Apparently iron plating wasn't the best material for staying warm in the snow. His armor was cool to the touch as he made his way along the snowy path, wrapped up in his old white cloak for warmth. He may not have been able to equip it, but maybe the game would recognize his attempts at finding comfort and give him a break. Normally with this weather he would have been more than happy to work in the nice warm forge, or maybe catch up with his friends around the fireplace in the inn. But upon hearing that there were new quests to be had he was forced to step out into the elements and do what had to be done.
At least the sun was out and it wasn't snowing at the moment, solid iron boots leaving distinct tracks in the snow as he walked. The woman in town said she wanted mistletoe from a unique nepent that had appeared in the forest with the sudden changing of seasons. Hopefully it could be easily distinguished from the others, or this was going to be a very annoying hunt. The only thing that gave him comfort was that he would be killing plants rather than animals with this one. Sure he didn't have the best history with the creatures, but it would always be preferable to the pigs. No matter how much stronger they were.
As he reached the entrance to the forest he would set himself down on a convenient fallen tree just on it's outskirts. Once there he threw up a beacon and huddled up for warmth, waiting for the next player to come by with the same objective. Normally he would have recruited in town, but there were already so many people doing these quests. What he was looking for was someone who didn't have anyone to work with, or even someone who intended to go in on their own. It may not be the most pleasant wait, but he could tolerate the cold for a bit until someone came along. At least he could check out the message board while he waited.

| | Winter was an unwelcome development in the game. Gone were the idyllic picturescapes of blue skies and multi-coloured fields of flowers, replaced by heavy, pregnant snow clouds and a light dusting of snow that had been pretty for about half a day. It was less romantic when it was trampled to slush by hundreds of players.
Icarus shifted his feet, exhaling into his cupped hands. His breath hung in the air for a moment, a soft smudge of white, and he frowned in irritation as he shivered again. Buying a new cloak when his gear should soon be done was a waste of col, but he was starting to wonder whether it would be worth it just to gain that tiny bit of warmth.
He’d half a mind to turn back to town when he spotted the quest marker in the middle distance. Leaping at the chance to finally get this quest done and be back in the warmth of the inn with a mulled wine and some hot food, he sauntered down the path at a decent tempo.
Once there, he was pleasantly surprised to discover a player who looked geared enough to make this a breeze. His eyes traced the edges of the plate armour with envious approval before fixing on the other player’s face, cocky grin already tugging at his lips. “Hey, I’m Icarus. Looking for a party for the mistletoe quest?”

The sound of footsteps in the snow went completely unnoticed, Farms having become fully involved in reading message board posts. It helped to get a good idea of what the general opinions of the playerbase were like. As always there was a mixed bag, as there seemed to be negative or depressing post for every positive or upbuilding one. At least there was some excitement for these quests, so long as he ignored the people wishing to be back home with their families for the holiday.
The voice finally caught his attention, leading to him closing the menu and turning to make eye contact with the stranger. A hand moved to lift his visor, returning his cocky smile with a much more gentle expression. "Yes I am, in fact. Do you not already have a party?" He rose to his feet, a hands habitually moving to dust himself off. Instead that only resulted in the unpleasant sound of iron clashing and grinding against itself. "Sorry about that. Used to wearing...pants."
After taking a deep breath to recenter himself he would bow his head to Icarus in greeting. "My name is Farmsalot. If you don't have anyone waiting for you I would be more than happy to accompany you." As he stood up straight he took a moment to look the man over. Though it took him a moment to confirm that it was indeed a man, his feminine appearance making him second guess himself a few times. Maybe he should stick to gender neutral terms just to be safe. What he knew for certain was that he wasn't too well equipped, save for the sword. "Do you need armor? I have some spare pieces I made some time ago. They aren't the best, but it's better than going in unprepared."

Since you have armor being crafted, perhaps Icarus could just 'borrow' the armor. You could use it's stats for the thread while they stay in my inventory. I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue for just a quest. Or he could say no. That works too.

| | “Not yet.” He smiled sunnily and didn’t say anything as the player – farmsalot – grated his armour together, though something in his jaw tightened a little as the noise made his teeth ache. Whatever. He flicked his menu open ad sent through a party invite to the other, his run-in with Comic a dark warning in his mind; better to get strangers added to the safety of a communal group before they had chance to go crazy psycho on him.
“There, all set to go.” The quest didn’t sounds too bad – killing one large nepent sounded far better than killing seven small ones, though they did have to find the special one first. So far as he could tell, there was no reason they had to kill anything else, so as long as they were careful they should escape this relatively unscathed. Not that the other player didn’t look equip to handle whatever was thrown at them.
The offer of gear made him pause, considering. It was true that he could do with some, though his was due to be finished soon enough that it likely wouldn’t make any difference. Something about using hand-me-downs also had him turning his nose up, convinced he could do this quest without them. “Don’t worry about me. I’ve done the nepent quests before, they’re not too bad. My gear should be finished soon.” He tilted his head and considered, trying to make his reasons sound magnanimous rather than just because he didn’t want to accept charity. “You should give it to a player who really needs it.”

