Paxilon rolled over in bed to look at his sister sleeping. It was so late in the night that it was almost morning. He could hear something akin to crickets outside the inn, chirping away softly. The air in the inn was the perfect temperature to be relaxing. By all rights, he should be in the mood to sleep. But he definitely was in no mood to do so. He closed his eyes and tried to force sleep upon himself. With a steadying breath, he examined himself. He was physically drained. They had been straight questing for days. Fights had broken out left and right. They were alive, but worn out. He wouldn't be surprised if his sister slept for a little longer than twenty minutes this time. But why couldn't he sleep?
He supposed he was also slightly emotionally drained from this game. After they had stopped sprinting through the game itself, news had caught up with them in Tolbana. Hundreds had committed suicide on the second day. Hundreds had died from the most basic enemies in the game. Some had even died from PKers. And the siblings were just steamrolling through the game, as if it were nothing. Meanwhile, people who were stuck behind them were just dying off like fruit flies. People who had joined the game purely for the experience of it. They were all dying. He had done very little to help anyone.
He opened his eyes and looked back to his sister. She was always better at forcing herself to sleep. He sat up and rolled out of bed, in nothing but soft cloth pants and shirt, and he walked to his window. Opening the window, he listened as the cricket noise increased in volume. His sister grunted a bit in her sleep, obviously slightly disturbed by the noise change. He sighed and breathed in the cool night air. He tried to look up to the stars, but the light in the street was glaring a little too brightly. If he remembered correctly, the other side of the inn had no lights. Nodding to himself, he very carefully crawled out of the window on to the ledge that was built in. In the real world, he would worry about the ledge breaking. But, this was an immortal object. He could kick it all day long and it would never break.
Pushing himself against the wall, Pax scooted slowly on to the slightly angled roof of the inn. He made it safely, luckily enough. With a stretch, he started walking slowly to the other side of the roof, doing his best not to make too much noise. Reaching the top of the inn, where both slants converged, Pax realised he was correct about there being no lights on the other side of the inn. He walked over to the dark side of the inn and sat down, hugging his knees close to his chest. He looked up at the stars and smiled a sad, broken smile. He couldn't afford to have his sister wake up and see him like this. He was her rock, after all. Even if he pushed her around and made fun of her and made all of the bad decisions for both of them. He would be there for her until she told him not to be. Or until he died.
"Hell of a night for breaking down," he muttered quietly to himself, eyes threatening to fill up with salty tears. SAINT

”Then maybe you shouldn't be breaking down?”
Saint's voice could be heard from further in the shadows along the roof of the inn. If he looked down towards her, he'd notice she was leaning against the wall as well. However, her legs were laid out in front of her and she seemed to just be sitting. Her face echoed an eerie calmness as her brown hair shifted. She had tied it up since they last met.
”Well, actually, letting it all out is probably healthy every now and then, so if you want the roof to yourself to cry, I'll leave,” she hummed with a small smile. Saint closed her eyes and let out a sigh. She had come up here to think among other things. Tiecoon and a few of her guild members were in the inn below them sleeping. Saint, however, wasn't one for sleep much of the time. She had a bad habit of staying up, and the game's situation only made it worse.
Contrary to Paxilon, there was an eerie calmness to her. Saint was different than Paxilon. It wasn't that she was stronger than him, no, the reason she wasn't sobbing herself was because she refused to do it. Saint was her guild's rock. If she buckled, then they would buckle. Saint had to swallow her emotions like heavy stones that sat in her stomach. It probably wasn't the healthiest way to handle everything, but it was what she'd do.
Saint leaned forward as she rested an elbow to prop up her arm against her knee. She leaned her cheek at an angle before glancing from the sky to Paxilon. ”Although it's a nice night- it'd be a shame to spend it indoors.” | BECAUSE I'M SLEEPLESS WITHOUT YOU |

Pax let out an audible noise of surprise upon realising he wasn't the only one on the roof. No one usually ventured on rooftops in the towns. He actually really fancied them himself. They were a nice reprieve from being forced to talk to people on the ground. Plus, something about being above everyone else made him feel at ease. He looked further down the roof to see a silhouette of a female. He couldn't quite make out who it was from the face nor the figure, but he never forgot peoples' voices.
