Pax was sitting on a knocked over stump, poking the ground with his sword idly. He had sent out a public request for anyone to come take this quest. He had promised to carry them through the whole thing with no hassle. It had worked a couple of times already with the boars and that mountain climbing quests, and he was kind of excited to meet someone new. At the same time, he found himself loathing that he had to make friends in order to accomplish anything tangible in this game. He needed to be able to shine like the star he was. He laughed at himself for that thought and shook his head. He was no star in this game, just another victim.
"Well," he mused to himself in a bit of a sing song voice, "At least I'm a good player, anyway."
He turned his head to look around. He was just off the side of the road, next to a tiny goat path that lead to the NPC in the woods. He had done this before with Saint, and it wasn't too difficult. Those nepents could terrify weaker players, though. He sighed and wondered if his bulky armor made him look too terrifying to work with. He mentally brushed that idea away. Looking terrifying meant he should be more likely to get people to want to work with him, not less. DOMINO Quest

You're kidding me.That was the first words that ran through his mind the moment his golden eyes landed upon the bulky armored figure that sat upon the stump a short distance away from. He pursed his lips slightly, gazing upon the equipment that he wore, and immediately felt rather minuscule in comparison. He was still clad in the basic clothing of a beginner, having only just started his journey beyond the Town of Beginnings rather recently, and had yet to compile enough currency to purchase himself a better looking set. Hell, even his weapon screamed 'newb'. He had believed himself to at least be capable enough to handle a mission of the E-rank calibre, and one that finally involved combat, but now that he was in the presence of his supposed partner for the quest, he wondered if he was even going to make any significant contribution to the task. He sighed inaudibly, closing his eyes for a moment. Accepting the shame that he felt regarding the circumstances, he steeled himself for the task at hand. No point delving about it for too long. "Ey," Domino called out, announcing his presence to the other player. He was obviously a higher level player than he was. If anything, he should at least try to take comfort in that. Ceasing his approach at a comfortable distance away from Pax, his golden eyes then gazed towards the goat path towards their quest target. His partner definitely would be doing the majority of the work, and so Domino would set for himself an objective for his participation here. Do not be a burden. Even if these were monsters involved in an E-rank mission, his instincts should at least be enough for him to know how to defend himself, right? Eyes rolled back towards Pax, the passive expression on his face present as ever as he gave a light nod of his head. "I'm here for the quest?"PAXILON

Pax had started drawing little images in the dirt when someone finally showed up. He turned his head slowly to the newcomer, thick iron helmet hiding any expression he might have made. He listened to them talk, remaining in silence himself. Quietly, he put his hands on the log and pushed himself slowly upwards. The only sound was from the full plate armor clanking against itself as he stood straight up. He was shorter than the newcomer. Why did everyone have to be taller than him?
He sheathed his sword and nodded before taking his helmet off, revealing the large, childish smile he'd had underneath, "Hiya! I'm Paxilon, but everyone seems to like calling me Pax."
With that he gave a little shrug and tilted his head to the side. He questioned why he was here again, leading useless idiots into the woods to do some quest that he'd already done. He put his helmet back on and sighed. Flicking through his menu, he sent the newcomer a party invite before turning to face the woods.
"Don't feel pressured to do anything crazy, alright?" Pax warned against being a hero against what was most likely just going to be large, living eggplants, "I'm just doing quests for you lower levels so you all can help me and some friends later down the line. Can't let you nerds go die in the woods in vain, now can I?"
With that, he began walking along the little beaten path. It wasn't too far to the NPC, if he remembered correctly. DOMINO

Alright, he certainly wasn't expecting to see that. He blinked, unknowingly staring at the young man that stood before him. He had been expecting to see someone more gruff, not someone who looked to be younger than he was. It was only when he spoke up did Domino snap back to reality -- or as close to reality as in regards to the game -- and avert his gaze for just a brief moment. Midway through his introduction, of course, Domino would regain eye contact, finding no reason to be rude towards the armored male at that particular time. "Domino, or Dom, I guess," It was the persona he carried across his games, and for those that he did make friends in, his name had always been shortened to Dom. He figured, since he was going to be stuck here indefinitely, might as well carry that tradition on.
A pop-up would appear following then, and Domino's golden eyes bounced down onto it. Party invite, huh? Made sense, considering the nature of the quest. Giving an acknowledging nod of his head, he brought his right hand up, and tapped on the affirming button. And with that, the two were partied together. Domino noticed immediately the extra green bar that appeared below his own, with a corresponding name that matched what this man introduced himself to be. Well, that was settled then, it seemed.
"Don't feel pressured to do anything crazy, alright?"
"Don't worry. I know the stakes here, and I'm not too eager about the idea of dying this early," he replied simply, as he followed behind the shorter male. Pax then proceeded on to explain his presence here in an obviously lower-leveled quest in comparison to his actual skill. Well, that made sense. No one was going to be able to carry this game on their own, after all. The more warriors they had at the front, the higher their chances of actually passing it. He scoffed, giving a few approving nods of his head, as the corners of his lips curled into an amused grin.
Perhaps down the road, he should pass that torch on to the next person as well. If it ever came to that, of course. PAXILON