There was a look of relief on his face as he learned Icarus did not have a party waiting for him. Otherwise he would have been forced to sit and wait for the next person to come by, and he did not feel like sitting alone in the cold any longer than he had to. At least once he started moving around and doing the quest he would warm up a bit.
As he accepted the party invitation he couldn't help but think to himself. It was a surprise that the man turned down the free armor. Sure he may have had something in the works, but this quest could have been dangerous if he wasn't careful. Maybe he simply wasn't aware of that? He must have if he fought them before as he claimed. "I see." Farms would have to take extra care to keep this one safe. His previous nepent experience was still fresh in his mind, so he knew all too well how overwhelming they could be. Still the game did seem to be compensating for his and Gran's performance, so maybe this would be easier.
His excuse shed some light on the situation, the man's thoughtfulness bringing a warm smile to the armored player's face. "Now I understand. That's very kind of you." It was always nice to see someone putting other players first like that. He knew there would be some people chomping at the bits for handouts, so hearing those words was like a little ray of sunshine on this chilly day. "Shall we, then? I suspect our target will be deeper in the forest, so lets be careful and try to avoid unnecessary conflict if we can." There was no way they would just put the monster on the edge of the forest. This was supposed to be a special quest, so they would have to do some work to get their reward at the end.
With his spear in hand and held at the ready he gestured for Icarus to follow, treading carefully as they followed the quest marker through the forest. It was impossible to avoid making some noise. Between the crunching of the snow and the branches that hid underneath nearly every step seemed to be accompanied by some sort of sound. "Make sure to keep your wits about you. They could pop out from anywhere."

| | Funny how they’d both been subjected to nepents with Gran, although Icarus had ended up hiding behind her for the vast majority of the quest. He’d not even done damage to half of the little nepents they’d been hunting. This time, at least he could do some damage, though he was still fragile and couldn’t take many blows from the monsters. Hopefully his new friend would prevent that from becoming a necessity.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” He brushed off the praise over his fake generosity, though he was glad Farms had bought it. “Sounds good to me. Lead the way.”
Icarus stuck to the other player closely, keen not to get cut off if mobs spawned unexpectedly between them. It amused him the other player was attempting to be stealthy and yet talked anyway, his voice carrying more than his footsteps ever would. “Don’t worry, I’ve got no desire to be caught unawares.” He’d been sent sprawling to the floor by the last nepent that had spawned, unseen, behind him, so he nervously checked out over his shoulder to prevent it happening again. Nothing yet. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure nothing catches you by surprise.”
It was a bold promise when the vines would be camouflaged against the forest backdrop, but Icarus was reasonably confident he would be able to catch the tell-tale flash of the monsters spawning in.

It was quite the relief to have someone so vigilant watching his rear. His last experience with the nepents taught him that they just loved to spring up from behind while you were distracted. That little trick wasn't going to work on him again if he had anything to say about it. And if it did he would at least be quick to react to it. "I'm counting on you." Hopefully they wouldn't spawn so quickly that he wouldn't be able to protect Icarus.
His free hand rose as he suddenly came to a full stop, his eyes narrowing on a spot just off the path. "Hold on." He spoke in a hushed tone, as if their approach wasn't already noisy enough to give away their position. Still it wouldn't hurt to at least try to be a little bit sneaky. "Did you see that? I think there was some movement under the snow just a few meters ahead." Surely there was something lying in wait for him there. As much as he wanted the first strike, he couldn't bring himself to strike out at an unknown creature. For all he knew there was a wounded player there that found themselves buried in the snow. No matter how slim that chance was, he couldn't bring himself to risk it.
"Keep your distance while I investigate." Slowly, he approached the source of the movement. His steps were as cautious as ever, though he was lucky enough to avoid any branches as he made his way forward. That is until he was a few steps from his destination, the sudden snapping of a branch causing a Little Nepent to burst out from underneath the snow. "Stay back!" He lunged toward the base of the creature, piercing it with his spear before it had a chance to strike with it's vines. After taking a Sword Art stance he would follow up the stab with a wide Horizontal Slash, causing a trail of blue energy to trail along the path of the weapon's blade.
Farmsalot attacked Little Nepent A for 60 damage Farmsalot used Horizontal Slash on Little Nepent A for 70 damage
As the creature let out it's shrill screech it's vines moved toward Farms, one of them curling around from behind and striking him in the back of the head. The impact caused him to stumble forward a bit, but his HP bar made it clear that he wasn't in any grave danger.
Little Nepent A attacked Farmsalot for 30 damage
Farmsalot could only hope that the sound of combat wouldn't attract anymore of these...things.
