Marth felt a tug at his sleeve and glanced behind him at a young blond-haired girl. She seemed to have been of high social standing if her clothes were any indication but the tears in her eyes along with the hiccuping sobs only reminded him of a scared child. He knelt down to listen to her and caused a quest to begin. Marth stared at her quietly while she spoke with a wavering voice and inbetween heartwrenching cries. Do NPCs have feelings in this game? When faced with a young woman crying, he knew that wasn't the right response. He should console her. Feel sorry for her and he did. He empathized but he couldn't sympathize with her because she wasn't real. Was she? They're made up of ones and zeroes just like us but if we're here, what about them?Marth sent a beacon into the sky and started impassively at it while moving to lean against the wall. The NPC quietly sobbed while rubbing her eyes. Players passing by ignored the pair or cast a wary glance only to focus on their objective. But he didn't move nor did he try to console her. He was growing sleepier as the time went on and he waited for someone to come and join him. Sliding down to sit with his back against the wall, he yawned and rubbed his eyes. I'm thinking too much lately. I blame that guy.Paxilon's breakdown stirred something inside of Marth. It wasn't remorse or guilt but unbridled curiosity. Sword Art Online was a game, nothing more, but it seemed to have consumed the people around them with dread. It was exactly what Kayaba wanted. To break their will and see how they would scatter or turn against one another. To play a form of god. He said that this was our reality now.And there was only one thing that you could do in reality. In life itself at that. Live. As frustrating as it may have been, Farms had reached a point where it just didn't seem efficient to practice his craft anymore. With how little progress he was making it seemed like he was better off questing and progressing enough to where he could enter the Labyrinth himself. Maybe after that he would find something, anything that would make it easier to level his crafting. So he took to the streets, starting his search for questing partners near the various F rank quest givers. He tried to make a habit out of helping players still trying to work their way through those quests before getting started on his own.
It wasn't long before he came across the beacon of someone looking for a party near the locket quest NPC. Copper boots clicked against the stone path as he approached the young man, bowing his head in greeting. "I assume you're looking for someone to help you with this quest?" He stood up straight and looked over at the NPC, frowning slightly as she continued to sob. He knew that she had been crying constantly since the game launched, only stopping briefly whenever someone returned her locket. Still, the level of realism was unsettling, enough to make so he had to fight his instincts to console her. He probably would've gone crazy waiting next to her for too long.
Attention turned back to the young man, regaining his smile as he did so. "I would like to help, if you don't mind. I'm familiar with it, so it shouldn't take too long." Besides, he wouldn't mind an excuse to play in the mud just a bit more. It was still one of the most simple pleasures he had encountered in the game. He had to wonder if it would still have the same charm as it did before hr realized the game was trying to kill him.

Marth had dozed off while thinking about everything. It was a bad habit. One that he'd hopefully grow out of. Though, while snoozing away, he could've sworn that he heard someone talking to him. A constant beeping caused him to open his eyes and blearily stare at a player that had approached him. They were decked out in copper plated armor and seemed friendly enough from the smile on their face. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he blinked again and noticed that it was a guy instead of any random person. Standing to his feet, Marth nodded and smiled himself though a yawn also escaped him as he stretched. " I could use all the help that I can get, thanks." He opened up his menu and sent a party invite to the other player. Once accepted, the NPC's tears would slowly dry as she spoke a soft thank you and sat down on the steps of what he assumed to be her waiting place. Turning his attention back to his teammate, he smiled. " My name is Marth by the way, nice to meet'cha," he drawled. " Farmsalot." The HUD revealed the other player's name. It was peculiar though not as much as his own and he wasn't going to judge. Crossing his arms behind his head, he turned on his heel and started making his way down the cobblestone road and towards one of the town's exits. " Are you a beta tester?" He spoke to the other as they came close again. Head bobbed in approval as he accepted the invitation, eyes darting to the corner of the screen to make note of the boy's name. "It's no problem, really. I wouldn't mind a visit to the creek anyway." His gaze settled back on Marth, a hint of excitement starting to come through in his tone. As dangerous and dreadful as this world may have been, at least there were still those simple pleasures to indulge in. He didn't even care if it made him look childish, it just sounded like a good time.
"A pleasure to meet you Marth." He followed alongside the young man, occasionally glancing over at him. Sure it wasn't as if he was going to run off, but he still felt like he needed to help keep an eye on the younger players. The thought of someone so young being taken by this silly game was almost too much for him. "Me? A beta tester?" He almost laughed at the mere suggestion, instead managing to contain it to an amused smile. "I'm flattered but no, not me. I'm not exactly a...'gamer'."
Though at this point he could hardly even call this a game. This was a new way of life for the so called 'denizens' of this place. Maybe that was why he managed to adapt as well as he had. "What about you? I imagine you were pretty excited to play." If there was one thing he knew about boys his age, it was that they loved video games. It was enough to make him wonder, just how much of the population were still in high school? Or maybe even younger? No, that was something he was better off not thinking about.