Pax chuckled a bit and nodded, "Domino isn't a bad name, really. I've seen some people who are stuck with some . . . interesting names. Like a friend of mine thought he'd be funny and named himself "Major Package". Now he's stuck with it."
He kicked himself just a bit for making jokes about something so silly when the situation they were in was so dire. Then again, a little bit of humor was good for the soul in times of turmoil. Not everyone understood that, though. He passed a few trees, already able to see the tiny little clearing where the NPC was hiding. She was pretty easy to escort, all things considered.
"As long as you understand that being a hero means a quick death this early in the game," Pax hummed, "We'll be all good."
When they reached the NPC, Pax audibly sighed as the programmed girl went into her monologue about not being scared of the woods but needing help anyway. He shook his head and accepted the quest prompt, turning to look at Domino with a firm nod, Now, we have to be careful. This quest can get a little unpredictable. Could be a couple nepents. Maybe a boar. The game doesn't like to be predictable with the enemies, I have to say." DOMINO

"That... Sounds like it sucks," Domino empathized with Pax's friend, and he found himself recalling the e-mail address that he had used when he was still a young brat. 'fallen_demon_', it had been. The thought made him shudder. Thankfully, he had long grown out of that phase. He would not have been able to live through the embarrassment had he used that name in this game, especially when there didn't seem to be any available method in changing one's name. Recovering from that train of thoughts, Domino would continue on to follow the stronger male, feeling a tinge of jealousy towards how much the man had progressed in comparison to him. How long would he, in turn, take to reach that level, he wondered?
The following words drew a soft grin from the young red-head, then. "Ironic," he commented simply, as he glanced over his shoulder. He wasn't looking at anything in particular, though his mind was directed towards the players back in the Town of Beginnings. The people that were too fearful in taking action, and chose to instead stay back and let the braver players push through. The slightest hesitation could mean the difference between life and death, Domino was well aware, and he was sure that a number of them recognized that as well. "I dare say a hero is what some people need right now," he added on, knowing that what people simply needed was a kick to push through. A motivation. Inspiration.
One more extra sword at the frontlines would always be more appreciated, he figured.
It did not take them long to reach their quest-giver, and Domino listened half-heartedly. He already knew the specifics of the mission, and simply allowed himself to just pay attention for the sake of immersion. Of course, he would led Pax take the lead, and accept the quest for them. And another warning came in, this one more detailed than the last. He nodded his head simply, furrowing his eyebrows lightly as he thought upon the chances of him being able to actually finish this on his own. He knew it well. He wasn't strong enough. And that was the very reason he had chosen to step out of the Town of Beginnings, to begin his own quest for power, to get out of the hellhole he had found himself in.
"Noted," he answered simply. PAXILON

As the NPC bantered on, Pax mulled over the words Domino had spoken. As he pressed accept and turned to face the guy he was partied with, he shook his head seriously, coming to his decision, "A hero? No. What people need right now is each other. A hero would only make them get comfortable in the fact that someone else is going to deal with the problem this game has us in. A hero might raise people's hope, but it also makes them complacent."
With a sigh, he realised it had only been a couple weeks before that he'd been planning on being a hero. He had the technical know-how, of course. He'd played so many games and had done so well in all of them that simply being good was an easy task. The problem came with how he'd have no one to help him if he did everything by himself, taking the title of hero. He turned and started walking back towards the path they had come from, deciding to continue the conversation as they walked.
"See," Pax made sure both sword and shield were equipped before moving through the woods, "what we need is something almost like heroes. A kind of people to vanguard for the lower level players and make sure the power up enough to be able to help out the higher powered players."
Saying this, he turned and patted the thick metal of his chestplate proudly, "We need more people doing what I'm doing now for you! If we can get more of the power levellers to come down to this level and help the beginners out, we'll be fine for the rest of the game, really. Honestly, I think it'll end up being a pattern later. People fighting in the labyrinth will get as strong as they can for the floor, and then climb back down to help out some of the weaker or more fragile-minded players. I'm not saying you're fragile minded, but you're also certainly not strong."
It wasn't long before they'd made it back to the road. Pax looked off to the left and nodded, "That way is the direction we'll need to go to get to Horunka. Come on, then." DOMINO

