"Horunka, hmm."It was the town through the forest right? The next one someone went to after leaving the Town of Beginning? Thoughtfully, her fingertips lingered over the 'Accept' option, her musings drawing her around in languid circles. Her goal was the dire wolf in the shop... but she'd have to have better gear and a few levels before being confident enough to take it on. Gear required coins, and levels required experiences... but really, it was only a matter of time before a group of people got together to take the dire wolf on. Maybe with a party of three or four it'd be easy enough... but fighting in the confined space of a shop would make maneuvering difficult... a shield seemed the obvious choice, but... Ugh. She was wasting time. Finally agreeing to the task, the chef rummaged around in the kitchen and produced a rather cumbersome looking box. Plopping it into her hands, she wavered a little under the weight. ... Why was the bread in a box? ... Why did the bread in the box weigh so much? Frowning, Zoya looked around. Ah, that one - "Hey, you're doing this quest, too, right?" Why else would a player wander into the head chef's kitchen unless they were planning on tackling the task, too? Rationalizing it away, Zoya passed the buck (or box as it was) and offered (pushed) the box into the player's arms. “Let's do it together. Are you ready to go?”
Please feel free to join. This is another one of those 'you could hop in as the person Cross is addressing/interacting with, or you could hop in as someone who is watching said interaction go down.' ^^ Quest: Fresh Bread [F].

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • i hope you don't mind me popping in | As he turned his head to look towards the direction of the voice speaking to him, his hands unbeknownst to him accepting the heavy box of...something? He glanced down towards the wooden box in slight disbelief before turning his attention back towards the blonde woman. Accepted the quest? Yes, he did.
After he had gotten himself lost and wound up here. As the image of the map slightly covered the woman, he took a few seconds of not responding to finish the task he was doing with figuring out where the hell he was and where the hell this Horunka was, but... If this girl was doing the quest as well, then that meant she knew where she was going. At least, he hoped she knew where she was going.
" Yeah. " and a sharp nod of his head, he moved to show that he was going to follow her behind. Moving the box in his arms to cradle in his side as he pressed for the button to send a party request in the girl's direction. He positioned himself ready to move along.

Perfect. Even more perfect was the lack of inquisition. While she half expected a round of 'Why do I have to carry it?' to happen, Zoya was happily surprised when all she received was a remarkably efficient 'Yes.' from the stranger and the subsequent party request prompt. Accepting the invitation as she headed out of the door, she kept the door propped with the tip of her foot until 'Goryo' passed through. And then she stretched. She had already sunk a couple hours into the game, but... "Hey, you're still level one?" She half-asked, half-stated, a frown turning her lips downward as she began to head towards the town exit. Despite her rather unimpressive stature, the woman could and did move at a quickened step. With a wrinkled brow she noted the overcast skies and harbored a glance towards her new partner. He was perhaps not as cute as the pink-haired mom, but... "Did you beta test?" she asked over her shoulder. Truth be known she had yet to see anyone level two or above and... well. That was weird. This wasn't going to be one of those games where it took months to get to level five... was it? Considering most of the skills Zoya found herself interested in only happened much later, she couldn't promise steady enthusiasm if the wait for 'cool stuff' was impossibly long. goryo I don't mind at all. Thanks for joining!

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • awesome | Watching as she moved towards the door, he didn't miss a beat in following after. Walking past as she left the door open for him, pausing a moment to readjust the box in his hands, he continued following after her. Even as she quickened her pace, he followed after without lagging behind. He liked quick paced people, he couldn't stand those that sluggishly made their way through life. Even more when they walked in front of him.
He didn't turn his attention towards her when she asked the question of his level. Neither did he really respond. It was quite obvious what level he was, you could just tell by the equipment that he wore. Even if showing one's level was available to others, he could look at her and tell that was the case for her as well.
However, once she asked about his beta testing, he lifted his head to look up at the back of her head. Barely catching her looking over her shoulder in his direction. He glanced towards the side as he thought it over. "—No. "
" Did you? "

