Gran was sitting in one of the lower branches of one of the trees outside Tolbana's entrance. One of the NPC sisters that gave out the Nepent killing quests was near the foot of the tree itself, looking around for adventurers to bother. Gran liked this NPC more than most of the bland ones that had been programmed into the game. She smiled and peeked through the foliage to spy on any other players who happened to be walking by. It had been a little while since she'd sent the message to Farms, and she figured he would be close by now. She caught sight of a figure in the distance and squinted her eyes. Was that him?
She looked around her perch in the tree and wondered if Farms would be able to see her through the foliage. She smiled at the thought of being able to jump down and scare him. Maybe she shouldn't, though. This was a pvp enable zone, after all. She snickered to herself and turned back to watch the figure get closer. It looked like him, anyway. she sat up straight and let her legs dangle off the branch, wiggling to and fro. She hadn't done either of these quests to retrieve items from the Nepents yet. She was kind of excited. Farmsalot Quest

Farms walked at a brisk pace down the road, not wanting to keep Gran waiting any longer than he had to. He would have ran, but he knew they were going to have quite a few battles in front of them before too much longer. It would be foolish to exhaust himself unnecessarily. His new five prong spear rested on his shoulder while his equally new cape hung down from underneath his pauldrons. He had to admit, wearing a cape felt pretty cool. Almost embarrassingly so.
As he drew near to the NPC it came to his attention that Gran was nowhere to be seen. He had assumed that she would be nearby already. Though maybe she had other matters to take care of before they set out. It didn't matter too much, as Farms had no gripes with waiting on her. It wasn't until he was only a few yards from the NPC that he heard a rustling from a nearby tree, like a branch started to sway slightly. Still on edge from his trap through the wildlands it quickly caught his attention. Head jerked to look at the source of the sound, squinting eyes barely managing to make out what appeared to be a woman's dangling legs. That wasn't Gran up there was it?
His approach slowed, eyes locked in to the tree as he approached the NPC to accept the quest. He paid little mind to her words as she spoke, instead keeping his focus on the figure obscured by the leaves. "Gran? Is that you up there?" Maybe he was making assumptions based on her age again, but he had a hard time imagining her playing around in the trees.

Gran giggled like a little school girl and opened up her menu. She slid off of the branch as she rummaged through the social section. The party request was sent out in tandem with her feet landing on the ground. She closed the menu and looked up at Farms with a sly grin, "Why no, dearie. I think that was some kind of monkey up there. Been plaguing this town for months. I would catch it if I weren't so darned old."
She chortled along and walked over to the NPC, who was already halfway through her dialogue. Gran nodded quickly and accepted the quest, turning to face Farms while she pulled her mace out. She used it as a cane and stuck the end in the dirt, "Now, I think today we'll head straight into the action! It's been dreadfully boring all day today, and I need some excitement before I wither away."
She began walking off towards the field she'd seen a few other players fighting the nepents in. She liked to get a feel for the fighting before she would be doing it. She hummed for a moment, but then stopped and shot a question to Farms, "We'll be fighting large Nepents this time. They're a bit different. Much longer vines and a bit more health, but their stats don't seem to be any higher other than that, ironically enough."
Gran was mostly talking to fill the silence, but felt she should fill Farms in, just in case. She continued, "The real challenge to the big ones, though, is that they don't seem to like being alone. We won't just be fighting one large nepent at a time. I've seen some encounters of two large ones and three little ones all at once. Of course, the more difficult encounters only seem to happen to players who are fully prepared to face the challenge."
"Then again," she twirled her cane out by her side, coy grin creeping on to her face, "We're probably more prepared than the other players who I've seen fighting. More prepared by a long shot, actually." Farmsalot