"A hero? No. What people need right now is each other. A hero would only make them get comfortable in the fact that someone else is going to deal with the problem this game has us in. A hero might raise people's hope, but it also makes them complacent." "That's not a hero, though," Domino quipped back. "That sounds more like a martyr," the red-head added on. One shouldn't forget that as fearful as people may be, a majority of them were what Domino liked to refer to as dreamers. Gamers. People who wanted to go beyond what was given in reality, and experience life out of the norm. As much as death loomed over them, one could not deny that Aincrad still offered all of that in ways beyond one's expectations. It was mostly those diehard gamers, or those with true bravery that had stepped forward to advance into the game. The black-haired male before him was definitely one or the other, or both. The only thing most people needed was a feat. A feat to demonstrate that this game can be beaten. Until then, they'd simply hope for that 'hero'. "But yeah, we'd need those too. Mentors would be the best word I can think of to describe it. Giving them hope is one thing. Teaching them how to make use of it is another," Domino agreed. It was clear to see that he hadn't just been cowering behind the walls of the Town of Beginnings at the start of the game, no. He had taken the safer road, and that was to analyze the game itself, from the background, and read into the situation before jumping in like many had done so. And that was the reason why a number had already passed on. "Keep it up, and we'd end up creating a cycle of such events. People advance until they hit a wall to high to hit, and they come back to gather more strength via numbers and skill," he chuckled, nodding his head a few times. It was a standard approach to anything, really, both in real life, and in games. A random thought passed through his head, then. If their life was at stake here, did that mean that this game was, in its own way, their real life now? Before he could think more into this rather philosophical argument, Pax's words would draw his attention back to 'reality', and Domino raised his chin. Nodding in acknowledgement, he simply followed after, keeping their client placed between himself and the other player. PAXILON

Pax actually stopped and turned to look at Domino. He shook his head and sighed, "Honestly, we probably just have different definitions of hero. When I hear 'hero', I think of someone who takes on powerful enemies in the stead of his weaker friends and allies. Rather than someone who leads the charge and fights with his friends and allies."
"We need leaders more than we'll ever need heroes right now," he made this last comment as he turned back around and kept walking, "Someone who can help people more than they know how to fight."
After a few moments of Pax remaining awkwardly silent, hearing what Domino said but not thinking of anything to say in retort, he stopped walking. He held out his hand to signal for Domino and the NPC to stop walking, then he pointed a bit off to the side from their path. If one were to look carefully, they'd see a shadow in the trees wriggling a bit. It would've been difficult to see if you'd never seen a nepent before, but Pax had fought plenty by this point to pinpoint what they looked like.
"That right there, if you can see it," Pax chuckled a bit and looked over his shoulder at Domino, "Is a terrifying eggplant. Stay behind me, and keep an eye out for more of them. They're sneaky little buggers."
With that he walked forward into the aggro range of the mob, smiling as the plant stepped out from the shadows. The writhing mass of bulbous plant flesh came almost slithering out from the trees, leaking its sickening-sweet aromatic juices down its front. Pax's nose twitched as the smell hit him like a truck. And then the vines came dragging out of the woods, suddenly dancing around the plant in a fury. All in all, the enemy was almost three feet taller than him and much wider, even with his thick armor.
"Piece of cake," he muttered to himself before sprinting towards the large nepent. A vine whistled through the air and cracked against his chest plate, leaving a glaring red mark on him. He grimaced for a moment at the pain, and then smiled. He swung his sword across the nepent's front, causing it to shriek in pain. And then, he charged his sword art and launched it, laughing lightly as the line of light carved itself upwards against plant flesh. His two attacks had carved a large red cross into the mob.
Another attack like that and he should-... Pax saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He barely pulled his shield up quickly enough to block the vine that was whipped at him. The crack of vine against wood resonated in his ear as he was pushed a foot or so to his right from the sheer force of it. He growled. There were two nepents.
