Marth stretched and raised his arms above his head as a yawn escaped him. It was the crack of dawn and the sun hadn't even risen as he made his way out of the Town of Beginnings. NPCs were already milling about as he passed by them though most of the players were possibly sleeping. Spending the night in an alleyway with a sword on his hip and arms behind his head, counting the stars until his restless mind succumbed to the idea of slumber. Marth had never been so thankful for his upbringing or the ability to sleep anywhere if he chose to do so. He rose early, his internal clock telling him that it was time for a morning run, only to remember that he wasn't in his world any more. Aincrad. The young warrior lowered his arms and stared at the rolling green hills. He watched as animals grazed and stared aimlessly with beady eyes or reddened ones. Careful not to get too close, his gaze drifting to the rusted sword on his hip or the worn clothes covering his body. There wasn't much to go off of. He was weak and if that wasn't humiliating enough, he was alone. Marth took a seat at the edge of the city's gates and watched as the first few rays of sunlight started to change the sky's color. I know what I have to do but I guess I need other people to do it.It wasn't that he was adverse to talking to others, rather, he was giving them time. Space. A moment to adjust before throwing someone into the bitter reality. He accepted a quest not too long ago but needed someone to go with. Sending a beacon into the sky, he situated himself and waited while watching the sun rise. Paxilon was beginning to walk out of the city when he saw the beacon. At first, he brushed it out of his mind, as he hadn't seen his sister for almost the entire day. As he neared the city gates, however, he thought about the few people he'd already ran into. Surely, helping this person wouldn't kill him. With a sigh, he walked out of the gates and held his chest out high. He might not have been to sleep yet, be he guessed he had about five more hours before he really needed sleep at all. He looked around the gates and saw him. With a frown, he internally cursed his luck. The boy couldn't have been in his late teens. This would be the second kid tonight he'd helped out. But, he'd already decided to help this person out, and he would certainly try, if nothing else.
"You're up late," Pax stated as he walked over to this new acquaintance, although they might've woken up early. He looked over to the horizon and the warming colors of the sunrise. He muttered a curse under his breath. He'd been out for much longer than he thought. His sister was going to gut him thoroughly. He looked back to the kid with a hard smile, "You need that extra plus one, right? I'll help you out, if you want." MARTH

He was almost ready to doze off again. There was something about a warm summer breeze and the peace of quiet to lull someone into sleep. The beacon continued to shine but he was quiet for the most part. That was until he heard someone else talking to him. Glancing up, he noticed another player standing nearby and tilted his head to the side. He half expected no one to show up if he was being entirely honest. Most players were either trying to sleep this off like it was a dream or engross themselves in other activites amongst their peers. " Thanks," he replied. " I was almost worried that I wasn't going to catch a worm at all." His minor joke, though it could have also been a pun would've probably sailed over anyone's head. Rising to his feet and crossing his arms behind his head out of habit, Marth looked the other player over. He had a few better equips and seemed to be sure of himself. Marth heard about the idea of player killing and hurting others as a means of entertainment or gathering equipment. But it was only the first floor and he doubt anyone had any real skill unless they were a beta tester. " I'm Marth, nice to meet'cha." Opening up his menu , he sent the other an invite. Paxilon almost burst out laughing. It was very late for him, and his tired state was very loving of humor at the moment. He kept from exploding with laughter, however, and instead cracked a sharp smile. For a first impression, the kid was off to a good start. Early morning or not, Pax appreciated good humor. Especially in situations where humor was not appreciated. With a stern nod, Pax accepted the party invite, "That's why I'm a night owl. Owls don't need to worry about gross little things like worms. I'm Paxilon, by the way. A pleasure to meet you."
He held his hand out for a moment to shake, and then he turned to the horizon. He pointed to where most pig were going to spawn and turned back to look at Marth, "Most pigs will spawn about over there. That'll be the best spot for us to get this quest done quickly. However, there's a chance that two will end up spawning at the same time, and let me tell you. If you're not prepared for a second slab of ribs, you run out of barbecue sauce far too quickly."