His adjustments of the obnoxiously large (for her, and presumably him) box drew her attention. If he dropped it, and it opened up, the bread would break. Or spoil, she guessed, but seeing food and items fracture into polygons and poof seemed much more akin to breaking than spoiling to her... If it had been someone else she might have issued them words of caution. Depending on the person, she might have taken the box back entirely. Nothing would be more wasteful than if they got halfway there and failed the entire mission because of something as silly as the inability to hold onto a bread crate. … But he could handle it, right? Lifting a thin brow she figured at the very least he would take precautions not to disappoint himself or fall behind. Unlike the expressive dynamics she had seen on Artemis, Goryo seemed... more serious. "Nope. You'd think the testers would be level five already," she answered while voicing what instigated the questions to begin with. Unable to gauge if she was ahead or behind of the pack, she couldn't tell if her pace was suitable. "You've only seen level ones around, too, right?" exiting the safety parameter of the city (and being privy to the warnings of the guards) Zoya kept her eyes peeled as the duo started off across the grasslands and towards the forest.

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • ..... | A grunt came from the dark skinned male, eyes vigilantly keeping watch to their surroundings. It took a while for him to come to the realization, but he was pretty much being the pack mule in this quest. Carrying the box filled with bread, and while most would make an objection to such treatment. Goryo merely kept his mouth shut. He had already lost his window of objection, but he didn't mind on a second thought. Better for him to carry it then to let the girl accidentally drop it just before they got to where they were going. That would have been annoying.
Her questions and comments certainly did pique his interest. He really hadn't thought about the comparison of other's levels and his own at the current moment. He had only seen level one players, as far as he was aware of. Those beta testers would have some sort of advantage as opposed to those starting the game normally. It was simple enough to conclude they'd know the fastest and easiest way to level. All he was concerned was just increasing his level as quickly as he could, no matter the rate between his and others.
" Yeah. " was his simple reply. he really wasn't one for over talking. if he could get the point across in so few little words, than he was going to do that. he didn't mind when people over talked, but he didn't care for people who expected him to contribute more than he cared to contribute.
Even as they exited the city limits out towards the grassy planes, the yakuza kept a sharp eye on his surroundings. He wasn't going to screw this up because he wasn't paying attention, but nothing really looked similar to him. He was very lost on where they were, and he was glad that she knew. Or at least, he hoped she did.
" Is this the way to Horunka's? "

Oddly enough Zoya was not offended by the quietness of her companion. It was strange, admittedly, but it wasn't bad... and he responded when she spoke to him. What more could she ask of him that would not be demanding? She took his silence as resolve and contentment instead of shyness or apprehension. If he needed something, wanted something, or had a thought to share he would have… right? Except when he finally worked up a question to share it was... Questioning their directive? Her brows knit and she harbored an uncertain look momentarily. Maybe he was joking? Or maybe he thought that... For some reason... She would not be following the quest directly? "Where else would I be leading you?" She asked instead of responding forthright, a little amusement trickling in. In retrospect this was the perfect mission for leading someone into an ambush, should player-killing outside of the towns be possible... Around the time they entered the woodlands new sensations came into play. Unlike the open plains and fields of gently rolling wild grass, the woods felt... dense and eerie. Shadows were cast in the corners and sounds of creatures unseen permeated both the canopy above and the forest below.

