Ever since the beta had passed and the official game had launched, there was one particular quest that Sonic had not dared touch in this new run through. It was going to be rough. It was going to be dangerous. For a long while, no one old or new had dared to touch the one quest that was actually more difficult than a trip to the labyrinth at this level.[break][break]
Until now. Armed with the foreknowledge of what had happened in the beta when he had taken this with another player as well as estimations of the vitality increase the mobs have been given, Sonic had recruited a few players for this excursion, sending them messages over PM to come meet him here by the blonde NPC who he knew gave the quest.[break][break]
This time, Sonic was decked in his full gear, including his new accessory and his new shield. He was as ready as he could be to meet those beasts, and he hoped that his invited party members would be the same. It’d be a bonus if they could do it without shredding the pelts too, though that would mean that Sonic himself was stuck with the blunt end of his spear to prevent unnecessary tearing.[break][break]
Well, at least Saint’s mace was a blunt weapon. Not sure if Ruler’s blade was just as blunt or if he could even control his body enough to blunt the blows of the automatic movements the system made for sword arts, but there was only one way to find out.[break][break]
Now all he had to do was wait. It was almost time.[break][break]

There was something exciting to the reason Ruler was traversing
the grasslands that day. He had passed through often, on trips to Tolbana, or just to explore the lay of the land.
He'd fought his first boar, ran from the first wolf and had run frenetically when it was almost dark and he would have to camp out in a dangerous area.
But Ruler had come a long way from then. He was no longer the lad with a rusty sword and beginner's gear. From tip to toe he was decked out in armour now, the iron glinting in the sunlight.
The only part left uncovered was his head. Ruler didn't like to put on the helmet unless absolutely necessary, and the trek towards the quest NPC hardly qualified as 'absolutely necessary.'
Altogether, his new, shiny gear (which Ruler hoped evoked the image of a knight) allowed him to drop a boar in nearly a single hit. Little Nepenthes took just two. But there was one foe he hadn't tried to fight yet.
The level 6 dire wolves. Twice his own level, fearsome, and reputedly the cause of a few deaths already.
Too many deaths.
Ruler saw Sonic off in the distance, waving. He did not call out until he was close by, knowing a loud shout would attract all sorts of monsters.
"Sonic! Have you been waiting long? Um, I hope not," the boy said, slowing his jog and coming to a stop by Sonic. "I'll be under your care again for this quest."
He bowed, then stood straight and looked around.
"So... there's someone else coming, right?" He was curious who it was and, more curiously, what weapon they'd use. Would it be a Ruler weapon? |

olves eh? Saint had experience with wolves! [break][break] Well, one wolf. Still, she and Paxilon had killed that wolf with the help of Comic and some tables. That had been before her gear upgrade, so now a wolf didn't seem too daunting. There was a quest in game the required killing five, not one but five, dire wolfs. It was a rather impressively difficult quest. It was just how Saint liked her quests. [break][break] So when she heard a certain blue haired not a hedgehog Sonic was going to be taking it on, Saint had to come along. This was going to be either really good or really bad. After a bit, the first person finally arrived and Sonic wasn’t surprised to see that it was Ruler. The kid had a knack to be being early or at least on-time to things, but he’d only ever experienced a handful of cases so it could be a fluke or something. Who knows?
He was surprised when Ruler did bow to him after asking if he’d been waiting long and mentioning that the kid would be under his care again. For a moment, it was like he was back at the dojo with one of his students bowing to him as a greeting and a sudden pang of nostalgia hit him right in the heart.[break][break]
He chuckled and pushed the feeling at the back of his mind. Now was not the time to feel nostalgic and miss his students. That was what drinking sessions and alone time were for. Not during questing, especially dangerous questing.[break][break]
”Don’t worry, you’re about right on time, actually.” He admitted with a small grin. ”As for our quest companion, she’s going to be here-”[break][break]
He paused when a certain female bundle of energy suddenly arrived and greeted them both, causing him to roll his eyes and snort. ”...right about now. Heya yourself, you devilish Saint. Feelin’ good today?” He grinned and then gestured to the blonde NPC as he officially sent them party invites.[break][break]
”I see you both know each other, so once you’re done with the reacquainting then I’ll trigger the dialogue. I already gave you the low-down on this quest, so I won’t explain it again.” Sonic remarked with a dry smirk.[break][break]

Second favourite weapon smith. The four words hammered in like a mace, even when Ruler knew it meant absolutely nothing. He glanced at her weapon: the Kurdalegon. His make.
It wasn't personal. Tiecoon may have been her favourite, but the weapons they made clearly were not. Ruler figured he'd have to scope out this Tiecoon and figure out why the newcomer preferred her.
M, maybe I'm just not nice enough.
His thoughts were interrupted by Sonic, and Ruler snapped to attention. He accepted the party invite, and thought about the quest. Slaying dire wolves. The greatest challenge of all.
He knew both Sonic and Saint had great weapons, though. Both the Zenith and Kurdalegon were works he could proudly call 'some of his greatest,' and if Saint was as good or better than Sonic at the game, Ruler figured he was in a party with the best of the best.
"Um, so... this is just a curiosity, but... these wolves are the strongest monsters in the field, right? That means if we can handle these, we could even handle the labyrinth, right?"
He hoped at least the answer was 'yes.' The thought of labyrinth monsters being so much stronger than these made him miserable.

Always feeling good? With someone as energetic and proactive as Saint, Sonic could believe a claim like that. She didn’t have any reservations about fighting the wolves right now and from the looks of things she was probably treating this like the game it was and not the life-or-death struggle that it became. It was a refreshing attitude, if a bit alarming. Still, better someone happy and peppy rather than another Debbie Downer.[break][break]
As for the labyrinth though, Sonic let Saint answer it since it’s accurate enough as it was. The only thing he’d think to even correct where the toughness of the kobolds relative to the wolves, but that wasn’t important when numbers made up for the power difference between the two creatures. Instead, he only nodded in agreement as he let these two keep their assumptions on their own, no need to reveal his own status as a beta tester about that stuff if he didn’t need to, after all. That is, if they hadn’t figured it out already, heh.[break][break]
After Saint spoke, he shrugged and grinned a bit. ”Whether or not it’s a measure of how ready we are in getting to deal with the labyrinth, at least we’ll get bragging rights in being able to deal with five dire wolves on the first floor, right?.” He quipped wryly before turning to the quest NPC. ”Head’s up, going to trigger the quest now. It’s time to have a chat with another AI. Sort of.” [break][break]

Ruler listened intently to Saint. He'd met many people in Aincrad. Nearly twice as many as on the other side. Some were old, some were young. Some talked a lot, others not so much. None of them had ever spoken about the labyrinth.
At least, not about the inside of it. There'd been some dreamers who'd declared they would clear the labyrinth, and Ruler was lying if he said he hadn't one day wanted to do just that: plunge in and see what happens.
But information about the inside of the labyrinth? That was rare. He stared at Saint with a mix of awe and admiration.
Sonic ruined the moment.
"Ah, um, yeah." The man was certainly casual about it. Or had he seen the dungeon already?
"Though... um, Saint, right? Do you... Um, not that. Have you been inside the labyrinth before?" In the background, he heard the NPC say something about dire wolves. "What's it like? What's 'the monsters swarm' mean? An entire day to scope it out?" He shuddered at the thought of spending a night anywhere that wasn't in a town.
