Marth sent out a message to Paxilon and waited for the other player on the First Floor Wildlands. No matter how many times he’d seen the wildlands, it still surprised him to see them again. The detail put into the animals and the forest. The way that the sunlight peaked through the canopy made by the trees’ leaves. It left him in a state of awe that he couldn’t easily snap out of. Well, that was until he was attacked by a wayward monster who he mistakingly took for an object rather than something which could kill him. After fighting it off, Marth concluded that he was in dire need of armor. He didn’t want to badger anyone into making armor for him but he wasn’t exactly sure where to get armor from. From what he heard, crafted armor was a lot better than the armor in the shop depending on which one you wanted. He wasn’t sure what his build was going to be but he was getting a few ideas which were growing as he was able to increase his stats and his overall potential. Sending up the beacon, he laid back and read over the quest details given by the NPC. Pax was walking through the woods, wondering what he should do next. He didn't want to take on any difficult quests by himself, and he wasn't in the mood to bother any of the acquaintances he'd made. He pulled his sword out its sheath and admired it again, twirling it a bit in his hand. It did a lot more damage than that beginner one, and it felt good. He smiled at the blade and gave it a couple swings at the air. He breathed in a breath of joy and heard a blip.
Sifting through his menu, Pax opened up his messages and laughed, "Perfect timing, Marth!"
--
He hadn't been that far away, really. He'd turned in the quest for killing those boars and he was in a delightful mood. He nodded as he came in range of the quest beacon, wondering exactly what it was Marth was planning on doing. Out in this area, he somewhat recalled a quest about . . . corn loving? That couldn't be right.
"Hey, kid!" Pax called out as soon as he saw Marth, waving dramatically. He walked closer and got a good look at him. He'd gotten a new sword, Pax was pretty sure, but . . . "How come you don't have any new armor?"
First, he'd had to deal with a kid that didn't understand the necessity of potions, and now Marth didn't have any armor. He was really curious as to how children even played games nowadays. God, was he getting old? MARTH

Marth waited patiently with his arms behind his head and a soft whistle. He wasn't sure what the tune was exactly but he remembered hearing Gran whistle the same. She seemed to know a lot of cool things so he found himsefl repeating the tune over and over again until it was stuck in his head. While he whistled, he heard someone call out to him and looked over just in time to see Paxilon heading his way. Waving back to the other player, he waited until he got closer to put his hands in his pockets though it came after sending a party invite to the veteran player. He seemed to be in much better spirits than he was in their previous encounter to which Marth was thankful. Despite being on one another's friends lists, there were only so many breakdowns that he could handle in a short span of time. Hopefully the next one would come with a bit of warning or he'd know how to navigate the waters better. At the question of his armor, Marth looked down at the comfortable clothing that he had grown accustomed to. From what he had seen he was the only one in the game with the beginner's ware and that was less endearing but more so of a death wish. " I haven't found anyone who can make chainmail armor yet," he said. " Or cloth." There weren't many crafters in the game so far and he wasn't sure why. It would be easy to earn a quick buck off of people that wanted to survive. " But hopefully I'll get enough COL to afford an armor set later." He pulled up the quest and looked it over before looking back to him. " Ready to go?" Pax grinned in a friendly manner as he got the party request. He pressed the accept option and raised an eyebrow at Marth, "I mean, I got this armor from one of those player crafters. It was pretty awesome, actually. Feels pretty great, too. I don't know if he can do chain, though . . . "
"Either way," he perked up a bit and nodded at the kid, "We can get you some more col by doing these silly first floor quests. Oh, I got a new sword, too!"
Pax tilted his head to the side and stretched his arms out before pulling the blade from its sheath. He beamed a smile at it and made a few random slashing motions at the air. He was very proud of this blade. He tilted it up so that Marth could see it. Solid, sharp, and bloodthirsty. That was how Pax saw his sword, and he loved it. He twisted it in his grip and slid it back into its sheath. He motioned for Marth to lead the way, and followed close behind. MARTH

" Nice sword," he said. Opening up his menu and pulling out an iron shield, he slid his arm into the straps and held it up for Paxilon to see. " You inspired me to take up the Round Shield Proficiency," he piped up. " I had this made by one of those best weapon crafters so far." He slid his sword from its sheath and walked alongside Paxilon. Throughout his entire showing of his blade, Marth couldn't help but wonder if he noticed the expression that he was making. Paxilon's eyes lit up and the smile on his face was one that Marth had seen before. However, it was more controlled this time and happiness was in his eyes rather than slowly dawning realization at a seemingly hopeless situation. The teen didn't want to see him spiral into that kind of hole any longer and instead of commenting, turned his eyes away. " This mission should be easy, we're just hunting down seven little nepents." With a little hum and a thought crossing his mind, Marth moved to nudge Paxilon's side. " Wanna make a game out of this?" The teen grinned. " Whoever kills the most nepents first wins and the loser has to pay the winner twenty COL." Pax smiled at Marth and nodded fervently, "It is a very nice sword."
Pax gave the sword a twirl in his hand and tilted his head at Marth with a proud, beaming look, "I inspired you to do something, huh? Well, at least it was to take up shields and not go crazy. Did you get it made by that little guy with the different color eyes and no appreciation for good humor? If so, same kid made my sword."
Even though he joked about the time he'd snapped, he worried the kid was going to hold it against him. As Pax thought about it, he wondered why Marth had actually even sent him the message. Did he really have that much faith in him after a display as embarrassing as Pax had given? Pax mentally swept away the thought and just nodded along with Marth, a coy little grin growing on his face.
"Those little plant dudes, right?" Pax hummed a tuneless melody for a moment, stroking his chin, and then he laughed, "Who am I kidding? I couldn't say no to a challenge. I mean, that's what I would say if the bet were higher. Say . . . 40 col?
Pax grinned and held out his hand to shake. You always shook on a challenge. MARTH