It was a relief to see Gran climbing out of the tree. It would have been embarrassing if it were anyone else. Fortunately his guess was right, a smile coming to his face as he accepted the party invitation. Shoulders shook slightly as he let out a restrained chuckle, shaking his head at the older woman's quip. "Too fast for you? I find that hard to believe. Fortunately I don't think you'll have the same problem with the plants." They may have had considerable reach, but at least nepants were stationary targets.
For some reason Farms had trouble imagining Gran being too bored. She seemed to enjoy combat, and there was no shortage of monsters to fight. Maybe she was actually being cautious and holding off on fighting more dangerous creatures until she had a party. Choosing to operate on that assumption, Farms suddenly found himself feeling honored by her invitation. It felt good to have someone like her turn to him when she needed someone to watch her back. "Lets see if this quest can help alleviate that boredom of yours, then."
He followed close behind her as she walked, five pronged spear resting on his shoulder as they walked. Large nepants, huh? It was hard to imagine a living plant any bigger than what they encountered before. Then again he had trouble imagining a living plant at all until he saw one in person. Though the size seemed to be less of an issue when compared to their numbers. A big plant wasn't much different from a small one, but put two or three of them together and they had quite the battle on their hands. "I see. I've never fought a group of monsters at the same time before." Lips pressed into a flat line as he took in a deep breath. Fortunately he had just recently gotten something that was perfect for these situations.
Gran's optimism brought a smile to his face, causing him to nod in agreement. "I'm glad to hear you have as much faith in me as I have in you." Sure, being better equipped meant the game was going to throw more dangerous obstacles their way. That was just the nature of things as far as he could tell. So long as they both kept their wits about them they should come out just fine. "Remember, if things get hairy there's no shame in falling back. I won't tell anyone if you don't." A rare smirk came across his face as he spoke, looking rather amused by himself. It wasn't very often that he found himself teasing others, but he was sure Gran could take it as well as she dished it out.

Gran chuckled a bit at Farms as they walked. She wondered to herself if he noticed how he fell in line a little behind her. She wondered more if she had actually stepped in front. It didn't matter much either way, she supposed. With a shrug, she responded, "Well, you'd be surprised. Plants can grow around you pretty quickly, you know. Like that kudzu in the states. Some fool brought a couple plants of it over and suddenly, bam! It was all over the place. Out of control."
Gran continued on, humming an old war melody. She listened to Farms ramble on and then she stopped, "You've never fought a group of monsters before? Well, don't worry yourself too much. If you need to, imagine it's just one big monster with multiple limbs! Actually, that might be worse, scratch that. You'll be fine!"
With a wink, Gran continued down the path to the little open field where Nepents would start spawning on them. The first encounter would be simple and easy, but it was like the game's way of getting a read for how well a player could fight. Almost on cue, a couple mounds of dirt were rising up in front of her. She guessed they were starting the real fight then. She shot Farms a glance and smirked, "Don't worry, I'll just tell everyone I had to drag you away after you fainted."
She turned back to the two large plants that were rising up to great them. They were almost ten feet tall each, much wider than the little nepents from before. Gran would have been scared if they weren't such pushovers. Vines came surging from the earth as the large nepents made there presence known, shrieking in a pitch that was just a couple octaves deeper than the little nepents. Still incessant and annoying.

Farms didn't quite buy into the whole kudzu argument. There was a big difference between growing and spreading quickly and actively moving around quickly. So long as the base was rooted all one had to do was make sure not to get caught up by the vines. In theory it seemed like it would be an easy fight, but he knew that was never the case around here. Getting too comfortable or confident could easily lead to failure if he wasn't careful.
Her efforts to comfort him were met with a weak smile, the image of an even bigger nepant with even more vines seeming much harder to cope with. It seems like at a certain point it would be more like chopping down a tree than pulling weeds. "I think I'll stick to dealing with the multiple monsters for now. At least that way we can focus on them one at a time and hopefully take less hits overall." Every enemy they defeated would be an easier fight moving ahead. He may not have known much about battle tactics, but that seemed like a good strategy as far as he could tell. If Gran had any better ideas he would be more than willing to jump on board with those. She seemed like more of a strategist than himself.
His muscles tightened as the ground began to shift under his feet, tightening his grip on his spear and holding it at the ready. Eyes grew wide in awe as he looked at the massive plants before him. Never would he have expected them to be so tall, especially not two of them together. Still, he had prepared himself for this battle. A moment of hesitation could lead to failure, which was never an option around here.
Farms advanced toward the first plant, keeping a bit of distance between himself and the base of the plant. He knew that if he charged to attack the base of one of them he would quickly find himself surrounded in vines from both enemies. It was better to keep out of range and attack the vines, which would hopefully deal the same amount of damage. As he moved forward at a quickened pace opened his mouth wide and let out a shout, moving to bash his gauntlet into his iron breastplate. "I am your enemy! Fight me!" His voice was far more aggressive than anyone who knew him would expect from him.
Farms used Rank D luring to attract Large Nepant A & Large Nepant B
After his shout he would lunge forward at one of the extending vines with all of his might.
Farms attacked Large Nepant A for 60 damage
After his attack he would return to his defensive stance while keeping an eye out for Gran. He needed to be sure she didn't get herself surrounded by these things.

