花は桜木人は武士 The smell of fresh baking bread only made his stomach turn further. A crooked frown rest fragile at his lips, quivering as his brows worried themselves together over his discouraged red eyes. Stuck? Here? His lips pulled tighter as he forced a swallow, hollow gaze set on the cheerful NPC in front of him. Having parted ways with his usual party leader, the quest icon blinking at the corner of his vision caught him off guard, causing his rigid figure to contort for a moment as he attempted for an instant to flinch away from it. Of course, upon realizing what it was he quickly settled down, reaching a staggering, shaky hand to tap at the notification and accept the quest. Checking for a moment to see if the loaves were truly in his inventory or if the game was playing him for a fool again, he sighed heavily when he saw they were, in fact, right where they belonged. Arata hung his head as he shifted his weight, lifting a free hand to press a palm to his forehead and bury his fingers in his hair. While it did little to soothe him, the sound of footsteps just behind him signalled that he had best get his act together quickly. Flipping his hair back, as if he had genuinely intended to do so from the beginning, he lifted his chin to cast a disinterested gaze over his shoulder. He was surprised by what he saw. Lips curved into a humored smirk as a dry chuckle escaped him, his body turning slowly to face the familiar young man headed for the same NPC. " Well, " he started, tone smooth. The NPC had started talking, offering the same quest to the newcomer no doubt, but it hardly dissuaded the man from continuing. " How unfortunate that you find yourself stuck here as well. " The words rolled off his tongue with a certain bitterness, the smirk at his lips cracked. Diz wasn't in the mood today. He knew that he had to get up. Find new places to explore, things to do, keep going. He'd also be visiting Souta today which was going to be one of the highlights of his neverending torment it seemed. Nothing would go right. He accidentally dropped the bread that he bought, aggroed at least six boars at once, and spent most of his time in a tree after trying to get away from them. It was absolute torture. But nothing could dim his mood at the prospect of seeing the other player. He had been so worried about Souta since the announcement but couldn't seem to find or get a hold of him. If something had happened to him, Toshirō wasn't sure how he was going to explain it to his parents. The NPC wasn't very far now and he found himself brightening up steadily only for the smile to diminish. Souta was there but someone else was as well. Someone. Hearing what that person said to Souta, Toshirō stepped forward to stand by his cousin's side. " I could say the same for you." If he was bothering Souta then there would be dire consequences to pay. He smiled at the younger boy. " Sorry that I'm late." otsukisensei Ruler[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Almost embarrassedly, Ruler looked away from the teacher. How had things ended up this way? The announcement in the square seemed an infinite distance away, even if it had not been too long. Part of 'the announcement' still felt like a bitter nightmare, but after pinching himself a few times Ruler was certain there were no dreams. There were, at least, a few good things. Online avatars falling away meant that he could at least recognise people he knew, like the teacher standing beside the quest NPC. In a way, it was also frightening. There'd be judging looks, no doubt. Especially from a teacher. Probably the only thing staying a lecture about the virtues of studying and the vices of gaming was 'the announcement'. "I'm, uh..." He was interrupted almost immediately by a familiar voice. It wasn't someone he'd expected to see, and his puzzlement at his cousin's appearance was writ plain on his face. "Ah, no, uh, well..." Hi, uncle. What's up, uncle? How you hangin', uncle? Yaharro, uncle. All the possible greetings died in his voice, and Ruler only squeaked a weak hello. "I thought I'd try to take my mind offa things by, uh, doing something," he added, pointing to the NPC whose quest he had only just accepted.

