Gran sat crouched outside the city gate, quest beacon hovering over her head. She had been watching players for the better part of an hour. Most of them walked right by her. Some of them had the audacity to laugh at her. She smiled at the thought that one day she would be able to combat these buffoons without trouble. She'd been examining how the fights worked. She'd seen player after player fighting pigs. Some had died. She hated the idea that she couldn't help any of these kids yet. She hadn't even tried the combat yet. No use in getting herself killed for curiosity when there were other idiots to do that for her. By this point, though, combat would be no big deal.
With a sigh, she sat completely on the ground and looked up at the beacon that was above her. She wondered if it was broken, or if her age was just that big a deal. She pulled out her sword and stuck it in the dirt, positioning herself to lean against it. If she was going to wait here, there least she could do is relax. She leaned her head against the pommel of the sword and frowned. It wasn't very comfortable. She didn't mind the discomfort itself, but it brought back horrible memories. She slipped into a light nap, as she had been trained to do, ready to wake and fight at the slightest sound. Her frown deepened as she had visions of explosions and gun shots.
She opened her eyes with a sigh. Maybe a nap wasn't going to be a good idea. She considered the idea of just walking over and fighting the pigs when she saw a stranger that wasn't just ignoring or making fun of her. She gave this stranger her warmest smile and spoke in a light-hearted voice, "Hello, dear. Care to help an old lady out?" MARTH

Marth had been wandering alongside the town borders for some time. He wasn't looking for anything in particular but couldn't help but want to investigate a rumor that he heard. Apparently, there was an NPC that showed up to the eastern gate which was requesting to go on a mission with anyone who dared to take it on. Some players thought it was a trap or a joke set up by Kayaba. Surely there couldn't be any players over the age of forty or so playing the game. However, Marth wasn't going to count anyone out if he could help it and wanted to see if it was true. An NPC should count as a second party member and he'd be able to take the quest without worrying about someone else's life. Although, as he approached the "NPC", it turned out to be an actual lady. A very old lady possibly close enough to his grandmother's age. She looked up at him and spoke to him kindly causing him to jump to attention. A warm smile formed on his lips and he bowed his head to her slightly, coming closer. " Yes ma'am, I'd be delighted." It was a habit to be respectful to his elders. His mother wouldn't take any kind of backtalk so why'd he do it to an old lady? He extended his hand to her to help her up and accepted the party invite, the quest requirements showing up in his HUD. " My name is Marth, but I'm Togashi Shingen in the real world, it's a pleasure to meet you." granxgran[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Gran got a wry little smile on her face. She couldn't help it. She slowly got up, taking the kid's hand in one of her own, using her sword as a crutch in the other. It almost looked like she was actually feeble. She gave the kid a wink and pulled the sword out of the ground, flourishing it around effortlessly before smoothly sheathing it. She raised her eyebrow at Marth and shook her head in an almost condescending manner, "I appreciate the sentiment more than most, but please don't call me ma'am. Also, just Marth is fine. We're in a game kid. Or, have people been telling each other their real names? Either I forget, or no one's talked to me."
She chortled a bit at the last part. It was endearing to hear a kid like this call her ma'am, though. She didn't mind it because of her age, but rather her history in the military. She gave the kid a coy smile, "Don't sweat it, though, short stuff. My name is Yuhara, Suko. But, for my sanity, just call me Gran."
She completely ignored the fact that she called him short stuff as she looked up at him. She slapped him lightly on the shoulder and started walking off down the road towards the pigs. She hummed an old military tune, her favourite, in fact. She ignored the fact that the words that were supposed to go along with it explained the view point of a soldier who's entire squadron had been slaughtered. MARTH