"Oh, hi, Saint, I didn't think anyone would be up here," Pax choked down his tears for now, "I was just coming up here for fresh air, that's all. The inn's air smells of bread all day long."
Pax was suddenly aware of his dry, cracking throat and stuffy nose. Blinking a couple times, he realised the darkness hadn't been what caused him to not be able to recognise Saint's face. It had been the swelling tears blurring his vision. When had he started crying?
With a sniffle he patted the roof next to where he was sitting, "It's been a while since I cried in front of someone. But, I'm not against sharing a silly roof, really. The real question is if you can deal with the noise."
He chuckled a bit to himself and wiped away a bit of moisture from his eyes. He wasn't going to break out in a waterfall of tears, but he could use someone to talk to that didn't have any reason to judge him for his sins. With a slight sniffle, he looked up to the stars for some kind of answer to the problems they were all facing. Finding none, he instead decided to find comfort in the fact that Kayaba had made stars at all. Regaining a little bit of his composure, Pax laughed.
"It is definitely too nice a night to be wasted indoors," he said with a grin, "but you can't expect a bunch of gamers to fully appreciate the concept, can you?" SAINT

”Eh~? Why not?” she asked with a coy grin as she moved to shuffle over towards him. ”You think you're the only edges roof top protagonist?” Her voice was light and fluffy, as if this was just a normal conversation in a street and not a conversation in a death game in the middle of the night. ”Ah, fresh air is nice... even if it is virtual! It's amazing how realistic this game feels. If I had known it was this real, I would have clamored for the beta... I wonder how the game felt before it was a death game,” she mused with a gentle smile.
”Well crying isn't necessarily a bad thing! It's good to let it all out every now and then. I can handle the noise.” She leaned against the wall next to him, her eyes shifting up to the sky in the distance. The roof of the next floor hid the sky for the most part from the top, but if you got above the trees, you could see the stretch of sky outside of the floating castle. Right now, a stretch of stars laid before them.
”Eh? I wouldn't underestimate gamers! I could admire the stars just fine from my apartment's balcony- and my laptop charger reached out there!” she spoke with a firm nod. ”But yeah... are you alright? I assume you weren't crying from how pretty the stars were.” | BECAUSE I'M SLEEPLESS WITHOUT YOU |

"Well, if I'm a protagonist, I won't die nearly as easy, right? Therefore, I must do all the things a protagonist would do! Like sulk on a rooftop alone. Which means you are severely reducing my chances of survival, you know."
Pax gave Saint an awkward smile. He wasn't very good at proper social interactions, really. He didn't know how to handle talking to people about anything serious, but he knew this was weird. Sneaking out on to a rooftop to cry, only to be stopped by someone else who was out on the rooftop in the middle of the night? Maybe he was a protagonist after all. He laughed and knocked on the wooden slats of the inn's roof.
"The game feels about the same, I'd say," Pax mused about the entire ordeal with the game. He was in a very strange mood now. "Some people might say otherwise, because they've been trapped against their will. But in all honesty, it's still beautiful. Too often people let fear cloud what they can see in front of them. I mean, there was always the threat of real life death, it was just never an idea forced upon people."
Pax shook his head and looked around the sky for constellations he could create himself. He stayed quiet as Saint talked and leaned up next to him. He couldn't think of much to say. And then he heard her ask how he was. He stayed quiet for a good minute. His face took on a rather neutral expression as he thought hard on what was actually wrong with him. Self-analyzing was one of the things he was good at. Thinking about it after someone had snapped him from his sulking, he wasn't sad about the people he'd left behind.
"No, I'm not sad because I left so many people helpless," he debated with himself out loud, "Anyone who decided to kill themselves probably were people I couldn't have helped anyway. Maybe I could have helped all of those people who got killed by the weakest of enemies . . . but that would've put me extremely far behind."
Pax closed his eyes and thought about his sister. The two of them were ridiculously close. Why were they trying so hard to win this game? Another question he needed to think on.
"No, this was the best choice of action," Pax looked up at Saint with a fiery smile, directing his next set of words more for her, "I'm fine now. The stars aren't quite the reason I wanted to cry. I was thinking about all of the people who've died already."
