| | She took a moment to appreciate the view. Gilded with silver frost, the farmlands looked like something out of a Christmas card, a stunning vista of countryside that she’d never got to experience while living in the city. This was still boring, beginner stuff, the same as she’d found with any MMO she’d played, and she couldn’t help but wonder how much more the game had to give as they advanced to higher floors and more exotic locations. She hoped she survived to see it. The cold air stung her nose and flushed her cheeks pink. Cold, but not unbearably so, she curled her arms towards her stomach for a brief moment before glancing across at her party companion. He’d been friendly ever since she met him in town, and he’d even agreed to help her out with doing one of the higher level quests she would never be able to do alone – generosity or just pity towards a player who was still level one and ungeared she wasn’t sure, but she still appreciated the help. A thrill of fear and excitement ran through her as she considered the monsters they were hunting. Part of her felt like deciding this was a stupid idea and heading back to town. She was out here with someone she’d just met, with no guarantees that he’d do anything to save her if the mobs overwhelmed them, underlevelled and undergeared and with little practical experience of the game. Logically, she knew she should stick to the more basic quests until she’d accumulated enough experience and col to make her more prepared to take on anything more difficult. Fortune favours the bold, she reminded herself, knowing she would never get anywhere if she just hid. Going through the game without being willing to trust anyone would slowly drive her insane, so she just had to take a risk on this player and hope she wasn’t making a fatal mistake. |

Any farmer could tell you that winter was always the worst time of year. So much work had to be done to be ready for it, and when it finally came there was simply nothing to do. Of course it wasn't as bad as it was before the modern conveniences such as cars and grocery stores. It was mostly the waiting that killed him, being forced off the fields and hiding in the warm comforts of home. Still he would rather go back home to that than be stuck in this game. All he could do was make the best of it, same as everyone else.
He looked over at the girl beside him from behind his visor which remained down to protect his face from the chilly breeze. It was always sad to see people here who looked like they could still be in high school. Sure he wasn't much older, but it those years still felt like they were long behind him. The teenage years were so difficult for many, so spending those years away from your friends and family sounded like the worst thing imaginable. As such he always felt like he had to do everything he could to help them.
Opening up his inventory he began to scroll through his inventory, eventually stopping as he came across a specific object. It was then that he broke the silence that had taken up most of their journey to their objective. "You must be cold." As he spoke he selected the simple white cloak, causing it to materialize in his hand. He extended the cloak to Zero, his warm smile hidden behind iron plating. "Here, this would be better than nothing. The dexterity boost should keep you safe from the boars as well." He was quickly learning how handy it was to keep a cloak with him. Especially in chilly times like this.

| | “Thanks.” She accepted the cloak and slipped it round her shoulders, glad for the additional warmth. It was almost embarrassing how much help he was having to give her – thinking of her comfort as well as doing the quest for her – but she was determined to not let it go to waste. If the fates were kind, she’d have an opportunity to repay the favour in the future.
“Is it not boring fighting these mobs over and over?” It had been obvious he expected this to be no challenge at all, and stories she’d heard from other people suggested that she wasn’t the only one he’d been willing to help. How many of these beginner quests did he do, pouring in time to help out newbies like her? “Uh, not that I’m not really grateful for the help. I really am. You just…must not get much out of helping a stranger.” She could only imagine how many people must take advantage of his kindness. She wondered if his attitude would slowly change as they were stuck here and the difficulty progressed, becoming more concentrated on his own survival over helping others.
She hoped not, but she wouldn’t be surprised. |

A puff of mist came through the slits of his visor as he let out a breath of relief. He was concerned that she would feel too prideful to accept the offer, as he noticed players become more self conscious when they're being assisted with harder quests. He still wasn't sure if it was possible to catch a cold here, but he didn't want to find out any time soon.
Farms let out a muffled hum as he considered how to answer his question. It was easy to see how this could become boring, doing the same quest time and time again. And yet, no matter how much he despised this particular quest, he would continue to do it time and time again. "I wouldn't call it boring." Distressing would be a more accurate word. "I understand. But it's all very simple. The more I help, the faster players like you can progress, and the sooner we can escape."
How people could be so selfish as to not help weaker players was beyond him. Everyone was in that position at one point or another. "On top of that I still get the quest rewards as well, so you don't need to feel guilty that I'm wasting my time. As long as I have work to do, I am satisfied." His attempt to offer her a warm smile was once again hidden by his helmet, a small detail that would escape him time and time again. Hopefully his eyes would be enough to convey the emotion.