He chuckled a little bit at that. He loved food way too much, probably. Most of his jokes usually had something to do with food. He raised an eyebrow at Marth and pointed further down the field, "However, if you want to play it safe, there's a spot where there's usually only about one pig at a time. I'll let you decide." MARTH

This guy had a real sense of humor and it took the edge off. Just because they were inside of a death game didn't mean they couldn't have fun. The somber air in the town square was a mood ruiner for sure and Marth left as quickly as he could. Spending his night watching the sky, talking to NPCs, and examining the world around him felt like a better option in comparison to feeling sorry for himself. Maybe this guy shared his sentiments or at least decided to pick himself up instead of whine. " Owls tend to prefer the night," he said. " Seems you're a bit out of your zone." The teenager grinned and crossed his arms behind his head. Mirth in his eyes and a brazen smile on his face, he felt more at home than ever. " You really like to make puns, huh?" Marth grinned and shrugged before turning towards the open plains. He watched the animals grazing and everything seemed so serene, you wouldn't expect that any one of them could cause his death. Or maybe the deaths of other players unlucky enough to be ensnared or go at it alone. " No sense in taking the easy way out, two at a time sounds just fine to me." If he was going to get better then taking the easy way was just going to cripple him. Go hard or go home. But the second part isn't an option anymore." Hey, how do you know so much about the," he paused. " Wait, I know you!" Marth remembered the breaks that he'd take inbetween studying and homework. Watching Lets Play videos and live streams of games, though that was probably half the reason he was stuck in Aincrad now. But this guy seemed so familiar. He knew who he was but if only he could put his finger on the name. Then it struck him. " You're that guy who streams games and reviews them right?!" He grinned. " Paxilon!" So even big-time gamers could get stuck in a game like this. Maybe he didn't have a lot to worry about after all. Pax was taken aback by the kid's attitude. If Marth survived, Pax was sure he'd show more promise than most veteran gamers that were in this game with him. Of course, attitude wasn't enough if skills weren't up to par as well. With a nod, Pax immediately retorted, "Yeah, well, I'm definitely out of my element. Mornings just aren't my thing. Been up all night helping a couple noobs and the like. Your beacon caught me as I was heading back to Tolbana."
"Of course I like to make puns," Pax blew air from his nose in amusement, "I mean, sword play and word play are only one letter in difference, right? Gotta be good at one of 'em, don't I?"
Pax really admired the kid's attitude towards killing pigs. He nodded, a coy smile curling itself onto his face as Marth chose the more difficult of the routes. He immediately started walking, motioning for Marth to follow him. He had only taken a couple steps before it happened. It finally happened. Someone pointed out who he was. For once, he didn't have to brag about himself without any proof of who he was. Plus, his sister wasn't there to ruin it. Honestly, he could have cried. He couldn't allow himself to lose his cool in front of someone who was possibly a fan of his.
He nodded a looked back at Marth, "I play them more than review them honestly, but yes. That's me, friend! However, don't get too comfortable around me. I haven't done much in this game yet."
He huffed after that last part. To the casual gamer, it would look like he'd been playing this game for between three and four weeks. But honestly he'd only been here for what? Four days? Five? He would've liked to chalk it up as pure skill, but luck definitely played a role in almost everything he'd done so far, and he wasn't one to not give luck it's due. MARTH

Marth laughed lightly. Noobs and veterans, that sounded more up his alley than the idea of people who were dead and those who weren't. He couldn't imagine playing a game without brushing up on it first. But he could see that a lot of players weren't exactly up to speed on the lingo or the mechanics. Thankfully, the guide compiled by beta testers was proving to be more helpful than not. He wasn't following it to a T but it did serve as a nice reminder and refresher. " Well, that's mighty generous of you." He fell into step with Paxilon and smiled at the other player. This wasn't the time to lose his head over someone that he idolized or at least looked up to a bit. The gaming community was vast and he was lucky enough to be with one of its top competitors. " I knew it was you. Seems like we're in luck if we have you on the frontlines." Marth wondered what exactly the gamer knew. If he could provide any handy tips or starting points, it would be useful. Maybe he could pick his brain about questing or fighting monsters. Shortcuts wouldn't help in the long run but they would be nice. " Don't sweat it, any progress is great especially when your life is on the line," he reassured. " I'll catch up to you in no time." The pair approached the growing herd of angry pigs and Marth felt as though electricity was running up and down his spine. His fingers curled around the hilt of his sword as he took a stance, one that he'd seen in the images released on the game's website. " I already read up on Sword Arts and Basic Attacks, since you're the stronger out of the two of us why don't you take the lead?" Drawing his sword from its sheath, the rusted blade glinted mockingly at him in the first few rays of sun. He wasn't going to let this keep him down. He'd get better equipment at some point and better at fighting. It all started here. " Ready when you are." Despite how tired he should've been, Pax was brimming with energy. Being recognised -finally- really topped off his reserves. He only laughed a bit and shook his head at being called generous. He could tell this kid not only knew him, but actually appreciated him. He grinned at that thought. Lucky to have him? Pax would have instantly agreed if Saint's words weren't echoing in his ears.