He stood up, as his rear end was starting to ache a bit from the stiff wooden slats, "All of those people reminded me of our other younger sister. She died in a car crash right in front of me. One of those, 'if only I'd saved her' things, you know? Kinda ruins my day every now and again. I was thinking of how I could've saved all of those people who've died, but I know I couldn't have done anything for most of them. If anything, bringing my sister along with me so that we could level faster than everyone is the best course of action!"
He laughed a bit and gave Saint a thumbs up, "The sooner we beat this game, the sooner people stop dying! That's why this was the best option for us. We're some of the best gamers in the world, see. Landed ourselves in the top 10th percentile in almost every game we play. That's why we're so hell bent on being the best. If we continue to play this like any other game, we'll beat it before anyone even knows it!"
With a smile, he turned back to admire the stars. He was still a little sad, though. "It would be a hell of a burden to say everyone's relying on me, though. So, I'll tell you now I'm not doing this for anyone but me. That would make me falter beyond belief. No, I'll beat this game for purely selfish reason. To say that I was trapped here. That I became the best. That I bested everything that was thrown at me! I'll be a national - if not global - hero!" SAINT

”I dunno. There are a lot of shows where the protagonist dies at the very end. You might end up dying- and then you'd have done all that hard work sulking for nothing,” she hummed softly. Then, a coy grin spread across her face as she leaned towards him a bit. ”Or maybe I'm the romantic interest who heightens your chances! As she spoke, her eye brows would wiggle up and down in an outrageous fashion before she leaned back to her own personal space.
Saint leaned forward, eyeing the stars intently as she took in a deep breath and let it out. Her murky green eyes seemed to be hiding some hidden emotions that lurked beneath her calm smile as he spoke. ”Yeah, but in nature, the prettiest things tend to be the most poisonous... people nowadays are use to living comfortably for the most part. This game is taking that comfortable life away and forcing them into something more brutal- I'm amazing we havent had more deaths already.”
She clicked her tongue as he continued to speak. ”People who died by the weakest monster underestimated the game. They didn't respect it. You have to respect a game. Every game is hundreds of hours of work- every leaf on a tree is the work of several different people. If you run into danger without thinking- without rationality, you will die. It was like that centuries ago when people hunted- even a small boar could gore a foolish man to death. Those with no respect for their lives or the environment around them will most likely die.”
As he stood, she watched from her seated position. At the mention of his sister, her calm expression didn't change. She had already said her bit on the people who died. Saint didn't have anything to say about his deceased sister. Saying she was sorry about it was shallow. Her eyes shifted to the side with a sly grin as the topic turned to gaming. ”Top ten percentile eh? How nice!” she hummed. Saint thought the siblings had seemed familiar. She had come across them in other games before- at least Kiera for sure.
”The raids in this game require around forty people. Any less and it becomes unbalanced and death is imminent. Your sister and you may become top level, but you will be useless in raids if you dont have a strong backing. If you want to beat the game, raids are essential- so you will need at least 38 other high level people-- and that's assuming the number doesnt grow at higher floors beyond 5. Focusing on your sister and yourself is fine, but dont speak about such lofty targets like beating this game as if it'd be your own victory. Sword Art Online is the first game of it's type. If you play it like other games, you will die. If you want to beat the game, you'll have to become a guild master. Have you ever ran a multi group raiding guild? Furthermore, have you ever gamed with anyone other than your sister in real life? Do you understand what is needed? Or are you going to keep talking like this isn't an MMORPG and it's some one person game you can beat single handedly?”

Pax had ignored the romance thing entirely. Not that he was embarrassed -maybe a little bit- but the girl reminded him of his own mother. Her hair looked the same when it was tied up and everything. That was saying nothing about that constant soft smile. Pax shook his head and listened carefully to Saint. With every word Saint spoke, Pax was losing more and more of his confidence. Eventually, dread filled Pax to his core. It hadn't dawned on him until just that moment that he would achieve literally nothing without a proper guild. But he wasn't well suited to handling things that involved more than four people. He would absolutely flop.
"Saint," he took a moment after saying her name to arrange his emotions. He could only think of one course of action, "I would never be able to lead a guild. I'm insufferable, and I find that most people I meet are the same. Either they don't try hard enough, or they don't choose to understand what they're doing."