Marth wasn't exactly caught up on the lingo of the elderly but he was almost certain that she was the coolest grandma that he's ever known. And his own grandma was plenty of cool herself. Listening to the older woman speak with attentiveness, he felt the slight rigidness in his posture slacken as she slapped him lightly on the shoulder. An eager smile formed on his lips and he hurried after her only to wak by her side. A thousand questions richochet off Marth's head but he felt like asking her any of them was going to put him on the business end of her sword. And he wasn't very eager to greet it. " So have you fought anything yet?" He crossed his arms behind his head and gave the pigs a wary glance. The last time he fought them was a little irritating but he wasn't going to let it get him down. Paxilon was feeling a lot better from what he heard after their first run of the mission. " I know you probably don't need it but I can show you a little of what I can do." His eyes lit up at the idea of fighting something and for a second, he felt as though he was right back home. Unsheathing his sword, he charged a sword art and gave her another smile. Swinging his sword down in an arc over an unsuspecting pig, it squealed and recoiled. Breathing harshly through his nose, he stabbed his sword through it and it shattered into a thousand crystalline pieces. " And that's one." granxgran[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Gran kept humming her song and shook her head to the kid asking her if she'd fought anything yet, "I've not done combat alone, no. It'd be silly to rush in by myself with a feeble old body like mine, kid."
She let out a dry giggle and was about to point to a pig when Marth continued talking. She smiled warmly at the kid and nodded along with him. He was right, she probably didn't even need help, but she rather enjoyed the company. She waved her hand at the pig when he offered to show what he could do. She watched him dart off and observed him like she'd observed everyone else. She nodded casually as the pig shattered. She pondered on whether or not she wanted to kill something or not and raised an eyebrow at the kid, "Alright then, short stuff."
She chortled again at her joke. He was taller than her. She cocked her head at Marth slightly and smiled wryly, unsheathing her sword, "Simple as that, is it?"
With a laugh, she cocked her eyebrows at Marth before dashing to the nearest pig, faster than a grandmother had business moving. She enjoyed the freedom of this game far too much. Having been refined to a wheelchair for most of her life had made her feel useless. And now here she was, body feeling as fit as it had been when she was in the military. She smiled at the pig as if it were her husband. The pig squealed at her and she laughed, bringing the sword upwards across its face, back down on top of its head. She jumped back and a bit to the side while charging a sword art, launching it flawlessly to destroy the pixels on the side of the pig.
"About like that, right, kid?" she giggled a bit and readied herself for the pig to make a counter attack. Her blood was pumping like it hadn't pumped in decades. She was going to enjoy herself in this game, if nothing else. MARTH

The thrill of combat never seemed to grow old. He had grown accustomed to using his sword as an extension of his body. An extra appendage that he never knew that he needed and loved having regardless of it all. Though, as he bounded back onto his feet and she surged forward, Marth knew that he had more to learn. Watching her was a bit of an astonishing moment and he would gladly disprove any idea that elderly people didn’t know how to move. It was as though she didn’t have any limitations and every movement was without any extra steps. As she spoke to him he snapped back to reality and nodded his head approvingly. “ Exactly ma’am,” he halted. “ I mean Gran.” He charged another sword art and he struck a pig closest to them. The beast squealed in fear only to fall silent after it was struck once more, shattering into crystalline pieces. “ You’re amazing, were you watching other players for awhile?” She had to have some kind of combat experience in the real world. He wasn’t exactly sure what but it had to be something that was amazing. He’d have to ask her all about it. After this though. The death toll was up to two and they would finish in record time if nothing else got in the way. granxgran[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Gran giggled for only a moment, and then she was back in action, sword art launching against the pig's back. She smiled that warm smile a parent gives a kid after they've done something cute. She spun the sword in her grip and looked up at the quest counter. They only needed to kill two more pigs. She focused her attention to Marth and gave the kid a little shrug, "I watched people fight for a few hours, yeah. I decided to watch them while waiting on someone to help me."
The fact that most of the people she had watched fight hadn't even offered to help her was a bit of a sour note for her, but she was fine with it. Apparently, most kids didn't understand that age meant more than just more time on the planet. She smiled a toothy grin at Marth. This kid knew to respect his elders, though, and for that, she would show him the powers of her wrinkles. She laughed a bit at the thought of her wrinkles fighting her battles for her.
"I'm not too amazing, though," she held her rusty sword in front of her, the way old knights use to stand at attention. It was a way she'd been trained to stand. Left arm stiff behind back. Feet shoulder width apart, facing forward. Sword pointing up in front of your face. Her face took a very serious look for a moment, as if she were a soldier once more. If anyone with old military knowledge were watching her, they'd peg her for a special ops agent. She broke her serious face with a smile and loosened her grip on the sword, letting it swing down in an arc, spinning it before pointing at a distant pig, "The sword does most of the work, really. As old as it is."
She chortled a bit at her last remark. The blade was indeed old and rusty, but it could cut down the mightiest beast if held in the hands of a master. She smiled and raised her sword, ready to strike a pig that had started charging at her, "Let's get this over with, then, shall we?" MARTH