"In luck?" Pax shook his head fervently, pulling his sword out from its sheath and holding his arm out to equip his small shield, "I'm just one of the many people who'd be on the front line. Maybe I'm better than most, but without the others, I'd be literally useless."
Pax shook his shield hand lightly. He still wasn't entirely use to fighting with something on his arm. He wondered for a moment if this is what every character he'd played throughout all of his favourite games felt. It was certainly something he could appreciate now, though. As different as it was, the weight on his arm made him feel much safer. He looked at Marth and shrugged, "If any progress were good enough, I'd still be in the beginner town, just farming up these pigs."
He dropped his shoulders from the shrug with a vicious, almost snarling, grin, "Catch up to me? That's awful ambitious of you. I respect that."
As they continued walking, Pax could feel Marth's desire to fight. He chuckled a bit out loud. That was a very good thing for someone so young to be feeling. In youth, you could mold that into more than just a desire. If one had the skill, but lacked the desire, they would never achieve much. But even with no skill, a deep enough fire could burn a world down. Pax glanced over at Marth with a smirk. This kid was going to accomplish things.
"I'm sorry, you read about how to do things?" Pax snickered a bit and shook his head, pointing at Marth's feet, "Your stance is a little too narrow. I could push you over easily."
With that, he began calmly walking towards the nearest pig, pulling his sword above his head in an arc, "You have to get a feel for it! Just trusting a book will get you killed."
His sword gleamed in the light, charging the sword skill as the pig took notice of him. He raised his shield up in anticipation of the always obvious forward charge. He lowered his stance and heard his sword ting ever so lightly. The mob rushed at him, as the pigs were wont to do. He stepped forward, not just taking the impact of the pig's attack, but pushing against it. The swine's face slammed into his shield, and he shoved it back, using the momentum of its attack that had been bounced back at it. As the pig staggered backwards, he brought his sword down in a diagonal arc, slashing his blade across the its snout. All of this had happened in the course of just a few seconds. MARTH

If Marth wasn't sure of himself, he would have thought that Paxilon was making fun of him or at least poking at him a little. He glanced at the veteran player with a raised eyebrow as he widened his stance slightly. His grandpa taught him to keep both feet on the ground and coin in his pocket but the latter had almost nothing to do with the subject at hand. The sword in his hand felt heavy but he was able to hold it without his wrist aching. Watching Paxilon face off against the pig, his eyes were trained on the movement of the blade and the shield as they worked in tandem. A lightbulb which constantly flicked on and off in Marth's head lit up once more. He knew exactly what he had to do. " A feel for it, huh?" Once the pig staggered and began to sway from side to side, the young warrior pulled back his arm and his sword glowed a fluorescent green. He kicked off on his right foot and rushed towards the pig. Swing his blade down in an arc to slash through the pig with a red line showing the break in data. His eyes widened as he felt the system guiding his arm and steadily backed off as the pig staggered again. Its HP dropped significantly through their combined attack and he flashed his counterpart a sly grin. " Like that?" From the corner of his eye, he could see another grazing pig. " And this?" Turning on his heel and hurrying towards the grazing animal, Marth sliced its side with his blade. The pig squealed and he caught aggro rather quickly but danced away laughing all the while. Hurrying to Paxilon's side, he readied his stance though keeping his feet apart just as the other told him. " Get ready!" PAXILONMARTH used SLANT and dealt 11 DMG to ANGRY PIG. Pax watched as Marth's blade struck, almost in beat with his own strike. They did a moderately increased amount of damage to it, and Pax's face beamed. The kid was a natural. He nodded, a smile growing on his face, "Yes! Exactly like that!"