He broke out into laughter and put his hand out to steady himself, but there was nothing there. Falling into a sitting position, Pax blew air out of his nose. "It's like you said, Saint. The people who died to the weakest mobs just didn't respect the game. And here I am, going along like I can be some exception. I'm trying to not respect the game. A fool and his head are easily parted, my mom use to say."
That phrase had several meanings, really. It fit rather well for SAO, though. One wrong calculation from him or his sister and whack, no more head. Understanding that he needed to be more careful didn't exactly remedy his issue of needing a guild to have his prowess fully realised. With a sigh, he recognised that almost every quest on the first floor had been tailored to help newcomers understand that MMO's aren't solo games. With as much as he hated working with people he didn't know very well, even he realised that he'd get nowhere fast by himself, and not much further with just his sister. But he definitely couldn't handle making friends with a rag tag group of noobs who would just die on him immediately. After another moment of silent thinking he made his decision and nodded.
"Maybe I can't do everything solo," he began explaining to Saint, trying to erase the idea that she looked like his mother from his mind, "but I'll have to wait until maybe the fifth floor before I join a guild. I'll do my best to work together with the others when it comes to boss fights. As morbid as it sounds, I don't think I can rely on many people until the weaker ones are weeded out. Relying on someone who will falter easily under stress will likely get me killed. So no, I'll wait until a gnarly bunch of players rise out of the chaos. Then I'll test to see if I'm just sufferable enough for them to allow me into their ranks. Then, I will be an extension of that guild. And that guild will prosper, even if I have to die for it. Well, I won't die, but the attitude will be there."
When he looked at Saint, a fire was burning in his eyes that matched his determination to get out of this hell hole of a game. An objective had finally made itself clear to him. SAINT

Saint continued to smile passively as horror and dread filled the other. She didn't seem to be effected by her own words, but then again, her experience was vastly different from Paxilon's. In her gaming career, she had lead countless raids and managed several guilds. She was someone built to thrive in an environment like Sword Art Online. Saint had sat on the corpses of other players and raid bosses for years- she was a PvPvE mastermind who thrived under stress and when challenged. Challenges made her blood boil with excitement. It was only natural that a game like Sword Art Online would attract a few players like her.
”Well, that's quite literal for this game!” she hummed at the mention of a fool and his head being easily parted. ”But yes, this game is an MMO, not respecting that would be a bad idea. I'm glad you've realized that.” Her voice trailed off as he began to try explaining his plan to wait to join a guild. Frankly, the plan annoyed her. It sounded like he was just going to lazily wait alone- as if expecting people to find their own way to him. Saint crossed her arms and let out a soft ”Tuff...” noise, like a soft sigh.
”If slapping you didn't count as an attack, I would have done it right now,” she hummed with a soft grin. ”You can go ahead and wait if you want, but it's rather lazy if you think about it. The first five floors are going to be crucial and somewhat brutal, so I understand wanting to wait it out to see who lives- but you're going to miss out on being a part of the foundation. However, you seem pretty set in your way. But, if you think for a moment that you'll be the one testing them, then you're an idiot. Pax sighed and made a mental note to clarify things more appropriately whenever talking to people while he was in a state of being drunk on his emotions. As he listened to Saint go on her calm tirade at him, he couldn't help but smile. He knew that she might take it as him not listening, or even finding her words amusing, but no. She sounded exactly like his mother. He hadn't talked to his own mom in roughly a year. She would show up at home for a few hours at a time, and always while he was sleeping for some reason. They had grown increasingly distant for a while, her oversea trips taking away his last remaining parent. In a way, Saint's monologue made him homesick, and a couple tears started welling up again. God, he was being such a baby.
Pax shook his head a couple seconds after Saint finished talking and gave her a serious look, "I don't mean to assume that I'd be some prized member of a guild. Nor do I intend to test them. It's more along the lines of testing myself to make sure none of the members will hate me enough to ruin a mission. I'd hate for something like that to happen. And I don't have enough faith in myself to help a guild's foundation grow. I'm rather abrasive, see. Or rather, that's what most people have found when gaming with me."