The counter was up to three so far and he could take out a pig by himself in two hits if need be. Marth glanced between the pig charging towards hers and the others peacefully grazing nearby. He didn't want to steal her shine. Though, with the current happenings, he was sure that it was nearly impossible. She was amazing. A natural born figher from the looks of it and the gestures that she made reminded him of soldiers that he'd seen in books or on telivision. Either she was a die-hard fan of action movies or a very very great soldier. He was betting on either one if he was going to be completely honest. Nonetheless, he nodded his head at her request and turned to hack and slash at another pig that was grazing nearby. He curved his blade upwards in an uppercut leaving behind a shimmering red line and a body that burst into shards. With that, he sheathed his sword and turned around to survey her progress. Marth crossed his arms behind his head as he watched attentively. His first time fighting was met with a bit of difficulty which was partly his own fault but watching her seemed to ease it away. It seemed like a real game or at least the closest that he would get. And for a moment, he felt as though he was home. " You got this Gran!" He called out to her. She didn't exactly need his encouragement but that is what made it all the better. granxgran[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Gran's hands remained entirely motionless as the pig rushed towards her. Twenty feet. Ten. Five. She stepped to the side and brought her blade up in one smooth motion, connecting the end of her blade with the pig's face, its momentum cause it to run through, allowing the blade to cut from one end of the boar to the other. She exhaled as soon as the boar was cut clean through, blade shining brightly. She launched the skill, blade arcing horizontally as she pivoted on her feet like an eloquent dancer. The blade sliced through the boar almost parallel with the cut she'd made just a second earlier.
"Are we still in the tutorial?" she called out in jest towards Marth, a beaming smile on her face. She hadn't felt this good since she graduated from the Academy. Her eyes moved over to Marth, who'd taken his enemy out in two hits. She smiled. Reminded her of her grandson trying to teach her how to play games for the first time. She felt a tear well up in her eyes and she just giggled. She could not let this kid go off on his own anymore after this. MARTH

This was singlehandedly the greatest experience of his entire life. Well, that was probably going to change later on down the line but for the moment it was. He watched in awe as she took on the pig with nothing but a rusted sword. Her equipment reminded him of his own not too long ago and the condition of her armor mirrored his own. But she fought as though none of that even mattered. And she was having fun doing it. When she addressed him, he smiled in return and shook his head. " No ma'am," he said. " You're in the game now." Though he was happy that she was enjoying herself so much, he didn't let him on his vigilance. Watching her attentively to make sure that nothing went awry. If he had to take out his sword and launch into the fight then he would. But she could do this. He believed that she could do this. " This is awesome." Marth grinned and cheered her on again. The pig was already close to death, just a bit more and it would be dead. granxgran[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]

Sword cut through the pig easily, and she started whistling her tune again. Sword gleamed in tandem with her whistle and she whistled the ballad of song louder as the sword whisked through the air, shattering the pig's existence in an instant. For some reason, she found herself grateful that the body disappeared. She stood there for a moment, legs spread perfectly in a battle stance. She snapped her head back and forth quickly, gauging the situation and looking to make sure no more targets were converging on her. Upon seeing that there were none, she smiled and switched to a much more casual stance. She let out the breath she'd been holding in to steady herself and flourished her blade around her in a very precise, choreographed pattern, sliding the sword into its sheath smoothly.
"Alright, bucko," Gran walked back towards Marth with a bounce in her step, "Now we turn in the quest, right? Rewards are nice for doing good things."
She felt renewed. Her body was free. It made her nostalgic for the old days of sparring with her squad mates. She wished she could use a sword as long as the one she'd used back then. Not just because she really enjoyed the way people looked at her wielding such an unwieldy weapon, but because the reach was helpful. If that pig had had tusks, it easily could've pricked her because of how close she had to be with her little rusted stick. MARTH

Marth watched quietly as the pig was shattered without mercy. The boy was awestruck and completely mesmerized by the elderly woman. Soon after she called out to him, he nodded and lowered his arms to hurry to her side. Though a part of him wondered why he was so happy to see her excel even at the smallest things. Marth had a sneaking suspicion that he was just immensely soft on women or at least those that reminded him of the women in his life. She was strong just like his mother and had a very particular sense of humor. It felt nice. As though nothing had changed. Somewhere along the while that they were walking home, he nudged her a little. " You were great, Gran Gran." He smiled up at her. " Glad I got to kill pigs with you." Crossing his arms behind his head, he felt his stomach rumble. He could go for a bit of bacon right now. Something told him that this wasn't the last time that he'd be seeing her either. So it'd be best if they just took a break and let things play out how they would. Weird, I log into another world and make a grandma and a friend. granxgranTHREAD FINISHED[newclass=.pricklebear1]background-color:#fff;height:auto;width:400px;margin: 0 auto;box-shadow: 1px 1px 2px 1px #c0c0c0;border: 10px solid #f9f9f9;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;padding:24px;text-align:justify;[/newclass]
