for genis! quest thread Theta hated to think of herself as a woman of menial tasks, barring when it was ordered of her by some greater, higher force. While Theta would gleefully drop everything should one of the royal families ask her to, she often found it somewhat difficult to reconcile the perceived waste of time with that of things such as finding lost pets, helping someone by putting up lost and found signs, or playing with children. At least, on the surface she did; and on the surface, Theta would have loved to keep up the picture of the iron-clad, hard-hearted but endlessly dutiful knight. Yet, something about how the old woman begged her for help finding these kittens pulled at the knight's heart strings, something about her endlessly courageous nature beckoned her to help; even though it was an inconvenience, and Theta would have rathered spend her time elsewhere, more productively, slaying monsters or saving princesses, even though she never had real talent with animals.
And it showed, because the minutes seemed to drag as the knight searched for those kittens, occasionally casting suspicious glances towards the sky, hoping that it wouldn't see fit to rain upon her. Just where exactly could they be? (Really, it was a starting quest, how hard could this be?) Theta grit her teeth. Her mentor would always tell her about temperance, patience, after all - but she always struggled to remember it, especially when lives - lives that Theta sought to protect - were on the line. Though kittens weren't what you would normally think of as a Knight's ward, they certainly were now, in this moment, and Theta was going to see this quest through, even if it took her hours.
(Reveka wondered if this MMO had any mods to allow for a character profile to be made - it would be nice to have a place to write down all of these random backstory details. The basic profile was kind of sparse, and game focused - no area for personality or history or anything. That said, it was still in beta, and she didn't know the first thing about modding for a virtual reality game anyway, so she left that train of thought be. She discarded it, in fact - because a familiar face walked into view, and she was about 90% sure she knew who it was. She hesitated, for a moment - Theta was focused on her goal, after all, and this was a "random person". But then again, Theta was growing frustrated; and there was Reveka's excuse.)
"Pardon me, sir," Theta greeted upon her approach, her tones stiff though not particularly rude; she clearly wanted something out of the conversation, and wasn't too keen on explaining explaining herself. "You wouldn't happen to have seen or heard of any kittens about... no?"

Well, today was a rather eventful one.
Areto wasn't intending on accepting a quest on his first day in the game. Nor was he thinking that it would be anything this simple but surprises were to be had around every corner. He had simply been minding his own business while trying to get used to the feeling of his body's weight in the game. An old woman was crying her eyes out and speaking to anyone who would lend her an ear which would've been no one. Areto folded his arms across his chest and stared at her from a distance wondering if he should assist her. She seemed rather saddened by something and it wasn't right to just let anyone cry. Mustering up a sigh, he made his way over and asked her what was wrong only to be greeted by a rather extensive story. His eyes widened slightly and he held up his hands in alarm.
She was an NPC?
Of course, a voice in the back of his mind whispered.
Surely there wasn't anyone posing to be an old woman in the game just at the start of beta. Wouldn't that be embarrassing once the game was at full launch?
The woman spoke of her kittens whom were lost somewhere in the city and asked for Areto's help with finding them. He agreed, rather curious about the implications of the mission and somewhat excited to start a new adventure, only to remember that he wasn't very knowledgable about the innerworkings of a cat's mind. Let alone a kitten. Somewhere along the way, he hung his head in defeat and sighed. Resting against a wall while standing away from the flow of traffic, he glanced at the passing persons and NPCs wondering where the mischievous kittens could be and what they were doing. The slowly greying sky threatened a downpour and he wasn't in the mood for a shower.
A hand pawed at his elbow and he steadily waved it off.
It happened again and he raised his head, eyebrow cocked and a frown gracing his features only to be staring into the eyes of a furry little creature.
"Mew."
Areto perked up and reached out to touch the kitten only to halt as someone else called out to him. Glancing over his shoulder, he tilted his head to the side and smiled wide. He recognized that curt tone anywhere and that demeanor, the way this person was dressed.
"Rev?"