Pax let out a light snort at the idea of starting his own guild, "I could imagine people like you starting up a promising guild only to have someone like me ruin it from the inside. I've never played well with others. I'd much sooner do a 1v4 objective game before I did a 4v4. In a 1v4, I've actually never lost. But I've lost plenty of evenly matched games. To be forced to cooperate with a massive group of people would give me an ulcer. So no, it's not that no guild would be worthy of me right now, I think. It's more like, I'd prefer to be disposable. If I'm part of the foundation of the guild and end up doing something to ruin the whole thing? That would be devastating. But if I'm just some renegade mercenary type? Well, that would make it easier for everyone . . ."
He turned his eyes back to the horizon, looking more at the enormous mountain located at the center of the floor.
"That mountain," he pointed at the distant, looming mass of ground, "has a quest on it that I want to do with my sister tomorrow. If she were to go before I woke up tomorrow, I'd be rather upset, personally. Something like that, but on a much larger scale. That's the kind of thing that would happen to break up any kind of guild I enter.
He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair with a tired huff. Sleep was catching up to him faster than he thought it would have. Then again, he didn't expect to find someone else lurking on the roof. He smiled at the thought of such uncertain circumstances. Little surprises were dangerous, but amusing. SAINT

Saint grinned as he began to clarify what he meant with such a serious look. Her grin wasn't malevolent or anything. No, it was one of genuine interest in what he was saying. Saint was curious about his mind worked. She had heard of him and his sister before, but she had never actually spoken to them. So Saint was curious at how exactly his mind turned- how did the cogs in his little brain work? [break] [break] ”Well, I'm glad you understand that. For a second there I was worried you thought yourself a gaming god or something!” she hummed softly before leaning against the roof. ”I'm glad you're testing yourself and trying to be a decent person, but if someone can't put aside their dislike for someone enough to do a mission and does something that endangers people's lives- then that's their fault as a person. Don't think too much about it. This is a game of survival. Whether we like each other or not has nothing to do with how we work together.”[break] [break] When he mentioned her guild falling apart because of him, a loud laugh escaped her lips. Saint buckled over with laughter, as if the thought genuinely humored her. It was a ludicrous thought. ”Ah! That would never happen. My guilds aren't something that can easily fall apart for silly reasons like a person like you.” As she spoke, Saint stretched her arms up. "I've never thought myself a gaming god, per se," Pax flustered a bit, realising this statement was not as true as he wanted it to be, "but I've always been good at games, you know? Ironically, I think that's all I've ever been good at. Although, I definitely have not played enough MMO's to be nearly as good as I am in other games."
Pax didn't interrupt her next words, though. He didn't think he had the words to describe all the times he'd been let down by others for the stupidest of reasons. Maybe it would be different, considering this was actually life or death now, but he had a feeling he couldn't just run up to the next person that he thought would be a good team mate and just start a guild with them. These things took time, which he felt he certainly did not have in a game like this.
Listening to her laugh at him made his mouth curl up a bit, a distasteful remark boiling at the tip of his tongue like poison getting ready to be spat. Luckily, she continued talking before the words could leave his mouth. The cruel acid that had slowly built up on his expression melted away when he was struck with the realisation. Her guild? Pax's lips curled into a thin smile. He had always been good at reading people, and he could tell she was more than sincere. He wouldn't be surprised if she had basically gutted someone over making a mistake like that.
"That, my dear rooftop friend," he said with an almost sinister sneer, but not quite a malicious one, "is exactly the kind of attitude a guild leader needs. I find too many leaders are sentimental about things like people they've known for years! If that person being a part of the equation leads to defeat or turmoil, they shouldn't be in the equation at all!"
Pax put his hands over his face and laughed a little awkwardly, "I'm sorry. I don't mean to get so energetic about that. It's just a problem I've faced a few too many times. I could never understand why someone would put another person above their chances for victory. Maybe I take my games too seriously, but the logic is ever more sound in this game. Putting someone above your chance of victory is putting them above your own survival."
"Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe my head's up my ass," Pax slapped his hand lightly against his leg methodically, as if beating out a rhythm, "but if you're adamant in that philosophy, I would definitely not be opposed to joining your guild sometime in the future."
He smiled and looked at Saint. He might not have ever learned how to talk to people properly about things, but he was sure he had made himself more clear in these words tonight than he'd ever tried to clarify in all his years of existence.
Looking at Saint, it suddenly occurred to him that he was probably presuming things once again and his face scrunched up into a look of apology, "If you'd have me, that is." SAINT