Right, she knew where she was going. So he'd trust in that, if not. Well, however the outcome went he would like to think that he had a fair enough of chance to take on whatever came his way.
" Understood. " as the grasslands began slowly turning into a forested area, the dark skinned man couldn't help but take a moment to survey the place. He didn't exactly like the idea of just walking into a wooded area with his hands filled up, but he would have to make do. As well as trust in his companion to take the nessicary precations to protect him and the merchandise.
While most would have found the woods to be eerie with the casting shadows and slight chimmer of animals above and below, Goryo found it ..charming. |

They traveled in silence, the sound of their gear and the box and their steps the sounds that filled the void of conversation. It was a peaceful melody saddled alongside the murmur of nature that did a better job in fooling her than the cities. Where the population was low and her senses took in only the predictable rhythm of unrushed life, Cross was lulled into feelings of relaxation. It soothed her. Until they heard screaming. It was a blood-curdling, shrill cry that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. The quiet reprieve of the woodland was fractured in a split moment as birds fluttered from high branches and shouts and hollers went out. Immediately she checked behind them before the sounds of combat drew her attention back to the front. "Let's look." She had taken to giving most monsters a wide birth, but when they were already engaged... Checking over her should to see if he was still willing to follow when she went off the beaten path, Cross snaked her way closer to the sounds of fighting. Nearing a clearing in the forest, she squated down in the brush to pay witness to a group of three under-geared players being cornered by four gory looking nepents.

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • .... | The silence and lull of the forest neither excited him or bored him. He was content with it and he had nothing to say really. He merely just followed after her, his shoes crunching the underbrush with every step that he took. Golden eyes scanning casually from side to side and ears listening intently for any sound that would be worrisome. At this rate, they'd reach their destination without an issue and with good speed.
The screaming that came next didn't reassure him, and he instantly paused in his step to glance in the direction of the scream.
"Let's look."
He glanced in the direction of his companion as he began trailing off from the beaten path in the direction of the screams. His lips pressed together as his eyebrows furrowed. She was one of those kinds of people. Whether he liked it or not, he had to follow her as she was the only one who knew where they were going.
Rolling his left shoulder, he picked up his pace to follow after the girl. Taking care to watch his step as he made through the foliage, fingers gripping tentatively onto the wooden box. As they neared the clearing in the forest, Goryo knelt behind brushes to watch three people get cornered by ...something. He wasn't really entirely sure what they were, and he squinted for a moment to read the name 'nepent'. Whatever that was. They just looked nasty.
" We're wasting time. " he monotonously whispers towards the girl, golden eyes still watching the three attempt to fend the nepents off. He wasn't interested in trying to be a hero and he most of all wasn't interested in wasting time from his quest to help out some idiots. |

She wasn't a hero. Artemis was, but she wasn't. But what she was was interested. Learning from someone else's mistakes was cheap. Seeing how the monsters moved, seeing how much damage the players took, seeing how easily their blades were parried - Wait. One of the three wasn't a player, was a it? The girl, there. She was huddling behind the two in the front but it didn't look like she had a sword. Narrowing her eyes she shifted on the balls of her feet, lips pursed and gaze concentrated. He spoke, but she did not respond. The intensity fuming from her peppers spoke of her fixation as she edged closer to get a better look. Saving the group was stupid. They'd just respawn. But... "Goryo, I think... it's a quest." She mumbled, blinking as she came to that realization. Why else would a NPC be with them? 'Isabel…' It had to be a guarding quest of some sort, right? One that these sorry slobs were failing, but one all the same. So... Quests can trigger out here, too, she thought, staring as the last player was slain and fractured. The remaining person, the NPC, began to run and hide as the nepents strolled back to their usual paths. She couldn't promise that they wouldn't be returning to the main road, or that their usual track didn't lead them near where she and Goryo would cross. Unaware but unwilling to be caught in the fray, she backtracked before resuming their course.

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • ..... | He didn't get a response from the girl, and in fact she seemed to want to inch closer towards the three soon to be dead people. The dark skinned male surprised a very heavy eye roll, and opted to remain close to her and watch himself. If there was anything he could get out of it, it was to see the strength of the monsters and which tactics to NOT use in a situation you're surrounded by nepents. (still whatever those creatures were )
"Goryo, I think... it's a quest."
An eyebrow rose in question and he surveyed the group more closely, looking for the clue that she found that it was the case. Watching, he saw the third party member shrink behind. No weapon out. That- That must be an NPC. Ah, he sees. So then either they were tasked with escorting the girl through the woods or they found her here and had to protect her from the nepents?
Sounded like an interesting quest, but not one he was interested in doing right now.
He carefully watched the last player be slain into a pixilated mess before fracturing away back towards the rebirthing station. He didn't think it looked so pleasant to get slain, and made a note of not getting caught in such a situation.
He glanced towards his side to watch her begin making her way back towards the road. Nodding his head and following after. As educational as that show was, it was better to return to the task at hand. It's a good thing she's not that kind of person. A hero. That would have been a mess. |