Gran nodded to herself as Farmsalot made the first move. He seemed to use an ability that she was pretty sure was basically just a taunt. Both enemies immediately turned to focus on the well-armored attacker. She skirted to the opposite side of the two as Farms was on, taking a calming breath. She had a feeling if they did too well against these two nepents, that it would only get more difficult for them. No time to worry about that now, though. Taking them out one at a time was usually the best option, she mentally agreed with Farms. But as soon as she saw the damage output he was capable of with his new weapon, she changed strategies on the fly.
Focusing on the one Farms hadn't hit, she yelled in her loud, projected 'commander' voice, "Stab that one twice more, and we'll be good."
As soon as the words left her mouth, she pounced on the sentient eggplant that hadn't been touched, slamming her mace into it with all her might. The plant screeched and whipped around towards her, vines wriggling around to start whipping at her. She charged her sword art and smiled, jumping up as the art launched her mace in a diagonal streak, cracking against the plant's fibrous top. It shrieked and shattered into pieces. She smiled as she landed gracefully on the ground, one nepent flower spawning itself in her inventory. She turned to watch Farms, readying herself just in case something went wrong.

It seemed as if his taunt wasn't even needed at this point. With Gran easily picking off the first plant while his attack caught the attention of the other. Still, it felt kind of good to yell like that. Felt like a nice release. What didn't feel nice was the thick vine that lashed out in retaliation to his strike, the impact causing him to take a step back to brace himself. Fortunately his armor gave him plenty of constitution so it didn't do much aside from shake him up a bit.
Large Nepant A attacked Farmsalot for 30 damage
Farms charged forward with clenched teeth, trusting in Gran's orders to finish the plant off. Once he reached the main body of the massive weed he took an aggressive stance, swinging his spear in a horizontal slash. After that attack connected he immediately followed up by pulling his arms back and thrusting it forward, taking a step forward to make sure his blade pushed through.
Farmsalot used Horizontal slash on Large Nepant A for 70 damage

The plant let out a desperate screech as it reeled back in pain, suddenly bursting into a shower of crystals. He glanced toward the notification on his screen, notifying him that he had acquired a flower as well, meaning they were already a fifth of the way there. It may have sounded like they had a long way to go, but at this rate they would be fine. Farms stood up straight and lifted his visor, taking a deep breath as he turned to look at Gran. With a wide smile he rose a hand and gave her a thumbs up, looking more like a child who wanted mommy to be proud than a warrior who just slayed a beast. He may not have enjoyed combat, but it at least felt good to be of use.

Gran wanted to laugh as Farms followed her order and the plant was obliterated. She watched him give her a thumbs up, and she was reminded of one of her old squad mates. She might've looked sad for a moment, but she was back in the present only an instant later, smiling whole-heartedly again. She laughed and twirled her mace like before, shrugging a bit at Farms, "I get the feeling you'll need a break before I will. After all, you're gonna be the one they hit more."
With that, she started walking again, wondering if the game would register how well they were already doing. It wasn't but a few seconds before she got her response. She whistled as the entire ground seemed to be falling apart. They must have done extremely well, because this was ridiculous. In an instant, they were surrounded by eggplants and vines. Some of them varied slightly in size, but she could tell that there were Little Nepents, too. This was going to take longer than she had planned for. Her face straightened into a serious frown, and she preemptively longed at one of the larger Nepents, quickly smacking it twice with her mace and hopping back, getting ready for the bloodbath that was about to begin.
She would only hope that Farmsalot kept his cool about him for this.

He simply shrugged at her remark, unable to really argue. If he kept doing his job then she would be right, he was the one who would be needing a rest. Then again if they made even a few mistakes Gran could quickly find herself in a tight spot. All this meant was he was going to have to make sure he didn't make any slip ups. As far as he was concerned, her life was in his hands and his in hers.
The sudden swarm of nepants came as a surprise, causing him to clench his teeth and spin on his heels to get a quick count of the creatures. Their vines were everywhere, so it would be impossible to dodge them all. Still, he knew he was fast enough to avoid most of the damage if he simply focused on defending. "FIGHT ME!" He let out another shout, attracting the attention of the three Nepants nearest to him.
Little Nepant 1, Little Nepant 2 and Large Nepant 1 targeted Farmsalot
Fortunately Gran didn't take long in dispatching one of the larger ones, meaning there would only be one left that wasn't attracted by his taunting. He quickly shuffled backward facing the aggroed mobs, doing his best to make sure they were all in view as they prepared their strikes. Fortunately he managed to dodge two of their strikes, one of the vines striking from the side and smacking him upside the head.
Little Nepant 2 attacked Farmsalot for 30 damage
The smack threw him for a bit of a loop, but the pain was dull enough that he had little trouble enduring it. All he had to do was thing of the time his foot got ran over by the tractor back home and suddenly a smack upside the head while wearing an iron helmet didn't seem too bad. "I've got these ones under control, Gran! Don't worry about me." A quick glance at his HP and he knew he could last for a little while longer. Definitely long enough for Gran to clean things up. | I DON'T need THE WHOLE PIE, I JUST WANT MY LITTLE SLICE