花は桜木人は武士 The mild amusement dancing in the man's red eyes seemed short lived, the boy's sheepish reaction managing rather effectively to put the reality of the situation into perspective. The smirk at his lips vanished as his mouth pressed into a mild line, sharp eyes examining his student's expression closely as the boy struggled to force out a word. While the interruption was unexpected, Arata didn't seem startled. "I could say the same for you." Arata blinked slowly, drawing his eyes upward to meet the gaze of the dark haired man now standing beside the boy. The edges of his lips pulled the slightest bit tighter as his brows set a little lower over his eyes, scrutinizing gaze setting to work at picking apart Toshiro's expression instead. If Ii's wide eyes at the corner of his vision were any indication, the boy hadn't expected to see the man either. "Sorry I'm late."His brow quirked upward at the boy's sputtered response, his focus centering back on Ii at his squeaked greeting. His attention followed as the young man reached his arm out to point toward the baker, taking note of how the boy stumbled over his words as he explained his reasoning. The edges of his mouth bent further downward as his dark brows pinched over his eyes, the mild narrowing of his eyes being the only clue to the blood beginning to boil beneath his skin. " A good idea, " the teacher commended, though his gaze failed to return to his uneasy student. There was a slight tension to his voice, but it rang clear. " Are you two traveling together? " It was at that that he turned slightly on his heel, finally moving to face them both fully. Red eyes moved from one to the other thoughtfully. Diz was trying to explain what he felt. The feelings welling up in his chest and threatening to spill over without any place to go. He could take his anger out on Otsuki here and now. The man was vulnerable in a way and he wasn't. Not anymore. But would it be worth anything, would it help anything, would it save anything. His gaze flicked towards Ruler and a fondness returned where the cold expression threatened to take hold. He laughed lightly and reached out to pat the younger boy's head. " What are you so nervous for?" It slowly dawned on him and a mischievous grin formed. " Did I scare you?" He was ignoring him. It was best this way. Forgive and forget or at least in this case, forget as much as possible. " You were going to do a quest right?" Looking to the quest NPC, he turned his head just enough to be able to see it but keep him out of his sights. " I'll come along, it could be quality time spent." He rubbed the back of his head and laughed, one hand on his waist nearest to where the sword was sheathed. " Unless you're not in the mood to have your uncle around." Ruler found the tension palpable. Even if Diz tried to disarm it, the boy did not mistake the brief heaviness that had formed at his cousin's arrival. It was the same sort of helpless feeling when his father and mother were having an argument, though not nearly as terrible. Ruler drew in a deep breath, then looked up at the two men by him. "We're going together," he said out loud, "I think it'd be better if we went together, because if even one of us ran into a monster and─" ─made a mistake, they'd die. Ruler did not finish that sentence. Ruler shrank back a bit again, and continued more quietly, "Well, at least I think we should. I um, feel like there's something going on between sensei and... cuz, but um..." Can you put it aside? It seemed too impertinent to make that request, so instead Ruler bowed his head and said, "Please take care of me, both of you." With his eyes shut, he hoped the sincerity of his request would net him two allies for the road ahead. Truth be told, Ruler wasn't sure exactly where to go with the bread (he had a vague idea it was in another town), and he still hadn't had his first taste of combat. If it happened, he'd rather be together with others. And if things went right, the three of them could escape with their lives. There was, after all, something comforting about one of his teachers tagging along. Otsuki-sensei wasn't his teacher right now, but altogether he was still (probably) someone dependable. Ruler opened one eye and peeked at the two men.

花は桜木人は武士 It was easy to see that Toshiro was doing absolutely everything in his power to disregard Arata's presence, and, honestly, it hardly offended him. He offered Ii a smile as Toshiro reached to give him a pat on the head, hoping that it might in some way help ease his embarrassment, but quickly came to realize that the boy's thoughts seemed to be somewhere else entirely. He blinked his eyes as the young man sucked in a deep breath, no doubt preparing himself for something. Arata's arms moved to fold across his chest, hand rising to rest a knuckle to his chin as he watched on, curious. "We're going together." His brows furrowed slightly at the announcement, trying to figure just who all was included in this 'we.' The answer became more clear as the boy continued, and with each word the mild warmth he'd mustered into his expression faded away, replaced instead with a discouraged frown. Ii too seemed to be feeling the weight of the tension in the room, as he only continued to shrink. It was at the mention of "something" being between himself and "cuz" that brought his gaze back to Toshiro, his grim expression remaining as he took the time to calculate the situation and weigh his options. He certainly didn't want to impose. Not on Toshiro. "Please take care of me, both of you." By the time his attention had returned to Ii he was already bowing his head in request. The chuckle that shook Arata's chest was dark, as was the forced smile pulling at his lips. " You should have more faith in uncle. I think he's quite capable of looking out for the both of you on a mission like this. " He offered the boy an assuring wink, his expression brightening as his smile finally softened. " Besides- " he continued, hand dropping away from his chin as he turned his eyes to rest gently on Toshiro. " I wouldn't want to slow either of you down. " We'll do it." A grudge will hurt no one but yourself.Toshirō or Diz, no matter what moniker he wore, would always look out for Souta. Even if it was in the face of someone that he wasn't comfortable with —. But why am I not comfortable with him?Because he found someone else to love. Someone that was better than him. Someone that was loved for the same reason he was mocked in the past. The weight of realization lessened and Toshirō's gaze softened as he raised his hand to ruffle Souta's hair but stopped in mid-movement. Arguing and hurting one another through ignorance and pettiness. It wouldn't hurt anyone but himself and by consequence, Souta as well. " I'm sorry." He patted his cousin's shoulder and offered a smile. " We should all get going before the sun sets, Horunka is a ways away." Looking up at Arata, he made an incline of his head and the disappointment along with the anger melted away to hold a serene peace. " Shall we, Arata, Souta?" He smiled. And for the first time in eight years, he felt lighter. Ruler sighed in relief. It looked like Diz at least would bury the hatchet, although his teacher needed more convincing. Ruler was sure that if they didn't go together, then his teacher'd go by himself. The thought of someone he knew being out there, all alone, in a world that could─ It unsettled him. "Sensei, please." More at ease with the menu now, Ruler deftly sent both players an invitation to his party. It'd mark his first time as a real party leader. "We should just go to... Horunuka together," he continued. The boy wondered if he should elaborate, but did not. Instead, he addressed something else. "Oh, and Uncle? It's Ruler here," he pointed out. "Please call me Ruler." He wasn't sure if insisting on his character name would keep some sort of barrier between the reality and this reality, but being called 'Souta' felt uncomfortable. Ruler looked between teacher and cousin again, crossed his arms, and waited for both of them to accept his invite. If not, he'd have to do more persuasion. This was a no-compromise zone.