The first thing that Theta noticed was that behind this new and strange man who she had never seen before and certainly had no connections to laid one of the kittens that she had been seeking - just as she had asked him for information. That was deeply convenient, but the knight was glad, even if his only response to her was a strange syllable that certainly had nothing to do with her. "Rev?" She questioned, deliberately - perhaps with a bit too much force behind it, but more than a question, it served as reminder for a certain someone else to not break character. She pursed her lips, then formulated a further response. "You see, I had been searching for these kittens - a kind old woman asked me to do so," Theta said carefully, watching the completely nondescript and unfamiliar man with a guarded golden gaze. (Really, this was just typical of him. How many times would Reveka have to say it, she was busy doing important work! Calling people by real-life nicknames just breaks immersion, you know? She was a pro at this by now; expertly crafted and deep characters were her life's blood. Don't break immersion in the greatest immersion game ever!) Theta, however, was unswayed and unaffected by the faux pas, finding it barely worth nothing.
"I would suggest that you give this one back to the woman, but she seemed to be of mind that several had escaped, so perhaps... two pairs of eyes could be better than one, in this regard?" Theta asked so somewhat guardedly, not entirely certain of the nature of this man, or if he was going to be of any service. If nothing else, she hoped that he could at least serve as glorified cat nip, considering that he was so lucky as to have the cat come to him rather than the other way around. (Was she just looking in the wrong places?) "You're free to say no, of course," Theta said, one soft breath released as if she were preemptively annoyed with the situation - already was, honestly. "But if so, I will have to respectfully ask you to give the kitten to me," Respectfully. So. So respectfully.

Why was she talking like that?
It wasn't as if Areto wasn't already aware of Reveka's fascination with roleplaying from the games that they'd play in the past. However, he wasn't really sure what to make of this. She was really into this role wasn't she and even going so far as to even pretend not to know him. Not sure whether his feelings had been hurt or he was simply playing along, Areto's lips curled upwards into a grin and he reached out for the kitten that was steadily pawing at the fabric of his shirt. Lifting the small feline into his hands, he glanced between it and her noting the irritation in her eyes.
"I'm sorry ma'dam, do you mean this kitten," he said. "I'm afraid that I'm rather attached to them."
As if to confirm his point, the kitten began to paw at his hair as if it was yarn. Areto smiled wryly and tucked the kitten into his shirt so the little one wouldn't fall out or get lost during their venture. Casting a smug glance in Reveka's direction as he stood up, making a show of patting the kitten while he did so, Areto folded his arms afterwards. Of course, he was well aware of how ridiculous he must've appeared with a kitten tucked down his shirt. But what was the harm if he was able to poke a little fun at his good friend?
"Now then, I believe that proper introductions are in order, I'm Areto. And you are?"
As if hit by a sudden revelation, he snapped his fingers.
"A quest partner..? No. A knight...? Mm, no. Perhaps, a travelling circus woman. No, that can't be it.."

Ohoooo, this little...
In a way, Reveka liked the challenge that Ryuu had posed her. And of course, outside of the bounds of a video game, in the real world, she valued him as a close friend, regaling him about tales of her online exploits and spending too many late nights just nattering at him. He was something of a comforting person to be around, in real life, and for someone as normally hesitant and shy as Reveka, she appreciated that greatly. That said, Areto had just insulted Theta, a knight through and through, a woman of honor and pride. Theta gritted her teeth, clenched a hand, and then practically growled - "A knight, good sir," But then she paused, taking a deep breath, seeming to understand that she needed to exercise the amount of temperance and control that her mentor wished she had.
"Areto. I suppose that kitten must be yours, considering how fond of you it is, and I must beg your pardon for accusing you of something like theft. There's simply a very upset older woman who is very concerned for the health of her kittens, and rightfully so, considering how it may rain; kittens may catch their death of cold in conditions such as that," Theta warned carefully, gaze on Areto now. If he wanted to play this stupid game with her, that was just fine; but she would appeal to his morals first, because her duty, her wards came before her pride in this case, if just barely. "I believe someone a tad bit more... familiar with that sort of animal may be a great help," Theta's words were stiff, her demeanor was stiff - she was very clearly parlaying rather than socializing, hinting at what she wanted rather than going so far as to beg. This random jerk who had the gall to compare her to a circus performer didn't deserve that much.
That, and, well. Reveka wasn't going to give Ryuu the satisfaction of seeing her laugh at him with a cat down his shirt.