Marth walked alongside the other player who he nicknamed "Farms". " Wow, you sure seem like one or at least a guy that knows what he is doing." If his equipment and emotional assurance were any indication, Marth noted. He sighed. At least there were some individuals in the game that were holding it together when the vast majority seemed like they were falling apart. But it wasn't their faults. The change was too abrupt. They had to get used to it. Some people are just adjusting. His heart clenched in his chest. " I was excited for a change of pace." It was true. When he bought the NerveGear, it was with money that he had saved up from doing various jobs over the past few weeks. The jobs were of varying degree of personal safety and partly what led to an argument which brought him into Aincrad. Marth swallowed hard and looked forward, his smile somewhat wavering. " Didn't expect such a big one though, y'know?" He didn't expect any of this at all. Having an argument with his mom and storming out of the house only to fall into a new world. It was a miracle that he wasn't freaking out or falling apart at the seams. But it wasn't anything new either. His family were known for fighting and prevaling even against the odds. Even more so, he carried his grandfather's name and wouldn't tarnish the man's reputation by proving to be any less of a man than he was. He smiled at the idea of coming off as an experienced player. While he definitely didn't have much first hand experience compared to many, he did have a decent amount of knowledge regarding game mechanics. "It's all about asking the right questions to the right people. I guess if you draw from people with experience, you can get a little bit yourself." Thinking back to all of the people who helped him come to grips with mechanics really made him appreciate their friendships. He took comfort in knowing that he managed to repay them all for their kindness.
A change of pace, huh? Well that's certainly what this proved to be. His life here was far removed from what it was back in the real world. And as exciting as it was, he would always prefer the comfort of his own bed in the end. Though he suspected that there were some people who actually preferred their lives in the game. "I don't think any of us expected anything like this. It's a shame, but at least we can make the best of it."
It was good to see a younger person handling things as well as Marth did. So many players lacked the maturity to properly process and understand the situation they had found themselves in. Kids like this would serve as a good example to those. "So you must have friends who play, right? Anyone from school that you can be friends with?" There was no good answer to this question. Either he had friends stuck here with him or his friends were safe but he was all alone. At least Farms had asked the question enough times to be prepared for the outcome of either response.

Marth listened to Farms and smiled. At least he was modest, but the proof was in his abilities more so than anything else. " I met up with one of my classmates not too long ago," he said. " He goes by Ruler in the game." Math to the very end, couldn't escape it. " Pretty accomplished blacksmith from what I've heard but not that I wouldn't expect him to be, senpai has always been pretty smart." Hopefully, if he could find someone that could make armor, he wouldn't be left out in the cold. As far as he knew, he was the only one who was still decked out in the beginner clothing. It was a bit humiliating but also refreshing to know that he was taking things at his own pace. " I also met a girl in the game that's the same age as me but apparently she's the game's Sailor Moon, important and everyone wants to be her Tuxedo Mask." He didn't want to add on that the thought crossed his mind as well. But it wasn't as if he wanted to be with her in that way. She was more of a goal than anything else in the very beginning. Someone that he wanted to catch up to and reach, even more so than he wanted to with Paxilon. But it was her words that stuck with him more than anything and he felt like an idiot for even allowing that to happen. The pair came to the creek and Marth pulled up his pants legs to begin wading in the cool waters. " What about you?" Marth rolled up his sleeves and knelt down in the water to sift through rocks and dirt. The water felt cool between his fingertips and he could see little fish going this way and that. It was beautiful so lifelike. There was no way that he could be imagining this. If Kayaba wanted them to believe that this was their reality, he was doing a kickass job. Brows rose at the mention of the familiar name. "Ruler? I know him well. In fact, I met him doing this very quest." It seemed like almost everywhere he went these days he heard people talking about him. He must have really been making a name for himself as a weaponsmith. He nodded slowly with a proud smile as he spoke. "So you're a classmate of his? I'm glad to hear that he has friends from the real world here with him. You two should rely on each other as much as possible." He remembered how it felt to encounter one of his real world connections in game. It was like a beacon of hope in a storm of uncertainty, as cliche as that may be.
Lips pursed as Farms tried to decipher what Marth meant by 'Sailor Moon' and 'Tuxedo Mask'. He recognized the first name, probably from some advertisements he saw, but the name itself was meaningless to him. What he could get out of it was there was a girl that was important. Though what being her 'Tuxedo Mask' was supposed to mean was completely beyond him. "I...See. Well I hope that she's ok with all that." Was being her Tuxedo Mask a good thing or a bad thing? Heroes usually wore masks, but then so did villains. The whole subject was just completely baffling.
As they approached the creek Farms opened up his menu, navigating his way to the equipment screen. Last time he came to the river he just took his shoes off manually. But since then he learned that there are better ways to deal with such things, especially when you're dealing with armor. After unequipping his boots and gauntlets he followed Marth into the water, the familiar squish of mud between his toes bringing back old memories. Not just of home anymore, but of the time he could be in this world of his own free will without fear of death. Or at least had the illusion of that being the case.
As he started his search he spoke with a raised voice, ensuring Marth could hear him even if they got split apart. "I've only met one person from the real world. A friend of a friend named SnowWhite. Though my brother may be around here somewhere, so I've been keeping an eye out for him as well." Fingers ran through the mud as he scoured the area that Ruler found the locket last time. Was the location different each time? "Fortunately there's no shortage of people to befriend around here. So long as you're willing to help others, there will always be someone ready to help in return."