花は桜木人は武士 "We'll do it." The words seemed to come as a physical blow that made every muscle in his body coiling from the hit. His lips pulled into an awkward, twitching line as he willed his brows to knit together, managing only to make himself look angry with the situation. Was it really that simple? He couldn't make out the words coming out of Toshiro's mouth, his mind far to busy sorting out whether or not it was a trick to even realize he'd stopped breathing. Even when he did realize that had his lungs had frozen, he seemed to have forgotten how to make them work again. Sun? Ways away? He couldn't even remember what they were talking about. "Shall we, Arata, Souta?"His heart skipped a beat, his jaw falling open as he stared at the man in bewilderment. It was impossible. Toshiro was smiling, and the realization was turning Arata's face red. "Sensei, please." The voice caught his attention, as did the notification blinking in the corner of his vision. He blinked his eyes, coming to the shameful realization that they were starting to tear up. He nodded at Ii's suggestion, struggling to gain the self control to pull his expression into one at least a bit more respectable. Pulling up the notification he accepted the request, lips drawn into a tight awkward line as his brows slanted over his eyes. " I ah- " He heard his voice break, and he stopped. Arata sighed heavily, releasing all his tension at once. His brows crescented over his red eyes as he smiled tiredly toward the younger man. His voice was still somewhat shaky, but certainly more collected than before. " I take it Ii doesn't suit you here, either. "

Even if he wasn't completely rid of the negative feelings, it felt good to at least come to terms with it in an abstract way. Diz glanced over at his young cousin and felt laughter bubble up in his chest. He stifled it by covering his mouth with the back of his hand only to laugh nonetheless. It was deep, warm, and he couldn't remember the last time that he actually heard himself talk or laugh. He smoothed a hand through his hair and smiled softly. Leave it to Souta to remind him what it felt like to be human or at least awake. Diz's hands found their way onto his hips as he glanced up at the HUD. " We should do as he says," Diz said. " He is an adventurer after all." Otsukisensei." And we shouldn't call each other by our real names, though it feels like a lifetime ago that someone has called me uncle.." When was the last time. Could he recall. His thoughts came to a halt and the warmth in his smile had a twinge of melancholy. " Otsukisensei, well, you two are more creative than I could be." Accepting the request, Diz reached out to ruffle Ruler's hair. " Though, you seem to like math more than I thought." With a flick of his wrist, the samurai opened up his inventory and sifted through. " You said that you used Kite Shield Proficiency last, right?" Diz recalled. " We should talk about costs for armor, especially shields." Walking ahead, he greeted the NPC and received the bread. But in the back of his mind, Diz noticed how red Arata's face was and forced himself not to think on it. There were some things in life that people weren't meant to have. It took every ounce of self-control not to pump his fist in the air in victory. Before, there had been two people who seemed at odds with each other. Yet after, Ruler found he had two dependable party members, even if he wasn't sure they'd really get along. After all, the time when he was at war with one of his friends had lasted sixty-nine days. Who knew how long adults would fight, and for how long they'd been fighting? Sensei's voice was strange. Not the voice itself, but the way he sounded: it wasn't anything Ruler was used to with a teacher. He gave Otsuki a puzzled look, but decided not to press the matter. "Ii's no good either," Ruler at least confirmed. "Ruler." It was another no-compromise zone. If someone'd told him just last week that he'd be commanding both his older cousin and a teacher to get along, Ruler'd probably laughed at them and called them a smackdabbing liar. Now, he felt no one would believe him even if he told them. Ruler swallowed, reminded momentarily of life outside the game. Then he shook his head to cast away the thoughts. "Kite Shield Proficiency, yes." It had been their talk not too long ago, on the properties of builds and Dex. "I don't intend to use shields, though," Ruler pointed out. One-handed swordsman, darting through the fight. That was the ideal he wanted to pursue, even if for now he was much more of a novice blacksmith than anything else. Crafting was surprisingly fun. Just smack the hammer down a few times and presto. "Sensei, what are your plans for combat?" He kind of imagined Otsuki-sensei as a thief, flourishing daggers and pelting enemies with rocks capriciously.