This was not quite as much as Gran was actually expecting the game to throw at them. They had obliterated the first two enemies in record time. She watched as Farms drew the attention of the majority of the enemies. She eyes the single mob that was still facing her and almost wanted to stick her tongue out at it. She decided to hit it, instead. As she readied her weapon, the thing screeched at her and vines were flung towards her. One of them planted square on on her chest, knocking the wind from her lungs. She pressed on, through the shooting pain, and charged forward, slamming her mace into the thing's side. And then again. It shattered into pieces and Gran nodded. One more flower down.
"I'm more worried about myself," Gran yelled back at him, readying herself to peel those enemies off of him, "but thanks for caring."

He felt a little guilty after he spoke, realizing that he shouldn't be so focused on himself when Gran is over there in the thick of it without protection. He could make quite a few mistakes without much harm coming to him while she had to be completely focused to avoid death. Rather than dwelling on that thought he simply scolded himself for his thoughtlessness and channeled it into the fight. Not only was he not going to make that mistake again, but he was going to work as hard as she was.
All he had to do was keep the attention of the plants until Gran could swoop in and pick them off. He moved himself into a more advantageous position, allowing him to fully see all three plants and most of their vines. As each one attacked he was able to move quickly enough to avoid all three of their strikes, much to his own surprise. If he didn't know any better he would have been impressed with himself. Still he couldn't expect to dodge these things forever. As soon as Gran takes out one of these last three he was going to charge in and take one of them out. He would probably take a few hits as he made his approach, but compared to the hit Gran's HP bar it would be nothing. | I DON'T need THE WHOLE PIE, I JUST WANT MY LITTLE SLICE

Gran found herself feeling rather calm. This wasn't as much of a challenge as she was hoping for, really. Just some basic gardening, really. She let out a calming breath and looked over at Farms. He was capable, that was definite. She appreciated him coming out here with her. With a nod, she darted towards the remaining plants, raising her mace in the air. This would take no time at all, really.
She swung her mace at the final Large Nepent, grinning as it twisted in pain and shrieked. She brought her mace back as the vines connected to the nepent start churning in response to her attack. With a grunt, she slammed the tip of it into the nepent once more, laughing softly as it shattered into pieces. With a sadistic smile, she turned her gaze to the final two little eggplants. This was turning out to be easier and easier by the minute. Her smile quickly faded, though. She snapped her attention over to Farmsalot as something caught her eye. The ground was shifting behind him.
"More behind you!" she yelled at him, hoping he wouldn't get too tangled up.

The sudden rumbling was worrying, the idea of even more of these plants popping up seeming almost overwhelming. Turning around to see three more large nepants emerging from the ground only made that feeling more real. He took in a deep breath, quickly reviewing the situation in his head before coming to a decision. Charging toward the three new nepants he held his spear at the ready, prepared to slash at the fines. "FIIIIIGHT MEEEEE!" He swung his spear as he let out his dramatic taunt, cutting at the vines of one of the plants as they lashed out at him.

This was bad. Farms was taking way too much damage for them to continue fighting like they were currently. They needed a change of tactics. Gran laid out the battlefield in her mind as she considered what their options were. The large nepents on the other side of Farms seemed like the more important targets at first, but she considered. A fight on two fronts is a losing battle just waiting to happen. That was how Germany lost their war so long ago. Her eyes fell on the two smaller nepents between Farms and herself, and she had an idea.
"FARMS!" she yelled across the enemies to him, raising her mace, "Hit and kill these two! Quickly!"
With that, she hefted her mace and swung it, ignoring all other thoughts in her mind but combat. The metal tip slammed into the nepent on her left, and she used the force of the hit to bounce it off the enemy and swing her mace at the other eggplant. She successfully hit both little nepents, and went to bolt past Farms, hoping he would just stab both of them and be done with it. They couldn't afford to waste any time right now.