The journey was uneventful. They arrived at the town of Horunka and found the chef without extensive effort. When they arrived the NPC began its spiel of gratitude and joy, cracking open the crate and inspecting the goods with chubby hands and roaming fingers. And while it did that, she pulled up the party menu and left the group. While it talked to them (and she tuned it out), she turned to Goryo. … He didn't look very strong, but... Who did, yet? "That quest in the woods..." She began, well aware that what she would say next would be remarkably predictable, "I want to do it." Of course that meant she'd have to find the NPC and, then the matter of the nepents… Maybe there was a path through the woods where hostiles could be avoided? She wondered. "If I find it, would you help?" Crossing her arms she didn't beat around the bush. While she would do her very best to see if there was an easy way to complete it without battle, the reality that conflict probably was half the purpose of the quest didn't go unrealized. … Four nepents… Maybe a party of three or four could work? Hmm.

On the branches in the ditches, it's now silent and without life, And breathing becomes oh so hard for me Woe is me, oh woe, And the birds sing no more words xxx • tagged cross • ..... | Eventually, after the rest of the trip being uneventful, Goryo found himself in the presence of Horunk- Horunkso? Or whatever the NPC's name was. Upon arriving, he made his way towards the chubby chef and began placing the crate down in his feet, only to find himself face first in the grattitude. The sudden wave of loud sounds coming from the man and gestures cause him to close his eyes and pull back a bit. His form quickly retreating away fromt he general vicinity of the odd man.
Notification of Cross leaving his party catching his attention, but he made no response. Pulling the menu up himself to fully quite out of the party so that there wouldn't be any complications when he wanted to join another party.
His attention was caught soon when Cross remained to speak with him. Turning his eyes to look at her fully, he listened to her request. Join her in doing the quest they just witnessed. Sure, it seemed like a quest with a lot of reward, but two against four. With their level and equipment? That didn't sound like a good idea.
He crossed his arms, canting his head in thought.
" Get one more member and I'll join with my friend. " he responded. Four would be a better number if they were cornered like that. Not that he had any plans of doing something like that, but he never did like get outnumbered. In real life, that wouldn't be an issue. He knew his skills and abilities were enough to take on multiple people, but in the game? He didn't want to risk it until he was sure of what he was doing battle system wise.
He pulled up his menu and fumbled around for a while before pressing a button the sent a friend request to Cross.

Cross smiled (a rare feat in and of itself), pleased with the answer. While he remained unproven on the battlefield and had yet to show skill in anything other than box-holding, she had faith in him... Or perhaps she had an instinctual predisposition towards those that expressed pragmatic qualities. Accepting the friend request without hesitation, she nodded affirmatively as her mind went to work on the inevitable. Gathering interested parties shouldn't be difficult. Finding the quest giver might be challenging, but... there were few worthwhile rewards that did not include risk. Comfortable with the task laid out before her, Zoya began to leave, her parting words a cordial, "Seeya then," that implied her seriousness towards a future rendezvous. Cross said nothing else, she didn't feel a need to. She needn't tell him he did well; he knew he did (a mission completed successfully by any means, as long as it was successful, was one well done) and he probably knew the simplistic nature of the quest didn't deserve high praise. She needn't tell him farewell; he would do so innately and she expected nothing less. … And should she not need to talk, why should she? He didn't seem to need idle chatter to be content. She assumed the same was true for their parting. goryo / exit crossThank you for the thread!