花は桜木人は武士 Toshirō's laughter seemed to put Arata at ease. His shoulders relaxed as his brows lifted slightly over his gaze, red eyes setting themselves on the man working subtly to keep his laughing under control. The edge of his mouth quirked a bit higher, amused. "We should do as he says. He is an adventurer after all." With a sudden, rough breath through his nostrils, he gave a humored snort as his arm moved back in place to fold neatly with its opposite. Surely Toshirō would remember that Arata rarely did as he was told. Nothing to be proud of, but he was anyway. He shrugged at Ii's insistence to call him by his player name, not arguing against the suggestion that they refer to each other by their aliases but certainly twisting his lips at the thought. The idea though that he thought to username "Otsukisensei" could even jokingly be called creative brought a slight smile to his face. It was at the invitation from Toshirō - " Diz " - that his arms eased themselves apart, a hand coming to rest at the hilt of his sword as his shoes clicked their way for the door. Ii's voice caught his ear, but his eyes didn't turn from his course. "Sensei, what are your plans for combat?"" Whatever keeps me alive, " he answered jokingly, moving by the pair as he glanced out the doorway to measure the distance between the artificial sun and horizon. He realized of course that it wasn't a suitable response. " I haven't given it much thought. " The carelessness of his voice made clear that it wasn't much a cause of concern for him. Well, at least they came to a consensus. Listen to the boy. Be friendly. Diz walked on one side of Ruler partly because it felt right. He never felt comfortable walking ahead or behind someone. Always to the side where it was easy to access or touch if need be. While they exited the shop, Diz gave a hearty wave back to the NPC who returned it although it seemed to be more of a formality. The loaf sat comfortably in his inventory but he wasn't sure if it wouldn't be harmed if anything happened and he'd have to be sure not to accidentally drop it by some ungodly means. While Ruler asked his questions, Diz remained silent but Otsukisensei's comment hit home. As if struck by a sudden surge of youth, Diz shot Otsukisensei a half-hearted glare. " You should take a moment to think about it," he chided. " If anything happened to you, I'd—" He stopped himself in mid-sentence. It wasn't his place to worry but old habits often die hard and his didn't die at all. With a slight sag of his shoulders, Diz turned his gaze away choosing to focus more so on the path ahead of them. " I'd be the only one to look after Ruler, who is putting quite a bit of thought into his characterization." Diz rubbed his chin with a curious expression. " You were thinking about blacksmithing last time we talked," he recalled. " How is that going?" This was safer waters. otsukisensei Ruler[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;google font="Open Sans";font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

They walked out the bakery, onto the stone-paved road. Ruler spared no time directing the group towards the exit, such that they could be on the way to Horunka. From what little he knew, there was a forest nearby, and the village itself was pitifully small. Though, compared to the sprawling Town of Beginnings, Ruler almost expected every other place to look small. For a 'Town' of beginnings, it sure was large enough to probably house an entire city district. His teacher's curt response seemed simple, but it was one of those problems that were complex. 'Whatever kept him alive'. Unless someone had cleared all hundred floors before, it was probably impossible to tell what choices needed to be made to 'stay alive'. Ruler suspected settling down with a wife and raise a family would keep you alive, but was that even possible in the game? A question brought him back to the present. "Oh, um... yeah. It's sorta going okay," he answered, frowning. "I guess I made a sword, but I'm not sure how good it is." Since they were still in town, Ruler wasn't sure if it was a good idea to show the weapon. "Once we get out on the road, I'll show you," he decided. Turning his gaze back to sensei, he said, "Have you at least thought about weapons? I've started crafting some... and I could make both of you one, if you'd like." For a price. He couldn't run a deficit, not with his current funds. As they talked, the north-west gate came into view.
