Einar
James was born and raised in the US and had a relatively uneventful childhood. Average student, above average in height and strength, often playing contact sports and weapons training where he developed a few scars. But past that, normal family life, normal school life. When he was 16, he took on a new role as a mediator between his two year old cousin who was born with heterotaxy took a very firm liking to him. He never really understood the disease, but all he knew was his cousin felt very comfortable around him especially when he had to go to the hospital for days at a time. His cousin was introduced to the Viking Culture at one of these visits and having been descended from Icelanders, he took to the beliefs as much as a child could. It was always entertaining for James to see his much smaller sicker cousin act like he was some viking beserker. James went to school some after high school, but had dedicated most of his time to his weapons training as he had gotten hired on at the local Renaissance Faire as a combatant, something his cousin would often ask to go and see instead of going to the hospital.
When he was 22 his cousin became very sick and it was suggested that he be sent to a specialist in Tokyo that had been performing a new experimental treatment that was supposed to have a high success rate. James' aunt and uncle convinced him to move with them so that his cousin would be able to use James as a post to remain grounded. When Sword Art Online was announced and the VRMMO was described, James' cousin explained to him how amazing it would be to be able to play in it as someone who wasn't sick. Maybe he could become a VR viking and escape the real world for a little bit. James carried the message to his aunt and uncle who thought it wouldn't hurt to try. Sure enough on release day there were two NerveGEARs waiting for James and his cousin. They plugged into the game, James logging in under the name Einar, a viking name his cousin picked out that meant Lone Warrior, and the story is the same for everyone. His cousin accepted the reality of the situation the only way an 8 year old could and just believed that this was real life. James found him safely to one of the other players who took on the children in an orphanage kind of setup and knew what his mission was. He needed to complete the game to save himself and his cousin, or at least die trying.
He barely lived in Tokyo for a few months before plugging in so he most likely doesn't know anyone unless they would've crossed paths at the hospital his cousin would've gone to. He isn't quick to make friends, and the ones he does make are very few, he would prefer a close knit handful than a large group of just faces. But those who he does call friend can count on him as a very loyal and discreet ally.
He has no want or care for anyone who would stand against him as a rival or enemy. His goal is to complete the game and save his cousin. Anything that stands in the way of that can either be moved aside or be struck down. Its life or death at this point.
His experience with women is what can be expected, a few dates here and there in his life time but nothing special. He isn't trying to find his future in this game, but if someone happens to come along then they come along.