Pax stepped back and nodded, "Now we do tha- Wait, like what now?"
Pax turned his head and his smile melted away. The kid was good, but he was cocky. He should've seen it. A grimace molded itself in place of what use to be a grin. He'd let his reputation blind him from seeing that Marth wasn't like the kid from earlier. Marth had confidence.
He watched as Marth did next to no damage to the other pig, and he would have laughed if it weren't for what kind of game they were in now. He took the opportunity to slash at the mob in front of him, keeping it staggered as best he could. He then turned to face the pig that Marth was bringing directly to them. He crouched slightly, readying his shield again.
"You wanna get cocky?" Pax grinned, frustration dripping through his teeth, "Fine. Attack this one in front of us."
He put his sword directly behind him, charging it up again. This, time, however, his target was not the boar charging at him. In his peripheral, Pax could see the other boar approaching again. It wasn't charging, so he had enough time to time this right. He stepped his foot forward like before, slamming his shield into the attacking snout, making the pig bounce back and stagger a bit. With a spin, he launched his sword skill, barely missing Marth's side. His sword whipped around in a green arc, slashing through the first boar they had attacked.
"You already know about the aggro system, don't you?" Pax gritted his teeth. This kid was a right pain in the ass. MARTH

[attr="class","pricklebear1"] For a moment, Marth was reminded of his uncle and would have said so if not for almost being sliced by a quick blade. He looked down then up to Paxilon with an incredulous look. Even if he was grateful that the other had quick reflexes he didn't want to be skewered because of them. Raising his hands defeatedly, he shook his head and sighed. This was great. He almost got cleaved and had to deal with an irrtate man who was probably around his age or older. Does it really matter? No, it didn't. " The aggro system is centered around the last hit and who is in the monster's sights," he said. " If you hit it, it goes to you. If I hit it, it goes back to me." As their first prey was staggered, Marth rushed in front of Paxilon. His sword glowed as he swung it adjacent to the beast's snout, seeing the red line of data once more. Pushing away from the beast, his gaze flicked towards the other one but he made a conscious effort to talk to Paxilon at the same time. Keep calm. Move.Marth teetered from his left foot to his right. He had to time this right. The second pig was regaining its footing. His gaze flicked to the other and then back. " That is why I did it." Just as the second pig set its sights on Paxilon, Marth hurried in front of the youtuber and darted to forward to strike the pig again. The two clashed and Marth felt a surge of pain echo through him. Glancing up towards his HP bar, it dipped somewhat and he muttered a curse. " Going one at a time isn't going to get this done and I don't want to die anymore than you do," Marth said. " We take them out by switching back and forth." He looked over his shoulder. " Since you have the greater amount of strength and equipment on your side, you mow them down." The second pig was staggered again but the first set its eyes on Marth. The warrior turned on his heel and rushed away from the pig. Circling around the second and Paxilon, the first was chasing after him ravenously. " I'll divert their attention from you and make it easier!" The second pig would be staggered for only a bit longer leaving a window open for Paxilon to attack. " Is that cocky to you, because where I come from," he continued. " That's intuitive thinking." The pig squealed and tried to ram Marth from behind but he moved out of its reach. Pax had to admit to himself that he admired the kid. He did not, however, appreciate the unneeded mob attention. He snarled as Marth explained the aggro system to him. He would have said something snarky, but he had all attention devoted to these pigs. He and his sister hadn't been so cocky about this. They had taken them down one at a time, to reduce the amount of chance there was that something went wrong. As he watched Marth go to work, a sly grin worked its way on to his face. He wasn't angry at the kid- far from it. In fact, he found the kid to be giving him a challenge. A challenge he would gladly accept.
He watched as Marth danced about, got hit, and danced away. The kid had a decent air about him. A bit incredulous with his combat thinking, but he was young. He'd grow out of that. Pax listened to Marth go on. He wasn't one for many words in combat, preferring instead to devote all energy he could to the battle itself. He focused on the pig that wasn't chasing Marth and slashed his sword through it, using the momentum to bring the sword back to charge a skill. He jumped to the side of the boar, and launched the skill, slashing through the pig's data. He looked over at Marth, who was almost comically getting chased by the first pig.
