talked about 'real' taste, he surmised she was an honest to goodness, genuine article girl from the other side. The sort who'd walk into you in the hallway and make a big show out of being upset. A girl's girl. The sort he had absolutely no idea how to handle, let alone talk to. "Um, uh, well, fine... I guess... I'll help out." He couldn't find a good reason to refuse. The kitchen was smaller than he'd expected, but still larger than the kitchen back home. Even if it was small, though, he still didn't feel quite at home in the kitchen. He liked to eat, but cooking? "So uhh... what do you want me to do?" He held his hands up a bit helplessly. made by: n/a from link-start

She waited for him to get to the other side of the door and into the kitchen before picking the sugar off of the windowsill and placing it back on the table with the other ingredients. “Well, I don’t know if there is much you can do,” she admitted, “unless you have a cooking skill as well?” If he tried without the skill, all that might have happened would be her food getting ruined.
“If not, I could always just tell you about the real way to make a cake. You can try it when you get home,” she suggested. It was possible he wasn’t interested in that either, but August was trying to keep him around. Having company while she did the mundane steps laid out for her by the program made the entire process a lot more exciting.
Cooking here was rather boring. All she had to do was dump ingredients in and somehow the proportions worked themselves out on their own. An entire bag of sugar in a cake? She didn’t even want to imagine how bad that would taste.
“I know there isn’t a lot of room to move around in here, so maybe you could just hand me the ingredients when I ask for them?” If she didn’t want him to leave, that involved her having to reach over his shoulder to grab the things on the table as the mixing bowl and oven were on the other side of the little table. “How about handing me that sugar you picked up earlier?”

august; Ruler's an expert at talking to girls. | | HP: 375/375 | STR: 0 (+39) | DEX: 5 (+12) | DMG: +33 |
Ruler shook his head. He didn't have any kind of cooking skill. It'd been on his mind once, but ultimately he just didn't have the skillslots for it. Even if he did, he didn't know how to cook. The excuses not to take it were numerous, though at its core... "Well, um..." He coughed. The way she spoke of 'home' so casually almost made it feel like they weren't trapped in a difficult game for a hundred floors, of which they hadn't cleared a single one after several weeks. But they were. Their reality was here now, and his home was now in Aincrad. "Sure, I can do that. Uh... so um, you like to cook, huh." He took the sugar from the window sill where he'd left it and held it out to the girl. "Ah, I once tried baking an egg, but it ended up charred black." Aaaah what was that! He wanted to slam his head into the door and make a retreat. What kind of conversational starter is 'hey durr i can't even bake an egg'?! Wait, he could fix this. He could salvage it. Just show his cooler side so she wouldn't think he was just a massive disaster. "I still wanted to flavour it, so I grabbed the sugar without thinking and sprinkled it on, thinking it was salt." August looked up for a moment as if to gather her thoughts before answering Ruler’s question. She didn’t love to cook, per se. It was mostly baking. Cooking was different; you had room to just throw things in and it didn’t matter if you put a little too much of this or too little of that. For baking, the proportions needed to be exact. Otherwise, the goods would not turn out well.
“I like baking a lot more,” she admitted with an apologetic grin, “it’s different than cooking. Not entirely sure how to explain it, but it’s different.” What probably influenced her opinion as well was the fact that she had been baking since she could reach the table while her mother was usually the one that cooked all of their meals at home. She never really learned how to do the latter because there was no need. Unlike baking, which was the backbone of the family’s source of income.
She looked at him quizzically for a moment and repeated what Ruler had just said in her head slowly. “You baked...an egg?” She hoped he meant baking it once it was already cracked open. Baking an egg, shell and all, without the proper time limit resulted in explosions inside the oven. She couldn’t imagine how painful that would be to clean up afterwards.
August considered using sugar as a seasoning for eggs. “I’ve never tried that before,” she replied as she deposited the sugar into the bowl, “but I suppose that could work. Although, I’m not sure how much that would off-set the bitter taste of the charred parts of the egg.” He really shouldn’t have eaten it to begin with, but it clearly didn’t kill him so there was no harm done. “The wheat next please,” she asked as she pointed to the pile sitting on the table.

The story of his stupidity was met with a calmth and coolness Ruler hadn't expected. He imagined most people'd make fun of him, or otherwise remark on the stupidity of his actions... but this girl took his mistakes as intentional, and replied as though he'd just told her something completely normal. Now he felt dumb for being embarrassed. If she wasn't going to be perturbed by anything silly he did, then... perhaps it just wasn't so silly. "Well, I think normally you wouldn't want to eat a charred egg..." He studied packages for a while, then selected the wheat and handed it over to the girl. "Anyway, I just messed up a little. I don't usually hang out in the kitchen." That was his mother's territory, like his father had the study and he'd had his room. That wasn't to say that his father wouldn't occassionally prepare dinner, but his father had an appetite for Italian. Like his mother, Ruler preferred the flavour of Japanese dishes. Ochazuke was his guilty pleasure, though udon was still one of his favourites. made by: n/a from link-start

“Probably not, I’ve never tasted one so I can’t speak for how much different they are from a normal egg,” she really didn’t have plans to either. It didn’t sound appetizing. She nodded in understanding of his excuse, “it definitely takes practice.” Taking the wheat from him, August stared at the bowl and frowned. Did the system not require her to process it into actual flour first? She placed the wheat gently in the bowl and considered her action for a few moments before shrugging and going on with adding in the ingredients.
“So,” August asked as she reach over to grab the eggs, “want to try this cake once it’s done?” They were close enough to her that she didn’t need Ruler to hand them to her. August had been worried they’d roll away, so the eggs were placed inside another bowl.
She wasn’t sure how the flavoring would play out, but August assumed that if the recipe didn’t fail it would at least taste passable as cake. “The butter and the milk are the last two things I need,” she said as she pointed at the two dairy products sitting on the other end of the table by the fridge. “I have to put it in that oven and wait twenty minutes, but then we’ll hopefully have some cake.”

She took everything with the practised ease of a poker player. That, or someone who was simply not easily perturbed. He was pretty sure she fell into that last category. Maybe she'd seen her fair share of failures and just didn't find it worth ridiculing someone over? Ruler wanted to believe that was teh case. She was a nice, good person. She was a person, right? She wasn't secretly an NPC who just off-handedly mentioned the real world, right? Wait... Had she actually mentioned it? He wasn't sure anymore. And on the other hand... if she was an NPC, that'd actually go volumes explaining her muted response. "Ah, um, I'd love to try the cake." It'd take twenty minutes? Well... he really didn't need to be anywhere in a hurry. It'd be fine! "Heheh... I haven't had cake in a while!" And unless his neighbour magically made him cake for his birthday again this year... and he was still stuck in the game, it'd still take a while before he'd have another chance at cake. With twenty minutes to spare, he felt like seeing just how far this girl would go. "So I've had this strong urge to kiss a guy." And if that merited another muted response, then clearly she was an NPC! made by: n/a from link-start