He was almost tempted to tease her considering her posture and tone of voice. Though, seeing as Reveska took this roleplaying thing rather seriously, it would be best for him to play along or else they'd make a scene. The kitten tucked in his shirt seemed to shudder from a small gust of wind that passed by and Areto gave a cursory glance towards the grey-ed sky. A rather unfalttering color considering the bright blue that he had seen so much earlier in the game. Petting the kitten's head and giving a soft smile to the little feline, he glanced up at Reveska with a raised eyebrow. Well, if he was going to trust her with his life and also the lives of these kittens, he might as well know who she was claiming to be.
A knight, firstly.
"And what would your name be exactly, knight?"
He folded his arms underneath the kitten's legs while trying to keep a straight face. A furry tail was tickling his stomach and although he couldn't really feel it in-game, he remembered feeling quite ticklish in the real world, and it was carrying over. Little twitches and twinges in his lips could show that he was ready to laugh but he managed to keep a stoic gaze to act the part. Sadly, once the tickling got to be too much for him, a smile cracked through.
"How about this, we hurry and find the kittens, and talk on the way?"
With that, he raised a hand in greeting to her and motioned for the pair to walk the same way that the kitten seemed to have come. If the kittens were this sensitive to cold then perhaps they were hiding something that they could be warm.
"Hurry now before you're left behind!"

"Theta," The knight said, gruffly; but not quite as harshly, her stance relaxed just the tiniest bit, as it seemed like Areto was actually going to cooperate and help her. He kept the kitten to his chest, nice and snug, and Reveka pressed her lips together, trying hard not to smile. Theta wasn't amused by this - she was still singlemindedly concerned about her wards, the kittens, the ones that were hiding out of her reach. She jogged to catch up with Areto; (damn it, he was carrying a cat, how was he this fast?) and then opened her mouth to speak. "I've not had any luck so far finding the kittens," She said, dutifully, eyes scanning the surroundings as they searched. It was actually somewhat distressing, and Theta was about to ask Areto for more tips, or perhaps pick him up and wave him around to attract the kittens when she spotted a patterned tail poking out from under a box.
"Ah," She paused, and then slowed to a stop. And then, she quietly approached the kitten, squatting down to its level and removing the box. "Hey there..." Reveka said, gently, trying to keep the kitten from running off. ...This was just a game, and the cat was a quest item, so it actually wasn't as skittish as real life cats - Rev blinked, and then coughed, gently scooping the cat up into her arms. "Here is one," Theta said, looking just a tad embarrassed as it rubbed its cheek against her arm, purring happily. "And... where else do you think a kitten would be? Again, I must profess my ignorance upon the subject..." Theta shifted a tad bit awkwardly; unused to relying upon people for such things, it made her uncomfortable. For a moment, Reveka considered stuffing the kitten down her own shirt, but that would have been drastically out of character barring suggestion, and also... ... also, Theta - or Reveka? Theta, had more in the way compared to Areto.
This quest was a lot slower going than Rev could have thought it would be; but then again, it did allow for an excuse for her to get to know this new person. "Areto, past owning a cat, are you particularly familiar with animals?" Theta deigned to offer, almost shyly; partially just filling the air, partially ever so slightly curious. Such a thing could be useful to her in the future, after all, and while Theta was known for being something of a loner, she wasn't about to pass up help in her quest of serving the royal families.

[attr="class","strawberry"] [attr="class","coconut"]TEN THOUSAND KITTENS Areto was tempted to remind Reveka that the two of them met in real life. She must've known that he had pets or perhaps that was something that he forgot to mention. Nonetheless, the sight of a stoic dark knight with a purring kitten in her arms was less threatening than he thought it would be. Though if he told her something like that it would only serve to spike her "edginess" and send her on another rampage. Roleplaying in the game might be necessary though if only to get a break from the real world if not anything else. The little kitten in his shirt seemed to be happy to see one of it's friends and pawed at the other. Areto crossed his arms underneath the kitten's legs to keep the feline from falling out of his shirt and chuckled. This was turning out to be fun! If not long. They would have to find the next kitten soon before it started pouring down. He could already feel a few droplets against his forehead and the kitten in his shirt shivered against another cold breeze. " I have a few dogs and a cat or two," he said. " They tend to prefer my sister and stay with my parents more so than me." It was hard to stay with someone that was barely home but he enjoyed seeing them when he could. Areto thought on where the kitten could be. Since one of them was hiding underneath a box and the other had come to him, it could only be assumed that the felines were trying to find shelter. " We may need to look for a place where there are more people. If they're attracted to others, then it could be possible that they were trying to find shelter from the rain or a way back home." He looked around and pointed towards an amassing of persons near the square. " Let's check there first?"