"I gotta say yes, to be honest," Pax yelled at Marth, grunting as the pig smacked it's head against his shield, "what you're doing is definitely very cocky." MARTH

As much as he wasn't sure that this was the best possible way to finish the quest, he wasn't going to go back now. Marth kept up the jog and hummed a tune to himself. It was his school's anthem or at least a version of it. He wasn't always paying attention to the songs and such. More engrossed in his work or the last manga that he wanted to read. Speaking of which, he hoped that he didn't miss any new releases while inside of the game. It would bum him out a lot. The teen was only vaguely aware that Paxilon joined in on his show of partial idiocy when the second pig didn't come ramming into his side. He flashed the other player a smile before lunging to the side, narrowly missing the pig as it tried to ram him again. Pulling his sword back, he whistled a soft tune before rushing forward. He sliced the pig's side and red bits of data bloomed, his sword's glow fading slowly. " Eleven," he mumbled to himself. " Plus one." He struck again. Bringing it down firmly this time, the pig was stunned and he moved away. That was twelve. Its HP was merely a sliver, six out of fifty. Paxilon's words reached him and he grinned. " Finish this one off and bring that one over here!" Call him reckless or even bullheaded, Marth just wanted to see how different this world was from theirs. As far as he could see, they had too many similarities. The key ones being that there were only two things you were guaranteed to do in life. Fight for your right to exist and at some point, die. Paxilon eyed the kid. Was he humming? Whistling? Pax was caught between laughing and sighing. Marth reminded him of himself when he was much younger. Rash, confident, stupid, and most importantly, good. It made his blood boil with anticipation of what this kid was going to do in the future. He nodded as Marth yelled at him. A decent enough plan.
He gave the swine a quick slash, and sprinted over to where Marth had the other pig, charging his sword skill as he bolted. The sword slashed through the low hp pig, and he heard its HP bar deplete and felt the digital material scatter. He whipped around and prepared for the other pig to catch up to him.
"These pigs don't have many moves at all, do they?" he mused to no one in particular as he took position like he had already twice before. He shook his head in disappointment as the boar just charged at him, "I guess they are starter enemies."
He charged forward a little early and practically tried to tackle the pig with his shield, leading into his one-two combo like he had before. MARTH

Marth rushed past Paxilon as he noticed the other man coming towards him. It was a quick exchange. He could hear a shattering noise and dared to glance over his shoulder. There was one less pig but his companion was struggling with the remainder. Its HP was dipping into red and Marth readied another Sword Art. This was going to be fun. Darting forward, he sliced through the pig after Paxilon staggered it. The creature squealed before vanishing into fragmented shards. They were beautiful. Glittering and slowly going out like a light. Marth faltered slightly and stared in awe. Two pigs down.Paxilon's words brought him back to reality and he numbly shrugged. His mind caught between admiring such beauty and wanting to actually come up with a coherent response. " They move in a linear formation chasing blindly after their chosen target instead of taking notice of other things in their surroundings," he said. " Basically tunnel vision." Looking towards the other grazing pigs, he found that they were somewhat spaced out from each other. May it be programming or to allow players to sneak inbetween, he wasn't sure. But he wasn't going to let this chance go to waste. " If there was a way to make them hurt one another or blindly attack each other, I'd call them cannon fodder." Marth raised his sword and pointed towards one of the pigs on his left side before gesturing to another far to the right. There was a good amount of distance between the two of them and the animals themselves. " Don't get too comfortable yet." If they attacked too many at once, someone had to take the brunt of it. But would it be possible to make the pigs run into one another and potentially collide? " I have an experiment, let's see if we can make them do most of the damage for us. I'll attack this one," he said gesturing to the pig on his left side. " While you stay close and mow it down, then when it gets low enough, I'll attack that one and have them collide into each other." The young warrior smiled. " Or we can do as you wanted and just mow them down one by one, whichever is fun." Marth crept over though keeping out of the pig's sight and took in a breath. he sliced through the pig's side causing it to squeal before moving away. And go.