Marth felt water sloshing around in his shoes. It almost reminded him of his childhood and playing in the mud while his mother hurried after him. Or when they would visit the beach and he'd play in the water with his father at his heels. Glancing over his shoulder, the only other person that was there was Farms. His parents weren't there or anywhere in this world. A touch of melancholy reached Marth's eyes as he looked down at his hands. Farms continued talking and he chimed in. " Your brother is playing the game?" He asked. " That's cool, my uncle is here too." That was good, wasn't it? Well, somewhat. On one hand, his uncle was in the game with him. On the other hand, his uncle was in a death game with him. " Well, my uncle and my math teacher. I'm not sure if that is supposed to mean anything in context but I'm glad that they have each other." But that could be said lightly. Arata-oji-san and his uncle were very volatile especially together. If they didn't kill each other first, or the game did, they'd probably do it later. " A lot of people seem to be taking this situation in varying degrees," he said. " A bit hard to gauge how anyone will take the idea of friendship." It may have been a little irritating to find that the locket wasn't where it was previously, but at least that meant he got to fool around in the creek a bit more. The feeling of the mud between his fingers made him want to start making mud pies to start throwing around. Of course he couldn't do that here. It may have been enjoyable, but he was working. And as soon as this job was complete he would have to stop and carry on to the next quest.
He sighed softly and shook his head, unsure of how to respond. "It's... Well, I don't know if he's here yet, so I guess it's neither good or bad." It was beginning to feel like that may be the best case. If he didn't know where he was he didn't know if he should worry or not. At least that way he could go about his business without that pressure on him. "So your uncle is here too, is he? It sounds like you'll have no shortage of friends then." As sad as it may be, at least they could be trapped as a family.
Wait, his math teacher? Farms looked up at Marth for a moment with a puzzled expression, something about the idea of his uncle and math teacher sounding...odd. "Well uh... It sounds like the three of you have a stable support group. You should consider yourself lucky." The craftsmen decided to shove that point aside for now, focusing his attention back onto the task at hand.
Listening to his thoughts on friendship was disheartening. "I wouldn't say that." While it was true that there were those who behaved in such a way, there were just as many, if not nore, people who felt the opposite. At least that's what he kept telling himself. "All you have to do is find the people who are willing to help each other. I know it must be hard as a young man, but I'm sure you'll find plenty of new friends here."

Marth mulled over the other player's words and tilted his head to the side. The idea of constantly being inbetween his uncles was one that he could get behind but also recoil at the thought of. It wasn't that he didn't love them. He adored them. Both of them. But it was just the simple fact that they seemed to work on a different level that he just couldn't understand right now or wasn't going to anytime soon. " Well, we're not exactly a team." Though, they're more of a united pair." They tend to do their own thing and I don't want to intrude so I show up sometimes but not often." But if he recalled, his uncle had a tendency to show up even without his knowledge. The idea of the other man playing this game was unsettling but also refreshing. At least he knew that he was alright and not lying in a ditch somewhere. " They actually work well together, when they're not trying to kill one another." Sometimes.Farms' words caused him to turn around slightly only to glance down again as he noticed something glinting. But he decided to press on the matter, keeping his tone light and curious. " New friends," he said. " Like you?" Seizing the trinket from behind a small rock, he held it up and smiled as it glistened with water on the surface. " And this?" Farmsalot[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Not exactly a team? That was a rather sad notion. He would have thought that having multiple people from reality, especially family members, would make for the ideal team. Perhaps they simply weren't on the best of terms. That would explain quite a bit, as depressing as that thought may be. At least they would have plenty of time to work out their differences here.
"I doubt they would mind if you were to 'intrude' on them. As long as they have plenty of time to themselves I bet they would appreciate being able to spend time with you." Not to mention it would keep them from worrying. If he had a nephew in game he would be checking up on him constantly to make sure that everything was alright. Fortunately for everyone who would be involved that wasn't the case. "It's good that they work so well together, though. A close companion is one of the most valuable assets a person can have here."
He stopped his search for a moment, looking up at Marth with a smile. Like him, huh? It was nice to hear, even if they had just barely met. In this short time he could already tell he would enjoy the young man's company, even if he did spend his whole time worrying for his safety. "Like me, and the many others I'm sure you'll make here." A pleasant young man like himself would surely have very little trouble making new friends here. It even seemed like he already had a good head start.
Just as he was about to turn his attention back to the search Marth held up the locket. Muddy hands clapped together as he stood up straight, a satisfied smile coming across his face. "In a sense, that too. Well done Marth." Farms flicked the mud off of his hands, turning his gaze toward the shore. "That wasn't too hard. Should we head back?" Personally he would have liked to stay longer. Unfortunately there wasn't much left to gain here.