Marth crossed his arms over his chest though being careful as to not himself with the shield on his arm. He grinned and tilted his head to the side with an inquisitive expression. " Are you sure I'm not crazy?" He asked. " I thought we already established that before." He felt that Paxilon was trying to make light of the previous situation. And in a way, he had already bypassed his initial discomfort with the man's outburst. They were all adjusting and getting used to the game. People were bound to have different perceptions on the situation and he wasn't going to hold it against him for getting his anger out this way. At least it got them a reward in the end and a little closer to being stronger. " Ruler is alright, you just gotta give him a chance and probably hold off on the puns." The craftsman was one of the few people that Marth knew inside of the game and could gauge his response to certain things. There was no way that he was going to hold his moods against him. A sneaking suspicion or at least a hunch but he felt there was more to Ruler than he could see at first glance. As Paxilon raised the stakes of the wager and held out his hand to seal the deal, Marth mulled it over. It would be his entire quest reward but no need to be stingy. Clasping hands with Pax, he grinned. " You're on." And with a firm shake, the deal was sealed. "Crazy or not," Pax blew air from his nose, sticking the very tip of his sword lightly into the ground, "you've got a decent head on your shoulders, and a strong sword arm at that."
He popped the vertebrae in his neck and shook his shield onto his arm, getting prepared for combat. He gave it a little shake and nodded at Marth, "Ruler's not a bad kid, I'll admit. Secretly, I started making jokes just to get on his nerves, but don't let him know, alright?"
He gave Marth a wink and started walking off in the direction of where he remembered the little plants had been in the beta. He tried his best to remember the mechanics those little eggplants had. He recalled a few sweeping attacks and whip like maneuvers with those vines. The vines themselves didn't hurt too much. It was those teeth that really did the damage. Pax laughed a bit as he shook hands with Marth, sealing the bet that they had made. For better or for worse, he always enjoyed doing things like this. Betting someone that he could do better at something raised the stakes a bit for basic quests. Not that the stakes really needed raising anymore.
"You know, this is gonna be kind of difficult to win for me," Pax gestured at his own armor and then pointed at Marth, "I'm gonna have to tank all of the hits for you, you know that? It's like a handicap." MARTH

Marth prepared the shield on his arm and twirled his sword around in his grasp. This was going to be one of the best challenges that he'd ever have in the game. Or at least he could hope that it would be. He wasn't exactly sure how he was going to win considering that Paxilon was right. He couldn't take too many hits even with his CON stat being so high. If he remembered the information from the bestiary correctly, the nepent's HP was on par with his own. But he had the advantage when it came to DEX. So he should be alright, he thought. Only one way to find out." Don't tell me you're scared," he said. " The great Paxilon can do anything." He walked alongside the other player though stopping as he heard the sifting of grass. His lips drew into a thin line and eyes scanned the area around them. A sharp whistle through the air followed and Marth sucked in a breath as he darted to the side. Turning on his heel and slicing through the tendril which was withdrawing after missing it's mark, the nepent let out a shriek. It darted out to grab him once again only to be impeded by his shield. He took in a sharp breath of air and charged a sword art. Charging against it, he sliced through the nepent's body in an arc taking down at least half its HP. " I'll do my best to keep up, y'know?" He grinned though keeping his eyes on the prey. "Scared?" Pax gave Marth a little wink, which was probably lost through the thin visor on his helmet, "Oh no, friend, I'm exhilarated!"
He started chuckling as they began walking. Suddenly, Marth stopped, so Pax did too. It took Pax only a moment to realise, right before there was a sharp crack where Marth had just been standing. Pax watched for a moment as Marth skillfully dodged an attack. Pax really hadn't been ready for combat right off the bat, but he jumped into a fighting stance anyway. Marth landing a nice blow, and Pax bolted past him when he stopped for a moment. It was almost as if Marth had called for a switch, but Pax hadn't waited for him to call it.
He put one foot in front of the other, bring his sword to bare behind him, letting it charge up with its bloodthirsty light. With a grunt, he let loose the attack, sword slashing through the plant's body horizontally. He smiled as the nepent exploded into particles, turning to look at Marth with a laugh, "I think I stole your kill, friend."
In that moment, another two nepents had risen up near him. They seemed a little angry at the fact that he'd killed their friend. A vine slapped against Pax's helmet with a sharp crack, making him falter a bit. Luckily, he had his shield up and ready for the next attack, even if it was just out reaction from the first. The second nepent's vine slapped against his shield with a wooden thud, and Pax grimaced. He hadn't taken much damage at all, but man that sound really hurt his ears. MARTH
